You can’t have a deep / low voice in customer service because it gives off an impression of dominance and authority. A higher speaking tone is more childlike and hence comes across as more submissive which equates to politeness and cheerfulness.
The thing about your voice being different in different languages actually comes from when you become fluent and somewhat confident in speaking them: Different languages have different phonetic system and your voice adapts to them differently, at first when you're learning you're kind of imitating the language you're learning in the phonetic system of your language, but when you become fluent you eventually just stop doing that and your voice naturally changes since you're using a whole new phonetic system. For example, I speak Spanish, Portuguese and English fluently. My voice is deeper in Portuguese than in Spanish and deeper in Spanish than in English. So hearing me switch from portuguese to english sounds a bit jarring.
Sorry I'm really late commenting here but I feel kinda the same. I'm Brazilian and lived 1 year in UK few years ago, My voice is way higher in Portuguese (native) than it's in English. I though Neolatin languages used higher pitches because most people I know show higher pitch speaking Portuguese than speaking English/Norwegian (I know a few Portuguese -speaking Norwegian people) but your comment makes a lot of sense!
Agreed with most topics discussed, in my experience most Japanese guys are shy so they are not good in bed or kissing, but a lot of it is a lack of confidence and porn that teaches bottoms to be like a starfish and cry like they are being murdered. Its pretty boring having to do all the work. As with everything exceptions exist but I also think the way sex is portrayed here and in the Western world is different, in Japan I feel like sex is seen as a "my pleasure" thing so its pretty much about making urself feel good, in latin culture at least (where I come from) sex is about "our pleasure" so you are constantly trying to please your partner and they please you. This is the same with kissing, in Japan most guys are "being kissed" they are not "kissing" so its not fun.
I think the reason Japanese do not kiss, it’s because kissing is an intimate act whereas sex is really just sex. As for sex itself, I feel there’s a hint of master and slave. Hence , the slave is always submissive and the master takes charge. This is perceived to be more erotic than reciprocal sex. It’s just a cultural preference.

This is a weird reaction but I cried on the topic of ghosting and communication. I just ended a 6-month relationship with my Japanese boyfriend. He barely speaks English, and my Japanese is mediocre, to say the least, but we made it work during the initial months but I guess it became overwhelming for him. He said he's in a lot of stress just talking to me. And the fixed in me gave all possible options to fix the problem but he just ghosted me.
I feel that as a person who like can speak 4 languages ( all are not like frame grammatically sentences on my own and stuff, but I know how to spell and understand them), I can answer that language question to some extent. So, in my opinion, different languages have different ways of spelling words which opens and closes the vocal tract differently. Now for a language like Sanskrit, most work is done by vocal chords and a lot of vibration is felt in the abdomen area and the range of widening of the chords is different from that of a language like Telugu or Tamil and for a language like English a higher amount of vibration is felt near the nasopharyngeal region with a experienceable amount in the abdomen area. The feelings conveyed by the language also play a major role. Some languages have a heavy, rough, deep tone whereas some languages are as smooth as a flowing calm river. The masculine, feminine, neutral and null tinges in the language also have a affect on how our modulation depends on. Also, different major factors like confidence (as Andrew said), the amount of experience or attachment you have with the language, the intent for its use, etc also play a major role in the tonal shift.

I totally feel what you guys brought up about ghosting!! What pisses me off though is that I had a Japanese guy ghost me after like 5 months of hooking up. He was supposed to spend the night at my place one weekend, but a coworker of mine got COVID so I told him we should hold off in case I was exposed to it. He said that's fine and we could meet up the next weekend. That was December 2020, and I haven't heard from the fucker since. Not that I'm bitter or anything... haha
Same thing happened to me a couple of times... If it's a one night thing it doesn't hurt but when you've been meeting over a long period of time I think it would at least be nice to be given a "sorry we can't meet anymore because xyz"
I kind of put it on the same level as if a regular Bootycall tells me that they or a friend/ Bootycall buddy tested positive for an STD. I know later on they are clean. But it is in the back of my mind, they are either "damaged good" or doing stuff that will get me infected. I know it's irrational. But if it is a new buddy who told me, I would probably ghost them as well as I now have to abstain for 2 weeks to make sure I didn't get anything or even worse, if they tell me at a later date, I have to tell my buddies I have fooled around with. A pain to avoid.

My thoughts on kissing are that A: in my experience it’s like a 50/50 chance in the US on whether a guy is a good kisser and B: I think if a guy doesn’t learn how to kiss in his teens/early 20s I don’t think he’ll ever be a good kisser. Kissing is about adapting to the person you’re with, and if that’s not a skill you acquire when you’re young and malleable I think people get stuck with bad habits.
I’ve been with guys who clearly had no experience making out when they were younger so they just don’t use their tongue at all or aren’t passionate enough, and like, I can try and take the lead all I want but they’re too afraid to follow. I’ve also had guys who are WAY too aggressive, like they only ever kissed one person and were like “oh this is what kissing is” and even when I showed him how swollen he was making my lip he wouldn’t adjust his intensity. My advice? Kiss a lot of people while you’re young and learn to adjust, because the older you get the harder it will be (I say, as a geriatric 24 year old)
Lovely video guys! I particularly enjoyed the talk on customer service. I have worked in customer services and I was taught to always have a smile or cheery demeanour. In the UK, I find people tend to have a “phone voice” when talking to customers, which is a bit more cheery or softer spoken than when in normal conversation.
You guys are so right, I had a great time in nichome but I wish more Japanese men talked to me - I feel like a lot were too shy since I’m a tall white guy. Hopefully next time I visit!
The 'ghosting' thing happens a lot in the UK, too. You just find a guy you would like to see again, get together once, and then they block! I think a lot of men just want the gratification of a one-night-stand and then it's 'off to sow more wild oats elsewhere.' It's a shame, because with no expectation of a full on relationship, it would be great to have a friend with benefits when you find a sexy guy with a great touch.

Great topics Guys. I believe that an individual's history/experience/demographic also "color" perceptions of personal interaction. A character trait I might find off-putting in one individual, may not seem so bothersome in another. Also, a consideration might be given to "projection" of a person's quirks. If I am very positive about an outcome in a relationship/hookup, I have already "projected" enough positivity into the situation that may make me ignore some attributes that ordinarily I may feel uncomfortable with. Human interactions are often wonderfully messy, but, it's what we have. Even in the USA, there are sometimes dramatically different (regional and local) interests and ways of presenting yourself to others in the Gay community that make new environments exciting or unlikable. As a Japanese gay person, It's a little hard to say, but as you say, many Japanese don't want to go out with foreigners... maybe... Andrew has a point on Japanese men not being the best kissers. They always felt a bit stiff and uptight to me. I always thought it was a combination of their over-shyness and a lack of confidence as well. Perhaps there are confident gay Japanese men (from Japan) but I have not met one yet. Then again, the Japanese men I am meeting that are from Japan are here in the states on my home territory and they probably do not have a lot of experience with foreigners (in Japan). So when they come to the states and all of a sudden just about every man is a foreigner to them, I guess that can be intimidating and cause confidence issues. Meng was right about American customer service representatives speaking in high voices as well. I think the difference between Japan and the U.S. is that the chances are good that the Japanese representative honestly wants to help where the U.S. representative 100% wants nothing to do with the person they are talking too and their cheerful demeanor is fake, fake, fake. Same thing happened to me a couple of times... If it's a one night thing it doesn't hurt but when you've been meeting over a long period of time I think it would at least be nice to be given a "sorry we can't meet anymore because xyz"
I kind of put it on the same level as if a regular Bootycall tells me that they or a friend/ Bootycall buddy tested positive for an STD. I know later on they are clean. But it is in the back of my mind, they are either "damaged good" or doing stuff that will get me infected. I know it's irrational. But if it is a new buddy who told me, I would probably ghost them as well as I now have to abstain for 2 weeks to make sure I didn't get anything or even worse, if they tell me at a later date, I have to tell my buddies I have fooled around with. A pain to avoid.

My thoughts on kissing are that A: in my experience it’s like a 50/50 chance in the US on whether a guy is a good kisser and B: I think if a guy doesn’t learn how to kiss in his teens/early 20s I don’t think he’ll ever be a good kisser. Kissing is about adapting to the person you’re with, and if that’s not a skill you acquire when you’re young and malleable I think people get stuck with bad habits.

I’ve been with guys who clearly had no experience making out when they were younger so they just don’t use their tongue at all or aren’t passionate enough, and like, I can try and take the lead all I want but they’re too afraid to follow. I’ve also had guys who are WAY too aggressive, like they only ever kissed one person and were like “oh this is what kissing is” and even when I showed him how swollen he was making my lip he wouldn’t adjust his intensity. My advice? Kiss a lot of people while you’re young and learn to adjust, because the older you get the harder it will be (I say, as a geriatric 24 year old)

Lovely video guys! I particularly enjoyed the talk on customer service. I have worked in customer services and I was taught to always have a smile or cheery demeanour.
In the UK, I find people tend to have a “phone voice” when talking to customers, which is a bit more cheery or softer spoken than when in normal conversation.

The 'ghosting' thing happens a lot in the UK, too. You just find a guy you would like to see again, get together once, and then they block! I think a lot of men just want the gratification of a one-night-stand and then it's 'off to sow more wild oats elsewhere.' It's a shame, because with no expectation of a full on relationship, it would be great to have a friend with benefits when you find a sexy guy with a great touch.

Great topics Guys. I believe that an individual's history/experience/demographic also "color" perceptions of personal interaction. A character trait I might find off-putting in one individual, may not seem so bothersome in another. Also, a consideration might be given to "projection" of a person's quirks. If I am very positive about an outcome in a relationship/hookup, I have already "projected" enough positivity into the situation that may make me ignore some attributes that ordinarily I may feel uncomfortable with. Human interactions are often wonderfully messy, but, it's what we have. Even in the USA, there are sometimes dramatically different (regional and local) interests and ways of presenting yourself to others in the Gay community that make new environments exciting or unlikable. In this day and age where concent is literally everything Americans can learn a thing or 2 from the Japanese way of doing things, because let's face it nobody wants to be on the wrong end of a "me too". Now i would probably knowing this is a thing would say i am saying yes to you and everything you want to do to me up front, don't ask onegaishimasu just do. (However that would translate?) There is a rank-like stage in romance, and it's shaped like a pyramid. People downstairs can't date the person at the top. Because around top people don't answer these people so these people can be associated with the similar people. These "ranks" are in every country.
As a Japanese gay person, It's a little hard to say, but as you say, many Japanese don't want to go out with foreigners... maybe... Since the "under" Japanese are approached by other Japanese, they tend to associate with other (also) non-popular Japanese. Because that's the only way they can. This is the same as in the gay world.
Foreigners always seem to be dating unattractive Japanese people (for Japanese) who have no experience and are rejected by other Japanese in romance. Therefore, I think that many foreigners talk about their experiences with "these" Japanese people who have become inexperienced transparent people.
Of course, there is no lank in humans. But in romance, there is. I think this is the truth. I saw racist comments by foreigners that is being spoken we're all same, but like I said, Japanese who are associated with foreigners are usually non-popular people here. I'm sorry, but that's the truth.

Andrew has a point on Japanese men not being the best kissers. They always felt a bit stiff and uptight to me. I always thought it was a combination of their over-shyness and a lack of confidence as well. Perhaps there are confident gay Japanese men (from Japan) but I have not met one yet. Then again, the Japanese men I am meeting that are from Japan are here in the states on my home territory and they probably do not have a lot of experience with foreigners (in Japan). So when they come to the states and all of a sudden just about every man is a foreigner to them, I guess that can be intimidating and cause confidence issues. Meng was right about American customer service representatives speaking in high voices as well. I think the difference between Japan and the U.S. is that the chances are good that the Japanese representative honestly wants to help where the U.S. representative 100% wants nothing to do with the person they are talking too and their cheerful demeanor is fake, fake, fake. The whole time they are talking to a person they are wishing that that person would instantly die. So much for customer service in the states.

I found this interesting and seems like a fun place to visit. The only thing is I don’t drink alcohol so I don’t think I will be very welcome lol. I agree about the higher pitch Americans do it also. It must be hard trying to figure out who likes you when everyone is so polite all the time. I was raised to be polite so I understand it and I also have a hard time hurting someone's feelings. The younger me has even had sex with someone I didn’t want to be with just to be nice. I wouldn’t do that now it doesn’t leave you feeling great about yourself when you do have sex with someone you don’t like. I wouldn’t have thought of those guys as being gay just looking at them. They both seem very nice people.

I have heard the high-pitched customer service voice in Asian TV shows and when I visited Thailand, but I thought that was just their natural speaking voice. 😃 Meng is right though that we have our version of that too in North America.
