    I have one of these and it has been great. I painted my garage door in very little time. The prep work took longer than the painting. I chose latex paint and added water to the paint in increments until I liked the test spray I did on a piece of cardboard. Months later, it still looks perfect. Best part - no brush marks!

    Man I lucked out. We had a local Sears Hardware store going out of business. I saw this gun on the shelf for $40 so I grabbed it. Haven't used it yet, but I'm all hyped up now

    Overall, you like you know what you are doing, however, if I can offer advice, always primer coat bare wood. Especially with kitchens and bathrooms where there is high heat and humidity. I use an oil primer, with 2 coats, sanding between each, and then 2 coats of paint. It will extend the length of your cabinets and protect from warping over time. Your cabinets are beautiful by the way, and thank you for the review.

    Got the same gun ,awesome ! I did a thick deck paint and no thinning !! ,it comes with 3 different size tips and I used red and no thinning ,worked great !gonna do bare wood fence, and about 65 yr old wood barn ,oil base prime first then barn red with dark burnt orange trim . you can adjust how heavy it comes out and using the proper size tip just about any paint . Two yr warranty ,just follow cleaning instructions and m using mostly deck paints and barn and fence with oil base primer and latex ext paint over . I will brush and roll primer ,otherwise you need harsh stuff to clean sprayer , but latex in the gun is fast and easy . Just ch the air filter at back of gun and periodically clean out with water and dry ,good product !

    Thank you for suggesting this product. Had to replace some faux shutters on the front of a rental house and was dreading painting them with a brush. So for the price I was willing to try this sprayer. The last (only) spray painter I owned was about 20 years ago and it cost $200 and was a bear to clean, hence it didn't last long. This was incredible on painting, easy to figure out, and only took about 5 minutes to thoroughly clean. I think I am going to start doing a lot more painting.

    Instead of water, try Floetrol. Like water, it improves the flow for spraying and brush-layoff. Unlike water, it doesn't compromise the binding and durability/lifespan. A $7.00 bottle does up to 4 gallons of paint.

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Mark Spotter this paint has Floetrol already in it. It takes 8 hours to dry. Sales rep on the phone said to use water.

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Mark Spotter I think I might try ppg breakthrough for my next cabinet paint job. The dry time on the paint I used was not practical at all. It did wet out very nice and made a smooth hard surface.

    • @markspotter7398
      @markspotter7398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm bewildered that the paint rep told you to use water. I hope it was the HD or HomeRight rep, and not Behr's. Not to say you can _never_ get away with water dilution -- walls and ceilings in conditioned spaces being conceivable exceptions -- but I have learned to avoid it (esp. on exteriors or humid areas) if I didn't want early call-backs.
      I'd like to know how the PPG goes for you. It seems they've really kicked up their "game" lately, at least marketing-wise. Homebuilders here in N.Tex are specifying PPG more lately. I've heard only good things about their product.

    Finally a paint sprayer review by someone who understand about paint and painting...
    TH-cam is full of first time user reviews about many stuff, which is OK, but I certainly need expert reviews like this, to get a better understanding.
    I was just about to bang my head against the wall, when the first time users were “amazed” by their results, which were awful in fact for me.
    Thank you.....

    I like to mix about 10-15% water based polyurethane into latex for a smooth flow, self leveling, and a superior toughness and durability. Been doing that with my airless Spraytech for almost 20 years, and it worked excellent thru my new HVLP.

    I have one of these sprayers. I've been spraying BIN shellac primer with no problems on cabinet doors. I'm not exactly the neatest artist but this machine does seem to make it easy with very little overspray. No thinning needed. I'm here on youtube trying to learn how best to clean the sprayer. If it gets too dirty I start seeing speckles of dried paint getting laid down. Better learn how to fix this before top coating! Which by the way we are going to try Behr's pre-cat epoxy.

    I bought an Earlex 5500 a while back, but from your results may have been able to achieve the same results for far less money. Seem to have to thin paint more than 10 per cent to spray good, using Valspar cabinet enamel. Really enjoy your great content.

    The Handyman, thanks for the reply. I will definitely watch the other cabinet videos. I'm always up for learning other ways to do things/improve my process. I have 28 doors to paint in a 1 car garage so I'm hanging pvc pipes from the exposed joists, drilling cup hooks into the top/bottom of the doors (whichever side won't be visable) & then hanging them on wooden hangers to spray then transfer to my pvc racks to dry. I'm also using an alkyd paint and I spoke to a rep for them and they emailed me the HVLP spray recommendations for their product (no more than 8oz water per gallon or 2oz pet quart). I'm hoping that will suffice for the viscosity needed to use this sprayer. Anyways, thanks again for your reply. ..off to watch the other cabinet painting videos you made! :-)

    PPG-BREAKTHROUGH
    Breakthrough is a incredibly durable latex paint. It's in a class of its own. Sherwin Williams has nothing to compare to it. It's rated for Fork lift traffic to emphasize the durabilty point. It's awesome on wood windows as it's formula keeps them from sticking. Its perfect for high traffic doors, cabinets, trim etcetera. It drys hard so its never tacky feeling. The dry time is its only ussue in my opinion. It drys extremely quickly, so brushing is a never, and rolling requires experience and speed. You must keep a constant wet edge. When spraying, say like a front door for example, I like to do it first thing in the morning before it gets hot out and the more humidity the better to help promote a slower dry time. Adding a latex extender like Flotrol also helps. Even spraying requires you move fast. Done correctly though, you won't find a better product currently in my opinion. This is just one of PPG'S great products. Certainly worth the added expense. One last note... I painted my Ford Ranger with it two years ago, and it still looks great.

    I've used a compressor, a standalone semi-pro HVLP and also bought one of these. From what I can tell this one, the Wagner and the one I bought from Aldi are all made by the same company.
    I run from spraying every time because I get a lot of airborne spray, usually a poor finish and too much time spent on masking and clean up. When I say airborne - the stuff is over 2 metres away all over everything. By the time I've figured out the consistency I can use a conventional roller/brush, clean up and be home watching youtube.
    I understand for large projects it's probably worth it. Or maybe I need to spend more time practicing.

    I just purchased, based on your video. QUESTION I'm painting same doors as you, I already have 2 coats on by hand,with a bit of "orange peel" look. If I go over one more time with sprayer,would that smooth out?

    • @jmat7103
      @jmat7103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Light sand with 150 grit and spray one more coat. Bunch of things to troubleshoot the orange peel... paint too thick, distance too close, might have to turn the dial on the sprayer down a bit, moving too slow while spraying, fan not in the right direction, correct tip for the application and sprayer not cleaned properly. Thats all I can think of now.

    Great video man.. I bought one 3 weeks ago and painted a desk, kinda messed up because I didn't thin the paint at first. Then I thinned it out with thinner instead of water . That made matters worse. Finally I used water but I think I thinned it out way too much because the paint was dripping too much on the desk .. this video helped for the future.👍🏽

    I myself spray kitchen cabinets all the time and use my Titan 440 airless, using a Titan HEA tip. 311 or 411, I can use them knowing that aero soling is not a problem, because you can turn your pump down to 800 psi, which in turn lowers your overspray and aero soling.

      It could work. I haven't sprayed any latex paint that wasn't thinned down a little.

    Dont worry, you wont die that quickly from overspray. I takes 3-5 years from experience. The ones that use a shirt last around 7.

    How was the overspray with that sprayer? I have the less fancy model of that sprayer and there was a lot of overspray.

      there is no over spray that I noticed. With the right tip and flow control it sprays great.

    Hey was th paint smooth when dried or was it slightly rough....? i bougt the Homeright sprayer and tried it ,but my finish was a lil rought....any ideas on what i can do ...i use the Sherwin William Pro classic enamal paint...

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine came out perfectly smooth like a factor finish. You need to thin the paint and get the pressure right for the amount of thinning you did.

    • @jesterraj
      @jesterraj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thx...i thinned to the requirementwhich was 25 sec .for the paint..

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 25 sec. seems a little thick but I don't know if we were using the same size cup. I sanded between coats, used compressed air to blow the dust off and tacked off the cabinets. I put on 3 coats. the last coat was put on really wet.

    • @TheHandyman1

      Its not the best tool for the job but it will work depending on the type of paint.

    • @mhasan1

      The Handyman thanks for the response. I am using latex paint for a small sized room. Approximately 250sqft

    What brand sprayer is that?

  • @dhirajjdewan8069
    @dhirajjdewan8069 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shouldn't you have put primer on first before painting with regular paint? Anytime someone hits the cabinets the dings will lose paint. Also, I learned to use a roller between coats to insure even painting.

    Interesting fact about HomeRight - they were acquired by Wagner late last year. I guess they were worth buying by a known name in the painting business, hopefully they will be around for a while.

    What's the duty cycle? How many gallons does it say it can spray before it's done?

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duty cycle? Its not a welder. 39 fluid ounces. 450 watts. click the link for the specs

    • @rathorrath401

      The Handyman. Maybe an incorrect term. Most sprayers have a gallons per year or per life.
      My graco x5 has a recommended 50 gallons per year i think.
      Of course you can go above that with proper maintenance and care but it still is a good indication of the scope of work.
      I am looking for a hand sprayer for small rooms, doors, and trim for my handyman business and i was curious if this has a high enough recommended work life.

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read everything I could find on it. It comes with a 2 year warranty. Nothing about how many gallons of paint it can spray before it dies. I see that my Graco ProX7 has a recommended usage of 300 gallons per year. That might be something that is specific to Graco I have never seen it before.
