    Time, time, time
    See what's become of me
While I looked around for my possibilities
I was so hard to please
    Look around
    Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

For people who don't know it because they're too young, RD Jr. was an addict and practically killed himself because of that. Look at where he is now. I just wanted to mention it because if you're an addict, don't give up. He was in such bad shape and he fought his way back. If you're despondent, just remember you can fight addiction. @@WithaJoeFro That's because you do not know the backstory to what was going on in the band and what eventually led to them breaking up. Susanna Hoffs was being "groomed" by producers as the lead, the face of the band (which, I might rightly point out, was a good decision, she is by far the most charismatic, as most will agree) - but the other band members could not accept that and that led to fracturing, posturing, and the whole "only me" syndrome that eventually broke the band up.

The Bangles made a lot of good covers, they really had a sound that improved many covers. Susanna Hoffs may not have a wide vocal range but she´s quite talented as a singer and composer. Check her out she´s still doing original music and when she sings covers she really gives makes then sound her own. I think she´s more of a bohemian than a pop star. Check her work along Mathew Sweet where most critics praise her singing style.

    "Hazy Shade Of Winter"
    (originally by Simon & Garfunkel)
Time, time, time, see what's become of me
    While I looked around
    For my possibilities
I was so hard to please
But look around, leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
    Hear the salvation army band
Down by the riverside, it's bound to be a better ride
    Than what you've got planned
Carry your cup in your hand
And look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say, but if your hopes should pass away
    Simply pretend
That you can build them again
Look around, the grass is high
The fields are ripe, it's the springtime of my life
Ahhh, seasons change with the scenery
    Weaving time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me
But look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
    Look around, leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground...

This is a fine cover of Simon & Garfunkel's version! I've always liked Vicki Peterson's guitar part here...it really rocks! And nicest of all, it's clearly a band effort. In those days, the media was seemingly determined to put Susannah Hoffs out in front of the band, and it led to some tension in the group, although Susannah herself wasn't any more comfortable with the way the media presented them than the rest of the Bangles were. So hearing them playing this as a band is a real treat! It shows that all four of them together were more than the sum of their parts!

    • @MightyWomanOfGod9050

I mean, I can't entirely fault the media. Of the four, I think Hoffs had the best voice (@MightyWomanOfGod talks about Vicki, but Hoffs can seriously belt it out, too. See Eternal Flame) and probably the most marketable look.
I see why that fed into the tensions that caused the band to split, but it's also understandable why the media and label focused on Hoffs in the first place.

Susanna was so respectful and humble about doing the cover and meeting Paul Simon after it did so well on the charts. On the Bangles website, she talks about meeting Paul Simon after watching Simon & Garfunkel in concert: "We had loved Simon & Garfunkel, and naturally we also loved Paul as a solo artist, and we were really happy to see them perform and then go backstage for a meet-and-greet. This was after our version of 'Hazy Shade of Winter' had come out, and although I don't think we talked about it very much, I remember he was very sweet, and I'm sure he was happy the song had done so well. I think it's always good to have your song covered, but it was a little uncomfortable talking to him about it, because when Simon & Garfunkel did the song, it had gone to #17 (sic), and the Bangles version went to #2. You're proud, of course, but you never want to come off as full of yourself or arrogant you know?"

Happy Birthday Susanna Hoffs born on January 17, 1959. She is an American singer and guitarist, best known as a co-founder of the pop-rock band The Bangles. Hoffs founded The Bangles (originally called the Bangs) in 1981 with Debbi and Vicki Peterson. They released their first full length album All Over the Place on Columbia Records in 1984. Hoffs started a solo career after The Bangles disbanded in 1989. She released her first solo album, When You're a Boy, in 1991. She later formed the faux British 1960s band Ming Tea with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet. Hoffs has also appeared in a supporting role in several movies. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susanna_Hoffs

I spent ten years of my life as a professional classical musician with a keen interest in pop. This has always been one of the most musical bands, and something I'll point out is the very prominent orchestral percussion Sleigh Bells - these were developed by Leroy Anderson in the 1940's for "Sleigh Ride" and have an indelible musical connotation, so for the Bangles to pick up on "winter" in their cover and then use this orchestration of Simon and Garfunkel is .... just really really good. Add to that their chorusing which is indelibly mixed up with Christmas ... and the Advent Bell -- this is a much much smarter song than most people know ... and that's what the video is about - they show a "maudlin" basic club but at the same time are doing this music full of High Church and Advent musical references. It's just so good.

Also worthy of consideration is the 2021 Foxes and Fossils version. The Bangles version leaves out a couple of lines from the S&G original ("vodka and lime"), but the F&F version adds it back in while staying true to the Bangles. Slightly different harmonies from either S&G's duo or Bangles foursome since only three ladies singing, but very well done. Have a listen: th-cam.com/video/MZtj5ezyL7U/w-d-xo.html

Too much was made of Susanna Hoffs during the Bangles' heyday; just as much love for Vicki Peterson, one of the most underrated guitarists ever, her sister Debbi on drums and one-time Runaway Michael Steele on bass. All lovely, still are, and this one proved they can play and sing, with all four sharing lead vocals. They still can play, though Michael retired a few years back.

Agree 100%. Remakes are almost never an improvement. The exceptions prove the rule (e.g. Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower). This is one of them. And I too am a fan of S&G, and I do like the original version -- but the energy in this song is just amazing. The lead guitar just drives it at breakneck speed, never lets up.

    Time, time, time
    See what's become of me
While I looked around for my possibilities
I was so hard to please
    Look around
    Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
    Hear the Salvation Army band
    Down by the riverside
Bound to be a better ride
    Than what you've got planned
Carry your gun in your hand
    Look around
    Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say
But if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend that you can build them again
    Look around
    The grass is high
    The fields are ripe
It's the springtime of my life
    Seasons change with the scenery
    Weavin' time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me?
    Look around
    Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
    Look around
    Leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground

It sounds more like, "Carry a cup in your hand". But, the movie makes you want to assume "gun". Even the original S & G song sounds like "carry your cup in your hand".

@@KingofPepsi"“Hazy Shade of Winter” by The Bangles
      BY AMANDA LONDON · JUNE 13, 2022
"We’ve already looked into the original version as this song, as put out by Simon & Garfunkel during the 1960s. And lyrically The Bangles only made a few, in the grand scheme of things insignificant changes to the lyrics. That is to say that the initial storyline of the vocalist being in a depressed state remains very much intact. And it is such that she is not pleased with what she has accomplished, the state she is currently in nor her perception of where her life is headed into the future, as she doesn’t see any type of relief in sight.
And this may not only be a matter of being plagued by defeating thoughts but also, as implied by the second verse, going through some serious financial difficulties also.
So all things considered, The Bangles noting that “the sky is a hazy shade of winter”, “a patch of snow on the ground” and what have you can be taken as metaphorical. That is to say that such observations aren’t about the actual environment that surrounds the vocalist but are rather indicative of her pessimistic disposition. And no, there isn’t anything inherently evil with winter or the snow. But poetically, such imagery is often used to point to the notion of depression or sadness".
