- Cutting half of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s roster is a delicate process that dozens of creators have set out to accomplish. However, try as they might, all attempts seem to spark nothing but outrage. Today, we’re trying to cut the Smash Ultimate SO expertly and unbiasedly that everyone ends up satisfied! A feasible outcome, I’m sure.

Videos like this are why I'm convinced Smash Bros will never cut half of Ultimates roster. I could totally see 25 cuts max but everything else would be too severe.
The most likely cuts will be echoes, fighters that have been cut before (like Snake and Ice Climbers) and Fire Emblem characters.

That’s not entirely true, at least for earlier games. During Melee’s development, they were gonna replace Ness with the “at the time” Mother 3 protagonist but with Mother 3 being stuck in development hell, they just reincorporated Ness. Either way I can’t see fox leaving due to its impact on melees community and the use of the super fx chip allowing for early 3d rendering on consoles.

Keeping only gen 1 pokemon is most definitely not an authentic representation of the franchise. Pokemon has grown so much since gen 1 and keeping only characters from the first game(s) is ridiculous.

@@thishandleisntakenyethaha In general, the reason why characters are cut is because of workload. Realistically, even if pokemon trainer is one whole, it requires the work for three characters. Even ignoring the way that smash numbers them, you can just intuit that the one character slot takes up the work of three characters. That's why in Sm4sh, they removed Squirtle and Ivy, but kept Charizard.

the biggest problem with these videos isnt how correct or incorrect they are, is that there is no way they are cutting that many so every attempt is clearly wrong.
Eh, I feel like halving the roster would ultimately be a good decision that doesn't seem too out of left field especially since a good chunk of the fanbase expects it.

@@castform7 nobody on the fan base agree on who to cut tho, and most do that as a thought exercise, they dont really believe that many gonna be cut. smash never cut that many, and it just doesnt make sense to do that.
@@castform7it’s a double edged sword, the main appeal of Ultimate was the fact that nobody was getting cut. Halving the roster would be sure to alienate a lot of people and as someone who lost their main and wasn’t able to really mesh with another character until they were brought back as DLC, I can’t blame anyone for feeling betrayed if all the characters they enjoy playing are gone.
But shouldn't the sequel which assumingly is going to be a bigger game be able to contain all the characters from the previous game plus add more characters on top of that? So actually they shouldn't need to cut anyone right?

The pain in my chest I felt while watching this was immeasurable. Meta knight? META KNIGHT? Ive always believed that kirby needs MORE reps, but seeing him getting cut left a scar.

I automatically went, "no! My boy!" when he was cut. I get why Pit gets to stay, but that was that painful.
The thing is, I think it's more important that we focus more on the nintendo side of the roster than what people think about. I understand that guest characters are important and are what drive the hype for every new smash game, bur whenever someone makes one of these cut videos they always want to try to keep the biggest names like cloud, joker, or sora. I know their important for gaming as a whole and representing any franchise in smash is a big deal but I strongly believe keeping a lot these characters as one time inclusions would leave a better legacy for them, and would keep the roster feel fresh for any other potential inclusions for the next smash game.

I completely agree with that, in fact I think that some third party characters should be the first ones to go. Of course I do think a lot of them are amazing inclusion to smash, but especially with how many were introduced during the DLC, a lot of them feel really unspecial and that kills the whole point of having third party characters in the first place. Imo we should only keep the medium defining inclusion being Pac Man, Mega Man, Sonic, Ryu, Cloud and Steve. As much as I may love Snake or Joker and their respective games, I don't think they are as industry defining as just really good games, and they didn't really entered pop culture like the other did, and Kazuya and Hero may come from gendra defining franchises, but they themeselves are not really on the same footing.
I think it's just very telling to see the reaction to all of these characters reveal, though some of the may make "sense" on paper, the excitement behind the inclusion of Cloud is incomparable to the way people reacted to hero (which is by the way not even a character, doesn't help it to become iconic). I think that it's important to maintain the third party spots for really exciting characters rather than making them feel trivial.

@@artimist0315 I agree with all that; except your comment on "Steve." Metal Gear as a series did a LOT for the gaming industry. Steve prints money. He's on par with Spyro for Skylanders and the bird from angry birds. He's certainly a money maker, but not important as a whole. Snake and Kayzua are still more important and I would say the "SIMS" guy would be more important than Steve. Someone from the Lego franchise as well. I could very well play SMASH without Steve and be fine.

@@MasterMooper Putting aside that you probably seethe hard at any roster cut that doesn't completely remove Fire Emblem, cutting toon/young link and sephiroth is also in line with his rule to keep as many franchises as possible, and he eventually cut Byleth too. The only franchises to come out with more than 1 rep left are the ones that had more than one rep in smash 64, the only exceptions being Kirby because Dedede is a heavyweight, and Zelda, which still has 3 reps despite Toon Link being cut! Being mad he followed rules he set from the start is wild 💀

If I have one really big critique with your list,I personally feel you kept too many 3rd Party characters. yeah yeah I know Smash is considered this big celebration of gaming and what not, but at the end of the day it's still a Nintendo crossover game featuring guets.
And no matter what, all the 1st and even 2nd Party characters should get priority. I don't mean to say that you can't have any at all, but I do feel like a majority need to be booted.

@@icecontrol1 Ryu Joker Snake and Cloud have staying power off series popularity. Especially in Japan where it’s more important to be popular for a smash slot.
Ike is the most popular Fire Emblem character BY FAR, and he's treated as a huge deal in modern FE games like Awakening, Heroes, and Engage.
Greninja and Lucario got 1st and 2nd place in a recent official pokemon popularity poll. The former had also won another official poll prior and his home region, Kalos, is getting a new game next year, and the latter is pretty much a secondary mascot for the series and will get shoved into just about anywhere GF/TPC can put him in.
Another heavily popular character in her home series is Rosalina, and Mario can definitely afford 5 veterans in the next game even if it suffers heavy roster cuts.
Finally as a more personal opinion, I would like the next smash game to focus more on Nintendo characters again. Yes the guest characters are cool and hype but I feel that most are fine as a one time special event. I would keep no more than 7 of them for the next game, and we'll probably get more 3rd party newcomers anyways.
Still, always fun to see people's takes on what the next smash roster could look like :)
Yeah I agree, the 3rd party reps are hype as hell, but iirc Nintendo and Square Enix have had a tumultuous relationship as far as smash goes, and the core of smash has been Nintendo characters. I think the most interesting move might be to cut most if not all of the 3rd parties, and then add new 3rd parties in the Smash 6 DLC
The problem with those polls is that they have an extreme selection bias towards the kind of fans that are active in the online Pokemon community, and follow the series' every release very closely. If you want a look at what Pokemon are actually universally the most popular, you need to look towards what sells merchandise. Pikachu, the starters, Meowth, Snorlax, Gengar, Eevee, *and Mewtwo* make up the overwhelming majority of all Pokemon representation out in the real world. And the real world is being weighed in this ruleset.
I can almost buy the argument for Lucario, but he's certainly not a secondary mascot, not by a mile. Greninja certainly had some time in the sun, but its time as especially relevant to the series is over.
I kind of agree on Ike, and that he certainly should be prioritized over Byleth and Robin. But it would just be really awkward to not prioritize seniority when the only options left to cut are him and Marth. It's the reason why he didn't go for Isabelle over Villager.
As painful as it is, cutting third parties would make this a lot easier
about that Ike statement… other characters are also treated as huge deals. And heroes is a gacha game, practically almost every character has some amount of alts, such as corrin (mainly female I think), Ike, marth, edelgard, etc. having tons of them.
I won’t deny Ike is one of the most popular characters but saying “by far” is probably a little bit of an overstatement.

Really solid choices though, but personally I'd cut Ridley over Little Mac just because I've never liked how weirdly tiny Ridley is. This video must have been very painful to make, I salute you sir
I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt that way about Ridley. I remember watching the trailer thinking he looked weird from the jump, and seeing him standing next to Mario all awkwardly slouched up like that was almost comical to me. His amiibo’s pretty badass tho.

Sakurai was hesitant to add ridley for years because that would mean scaling him way down and limiting his ability to fly freely. Honestly he should have stuck to his guns and refused to add him instead of giving into peer pressure. Not every character is a good fit for smash no matter how iconic they may be

I was ALMOST about to admit this is the best "cut the roster in half" video, until you cut Pokemon Trainer. And then Diddy Kong. And then R.O.B. And then it just went downhill from there.
While ROB has a nice fanbase in smash his legacy is being one of the most useless accessories for the NES, the other 2 really hurt, banning all ?in1 automatically is not my favorite choice, and diddy... don't make it harder than it has to be.

@@snil4I’d argue ROB is a representation from Gaming Hardware/Accessories, which are a big part of Gaming. Plus, he’s the whole reason gaming is still even a thing, as he was Nintendo’s way of repopularizing it.
@@snil4 R.O.B. is way more than just representing Nintendo peripherals. He also represents Nintendo toys too, as he was marketed as one to literally save the video game industry. And it goes without saying that he not only represents the two games he plays with, but also the Subpace Emissary, which is cleverly shown in his series icon.
THAT'S why cutting R.O.B. would be a big deal, on top of having a nice fanbase. You'd be cutting out a big piece of Nintendo's history, a huge representative of Smash's own history, and just a fun, unique fighter in general. It's too bad most people don't see that, and all they see is "most useless accessory for the NES" when he's way more than that.

Kinda agree with you there aside from Marth he's probably the next best known fire emblem character. But if we were to only have 3 FE characters I think it would be how it originally was in the video Marth, Robin, and Byleth.

I'm 100% saying it, Puff and Yoshi are BLESSED by first twelve privellege in this list. You could make arguments for quite a few reps who got who could also be cut in favour of another one in smash, such as Ness and Lucas, but even he's now a (sort of) fan favourites and largely known because of smash, it wouldn't be the same without him, I feel even he's far less replaceable than Yosi and Jigglypuff. But seeing MEWTWO get cut before Puff, one of the most iconic Pokémon surpassed by the puff is wild. Pikachu, he's the icon of the franchise, he's almost as untouchable as Link or Mario.
Puff is like top 10 most recognizable pokemon so the orginal 12 really isn't the only reason puff should stay
@Mike-di3mo that's fair but when the Smash Bros roster does include: Charizard, Squirtle, Mewtwo and Pikachu, I think they can spare 1 of the other most recognisable pokemon slots, jigglypuff is probably the most expendable of them, but first twelve status saved em in this particular video. Also amazed the character I didn't get flack for being Yoshi, even if I do think if he was added in Melee and considered a Mario character, he woulda been thrown right out.
- Lucario has also had perfect attendance in Pokémon since Gen 4 & his popularity rivals that of the Gen 1 'Mons, with Greninja being the #1 Pokémon period. Your Pokémon picks in general are too Gen 1-heavy.
- Animal Crossing is big enough for both Villager & Isabelle to stay, and the latter is WAY too popular with the masses.
- Pyra/Mythra represents the best-selling entry of Xenoblade.
- In terms of coming down to the wire, wouldn't cutting Robin & having Lucina rep Awakening make more sense?
And yeah, I agree that they aren't cutting the roster in half. 50 characters (counting newcomers) is the absolute floor in my eyes, especially with Studio S seemingly developing Smash again alongside Sakurai for Smash 6 based on some job listings.

In the baby mode section, where echos and fighters weigh equally, Robin is a better pick than Lucina imo. Not only is he the main character / avatar you play as during the game, but his moveset is more unique than Lucina's and represents magic users in Fire Emblem. In the final roster Lucina is the better pick due to her status as an Echo meaning that she comes along free with Marth, and so sacrificing another slot to Fire Emblem isn't worth it.
While I can see the reason to keep Pyra Mythra, I do not see the reason over keeping Shulk, which is always the challenging thing with “who to keep vs who to cut”. They may be from the best selling entry, but ultimately Shulk ties into their game and series in a way they can't in reverse given coming after (barring changes retconned into Definitive Edition for cohesion, which don't directly include them).
You can also argue a bigger iconic factor with Shulk comparitive to Pyra and Mythra. While those two are huge outside of their own game, their Smash legacy is short, and the MC of their own game was cut, and they only made it in halfway through the final set of DLC. Meanwhile, Shulk immediately got a huge boost thanks to being in Smash (no part in fact to confirming the ESRB leak), and I want to personally argue that Shulk with the Monado 1 is way more iconic for the series as a whole.
When it comes down to it, I think Shulk is better and more known as “the face of Xenoblade”, and if you can only afford one slot, it's harder to argue for Pyra and Mythra over that. Let alone TWO slots, which Pyra and Mythra would take as 2 in 1 fighters
I think that in the version which includes echoes all the echoes of characters which were in the remaining roster were kept, so that roster did have Lucina as an awakening rep but not Robin (or Chrom)

People keep talking about there being no way the next Smash game actually makes cuts as drastic as this popular thought experiment, but my big theory for the announcement trailer of the next Smash game is it being "Nobody is Here" that essentially recreates the "Everyone is Here" trailer playing in reverse and the base roster of the game explicitly excluding any character that has been playable before in the franchise (until maybe some free DLC a while after the game's launch to bring back the staples anyway), focusing on making trophy characters, alternate versions of character not tied to the established moveset legacy, and other such examples playable instead.
I don't think a Smash game without Mario and friends is remotely feasible, "nobody is here" doesn't sound like the most profitable marketing strategy

Keeping Min Min and taking away Sephiroth just feels criminal. No way you actually believe that keeping Arms Franchise representation is better than keeping a second FF Franchise representative in the game, when I would argue there are and will always be way more FF fans than Arms. Additionally we know FF is here to stay, its been around for decades and has many reiterations loved worldwide, people grew up with the game and even to today they are still releasing FF7 remastered versions like Rebirth. Whereas Arms has 1 reiteration, only got a lukewarm reception and then quickly fell out, plus min min as a character itself is cheeks and there are more people that hate her character design than there are those who love her/main her. Sephiroth on the other hand as a character alone is hype, has the cool factor and is loved by many because of the story and lore behind him, now I've never seen people out there liking Min Min because of her story or lore. That's why I think your criteria is flawed, keeping characters based off franchise representation alone is not a good way to go about it, popularity as a character alone should be a variable that trumps any other argument. Just think about how many people grew up knowing Sephiroth as a character versus min min... That alone gives you the answer, Min Min gets scrapped because she is unpopular and Sephiroth stays because he is extremely popular. End of argument!
Because this video isn't about saying " I like this character more so he stays" realistically, a third party character who isn't even the first one to represent his franchise is not the most likely to stay at all, even if the character in question is one of the most popular ever.

This kind of video is more about what decisions it would make more sense to expect Nintendo to make. The only way I could see sephiroth being higher on the priority list is if arms does turn out to be a one time thing that they never use again, but I doubt she would be in the game in the first place if that was the case.

I can clearly tell that you are unfamiliar with Pokemon, as you break rule 2 with it. You kept Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Mewtwo while cutting Pichu, PT, Lucario, Greninja, and Incineroar. You kept 3 Gen 1 pokemon and nothing else. Mewtwo is cool and all, but he was cut before (twice if you wanna count Smash 4's base roster), so he isn't necessary for Smash's identity. As for who would replace him, it is down to Lucario and Greninja due to their popularity. Given that you cut the only other Ninja on the roster in Shiek, that is who I am leaning to.

YOU CAN'T CUT R.O.B! He's _iconic!_ Smash Bros. is one of the only reasons people even know he exists, and he was _very_ important for Nintendo's history. If not for R.O.B. Nintendo would have had a lot more struggle getting a foothold in the western gaming market. If Smash Bros. is about representing video game history, then R.O.B. has to stay, even if just for the novelty of it. I would say he's up there with Captain Falcon and Ness for being iconic characters remembered through Smash Bros. more than their games of origin.

I have an assumption that Echo Fighters actually do matter when it comes to cutting characters. They still take work to put in the game and had to be negotiated for. But since they were later inclusions, I expect they're a low priority for the team.
If anything you'd cut the Echo Fighters first and not replace them, but they could either come back as their own unique Fighter or they continue to be clones if there’s time to include them.
Still, I like your presentation and thought process. It's just impossible to judge which characters to cut until we hear anything about a new game.
_I would fight for Dr. Mario..._ In fact, I think there's NO REASON to cut him from the roster at all, for the simple fact that _he's a clone fighter._ He's easy as heck to implement because 90% of everything is reused from Mario. He's my favorite character (yeah laugh it up) and he wouldn't realistically be stealing anyone's spot on the roster. Echo Fighters and clones are basically extras.
Sure they could _technically_ just make him an alt costume, but then he would lose what makes him actually fun to play as. I don't care if he's considered one of the worst characters, he feels so satisfying to play as imo (aside from his lackluster recovery). He feels like a heavier version of Mario, and he hits _hard,_ which is why I like him.
If the next Smash Bros. had more customizability for stats and hitboxes, and gave every character custom moves like the Mii Fighters (like a better/more-original version of what they did in Smash 4) then I would be okay with it (so long as Mario has a Dr. Mario alt costume and custom moves to match).
Literally. I don't even get the hate for Dr Mario from people to begin with, even after Ultimate came out. But I like playing him more than base Mario because not only he deals more damage but because of his down special.
As cheesey as it sounds, when I tried Smash 64 and Melee for the first time, the one thing I realized is base Mario's down special, and that in Brawl, it was replaced with FLUDD, which absolutely sucks in my book. You can legit recover back on the stage by rapidly press the down special for a little air time and then do an up special.

Pokemon is a weird one because it's representation is... odd. There's four gen 1 pokemon, two gen 2, one gen 4, one gen 6 and one gen 7. Odd choices all around. It's missing gen 3 randomly and its gen 2 pick is just bad.
So when dealing with pokemon, there's 3 choices.
1-Smash Reps: Smash reps are weird, since it means Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Mewtwo are the picks, as shown in this video. This doesn't actually represent the games all that well, having only gen 1 pokemon and including JIgglypuff. I get people say 'original 12' but original 12 feels super strange to me when the roster gets cut this much. Like, Jigglypuff doesn't even really have the captain falcon legacy, and I'd argue Falco is more well known as a smash character than Puff. Puff is literally carried by Hungrybox as a smash character. Keeping Jigglypuff has very little merits outside 'original 12', so comes down to how you feel about that argument. I'm not super into it. Mewtwo is a more solid choice, where melee fans were able to get the whole world into such a frenzy over the (at the time) nobody Lucario taking over him that he got added as smash 4 dlc. He's not really a relevant pokemon pick if you're looking at just 3, but he's for sure the best smash pick.
2-Pokemon Games reps: When it comes to actually repping the games, the two obvious picks are Pikachu and pokemon trainer. Even if pokemon trainer is cut to just charizard, I'd argue he's more important than either Mewtwo or Jigglypuff. Pokemon trainer is a super important rep as it's YOU, is the only fighter that actually represents what Pokemon actually is. If this was about time, sure but if it's just the best of what we have, Pokemon trainer feels like a must for me. This leaves the third rep for Greninja or Lucario, both of which are incredibly popular NON-GEN 1 Pokemon, which the game would have to include. Both are used as often as popular and both are normally pioneers for the series. lucario was basically Ash's ace in the last anime season despite being from 4 gens prior. Greninja got his own form. If we could only have 3, I'd honestly assume it would just be a new pokemon (Tinkaton currently but who knows), but ignoring looking to the future my money is on Lucario simply because dude is everywhere. Pokken put him on the box art, pokemon unite has him as a base roster and he basically repped mega evolution in a gen where Charizard and Mewtwo got 2.
3-Popularity: Whoever is most popular. This again comes down to the same 4 after Pikachu, since it depends on who you personally think is more popular. Greninja got first on a poll released during his height of relevancy in the anime and games, so who knows if that's still the case. Charizard is every genwunners wet dream, which might be enough to be considered for smash since smash fans and pokemon fans aren't one to one. Lucario won't die, and will be the face of pokemon outside gen 1 for who knows how long. Mewtwo is the face of legendaries and what they represent.
I think all smash rosters have to acknowledge one of these three tennants when making the pokemon roster, or else they fall into the smash community trap of thinking Lucario is obscure furry bait, Greninja is the 'most popular pokemon' and Mewtwo and Jigglypuff are gods that everyone universally needs to be in the next game because we have proof that people would be upset.

I agree that you need more than one or two FE characters to represent FE properly, but my bigger problem with FE representation isn't the quantity, it's how bad a job Smash does in showcasing that franchise's identity.
...The problem is Smash isn't currently doing a good job of it with 8 characters. Robin (to showcase weapon degradation and magic), a sword user (Marth, sure), an axe user, and a spear user to represent the weapon triangle is I think the ideal way of showcasing Fire Emblem (So... Cut 6 of the current FE roster - Maybe 5, Byleth at least has moves for all sides of the triangle, and then add two new Fire Emblem characters for the other two corners of the weapon triangle)
Your pokemon cuts have three issues - You made it Gen 1 only (bad for franchise rep), you dropped the character(s) who actually represent how Pokemon plays (bad for franchise rep), and Incineroar is Smash's only grapple focused character, giving him a playstyle that's otherwise missing among Smash's roster (bad for the roster variety)
Alucard would be the better _Castlevania_ rep, signifying the transition from largely linear platforming games to lending it's name to half of the Metroidvania genre name, and might have allowed a more diverse moveset. Simon is the better _Castlevania as it pertains to Nintendo_ rep since his games were NES and SNES, and Alucard's game was PS1.
Great video. I just have one question. You mentioned needing to cut 7 more after putting the echoes back, but Chrom was cut regardless because of Roy already being cut, yet 7 unique characters were cut instead of 6. Why was that?
Lol it’s funny, I thought the same thing while writing until I realized my numbers didn’t add up.
Basically, Chrom was part of the 41 cuts in Baby Mode, and remained cut after the fact. But his contribution to that number was still revoked *in spite* of being cut. Just like the other echoes, he got shoved under the Roy umbrella, who was a character we already covered. That addition to the 41 belongs to Roy, not Chrom. So even though we only brought back six, all seven needed to be discounted.

1. I don’t think the original 12 should be automatically preserved. While it doesn’t matter for the most part because 11 of the 12 are just too important to cut, I seriously think Jigglypuff is not good representation for Pokémon. In your baby mode list, you had 3 gen 1 Pokémon, which is not good. You also underestimated Lucario’s importance, which is understandable. Basically, he’s a mascot for the series like Pikachu is, just not to the same extent. You get a free Lucario in X and Y, Ash gets one, he’s the star of one of the movies, many significant characters such as Volo and Cynthia get him. I can go into more detail, but he’s by far more important to the series than Jigglypuff is. Incineroar and Greninja both are too.
2. Even though I probably wouldve made the same cuts looking at your rules, I still don’t agree with the same logic when it came to the retro cuts. Mr Game and Watch basically represents an era before the retro era. He’s his own thing.
3. I feel like Min Min was a better choice for a cut than Robin, because Arms is a game and not a franchise. I guess you kind of addressed it, but idk, I think Awakening is too important of a game.
OG 12 stays. Without OG 12 smash wouldn't exist. Jigglypuff stays. And having just Gen 1 pokemon to represent pokemon is actually the best decision when the cuts are this cutthroat. Gen 1 is by far the best selling pokemon gen, by far the most iconic pokemon gen, and is what started pokemon and kickstarted it into becoming the most popular media franchise in the world. If any gen should be repping Pokemon, its Gen 1.
I'll give my opinion as quick as posible, we asume all chatacters keep their current playstyles. We go back to Melee's roster (we recombine shiek and Zelda), then we cut the clones(Pichu, Dr, ylink, falco) and Mewtwo. We then add Ike, Inkling, K. Rool, Dedede, Ridley(as a superheavy), Lucario and maybe Banjo. And then we have 5 slots for brand new chatacters. And finally, we re work ganondorf into something playable
On the topic of FE characters: each console is represented in the roster by the main fighters since all but the Wii U had a fire emblem game on it. Marth is here for the NES, SNES, and DS, Roy is here for the GBA games, Ike is here for the Gamecube, Robin is here for the 3DS, and Byleth is here for the Switch. By this logic, if the next console comes out and we get a new Fire Emblem and Smash game around the same time, we may get a new fighter to replace Corrin from Fire Emblem 18 in the roster since Corrin’s console is already represented by Robin.

It's always refreshing to see someone that ACTUALLY takes into account just how much Smash loses as a crossover game by cutting even a SINGLE franchise from it, I've seen far too many people say things like "easy cut Steve he's so broken!" That it infuriates me.
Entire stages, items, music and spirits get cut when you get rid of a franchise, it really isn't that easy.
That said, after "baby mode" I do think there were a few weird priorities like choosing to cut G&W and Little Mac while keeping Ridley and DeDeDe, or cutting the pokémon roster down to two, but other than that it was great!
I'd argue that keeping sheik is actually a better choice than keeping ganon because ganon is essentially an echo of falcon, and even if he's gotten more of his own identity over the years and realistically will never be cut cuz he's ganondorf, solely from a gameplay perspective I'd rather have a completely original character in sheik over ganondorf. Or they could make zelda and sheik the same character with down b again

As someone who has watched a good amount of these videos, I give you props for being as close to objective as possible. I genuinely believe most of this is very solid, believable, and well justified. That said, I have a few hangups.
For starters, I think the two characters that remain that I don't think should be are Joker and Terry. Now I adore Persona 5 (it's one of my favorite games ever and the series as a whole is one of my tops), but having Joker on the roster but cutting key Nintendo characters feels off. I know you want to maintain different franchise variety, but the variety also extends to the *types* of series. Persona is an RPG and Fatal Fury is a fighting game-both of which are already represented well on the roster (heck, even by the SSBU DLC with Hero and Kazuya). Nintendo is likely to prioritize its own popular characters than characters that, while really cool, weren't highly requested.
As such, it feels weird for Donkey Kong to have only himself when you just made a video talking about how the series is gearing up to really come back bigger than ever. Your inital "baby mode" cuts I 99% agreed with, but Diddy Kong being cut made no sense. And then cutting King K. Rool felt arbitrary when he was *very* highly requested. Like, sure, I guess the series already has a rep, and he wasn't *as* popular as Ridley and Banjo & Kazooie, but why does that matter? He was really popular, and him being a Nintendo character (which likely is far more important than a 3rd party) holds a lot of sway. I adore Wario, but you could've even cut him so Donkey Kong to have two to three reps. At the very least two.
My only other wrinkles are Pokémon only being repped by Gen 1, but I get it. Still, if I had a choice, Jigglypuff would by far be replaced by Mewtwo. Greninja and Pokémon Trainer, I'd make DLC.

The Belmont bloodline, on the other hand, is one of the most important concepts in Castlevania. They're the embodiment of good against the evil incarnate that is Dracula, and with a core theming of good against evil, it makes them vital. Castlevania fan here, your friend's sentiment towards Alucard is totally understandable, I'm also a bigger fan of the non linear Castlevanias (I'd love to have Soma Cruz in the roster) but he's also wrong: a Belmont character is the best way to represent the franchise as a whole since they're the most prominent character archtype (whip wielders) in the franchise and Simon being the one the IP started with and Richter bringing some of his animations and attacks to the shared moveset.
In terms of uniqueness Alucard has multiple weapons, spells, transformations, he'd definitely be unique but said elements are already present with other characters, but one thing he's not is a whip wielder, something only the Belmonts can bring.
I know you were trying to preserve franchises above all else but 17/41 of your keepers being third parties in this Nintendo fighting game definitely feels like a massive stretch. Out of all those third parties, I’m only expecting Sonic, Bayonetta, Mega Man, Ryu, Pac-Man, and maybe Banjo and probably Steve to make a reappearance, at least in the base game.

from my understanding those pokemon poll results that got greninja as "the most popular" are dubious. voting was segmented by regions and everyone was allowed to vote for a pokemon from each region. Kalos aka greninjas regions is well known for having by far the least amount of pokemon in it. So he was in significantly less competition for a vote than his other top tiers
I love the way you did this, most videos are insanely biased with things like, "But comparing Dr Mario to Marth.. I have to cut Marth". This really does feel like a perfectly objectively correct cut.
As much as I do appreciate how much thought went into this video, since you took a very objective approach on it! (which many don’t lol) But at the same time this is kinda why the roster getting cut in half would Never happen, there’s no way to do it without upsetting a LOT of people, and I’m pretty sure cutting the roster in half was a rumor too

they count as 1 slot in the game, but on the official smash website theyre counted as 3 separate characters, same as pyra/mythra. its probably just to get a larger sounding roster, but they are counted as unique characters

Yes they are needed. Fighting games is more than just SF and more than one traditional FG franchise should be represented. Tekken is arguably more popular than SF so Kazuya absolutely has to stay.
Whitout king of the fighters, tekken, mortal kombat along whit SF there would be no smash bros.

I'm surprised you kept Bayo. Her series just seems niche compared to the counterpart that is Devil may cry and how popular it is (Would so love Dante in it!) I do like her series though (never played Bayonetta 3 but hear it is mixed).
I wouldn't be surprised if Steve gets cut because of how difficult he was to make in the game to the point he breaks the game (From what I hear how players can abuse him)
Overall you had a good rule set for the cuts and the part where you cannot go back once these characters got added due to outrage is a fairly compelling argument for their continued inclusion.
Gotta disagree with the point on keeping Fire Emblem representation yet still cutting Ike and Lucina. While Marth is the first lord in the series, none of his four games are fondly remembered by most fans, and without his inclusion in Melee, there's a large chunk of FE fans who wouldn't even know he existed. Besides that, he has no real character to him, and the only personality they could give him in Smash was "noble sword guy".
Ike is from the popularly considered best FE game duology, and Lucina is a major character from the game which revived the franchise. Both have more established personalities, established alternative costumes in their games, and at least Ike has an established mercenary style of fighting which sets him apart from other swordies.
Sure rosalina (my fav) got cut but atleast you are right when you say best princess, WHICH SHE IS!

2 things I would change, ZERO bias/jokes.
1. Keep Lucas. He’s awesome and I’d probably die if he was completely axed outside Japan. Instead, cut Ness, he’s a ripoff of Lucas, somehow, even though he came first.
2. Add Link from Link: The Faces of Evil. I feel he’d be even a better addition than Young Link and Toon Link combined and would add some nice representation to the best LOZ game.
I'd replace GnW's cut with Sora getting cut. The whole "People wanted him in for years" shtick can only bring you so far. If we're talking fighter variety, Sora plays like another sword character but with zoning moves while at the least GnW as a much more varied arsenal.
Aside from that, most of these cuts are pretty understandable and make sense. Realistically, the next game will only cut like 20-30ish characters at most like you said, they aren't making a smash game with a starting roster smaller than 4's, that's for sure.
Then again Sora is the literal crossover character between Square and fucking Disney. His whole shtick is crossing over. I’d sooner get rid of Bayo or Joker, the latter is purely based on spite.
