My mom is from Beijing and my dad was from Shanghai. I was born and raised in Spain until 11 but have now lived in the US for over 20 yrs. This video really sums up the way I learned Chinese throughout my childhood. I split time visiting family in Beijing and Shanghai and really feel like I'm one with both North and South. =D

Just watch for fun! I am not going to change to those northern terms when I speak Mandarin, I will always eat "Wan ton Noodles" instead of "Hoon Tun Noodles"
My mom is from Beijing but after watching this video, I've realized that she really likes the southern way of pronouncing things and uses those words just as much as the northern phrases. I was born in Canada so my Chinese isn't very strong and I was never really familiar with the differences between southern and northern Chinese, so I never understood why our family friends would say my mom sounded like a southerner. My dad (who is also from Beijing) would say that too. Now I get it lol.
My family is from the Northeast, but I realized that I actually say quite a few things the Southern way lol. Also, I think you guys do a great job of explaining things, kudos!

So you have got the diffenece between them.

Oh, this was so interesting. My family is from Guangdong and we speak Cantonese at home. This was interesting to see how even the southern mandarin dialectical differences are very close to Cantonese, i.e. 雲吞，湯圓，鐘, 搞。。。i think we also use "整" sometimes in cantonese to mean 做. For example, we say 整早餐食 (make breakfast) and 搞 can have a little bit a negative meaning, like "mess around" -- 唔好搞啦 (stop messing around with that)；你兩個喺度搞咩鬼 (what the heck are you two doing?!). These kinds of vidoes are so interesting. 感謝你們。
Hi, I am from Indonesia. I learnt Mandarin when I was in college but there is nobody can speak nor write Mandarin Hanzi in my family. So, I almost lost my ability to speak since I do not have any partner to talk to. I am amazed there are differences between two areas... makes me wanna learn more....

For example, I use 儿化 when saying 哪儿 but for other words I usually use the standard pronunciation （服务员、好玩、等）。As for tomato I say 番茄 and I say 元宵 instead of 汤圆. I wonder how strange this sounds for a native speaker
It doesn't matter if you speak standard Mandarin. In most cases, they can understand what you say. However, you'll impress your friends in China if you speak southern Mandarin Chinese or northern Mandarin Chinese like the way they do.
I grew up thinking 番茄 is just a fancy textbook way of saying 西红柿. You see it written, and everyone understands it, and I don't think anyone would think twice if they heard it. It might not even register that you said it. That's even more the case with 元宵 and 汤圆. A lot of us legit grow up wondering what the difference is. I would add another to the list, which is 星期 vs. 礼拜 vs. 周. Personally, I use 周 most often and occasionally 礼拜, but 星期 I rarely use because it feels too formal to come out of my mouth even though it's the standard. If OTHER people use it though, I wouldn't notice and it does not strike me as strange. The only thing on your list that I would find weird is using the standard pronunciation of 好玩. I feel like that expression with that particular nuance/tone/attitude is something that's very northern to begin with, so when someone says it without an 儿化音, it sounds fake.

I moved to Beijing after like 15 years in the south, and I'm like, "What are people saying?!?" Two years later, I still have trouble understanding sometimes. Especially, all the special terminology in addresses, like 甲 and 单元 really confuse me.
The debate on the name for clocks/watches reminds me of the debate in Mexico about "Tomate" and "Jitomate". In the north, "tomate" is used for all red tomatoes. Green tomatoes are referred to as "Tomatillo". In central and southern regions, "Jitomate" is used for all red tomatoes while "tomate" is used for green tomatoes.
I have to say that both Southerners and Northerners have simple, but really original names for bicycle, I loved them《单车》和《自行车》, because in a way or another, they mean to say "one person vehicle" and that's great, just as the "vapor vehicle" or car, hahaha! So interesting!

Thanks for the wonderful video! I lived in Shanghai to study Chinese for a while, and I did not realize that I do not have 儿化 in my sound at all until I took a taxi in Dalian one time. I asked the driver to go to 人民公园 and he asked me back "you said 人民公园儿?" (and it was not even the right destination... I confused the place I was heading to with a park in Shanghai)
The interesting thing is that Chinese people both say 上饭馆（吃）and 下馆子. Here both 上 and 下 mean "to go". Btw, have you guys thought about why Chinese people say "上厕所“？ A restroom definitely isn't a place where only the lower class go, haha!

In Singapore, majority of our ancestors were from Southern China. Guang Dong, Fujian etc. Hence you can find that our Soy Bean curds are sweet and our meat dumplings are mostly meat just like Southerner's taste.

@@haoliu2660 江米也是糯米，北方的叫法，而且北方做元宵是“滚”出来的，就像滚雪球一样，不像南方直接像包汤团似的 包的，北方一般都是吃炸过的元宵金黄色，南方只能煮，吃不了几个！可以搜搜炸元宵的图片看看哈！
对，我也挺疑惑的，反正在东北，既有元宵，又有汤圆，两个不一样啊，如果有喜欢吃油炸的，只能买元宵，因为汤圆不好炸
是的。在我们湖南，元宵只能是元宵节吃的，是炸的。汤圆就是带汤而且很小颗的那种。
我们这里元宵和汤圆是一种东西，都是搓出来的。中国那么大，不要简单的分类。

普通话不是南方人的母语，自然说的没北方人流利好听，中国还有很多人都不会说普通话的呢！南方大多省说的都是古汉语跟近代北京话根本就不一样。

@@navatouch 在台灣，其實"自行車"跟"腳踏車"兩種詞彙都有人使用喔～ "腳踏"顧名思義就是用腳來踏的車子，e廣義來說，腳踏車也可以指其他陸上的用腳踏的車子，像是三輪腳踏車...但是大家通常說"腳踏車"就是用來指兩輪的Bike. 自行車應該算是比較正式用語或是用於路標。腳踏車聽起來比較口語。這邊也有更多資訊給你參考。：）zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%87%AA%E8%A1%8C%E8%BB%8A
这些词大陆也用，除了花椰菜好像比较少见
不对啊，餐厅听起来很豪华，下馆儿感觉亲切。服务生这个”生”让我感觉像小白脸的意思，不尊重人。小姐意思是妓女。白花椰菜没听说过。脚踏车我认为像是儿童的玩具小自行车。既然要盛汤不能用”匙”，因为匙很小。了解有点像无线电用语，太正式。（纯属个人感受，无敌意）

22. 知道也叫做懂，你知道吗？和你懂吗？是一样意思
23. cooking = 煮饭, boiling water = 煮热水
24. dating and having a relationship = 拍拖 (pak tor )和谈恋爱
25. when you don't agree with sb = 乱乱讲和你讲错料
26. lost = 不见, fall = 掉
27. heavy = 重
28. can't find = 找不到和没有找到
29. asking for directions = 前后左右

台灣人在國外老被大陸的人笑, 說我們有口音, 說我們說的不對, 其實撤退時的老兵來自全國各省各地， 所以台灣的國語, 其實也是五花八門。 像你們這一集做的南北方差異, 在台灣我們都聽過, 都學過。對我們來說沒有什麼南北方之分。我也被大陸同胞取笑說, 「什麼蕃茄？ 那是西紅柿,」什麼『大林子來的鳥， 什麼沒見過』.....我真希望大家都能看到這一集。不要再嘲笑或唾棄台灣人的「國語』跟『普通話』的差異。🙏謝謝你們做了這一集！

The debate on the name for clocks/watches reminds me of the debate in Mexico about "Tomate" and "Jitomate". In the north, "tomate" is used for all red tomatoes. Green tomatoes are referred to as "Tomatillo". In central and southern regions, "Jitomate" is used for all red tomatoes while "tomate" is used for green tomatoes.

I have to say that both Southerners and Northerners have simple, but really original names for bicycle, I loved them《单车》和《自行车》, because in a way or another, they mean to say "one person vehicle" and that's great, just as the "vapor vehicle" or car, hahaha! So interesting!

@@alvin3832 mostly, but parts of henan and shaanxi are south, while parts of jiangsu is north. there's a very good reason for making provincial borders like this.

超级有趣的视频啊！At 6:54 you differentiate "做" in 普通话 from 南方人的“搞” and 北方人的“整”. Are there many other situations where north and south have a different word but 普通话 has a common word?

在广州我们把spoon叫作“汤匙”，“勺子”，广东话则是“匙羹”。第一次听到调羹，觉得很有意思
湖南人也是叫调羹，也叫汤勺，所以这些叫法都是混用，并没有很大差异，经常会不自觉混用中国方言太多，方言的叫法也会有很多不同，但是全中国人基本都能听懂，毕竟中文是表意为主，只要写出来都能懂
我妈是北方人．她做的粽子是枣粽子，小豆粽子，黄豆粉粽子，都甜的粽子．
餐馆儿 这个常用的，公园儿，这种发音比较用好多吧

Thanks for the wonderful video! I lived in Shanghai to study Chinese for a while, and I did not realize that I do not have 儿化 in my sound at all until I took a taxi in Dalian one time. I asked the driver to go to 人民公园 and he asked me back "you said 人民公园儿?" (and it was not even the right destination... I confused the place I was heading to with a park in Shanghai)

The interesting thing is that Chinese people both say 上饭馆（吃）and 下馆子. Here both 上 and 下 mean "to go". Btw, have you guys thought about why Chinese people say "上厕所“？ A restroom definitely isn't a place where only the lower class go, haha!

Languages are sometimes funny and you cannot explain why . For example : 打車 : hit / beat the car ?! When it actually means : catch a cab .
In Singapore, majority of our ancestors were from Southern China. Guang Dong, Fujian etc.
Hence you can find that our Soy Bean curds are sweet and our meat dumplings are mostly meat just like Southerner's taste.
