This 496-650 is probably the best oldschool-highpower-streetengine i know.
    1) Old iron block & heads
    2) over 600 hp anywhere over 5k
    3) has vacuum and your granny can drive it...

Back in 1998 I built a 12.5 ls7 454 short block and installed merlin 269 iron oval ports, everyone laughed at me when I removed the iron rec ports.
    12.5 compression
Merlin iron oval ports I ported.
    Ultradyne solid roller. 263 271 660 680 108 lobe sep installed at 103
    Dart oval port
    1050 Dom.
On a stuska dyno it did 726 hp and 640 torque. Hp peak was 6800.
Car went from 10.60 at 128 to 10 flat and 136.
The good old days, I ran that engine for ten years on street and track.

Mark built one of these for me; dyno tested it at his shop when I picked it up in Aug, 2020; just to give you an idea of his consistent builds, my dyno sheet looks like a carbon-copy of this one, only difference was mine at 663hp vs this 667.(I'll have to get my money back :)
I have been to Mark's shop a few times and watched him build these, from the initial greasy used-core disassembly, through the final product; He's an ANIMAL when it comes to perfection.. close enough doesn't cut it; he also has the energy of ten normal guys as a one-man show. HIs paint jobs are almost too nice to hide under the hood! Like most others, I'm amazed at the power he gets from the factory stock "junk parts" we all threw away 40-50 years ago.!! You can't argue with the numbers and the consistency of his builds. Bad news is, my lazy ass still hasn't put it in the car..A '67 442 Olds... but I know it'll be a RELIABLE fun ride.

Only 30 over so its a 489, 781 heads (almost identical to 049), scat crank, 12cc dome pistons = 9.6:1 cr, Straub hyd roller cam 229/241 @ .600/.570, 1.7 roller rockers, air gap intake, Holley 950cfm double pumper. Something I forgot; Mark usually starts his pulls at 4000rpm; notice the torque at 4200 already decreasing, I'm "guessing" it was making more somewhere below 4000; I realize once your into the pedal you're above 4K almost instantly, but I'd like to know what the torque really was.

I have a 496 bbc with a pro flo 4 efi system installed on it and I'm trying to figure out the timing. Right now base timing is 22 and comes in at 1200rpm. Total timing is 36 and comes in at 3500. And my vacuum is at +15. When my total is running on my tablet and I'm cruising it says my timing is at 50, is that too high? And when I'm cruising in first gear and lightly step on the throttle it starts to buck around.. any tips?

Mark, great to see you guys back! It looks like the camera quality has been upgraded too! I'm always impressed with your cleanliness of parts and build at your shop, well done. Hey I've got a question, I live in Indiana so I'm not at altitude and E-85 is everywhere and I want to take advantage of every last drop of compression. If I build a 454 or 496 with a good iron GM head with upgraded valves how much compression could I get away with on E-85 for a street/strip engine, I mean every last bit. And would you use a flat top piston and deck the heads or use a domed piston. I've heard compression ratios from 12-14.5 but I want to ask an actual engine builder. Thanks again and I can't wait for more videos!

    • @VORTECPRO
      @VORTECPRO 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks! I've never run E85 before, so I don't think I'am qualified to answer your question, I do want to try it on my 327 truck, the fuel system would need to be upgraded on my truck.

@Car Guy daddyo Please read up on E-85 there are numerous articles that support people with street cars running 12 to 12.5 cr on E85. I was just wanting to ask Vortec Pro and see what he has done. I guess from his response he hasn't built one to take advantage of E85. Yes if you are looking for an easy out you can 110 octane, but if you do your homework you can run much higher cr than 9.5 on the street.

Hey Mark I have a question about my 496BBC build..
Took my 454 Gen V (5), 4 bolt main in to get a complete 496 Stroker job done. The shop was awesome and did a great job! Worked the block, worked the 781 cylinder heads, internally balanced and blueprinted.
    Bore: 4.310in
    Stroke: 4.250in
    Cylinder Head Volume: 118cc
    Effective Dome Volume: -25.7cc
    Deck Clearance: .025in
    Compressed Gasket Thickness: 0.039in
My last Dyno Pull after messing with 2 different carbs was : Timing 26 INITIAL 40 TOTAL.. DC CARB BLACK WIDOW… 850 .. UNLEADED WITH HVH 1 INCH SPACER.. Jet to 75-83 from 76-85Less TIMING…
    Best we got was : 704.0STPTrq Clb-ft
    And 590.4 STPPwr CHp..
Does these hp and Tq numbers look right?
It’s going into my Jet Boat, so the 704.0 STPTrq Clb-ft was right at 3,500rpms and the 590.4 STPPwr CHp was right at 5,000rpms..

With all the labor that goes into your builds especially in the balancing and cylinder head work, would it not be more cost effective to go Aluminum cylinder heads?

I would definitely put that 265 head on there anyday before the 049's with the entry head cost of $2,300 . You can put that AFR head on a 454cid with a hydraulic flat tappet cam and make 575hp and do nothing but install them , I wonder what Mark sells a set of his 049 heads for ??? I would choose AFR 265cc heads every day of the week !

Since he built it and that is his recommendation that is what I am doing on my new engine. Lots of info and opinions on the web to help you make your choice. The hose cost about 5 bucks at most any auto parts store.
