Having never been to Japan this is a really good insight into people’s preferences there. I guess it’s no different to anywhere else to a certain degree. I think people want to have options in a relationship, to be able to care of someone while at the same time have the opportunity for someone to take care of them (inside and outside of the bedroom 😉). Loved the survey though and I hope Don will do a followup maybe 4-6 months later to see how opinions changed/evolved. Everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community knows how difficult it is to find someone and when they do it’s such a huge relief. So don’t give up guys. Someone’s out there for everyone :)
I'm surprised that the major body type the ppl are looking for is not the slender type. You don't see many buff or bigger men in most of the Japanese Media. 🤔
@anton birkholz, yeah, that is why we guessed low initially, but I guess as we talked about later on, straight (as seen in media) depictions of ideal types are different from those in the scene (gogo boys), so maybe that influences people in different ways.

You approached it viewing tops as the biggest category but all 3 categories were less than 2% apart, it was very even. AND THEN when you consider everyone other than total tops, total bottoms and No Anal are open to partners that switch it up occasionally that's 5/8 cetegories that don't stick strictly to one role, so of course, vers will be the most popular.
I was a total top until I got married... my husband wants us to stay monogamous (which is fine with me). Over time, you do start to try new things and switch it up, so now I would probably label myself as vers. Feeling comfortable and safe with my partner is what made me feel okay with trying out bottoming. Thanks for this episode! It was pretty informative! I am over 50yrs, originally was pure Top. Then went vers, but due to health reasons my Testosterone went very low I have become pure Bottom now, and loving it (Think of England). 😁
I like to think that people are just getting over having roles like strict top and strict bottom and care more about having a connection with someone that is also open to have fun and varied sex.

The question about what role is preferable in a partner by a top , and the answer being verse is due to tops wanting to feel that they are more “toppy” if the can convince a vers person bottom. And bottoms know this and sometimes say they are vers for that reason. Your survey indicate that most men like men who look and behave like men, top or bottom and I concur.
For channels that have duos, Im usually not a fan of guests cause it disrupts the dynamic, but I think you guys have such good chemistry with all of your guests!
As a top myself I was rather hoping most people would be bottoms… though I think Andrew had a point in saying older people tend to be more toppy, meaning there probably is a higher percentage of bottoms in the younger population (at least I hope). It would be interesting to see those percentages broken down by age group.
In my experience, as we get older, we might experiment more with sexual position roles (ie. Someone who was a total top in their youth might explore bottoming more often and vice versa.) as a way to broaden sexual horizons and keep sex interesting. Also as you get older you may know yourself more and become more comfortable expressing other sides of yourself sexually.

But after coming out and started to embrace yourself for being gay. There is still some expectation for you to being masc. Because people prefer masculine behavior and body types in gay community. This reiterates my pain living in Tokyo haha. I am not heavy, neither am I into heavy guys, I have very little to 0 body hair and I prefer the same for my partner, I have a normal-athletic body type and also prefer the same for my partner, well basically the guys I've been with are all bisexuals because it's been the same loop of "I'm attracted to you but you're into heavy guys or something" or "you're into me but I really don't feel anything for you". And this is just the superficial physical aspect of things so to top it off with their character and personality, etc. I'm basically dried out lollll Also...vers exists? I don't know why there is a huge denial thinking vers:bottoms or Vers bottom:bottom. It's like the whole bi-shaming thing and I really don't think we need that. Like there can be a masculine bottom or feminine top and you know it's all fluid and shouldn't matter. You should be the judge of what you prefer and I don't think anyone can speak for you.
Yes, agreed, there are a variety of presentations and identities in the community that break common ideas of labels. We talk a bit about this in another video where we talk about feminine tops.
I’m really curious about this too. I’ve heard that it’s quite common amongst Japanese, both gay and straight, not to use protection. So I wonder if that’s true; and what are the most common STIs among gay men in Japan, etc. Really curious about this topic. It would also be interesting to see the sexual habits/practices of gay Japanese men: what age did they lose their virginity; how often do they have sex; number of sexual partners, etc.

Actually I agree with the servy. As primarilly top. Even time I want to get some versa action there to many bottoms, with most I end up being the top. Also with my bf (open rl) he is mostly bottom. Even if we both are bi, he can only top females. So as a top, actually most tops would look for a vera, cause when a versa tops it does not requere them a lot of effort to do it (or me to guide them, which can put me out of the bottoming zone). Plus with actual experience bottoming, the comunication will be easier since there is some base mutual understanding. Contrary to only tops, who often are not that good at all or have any understanding for the bottoming partner. Every top or bottom has to have some experience with the other role to be good in their role and able to effectively communicate. As for the body size it is an Asian think (all of asia heavy guys have there atraction), while in Europe thin is the second most prefered body tipe after muscled.

This video has given me the opportunity to say something that I have been thinking about since I started watching BL’s. I suspect that the reason so many BLs present stereotypical couples where one is tall or masculine and the other has feminine features, thin, small, slight, etc, the reason is because many of these BLs are made by straight directors and producers!!! This is what straight males are comfortable with - maintaining the appearance of the male/female dichotomy. I believe even the majority of straight females who love BLs would rather see two typical masculine males in these roles. I don’t have anything against any body type. I’m just speaking from the genre point of view.

I think that the primary reason for men looking for head hair replacement ( places like Hair Club) is because of their women. I don't think gay men - in general -- are so into that. Gay men tend to focus on the body, the face and of course, the phallus to varying extents. Myself personally, I don't tend to favor LONG hair on men. I'm NOT into the whole Fabio look that SO MANY women seem to be into. I AM partial to facial and chest hair. (It did take me a minute to get used to BACK hair, I'll concede). Also more than ANYTHING I have to like the man's face - no matter what his body looks like. I find a lot of chubby guys very attractive in addition to gym wrought bodies. Interestingly, I can better tolerate long hair if the man ALSO has facial hair. I guess my ideal type would be a muscle bear type!! I love this channel. When I was younger I was more vers, but currently I'm a top, and I LOVE a bottom. I'm just not interested in bottoming anymore. We as queer men are so toxic when it comes to looks 🤣. And I am sure that people saying they didnt ignore someone because of body weight are probably lying lol. And everyone does it, as long as you are not rude or mean its ok. I also think most people are vers in some way. I find that usually tops tend to say most men they meet are also tops (like me, lots of cute guys I meet end up being tops) and then bottoms claim everyone is a bottom. PS: As someone who mostly only tops, truly, bottoms who eat ass are the best. And it is true, I find that having a bottom who is not afraid to top you once in a while is what I would prefer, because we all like options!

my mind went: total top total bottom top bottom verse top verse bottom verse verse no anal no anal, so if most participants identified as top, then bottom should be picked. So verse as the most selected one didn't make sense. and other than total top, total bottom and no anal, other options are all switchable, not only verse. it is just the matter of how often

In my experience I feel like that sentiment that 'everyone around me is a bottom' and 'tops are unicorns' is a very common shared feeling amongst people everywhere that I've been to. Maybe the plot twist is that tops exist, but they're all (or mostly) taken? And if so, they're married to vers guys, so they can enjoy something different every once in a while. I don't know, maybe I'm just reading into it a little too much, I'm just looking for explanations because I'm on the other side of the world and we have the exact same perception over here.
I think that we reached a point where being bottom is not such a stigma anymore and more ppl are coming out with it. And maybe tops having it easier to match with someone. 🤔 Maybe we aren't balanced out enough actually.

(And this mainly applies to the US as I've never been to JP) I find myself watching scenarios, where Most bootms are chasing after specific types, and it's all the same type. The way Meng was so disappointed by the results was hilarious. I identify as a Versatile Switch...just to one up the survey...and it's simply because I don't see any reason to restrict my options for fun... within reason...I definitely do have preferences when it comes to either role...and for me to bottom...it is a bit of a competition to see who is bigger, as I already am above average in that department...and thanks to my High School years of walking home with a 35 pound backpack every day for four years...I have enough back there, that a simple average might not work well...I actually look more like a person who didn't know much beyond leg day.🤣 Though lately I have rectified the upper body issue...my muscles are much more dense than usual though, so while I look about 50 pounds lighter than I am...I definitely don't weigh close to that...I got strength, but not show...and that leads back to the competition...not a show off when not interested in more ways than one.😏😂 When it comes to preferences...I don't particularly like my own body type, & as I want to reduce the fluff some more...I would prefer a guy who is closer to my ideal body type...but I don't mind lithe guys...so long as it's purely their genetics and not the results of unhealthy habits...like smoking...or other things...

The truth of the matter is that most gays end up being versatile. Especially if they’re in a relationship we take turns as tops or bottoms. Especially among the 30 and older crowd. Sure, when we’re all in our teens and 20’s most of us can be uncompromising bottoms but that definitely changes later in life.
As a top I agree with Don, I want a verse bottom. I usually wanna top but there are some days every now and then where I wanna explore and switch it up. From my experience I feel like with strict bottoms comes negative or messed up ideas of masculinity and sexuality and it kinda just feels a little toxic or constantly on edge or pressure of not always being “manly” enough. but I do prefer topping 95% of the time but sometimes I wanna experiment and try things out 🤷♂️

This reiterates my pain living in Tokyo haha. I am not heavy, neither am I into heavy guys, I have very little to 0 body hair and I prefer the same for my partner, I have a normal-athletic body type and also prefer the same for my partner, well basically the guys I've been with are all bisexuals because it's been the same loop of "I'm attracted to you but you're into heavy guys or something" or "you're into me but I really don't feel anything for you". And this is just the superficial physical aspect of things so to top it off with their character and personality, etc. I'm basically dried out lollll

Like there can be a masculine bottom or feminine top and you know it's all fluid and shouldn't matter. You should be the judge of what you prefer and I don't think anyone can speak for you.
Yes, agreed, there are a variety of presentations and identities in the community that break common ideas of labels. We talk a bit about this in another video where we talk about feminine tops.

It would also be interesting to see the sexual habits/practices of gay Japanese men: what age did they lose their virginity; how often do they have sex; number of sexual partners, etc.

Actually I agree with the servy. As primarilly top. Even time I want to get some versa action there to many bottoms, with most I end up being the top. Also with my bf (open rl) he is mostly bottom. Even if we both are bi, he can only top females.
So as a top, actually most tops would look for a vera, cause when a versa tops it does not requere them a lot of effort to do it (or me to guide them, which can put me out of the bottoming zone). Plus with actual experience bottoming, the comunication will be easier since there is some base mutual understanding.
Contrary to only tops, who often are not that good at all or have any understanding for the bottoming partner.
Every top or bottom has to have some experience with the other role to be good in their role and able to effectively communicate.
As for the body size it is an Asian think (all of asia heavy guys have there atraction), while in Europe thin is the second most prefered body tipe after muscled.

This video has given me the opportunity to say something that I have been thinking about since I started watching BL’s. I suspect that the reason so many BLs present stereotypical couples where one is tall or masculine and the other has feminine features, thin, small, slight, etc, the reason is because many of these BLs are made by straight directors and producers!!! This is what straight males are comfortable with - maintaining the appearance of the male/female dichotomy. I believe even the majority of straight females who love

I think that the primary reason for men looking for head hair replacement ( places like Hair Club) is because of their women. I don't think gay men - in general -- are so into that. Gay men tend to focus on the body, the face and of course, the phallus to varying extents. Myself personally, I don't tend to favor LONG hair on men. I'm NOT into the whole Fabio look that SO MANY women seem to be into. I AM partial to facial and chest hair. (It did take me a minute to get used to BACK hair, I'll concede). Also more than ANYTHING I have to like the man's face - no matter what his body looks like. I find a lot of chubby guys very attractive in addition to gym wrought bodies. Interestingly, I can better tolerate long hair if the man ALSO has facial hair. I guess my ideal type would be a muscle bear type!! I've seen this muscle bear anime out of Japan which I always found intrigung. I also find the BALD bearded look really HOT!! Are you listening Don Cortez??......;-)

I love this channel. When I was younger I was more vers, but currently I'm a top, and I LOVE a bottom. I'm just not interested in bottoming anymore. If someone I loved wanted to top I wouldn't have any problem switching it up, if it was a hook up it wouldn't interest me. I like being the provider in and out of the bedroom, it's just what I like.

We as queer men are so toxic when it comes to looks 🤣. And I am sure that people saying they didnt ignore someone because of body weight are probably lying lol. And everyone does it, as long as you are not rude or mean its ok. I also think most people are vers in some way. I find that usually tops tend to say most men they meet are also tops (like me, lots of cute guys I meet end up being tops) and then bottoms claim everyone is a bottom.
PS: As someone who mostly only tops, truly, bottoms who eat ass are the best. And it is true, I find that having a bottom who is not afraid to top you once in a while is what I would prefer, because we all like options!

I don't get why you were so confused by the verse thing it makes sense. You approached it viewing tops as the biggest category but all 3 categories were less than 2% apart, it was even. AND THEN when you consider everyone other than total tops, total bottoms and No Anal are open to partners that switch it up that's 5/8 cetegories that don't stick strictly to one role, so of course, vers will be the most popular.
my mind went:
total top total bottom
top bottom
verse top verse bottom
verse verse
no anal no anal,
so if most participants identified as top, then bottom should be picked. So verse as the most selected one didn't make sense. and other than total top, total bottom and no anal, other options are all switchable, not only verse. it is just the matter of how often

In my experience I feel like that sentiment that 'everyone around me is a bottom' and 'tops are unicorns' is a very common shared feeling amongst people everywhere that I've been to. Maybe the plot twist is that tops exist, but they're all (or mostly) taken? And if so, they're married to vers guys, so they can enjoy something different every once in a while. I don't know, maybe I'm just reading into it a little too much, I'm just looking for explanations because I'm on the other side of the world and we have the exact same perception over here.
I think that we reached a point where being bottom is not such a stigma anymore and more ppl are coming out with it. And maybe tops having it easier to match with someone. 🤔 Maybe we aren't balanced out enough actually.
A friend said to me recently that maybe we just have this idea of bottoms everywhere because tops don't talk about themselves much hahaha

really interesting video!! i dont live in japan however i did visit there for a month and plant to go again! im pretty surprised bc i found people to be pretty black and white about their preferences and im more of a verse slightly top leaning (altho no one believes me probably bc i dont appear to their hyper masc stereotypes??!) that can keep ur dating pool pretty open however the survey is kinda making some points bc i do LIKE dating other verses simply for the options of explorations? so i think i really get that survey

I identify as a Versatile Switch...just to one up the survey...and it's simply because I don't see any reason to restrict my options for fun... within reason...I definitely do have preferences when it comes to either role...and for me to bottom...it is a bit of a competition to see who is bigger, as I already am above average in that department...and thanks to my High School years of walking home with a 35 pound backpack every day for four years...I have enough back there, that a simple average might not work well...I actually look more like a person who didn't know much beyond leg day.🤣
Though lately I have rectified the upper body issue...my muscles are much more dense than usual though, so while I look about 50 pounds lighter than I am...I definitely don't weigh close to that...I got strength, but not show...and that leads back to the competition...not a show off when not interested in more ways than one.😏😂
When it comes to preferences...I don't particularly like my own body type, & as I want to reduce the fluff some more...I would prefer a guy who is closer to my ideal body type...but I don't mind lithe guys...so long as it's purely their genetics and not the results of unhealthy habits...like smoking...or other things...
Being versatile does seem very useful as you wouldn't be limited yourself to a role and thus perhaps a certain type of person!

The truth of the matter is that most gays end up being versatile. Especially if they’re in a relationship we take turns as tops or bottoms. Especially among the 30 and older crowd. Sure, when we’re all in our teens and 20’s most of us can be uncompromising bottoms but that definitely changes later in life.
As a top I agree with Don, I want a verse bottom. I usually wanna top but there are some days every now and then where I wanna explore and switch it up. From my experience I feel like with strict bottoms comes negative or messed up ideas of masculinity and sexuality and it kinda just feels a little toxic or constantly on edge or pressure of not always being “manly” enough. but I do prefer topping 95% of the time but sometimes I wanna experiment and try things out 🤷♂️
