- Welcome back! In this video I will discuss three different finish sprayers and show the differences and similarities between them. I will also be sharing my thoughts on each one and talk about exactly what I use each of them for.

I have both the Graco VSP which is a step up from the DS you have here and the Homeright Super finish max which sounds like its one step up from the sprayer you had experience with. I bought the Graco first and quickly learned the limitations. It sprayed paint/primer great but it was a wider fan than what I would have liked for furniture and even just spraying one furniture piece I had to refill the cup. Like you said cleaning wasn't all that bad and the carry bag is nice to have. BUT, you can't spray a finish with this thing. You get two tips with the unit that are both intended to be used with paint/stain and thats it. There is not even an option to buy/use any other tips than the two that come with the unit. So for paint and stain on small exterior projects I'd say get the Graco.
The super finish max, however, is a whole different experience. It comes with three tips and I was able to spray chalk paint, clean, change tip, then spray poly. If you buy the extra cleaning kit it makes cleaning a little quicker too. So for furniture painting/finishing I'd say go with the Homeright Super. I can't say I've ever had an issue with clogging but I also make sure to clean good between using. When I apply multiple coats of paint or poly I just keep it in the container which is another thing you can't do with the Graco.
I agree with you that the Graco sprays paint very well but I can't say definitively that it does a better job than the homeright and for furniture I think it sprays a little too much product. But I agree if you were just painting or staining outdoor decks or fences it would be a good choice because of the ability to use it upside down and funky angles. But for a one stop shop for furniture I would get the Homeright. Just my experience and $.02.

Painted my house with the Graco.. worked great but the paint capacity was low..
I tried to paint some cabinet doors and it shot blotches on the door faces.. was not impressed. Dunno if it was the angle I was holding it. I painted some shelves and it did great.

That Graco is made in Rogers, Minnesota. I bought one, and, it works very well. It takes just short time to get into the basics of its operation. I used mine to paint a new shop/garage building. I used a primer, and, then a finish coat. The top coat was a heavy solid color latex stain. It worked perfectly. The building is 32 by 24, with 9 foot sidewalls. and, is about 14 feet tall on the gable ends. I put the finish coat on the whole building in about 7 hours, it was a rough sawn siding, with grooves, so, i brushed it out as i sprayed. I spent about 150 bucks, and, also got the pump conditioner and some extra paint cups. You do not have to clean the sprayer if you are going to use it within 24 hours. you just turn the tip. and, wipe it off. I got the one with the smaler 32 0z cup, but, i think i can get the 42 oz cup for it. It was well worth the money.
So review the finishes and not used the Graco for finishes. That was the point of the whole video. Or did I missed something.

is it fair to compare a $63 homeright to a $146 Graco? How does a $146 Homeright compare?
john Frederickson I was speaking to the three that I have used and owned. It wouldn’t be fair for me to talk about one I have no experience with. All three are entry level, diy, hobbyist options. The price is different but all similar characteristics.
I have always hesitated to purchase a paint spray system simply because I thought it might be impossible to clean. This was an outstanding video. I am an avid DIYER and novice woodworker and recently built a few cabinet doors for some built ins. After brushing on a primer I was extremely disappointed in the brush marks. Will most likely go with the graco as I don’t see myself using it for anything other than paint. Your explanation gave me confidence it was worth the purchase. Thanks for the advise.

Do you still feel the same about the Graco 360DSP, would there be any benefit to going with the VSP for a little more cost for doing home outdoor furniture projects.
I think the VSP is the better choice but either would work well for most applications like that.
My Graco is extremely spotty. There have been many times that I have to hold it upside down to spray . In all honesty I haven't been real impressed with my Graco. I'm thinking about giving the Homeright a try; there are a ton of good reviews on it.

I bought the graco DS 2 weeks ago but after seeing this video went ahead and got the rockler as well. I’m new to woodworking and have a project where I’ll be spraying a water based varnish (Total Boat Halcyon). From what I picked up the rockler has a more fine finishing 1.5mm spray nozzle. The graco only has that on the higher end models. I also want something I can use for around the house paint (painting rooms and some exterior painting), but realistically will use it more for woodworking projects and spraying finishes. I’ll review them both and keep the one that works best for me.
Each are good for different things. I used the Rockler for finishes and still use the Graco for painting walls and such.
I hope you see this question because I'm really confused right now. I am a sign maker (you can check me out on IG @mightymahree). I have been looking for a spray gun to suit my needs for months!!! I finally went out and bought the Gracco 360 VSP at home depot for 270. I havent used it, but I have watched a ton of videos on it. After watching so many video's, I'm thinking I made the wrong choice. I really want something small, compact, easy to clean, that I could use to spray my laser cut or scrolled pieces, sign backers, name signs, etc. I am really great with spray painting so I thought this would be great for me so that I could use it indoors with a spray tent on the other side of my wood shop. I wish I could find something that I could use with acrylic paint and just start spraying. Every paint sprayer I am seeing requires you to put a shit ton of paint in to even get it going. I don't want that. I even considered buying an air brush machine but then people were saying it was only good for shading. What do you think is my best bet? Small, compact, easy to clean and switch colors for painting wood letters/pieces.
Well I can only speak of systems I have used. When it comes to switching materials regularly, something with a bag or liners may be a smart option. Personally, I would like to have two. One for clear finishes and then one maybe to use with paints or stains.
Hi On the craft table, I'm currently in the same type of position, did you ever find a solution that works for you? I too have a new unopened graco vsp, and I'm thinking of exchanging it for something else. Currently I'm thinking of going with an air compressor and a pneumatic HVLP spray gun. Spray guns are relatively cheap and have fan and flow control.
I through that graco 360 in the trash. The piston broke. Why you think they have so many broken ones for sale in ebay.

I would love to see you demo with tips and tricks with the Graco. including a full cleaning. There are plenty of people painting up and down and back and forth, I would like you to concentrate on the rest. How big of a mess can I expect? What can I do to minimize the mess? What you do in prep work, lay down cardboard, tape or fans?

i have been debating buying a spray gun but am concerned about overspray in my small garage shop. What do you recommend for wipe on finish for tables and small furniture ? I have used Minwax WipeOn Poly but am open to other recomendations. hopefully you will reply with brands that are available in Canada. Thanks.
I always recommend general finishes products if you are going to use things like polyurethane. Otherwise Rubio is my favorite

It is now 2021 so I’m wanting to know if you have any updates. I am a woman furniture flipper in my garage and I use a lot of chalk paint which sprayer would you still recommend
I think if you are flipping furniture as a business and are doing a lot of painting, I would look at investing in a turbine system. It will give you much better result in the end and is more versatile.

I bought a Wagner but returned it before I even used it. I was V worried about having overspray everywhere. Does anybody know how bad the overspray is? Dont really want to have to cover everything inside with plastic.
You will have overspray with anything. The higher end models of HVLP systems allow you to minimize the overspray. I would still throw plastic sheets down either way to assist with cleanup.
any tips to reduce the cloud? I used my homeright in my shop and wound up with a fine layer of dried polyurethane dust all over the shop. Thankfully it appears to have dried in the air and was just duct, not actual wet poly stuck to everything. I'm not sure if a different sprayer, or different technique, would fix the issue?
BnR Labs you just have to account for it and lay down some overspray blankets. I don’t know if there is anything else that would help. Of spray outside if you can

I have purchase the same Graco 360 DSP Sprayer. In this video you mention "You run mineral spirits through the sprayer." I assume you don't use Pump Armor? How much of the mineral spirits do you use? Do you leave the flex container on? Please help John
Yes I’ll rinse everything of an clean the gun. Then put the bag back on and run some mineral spirits through it

My question is, I going to build 2 30x22 bath vanities, so what clamps should a DWYER get to start out with? I see there are many choice such as handles and the clamping ends.
My most used clamps are Bessey Parallel clamps

Depends on the project. I liked my Rockler for finish and I enjoyed the Graco for paints.
Thanks for the great video. I was going back and forth between those three sprayers , I think the rockler is the one . I do a lot of finishing . I build guitars and the rockler has the fine needle for the gun that makes a fine mist. The 1.0 needle is what I need and I see the Graco doesn't have that. So thanks again.

My Home depot want 200$ for that same model.... i was looking into theses and I am amazed that they have went up in price since your video.
I am disappointed. the VSP model is like 240$ right now from Depot, need to buy it for Lattice painting on a deck.
so Graco is airless but not HVLP vs Rockler HVLP.....so for indoor use does the Graco create much overspray?
Hi, and thank you for the comparison. I recently bought the Rockler sprayer. I have had the Graco for a few years now.
My reason for buying the Rocker was because my Graco had a lot of overspray, which required me to cover just about everything in the room. I read that HVLP systems cause much less overspray. Can you comment on that? What has been your experience with overspray using the Rockler? How is it compared to the Graco?

I see lots of plastic! Plastic and most good paints do not get along with each other. I will stick to old school pressure pots, quart cups, and air-assisted.

Hey Jason, great video as always, lots of great information. Just wanted to know, will the Graco yield a smooth (free of orange Peel) type of finish with latex paint? I'm looking to paint kitchen cabinet doors and want a professional looking finish. Thanks for your help.
InfinityVideoNiagara there is a bit of a learning curve with using sprayers. The Graco has a pulsating action which can be seen in the paint if you aren’t use to it. After a little practice, it gives excellent results. I did a whole mudroom with it the first time I used it and I was extremely pleased with the results!

InfinityVideoNiagara I believe so. There are clearly more professional options but they are substantially more expensive. It’s like anything, you get what you pay for. With that being said, I’m very impressed with what I paid for this sprayer.

InfinityVideoNiagara I had very good results with it as well. I felt like I got more clogs with it but that was probably my own fault. I never strained paint early on and learned to do it with that gun. I honestly got tired of thinning paint as well which is why I bought a Graco as a dedicated paint sprayer
Brian what tools would you recommend for someone on a budget to put together for a small shop. It’s in my single car garage. I have a dewalt 12 miter saw an old craftsman router and a cordless drill and skill saw. I am gonna build some cabinets, a hutch and a farmers table style island. I can’t make up my mind on types of table saw vs track saw router table etc. Tbis fellow army vet could use some advise.

Thanks for the message. I would say invest in a decent jobsite table saw to get started. Say maybe a Dewalt or a Ridgid. You already have some of the other basics. Clamps are always a great thing to have and are a necessity. A track saw isn't something that I would suggest to someone just starting out. It has many purposes but is great for those who use a lot of sheet goods. That is a tool that you could wait on.

My Graco Truecoat DS pump failed on the third use.. and it was already past warranty.
Ok, I’m a bit confused. I always used an airless with water based latex paints and an air powered sprayer for solvent based paints and finishes. Can an airless do both quite happily? Can an HVLP do latex? I need some guidance here. I gave away my older airless to a friend after I did my whole house with it using exterior latex paint and I have done oil based finishes using HF HVLP gun with compressor but really needs compressor to run too much. I’m sure turbine powered unit would be better. So, I am ready to purchase new gun(s). Can one technology meet all my needs?
I think you could use most sprayers for most applications, however, you will get drastically different results. I now have a Power 5 Turbine HVLP unit from Apollo and I have no doubt it will meet all of my needs with excellent results

I've been using sprayers for a few years now as a pro painter and have owned several HVLP and airless systems.I didn't want to spend much on equipment so I tried things that were low in price but still give acceptable results. My first HVLP was a wagner for stains mostly and had to thin latex paint because the turbine wasn't strong enough to blow out unthinned latex. Todays "cheap" HVLP machines are strong enough to manage any paint and oil based products. They do give an orange peel type of finish with thick materials but work well on exterior projects. The awesome thing about the wagner HVLP machines I've had was the control I had while spraying railings on a deck for example.If you pull the trigger in just to activate the turbine and pull just a little bit more a very fine stream of product comes through the nozzle.Very little overspray. You want more product coming out ,you pull the trigger a little harder.On an airless gun you pull the trigger and product will fly out in full force according to the pressure and tip you use.No control with the trigger. For better finish with thick latex and larger projects, large surfaces I use airless sprayers. The viscosity of an oil based product compared to latex is not very different so any machine that has enough pressure to blow latex will do oil as well.It depends on what types of projects you do mostly. Exterior painting requires thicker coats for better protection from the elements.Fine finishes need slower drying times, more atomizition and thinner coats, so normally you can achieve a better quality easier with airless sprayers when using thick products, by adjusting pressure, using proper tips. These machines can do it all, but can take 30 minutes to clean well.

Bent, I run a hobby wood shop in my basement. Over the winter I make a lot of poplar projects that I paint. I like using behr alkyd semi-gloss enamel paint on wall cabinets and similar projects of that size, but painting with a brush on medium size projects takes a long time and leaves brush marks. Do you think I'd be happier spraying on this paint, and if so which of the sprayers you've used would you recommend?
Conor McKee you would definitely save time, enjoy it more, and have better results. If you were painting mostly, I would recommend the Graco. To be fair, all the sprayers I mentioned would work well. The Graco is what I have been most impressed with.

Thanks for the videos. I have had a Graco Ultra Corded Airless Handheld Paint Sprayer in my Amazon cart for the last 2 weeks and still have not pushed to button. I also have the Rocker Sprayer boxed up and never opened. Most of my wood projects require painted finishes for vanity face frames and doors and I want a professional quality finish. If I do want a wood finish other then paint like on small gift boxes, I usually wipe on some type of oil finish. Most of my house jobs are indoors like doors and baseboards and some wall areas to cover up repaired drywall but not entire rooms. I am absolutely terrible with paint and brushes and rollers and I love the idea of not having to mix paint. Do you feel the quality of the HVLP can be matched with the Graco Airless handheld and an appropriate tip like an Graco FFLP210 or Graco FFLP310? and I can just get away with one unit (the Graco Airless) and just sell off the Rockler. The other option is a Turbine HVLP - the fair cost comparison between the Graco would be a Fuji Semi-PRO-2 - but again back to mixing paint unless you go up to $1300 for a 5 stage unit.

@@bentswoodworking Since it appears you make a living doing woodwork and finish carpentry, do you consider you airless sprayer giving you the quality you need spraying paint on paint-grade materials for work you do for customers?
Peter Doyle I have been very pleased with the results. Obviously there are products that would give a perfect result but they would most likely be far more expensive. Put it this way, I have never had someone say that paint looks bad.

Jason Autry paint varies quite a bit but for finish General finishes is definitely my go to. The majority of paint is Sherman Williams or behr
Great review. I've been looking for this exact comparison. I have the Rockler and considered the Graco for a renovation project in my old house. I ended up spraying a room with the Rockler and it did a fantastic job with both Primer and paint. Yes I thinned the latex but I simply poured 1/2 bottle of water in the gallon of paint, mixed and started spraying. The rockler comes with two different tip sizes. One for thicker material and one for thinner. I've sprayed shellac, latex and poly with the Rockler with outstanding results from a cheap little sprayer. I get better results with less material used. I love that little sprayer. Thanks again.

You didn’t evacuate the air on the Grayco correctly...Do you want to tilt it so the cop that releases the air is at the highest point
Any issues using oil based paint on metal objects, cabinets, etc.

Thanks for the video cleared up few of my questions looking for a sprayer. I'm looking at Graco products which sprayer do you suggest for all purpose like the walls in my house then I want to paint my fence I just don't want a piece of equipment laying around considering price of Graco. If the question is repative I do apologise thank you for the review if I can give you more than one thumbs up I would do it....
I would say this dual speed or the variable speed would be perfect for projects around the house like that

Do you use the dual speed feature?
I prefer the higher speed but have used the low speed setting a few times. If I had the VSP I would probably use different settings more often

I don't know the exact Homeright sprayer you have but I have the HomeRightSuper Finish Max Extra HVLP Paint Sprayer which goes for around $100 (less on frequent sales) and I love it. For the money I think it works great and with this one you do not have to thin the paint. There are a few pieces to clean but I can normally clean the gun in about 5 minutes or so... No more than 10 minutes.
BronkBuilt I had the Homeright finish max sprayer which was the model before the one you have.
I have the newer Homeright Finish Max Extra as well and no thinning the paint on this model. Love it!

but oh man, i feel a bit bummed. i purchased the home right based on your last video on home right :P - I have done one small project with painting cabinets and it came out very very well. But, now i wonder if i could have done any better with rockler.
Question: when you talk about painting, what sort of paint project are you talking about? are you talking about furniture projects (cabinets, cabinet dooors etc) ?
Danish Qamar yes cabinets and furniture bases that sort of thing. And don’t feel bummed with the Homeright, you mad a good choice. All three are good guns. Even though I am not using it now, I always enjoyed my Homeright. Keep using it and learning with it, then later you can look at upgrading to something better than any of the guys I talked about here. 👍🏻

Great video. I have a very cheap sprayer which has worked OK, but since it was my first, I think I messed it up before I started to figure out what I was doing. Now your video inspired me to look into a better sprayer and the Graco looks interesting. I looked around for the best prices, reviews, etc. and am VERY close to pulling the trigger, but I'm still not sure. I make furniture and am now making a bunk bed, where this sprayer would work great, but I might not make another item that requires painting for a while. But I'm also building a new house, so I was wondering if I could use it to paint the walls with this Graco. I know there are better, more professional, faster, whatever sprayers, but I'm not sure if those would work with the smaller projects. Can you shine your light on this from a user perspective? I posed the question to Graco, specifically mentioning that I'm not looking into a bigger model, but they came back suggesting a bigger (more expensive) unit anyway for the walls. They claimed this Graco would be limited to 2 gallon, whatever that means (spray 2 gallon, let it rest? change tips? throw it away?). Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Robert Echten Well it’s not a matter of whether or not the gun would work to spray walls in the house. I am sprayed My entire shop and sprayed 5 gallons of paint through it and didn’t experience one issue. The only downside to having the small handheld unit is that I had to continuously refill the paint cup.
Robert Echten now if you can live with that then I’d say pull the trigger on a smaller gun because it is very very handy on smaller projects.

I don’t have any regrets I don’t think. It has served me well and does a great job for what the gun costs. I enjoy using it when I have a need for it.
Also, to be fair, I don’t have any experience with the Pro model.

These garbage sprayers are DESIGNED to scam DIYers who don't know what they are doing into THROWING THEIR MONEY AWAY. Cheap tools & materials represent the single biggest mistake DIYers make when approaching these types of projects. A good tool is not an expense, it is an asset that can be sold for 80%-90% of it's value once the job is done, and in the end it will produce superior results and require much less sanding/work. Never use an airless sprayer (Graco) where a fine finish is required, like with cabinets. Best budget HVLP Systems: 1st choice: Fuji 2202 Semi-PRO 2 (2203 gravity fed version) for $439, & 2nd choice: Earlex HV5500 for $299.

I understand Brent, my comment was not a knock on you at all. BTW have you tried the Fugi or the Earlex? They are excellent! I had the Graco Truecoat 2 for 1 job and found it to be very heavy. The one you had is definitely lighter, but still isn't great for cabinets.

disagree on airless not producing great results... 209 or 309 tip on an airless and your results will be stellar

A little of an unfair comparison here, the grace is an airless sprayer the other is a very poor excuse for a HVLP, the finish you get and time taken to complete a spray job will always show in favour of one over the other depending on the type of job you are doing.
If you want to compare HVLP’s with the low cost unit you have there, use the cheap and cheerful against say a Graco 9.5 or an Apollo ASI Precision 5. To compare Airless try a Graco against a Wagner or an Airlessco, what you have done is like comparing a Rolex with a dime store special

By looking at the pictures. I believed these paints are not very good. You can see it so messy and dirty. These clips are mostly advertising for the Mfg and not a pure review.

Wing. Review some videos by pro paint contractors and you will notice that their sprayers, which are pro units, are also full of paint particles. It is unavoidable especially when used inside. Why do you think they dress like they are going into a radioactive area?
