I think the thing about Rob is that he's good at a lot of things, but only in like some situations. Like theoretically, he has good tools at every range, but in practice he still tends to lose interactions to characters that actually specialize at that range (as it should be). Like downtilt do go brrrrr but also good luck trying to out mash a fox player, and sure nair is still a ha-ha-funny-safe midrange tool, but good luck trying to outplay cloud in the midrange. So as many tools as he has, you still have to actually outplay your opponent by counter playing the way that they want to play. This does not mean he's bad, by any stretch, but especially when in many matchups, advantage state against ROB is just as strong as his advantage state, it's not hard to see why he doesn't actually win many tournaments. I think his ceiling is limited by being a generalist, his meta prevalence, as well as his hurtbox and his somewhat awkward (if still strong) mobility tools (compared to top tiers not other characters).
As a Steve main, I'd love to see a Steve video. Aside from Steve, I think the next best contender for a video like this is Wolf or Pikachu. Most top tiers have just one obvious strength that makes them good, but those two I think are a bit more nuanced, with a number of strengths, and, in Wolf's case, many of them are not immediately apparent
I think the guide done by izaw smash covering wolf covered it well describing him as "playing dirty" as he has such an obnoxious etheral and fast projectile combined with other good combo frame data a good wolf player basically controls the pace of the game at their whim. If he wants to go fast he he goes in if the opponent wants to go faster gun goes brr and you have reflector to beat out the opponents projectiles and force them to come to you. His main disadvantage being he needs a hard read to kill the oponent. The better you are at neutral and reading your opponent the more wolf absolutely wrecks them.
Oh by the way there’s one thing you forgot to mention for ROB that’s quite import- ARM ROTER REFLECTS PROJECTILES. Yeah in case you thought you could zone a zoner for some reason he could just send it back in a second like it’s not the same move that killed you with that combo at zero.
Fun fact : Rosalina’s Nair beats Rob’s when facing back, Rosa’s upair beats or trades with Rob’s Nair from below, and Ron’s Nair isn’t safe on Rosa’s shield if it hits Luma (in terms of pure frame data)
I want to see an episode on Pythra next. Rob's problem is that he is just above average in almost all aspects, but Pythra is flat out broken in every way.

Hey whydo this is one of my favorite smash related videos ever. Your humor is just top notch. Please make another one of these videos (for another character) if you find the time ❤
Making this type of video a series would be very cool to see from you. You could make your next one on top tiers like Bowser Jr, who falls for eternity when a light breeze hits him while using up-special, since ya know, balancing his insane move set in this balanced game. I mean do you really want to get hit by his fully charged cannon ball that deals 25% and comes out the earliest on frame 37?
Rob disadvantage makes easy to string even with his cringe moveset the star fox characters are great choice for this match, fox is especially good due to gravity so his combos are harder to do.
This video has reminded me once more that WaDi is and always will be a goddamn enigma in the Ultimate scene. Literally the only person that can make it to the top rankings and not know a single thing about the game he's playing, I love it. Nice video btw, a series may be asking too much with the stupid number of characters in Ultimate, but more videos like this would be awesome!
You should do the same type of video for Aegis. I don’t she’s THAT bad to fight against because I’ve gotten better at the MU, but she’s undeniably one of the most privileged characters in the game so yeah.

@@WhyDo Every single character in the game has an infinite on Sent and hes still flat out the best. Expert Sentinel players, especially in the extremely common mirrors, were compared to gundam pilots. Not only is he extremely threatening at a low skill floor with the most simple rocket punch drone loops, the skill cieling is basically infinite. ...Also, hes only the best of like 12 characters you can describe as 'full screen one touch kill zoners'. If you enjoyed hearing about Sent, go look at Cable, Storm, Spiral, and so on, and so on. Man I love marvel
I love character analysis videos that go in depth like this but with the funny haha's in between. Love your work! Would absolutely love to see more. maybe even stuff about low tiers if you think there would be an audience for that
Honestly, Rob is a great character to have in the meta. Easy and fun to combo. A projectile you get to play with as well. He is most certainly top tier, but he feels good to run over when you get the chance.
id like to think of rob as more of a brawler with trap/zoner elements. his projectiles have enough down time to where he really doesnt zone that hard. where his "zoning" really comes in is with gyro. not firing it, but having it on the stage. it's extremely dangerous being between him and gyro, it's what makes it so strong. and if he ever manages to hit a gyro launch, the main benefit of it is not only launching people, but also being able to pick up the gyro quicker to become an even greater threat as a brawler. however, with gyro in play, he kinda loses all his midrange prowess. not only is laser slow, but it's also not threatening unless you allow it to charge. his gyro is like a resource that makes his neutral work. also, for as hated as his aerials, they are a lot easier to stuff than others in air-to-air and juggle situations due to a lot of high startup attacks. his fair is fast i guess? but it would have to be a hard read by the rob. his disadvantage in general is kinda really ass, though that's common knowledge. honestly a very interesting character to me. i think calling him "good at everything" and saying his only weakness is that he's big and heavy is kinda overselling the character, he's a resource character somewhat dependent on projectiles in neutral, that aren't always up for him to use. but he's honestly a brawler at heart.
As someone that always wanted a ROB as a kid but knew better than to shell out Ebay prices for one, I always enjoyed getting to use him in Smash. Hopefully that doesn't make me look like I'm just chasing top tiers but hey
for rob's up air DI, you can see a blue DI indicator before you get launched up. the best way to DI is DI towards the direction that the indicator is leaning towards. Esam has a video on DI about this. hope this helps more people survive his up air
As someone who actually did main R.O.B. very early in the game's life, I'm actually surprised to see this video, because... well, far as I know all of the individual pieces of this were true all through Ultimate, and at the time he was considered maybe upper-mid in a game with so many characters that 'upper-mid' was still putting him at, like, the 28th best. How did people suddenly notice R.O.B. was amazing? Was it just one player finally showing how to play him? Subtle buffs in the right places? Good matchups against new popular characters?
I don't think people realized just how significant the Arm Rotor changes were for his character, and how insanely far Dtilt could be pushed. But the biggest thing is probably his punish game, once people discovered gyro toss combos and then more recently double toss combos/the insanity that anathema does, people really started to see how nutty this character was. Other biggest thing though is honestly just those results I mentioned. Fact is, ROB just started winning! Suddenly he was everywhere and people were like "hmmmmmmmm there SURE ARE A LOT OF ROB PLAYERS........" edit: Also, for a specific moment, check out Zackray vs. Mkleo at Frostbite 2020: th-cam.com/video/QRdSkd5Lm5A/w-d-xo.html There, in early 2020, Zackray's ROB showed so many people what the character was capable of. He pushed the offstage frametraps+combos extremely far, to a degree a lot of people outside of Japan had never seen on a major stream before (over 1 million views, that's gotta mean something for public opinion!)

Can’t believe you didn’t mention how arms universally can’t be grabbed in this game, so sometimes standing grabs just can’t grab ROB’s pencil torso
I can’t believe Rob has exactly 3.73 weaknesses
And that one of them is that it's 10x harder to edge guard him than anyone else.
I like how ROB is essentially just a Smash-original character
all but 2 of his moves are random bs vaguely inspired by his appearance
"just above average" mf he's a zoner that kills you when you get close
We need a video about Diddy Kong. That monkey has commited too many war crimes and Diddy mains still somehow get away with saying he's not that good.
Great choice of music in the entire video, especially Word Dissassociation!
where's Mii Brawler set tier list part 2 WhyDo? where? you said last october, now what? did it vanish into the wind like my remaining self-esteem? I need answers and more importantly, I need -
Rob is big
@@WhyDo which is why he's actually mid tier :)
@@WhyDo Goddammit now I have to agree and forget my initial comment that I made. big boi big. self-esteem restored.
"so broken that his '3 best moves?' yeah, he has 4 of them" HOLY FUCK HE'S B R O K E N
"R.O.B. struggles bigly" 13:37
I just started maining Rob this week never played it before and can't find many guides so this kicks ass. and man I've been spiked to the bottom of the blast zone came back right below ledge did an up air dropped down accidentally used side b dropped down in the bubble and ya boy STILL MADE IT BACK. Unlimited power *activated*
Only in Smash could a toy be one of the best characters in the game.
Thank you for inspiring new rob players 🙏
I main mr game and watch so my brackets can be easier now
Dude you should *absolutely* make this a series, I don't even have feedback this is just fantastic
I started maining R.O.B. just cause I saw that one Brawl clip (you know the one) and I was like "gee, I guess I gotta give this guy a shot" and I was *not* expecting to become basically one of the best characters
great idea for a video and great execution, loved the editing lol
Hey whydo this is one of my favorite smash related videos ever. Your humor is just top notch. Please make another one of these videos (for another character) if you find the time ❤
Making this type of video a series would be very cool
to see from you.
ROB's side special is also a reflector if you get the timing right.
Mythra "53 frames of hitstun on Up-B even if it's ledge cancelled" Aegis
Foresight was unnecessary

I have written 24 videos for PGstats, however this statistical analysis that proves that WhyDo is a masher is still my proudest statistical achievement.
11:15 you bet it’s made of wood
As someone who doesn't really follow competitive smash and picked up ROB because he's fun to play, I was kinda surprised to learn he's broken. Once you explained it though, I can't believe I didn't see it earlier.
0:08 mvc2 sentinel
why is it always the bots
@@fortidogi8620 I'm dying reading about Sentinel right now 😭
...So there really is another fullscreen zoner with instant kill combos that can fly... and is a robot... and is "balanced" by having a big hitbox, landing in top tier... I love fighting games so much
@@WhyDo Every single character in the game has an infinite on Sent and hes still flat out the best.
Man I love marvel
comment for algorithm :)
I love character analysis videos that go in depth like this but with the funny haha's in between. Love your work! Would absolutely love to see more. maybe even stuff about low tiers if you think there would be an audience for that
Good video but I think you should've mentioned that ROB is big so I gotta dislike sry
Don't worry I'll correct myself now!
Rob is big
@@WhyDo Thank you for the insight I have changed the dislike to a like now.
I’m glad I subscribed. Good things happening to good content creators
This was so fun to watch, I’d love for this to be a series!
Honestly, Rob is a great character to have in the meta. Easy and fun to combo. A projectile you get to play with as well. He is most certainly top tier, but he feels good to run over when you get the chance.
Robot is an amazingly designed character with diverse tools to deal with any opponent and plastyle
id like to think of rob as more of a brawler with trap/zoner elements. his projectiles have enough down time to where he really doesnt zone that hard. where his "zoning" really comes in is with gyro. not firing it, but having it on the stage. it's extremely dangerous being between him and gyro, it's what makes it so strong. and if he ever manages to hit a gyro launch, the main benefit of it is not only launching people, but also being able to pick up the gyro quicker to become an even greater threat as a brawler. however, with gyro in play, he kinda loses all his midrange prowess. not only is laser slow, but it's also not threatening unless you allow it to charge. his gyro is like a resource that makes his neutral work. also, for as hated as his aerials, they are a lot easier to stuff than others in air-to-air and juggle situations due to a lot of high startup attacks. his fair is fast i guess? but it would have to be a hard read by the rob. his disadvantage in general is kinda really ass, though that's common knowledge. honestly a very interesting character to me. i think calling him "good at everything" and saying his only weakness is that he's big and heavy is kinda overselling the character, he's a resource character somewhat dependent on projectiles in neutral, that aren't always up for him to use. but he's honestly a brawler at heart.
3:02 “now, some of you may have noticed, that’s all the ranges” hahahaha🤣😂❤
Love how at 4:02 you said "it really limits" as soon as cloud used his limit
I haven't missed my ROB Upair DI a single time since liking and subscribing. Thank you, WhyDo!
This is probably the best 25 minute video about specifically R.O.B I’ve ever watched.
As someone that always wanted a ROB as a kid but knew better than to shell out Ebay prices for one, I always enjoyed getting to use him in Smash. Hopefully that doesn't make me look like I'm just chasing top tiers but hey
23:42 Bro the cut before the roll read 💀💀💀💀
This is the best and funniest character breakdown I’ve ever seen, I’d love one on snake/Pikachu!
for rob's up air DI, you can see a blue DI indicator before you get launched up. the best way to DI is DI towards the direction that the indicator is leaning towards. Esam has a video on DI about this. hope this helps more people survive his up air
If it wasn't so hard to see on any stage that isn't dark.
Its hard to put into words how much I enjoy your comedy style and videos, truly otherworldly
I've watched this video like 5 times and it's still one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Suddenly he was everywhere and people were like "hmmmmmmmm there SURE ARE A LOT OF ROB PLAYERS........"
edit: Also, for a specific moment, check out Zackray vs.
Hey guys! 👋 I'm trying to find an old animated film featuring two male friends, one tall one short, helping a fish-like child who is the son of the king of the sea, return to his father. The child has orange skin, fish scales, and black stripes along its back. The art style is reminiscent of Fujio F. Fujiko. Any leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! 🌊🐟 if you could also share this around that would also help, thank you.
Also, EXCUSE ME WHAT!!!: 8:18
This is such a witty and fun video while still analyzing Smash Bros. to a level that could easily have been tedious otherwise. I love it!
The section with the papers please music had me losing it by the end your pacing never ceases to amaze me
the mix of comedy and genuine teaching on display here is paralleled only by grayfruit's game and watch video, a new instant classic
Would love this serie for "bad" characters too (Ganon, Pit, DK, Dr Mario etc...) comparing their tools or their broken (in a bad way) moves to actual good characters
This gives me flashbacks of when i use to secondary rob and game and watch. I despise them so much but they were easy to get into. I learned from my mistakes and I decided to pursue fox and falco more.
I'd like to think I had some part in inspiring this video lmaooo, loved it though I'd definitely watch more of this format!!
Okay analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
hey whydo. you just convinced me to pick up rob as a secondary! nice job. keep it up man!
edit: i was in training mode & did a true 0 to death combo that killed at 50% with rob. he is now my secondary.
