Really nice and chill review :D The Ryza trilogy really is one of those where you should definitely start at the beginning. Seeing Ryza and co grow up over these games is probably one of my favourite experiences the past couple of years, and I'm sad to see them go. Ryza 1 is what introduced me to the series and I've been hooked ever since.

I agree 100% - I hate crafting in games, but I LOVE the alchemy mechanic in Atelier games
They're just so FUN. It was something that really caught me off guard when I first got into them haha.
I think you just sold me on the series because the “crafting” was what I was most worried about

Ryza 2 was really such a step up from the first game, and definitely worth looking into if you enjoyed at least the characters and some of the game mechanics. I was really amazed at how much of an upgrade it was in about every aspect.
@@orbalology do you think I can jump in with Ryza 2? Never played any Atelier game, though I already heard the Ryza games aren't "pure" turn-based and instead use a new system. I keep hearing Ryza 2 is so much better than 1 so I kinda wanna jump in with the 2nd game.

Congrats on your first code. I am also really enjoying Ryza 3. This is my 15th Atelier game. Its amazing how far the series has come since the first one I played (which was Rorona). My only issue with this one is that it is the buggiest Atelier game I have played. All the bugs are in the synthesis which is quite strange eg. Items you make from duplication sometimes cannot be accessed for anything else. Keep up the great reviews!
Oh interesting I actually didn't notice any bugs during the synthesis sequences, but I didn't really use the item duplication mechanics much. Hopefully that will be fixed in Gust's upcoming patches!
Hi Emily! I am in love with Atelier Ryza 3. I was sad when it's initial release date was delayed, but the wait was well worth it. I've had a ton of fun returning to my previous favorite locations, and discovering new favorites! The different maps are so vast and beautiful. I'm about 40 hours in and I never want the adventure to end! Also, Bos is best boy lol. Great review Emily, and congrats on the review code! 😄

I'm really hoping that in a few weeks I'll finally be able to actually play all of these games that have been piling up that I've been wanting to play. Though I will probably play something a bit on the shorter side since the game I've been playing every once in a while since September is a JRPG. Ryza will be my first Atelier game, and hopefully when I finally get around to it, I can find a physical copy of Ryza 2 and 3.
Traded in some of my wiiU collection at a local retro game store the other day and saw a trilogy pack that included the 1st sophie game and they had a new copy of sophie 2 on its own. So used my credit to pick those up. Can't wait to check out the two sophie games after finishing ryza 3 🤓
The Mysterious Trilogy & Sophie 2 are the next Atelier games I want to check out too. I picked them up last year but just need to set aside some time to get to them. Sophie looks like a really adorable protagonist 😊

Good review. I had pre-ordered Ryza 3 and am slowly playing through it now on PS5. I did play the first two and a bunch of other Atelier games on Switch though. I miss out on some costumes by moving to PS5 but I thought it might play better... Besides I had to do something with my PS5 as I've had it since slightly after launch and have really only played 1 game on it.

I definitely agree. I like Ryza 2 the best but I'm enjoying Ryza 3, it had a very slow start though.
Further into the game there are some really interesting areas & side quests! But agreed it did have a slow start especially compared to 2.
I'm going to get into the Atelier games one of these days. My friends are all big fans of the series.

You can start with any of the trilogies really! The earlier games have time management systems which aren't too bad but they add a little bit of stress compared to the more relaxed approach the new games have adapted. My first Atelier game was Ayesha from the Dusk Trilogy and really loved it. So I would recommend that one or Ryza 1 if you want to jump into the more modern Atelier games :)

Hi Emily, I had a question if that's okay. Can I play the Trails of Series (mentioned in a previous video) at any point in the series and understand it? I don't want to be lost. :( ...But i'm interested, dammit.
For Trails you can start at the first entries for any of the three localized arcs (i.e. Trails in the Sky FC, Trails from Zero, or Trails of Cold Steel 1). It's highly recommended to play them in chronological order because the story & characters do build off from one another. However I know the Sky games are not the most accessible so if you wanted to test out the waters without committing to the entire series I would then recommend starting with Trails from Zero.
I picked up Ryza 3 on launch and have yet to play it but seeing the video definitely makes me want to jump into it! I do usually like to play my games in order but i do not have 1 or 2 in the collection. Maybe playing this one will make me want to find and pick up the others! Great video!
Feel these kinda games are perfect for Switch being able to pick up 'n' play anytime, anywhere and it does look beautiful on OLED screen, buy yeah they need to patch in a text colour change or make it bigger, and I would also like to have had Eng VA. I do however love what I've played so far in this entry :-)
The relaxed pacing for these games really are ideal for the Switch! I'll have to see how the game looks on the OLED once my TotK edition arrives later this month :)

Just got my copy in the mail yesterday. Only got an hour to play last night due to life and that pesky thing called sleep. Loving it so far. The PS5 version so far has no framerate issues that I've noticed. Despite playing on a 55 inch TV, I do agree the text is quite small. It was hard to read at times. White text on a light background is never good and the small text didn't help. Either way looking forward to losing myself in this game. Now as far as the next new entry, my wishlist would probably be Ayesha 2. I feel the dusk trilogy didn't have a satisfying conclusion, and Ayesha was not given any time in the third game (haven't played the dx version of Shallie so I don't know what they did to include her).
OMG I would love to see a sequel to Ayesha! The first game was my introduction to franchise and I just adore her haha.

I bought the game on Steam to give the franchise another try. The graphics and art style in Atelier Ryza 3 are simply breathtaking. The vibrant, colorful visuals bring the world to life (especially on an OLED monitor), and the character designs are beautifully detailed *cough Ryza thighs cough*. The pacing can feel a bit slow at times, especially during the early stages of the game, and the combat system, while serviceable, may not be as deep or challenging as some other RPGs. Having previously played Tales of Abyss it is quite the far cry from that games combat system.
The refined alchemy system, which I'm told has been further improved from previous entries is fun. The alchemy mechanics are intuitive and accessible, allowing players to experiment with different ingredients and recipes to create powerful items and potions. The addition of new alchemy recipes and synthesis techniques adds depth and complexity to the system, providing a satisfying sense of discovery I felt.
Oh I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying the game after giving the franchise another go! It really is such a gem.
And totally agree about the alchemy! There were some play sessions where I would spend hours just playing around with it and had so much fun haha 😊
Not sure if you're concerned with audio but when you get that PS5 if you want the new highest sound quality possible get a soundbar setup or receiver with eArc instead of regular Arc. It sounds great but might annoy your neighbors :)

I like Sony's pulse 3d headset. Great audio and everyone hears me perfect with the dual mic system.
I’ve always wanted to dive in to this series but the overwhelming amount of entries it has on switch always a deterrent. But I’ve always heard great things about them.
Although, I recall playing an atelier game on PSP but that was so long ago I don’t even recall the title. Just that it involves talking swords (crimson and azure azoth). And I remember loving it.

They're really charming and worth looking into if you're interested. I think starting with Ryza 1 is a great way to go to test the waters :)
I haven't played any Atelier games on the PSP, I want to say those weren't localized? But maybe they were or there's some fan patches. I need to go back and play some of the earlier entries now that I'm totally enamored by this series haha.

Hi there, just came across your channel today. I’ve played a bit of Lydie and Suelle, Sophie 2 and Lulua, but I’ve never been able to complete an atelier game ever ☹️ there’s just something I can’t get about the alchemy, I always get stuck when they want me to synthesise stuff to a certain quality and I can’t seem to do it 😞😞😞 I’m definitely interested in the Ryza trilogy and the first ryza is on sale on eshop but I’m worried if I get it, I’ll just get stuck again, like I have in all the other atelier games I tried. Do you have any advice for me!
The Ryza games have a completely different alchemy system, I think they do a good job explaining how it works so it may be worth giving those games a go. There are also some guides online I think that should help you at any point you get stuck :)
I have just started playing but the lack of English voice over and the small font was instantly noticeable. Considering the entry point I see no reason to skip any of the games unless you already bought Ryza 3. Try the first one and if you don't like it then you don't like any of them. If do like then you wanna play all of them anyways.
Yeah the recent Atelier games haven't had English voice acting which is unfortunate.

I tried the first one and just didnt get into it. I think i just dont like these hybrid combat RPG’s. I either want it hack and slash or straight turn based. Also what you said about handheld mode i noticed is a big problem with a lot of games. I recently got a switch lite and most games seem like they are meant for the big screen where as the ds/3ds obviously those were made to be seen on the small screen

I've had it curled before and I do prefer my hair at least wavy. I'm just too lazy with any hair styling so I tend to not bother 😅

I’ve collected every atelier game but have played none. I was thinking of starting with lulua or ryza 1.
I actually haven't started Lulua yet because it's the extension of the Arland Trilogy (which I have yet to play either lol). So you may want to jump into Ryza 1 first. Though it may feel odd to go backwards and play the games with the time management systems if your first game in the franchise didn't incorporate those elements. But I don't think you can go wrong with any you choose really!

I've never played Atelier Ryza games before but I just bought the 3rd one. I'm a guy who could really care less about story should I still play the first one first?
Since you already have the 3rd game you can start that one, just know that most of the conversations will have heavy references to the previous games. So you're going to miss the nostalgia those are all supposed to invoke and honestly I can't see you enjoying most of the dialogue with them recalling back to previous times (which is a majority of the game out side of the exploration, alchemy, and combat. If possible I would try to get the first game even if you're not into stories typically. You're probably going to feel a big disconnect between most of the characters jumping into the 3rd game.

I played the first game and I thought it was good for what it was, so I was kind of excited when they announced a sequel. But when I found out there was no English voice over for the sequel I lost interest. It just struck me as very lazy. A sequel should expand on the first one, not take things away. So I haven’t gone back to the series.
Yeah it's unfortunate the recent entries no longer support English voice acting. Especially considering how much dialogue the games have. The first Ryza game actually didn't have English dub but you may be thinking of another entry in the franchise. That said the gameplay and mechanics I think get better with every entry so it may be worth revisiting some of the more recent games and see how much the series has grown.
can you actually go inside buildings? I was sick of the fake buildings/doors...felt lazy
I bought all 3 on switch before the third shipped. However I'm not loving the first one. It's the pacing of the game, it's slow. I'm tired of all the none optional fetch quests, that part isn't fun. It kills pacing. So far the crafting system kind of sucks. Roughly 7-10hrs in. I'm trying to stay with it but I'm struggling to stay interested.
Also the lack of English voice acting option on a game they are releasing in the Midwest is annoying. I'm American and only speak English.
Yeah these games can be very slow, they're more atmospheric JRPGs I guess is the best way to put them. The Japanese voice acting didn't bother me but I can see how it could be an adjustment for others.

I think it'll still be enjoyable nevertheless. Critics often can't relate to a lot of media that caters to a large, established fanbase.
