In Singapore, we call sweet potato 番薯 (fan shu). I think it might be a Cantonese influence
In Taiwan it's also 蕃薯。 And bicycle is 腳踏車. Otherwise similar to southern China
Differences in dialect and pronunciation between north and south are so interesting. We have the same in the UK but I don’t think the differences are as vast as in mandarin. I know the south is more linguistically diverse (correct me if I’m wrong), but personally I find the northern accent more eloquent.
You're right, most dialects in the south are mutually unintelligible while most dialects in the north could be easily understood.
i would say that it's not necessarily the case. the dialects spoken by the citizens of major cities of the north are typically mutually intelligible, BUT, once you go 10 km past the downtown core, you wouldn't even be able to understand half of what's being spoken in the villages, no matter where you are (except probably beijing, hebei, and northeastern china).
xi'an for example, has three variants of the guanzhong dialect within the muslim quarters alone. an area of around 5 km2.
In Cantonese, almost all the items displayed here are called something entirely differently. About the only things that are same with the other two dialects are the words for grandma and grandpa (maternal or paternal side).
在山东鲁南地区，土豆叫地蛋，红薯叫地瓜（地里长得一般都会加个地字），玉米叫麻缨，香菜叫芫荽（居然和广东一样），花菜叫菜花。

One thing to note about Coriander! Only the seeds of the plant are called Coriander, the leaves are called "Cilantro". British people might call the whole plant Coriander but it's usually that the leaves are called Cilantro (with an s sound).
01:16 Oh I absolutely LOVE these shredded potatoes. In Xi'an (where I lived 7 years) we called them 炒土豆丝 (Chǎo tǔdòu sī). It's one of my favorite side dishes. 🥰🥰🥰

What this video has taught me: as a cantonese person who barely speaks cantonese as it is, let alone mandarin, I would not survive outside of HK or Guangdong as apparently all the vocabulary are different 😆
Lol they're just mentioning items and some food. You should be fine, just take a Mandarin course for a year.

that's funny, but in Harbin everyone called thermos as a 杯子. that was kinda weird cause I used to think that there is no a word "thermos" in Chinese :D
Yansui is also used in many parts of northern China.

Hey Jessie, do you have any recommendations for a curriculum, app, set of books, etc. that would get an English speaker with no experience started learning Chinese? I recently meet a couple from Fujian who opened up a ramen shop in my town and would really like to be able to have conversations with them. I am not sure if they are primarily Fuzhou dialect (haven't asked them yet). Is it customary for a people in a region to know both Mandarin and the local dialect?
Ike, I recommend the Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1 book. People from Fuzhou will likely know Fuzhounese and Mandarin.
Which cities are northern and which cities are southern in China? I always heard people talk about north vs south but they never explained which cities are north or south. 😅
I mean Beijing accent also exists in northern Xijiang because of immigrants,see UFC Lijingliang speaking if you really want to know Xijiang accent.

You mentioned you used ‘ma ling shu’ for potato more often when you spoke in dialect. Since ma ling shu is still Mandarin, how was it pronounced in your dialect?
she said she was from yichun，jiangxi. in yichun it is something similar to “ma lin syu” （syu is the same pronounciation as in cantonese，but tones are different）
Oh yeah Xinjiang, I have heard about that autonomous province in China before on the news, but ehm well.... let us just not talk about it...... (don't wont her to get in trouble).
When I first saw the Titel, I thought, that she was going to talk about Manchuria and their distinct dialect of Mandarin, because of the ethnic Manchus etc.
that's not really the reason and the chinese politics you hear about on the news from western sources....take them with a grain of salt. manchus have their own language and the accent is not necessarily caused by manchu language.
Do a difference in height. Well in my experience the Chinese from the south really aren't that short, because a majority of Chinese Americans are from southern provinces of China and their younger generation is about the same in average height as white Americans. The senior citizen aged Chinese Americans however are noticeably shorter on average then white Americans. These Chinese from their northern provinces on the other hand make white Americans look short on average is my experience as a white American man in the USA when I see these Chinese tourists vacationing or on a business trip in the USA. Seems like most Chinese men from these regions of China are 180 cm or taller with 185 cm looking very average and not tall. 185 cm is tall for a white American men. 175 cm for white Americans is the average height for men and 163 is the average height for white American women which is what it looks like for young adult Chinese Americans, who are largely from southern China and I am guessing that is the average in most southern Chinese provinces as well for young adults and maybe 5 cm shorter then this when including their senior citizen aged population. Overall southern Chinese aren't that short it just that these northern Chinese are mostly on average tall and even making white Americans look short on average as well. The shortest Asian population that I see in the USA are the Cambodians with most men under 175 cm with most senior citizen aged men under 165 cm. Plus their skin color is so dark and very comparable to alot of Africans. They really look alot different the the Chinese population, especially compared to the Chinese in their northern provinces in height, skin color and bone structure.
