Pretty much all murder mysteries are homages to Agatha Christie. She pretty much defined the genre.
The fact that they literally showed you how he died 1/3 of the way through and STILL had a compelling mystery to unravel was just amazing. Especially to people used to mysteries.

Interesting, did we have any murder mysteries like that before her?
Like when in school we read that story of Siegfried the dragonslayer and each chapter started with spoilers to avoid any tension, the opposite we would expect today.

Fun Fact: The lawyer is played by the legendary Frank Oz. You might not recognize him, but you've almost definitely heard him: He's the voice of Yoda. He also voiced a bunch of characters on The Muppet Show (Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, & Animal) & Sesame Street (Bert, Grover, & the Cookie Monster)...

I remember watching this when it came out and my wife and thoroughly enjoyed it.
However, and I'm no sleuth, I recall figuring it out as Marta discovered the housemaid at the old laundromat, who said forcefully, "Hugh did this!".
"You" and "Hugh" are JUST the type of homophonic words to listen for during intense moments in a murder mystery.

If you’d ever be willing to go back to the 30s, in spite of fewer viewers, here are two good ones. They’re not whodunits, but they are suspenseful: *Heat Lightning* (1934) features two sisters who run a service station & café in the California Desert. Throughout one day, various characters stop by, some to stay the night, and eventually someone gets killed. *Checkmate* (1935) is a British drama of cops and thieves, in which the idea of the game is paramount, and chess is a central metaphor.

Knives Out and Glass Onion are Rian Johnson's homages to the mysteries of Agatha Christie. Benoit Blanc himself is a variation of the traditional gentleman sleuth, not unlike Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot (see Murder On The Orient Express and Death On The Nile). Johnson's Benoit Blanc films are also an indictment of the wealthy, which is a common theme in Agatha Christie's mysteries as well.
The house is an homage to the Sidney Lumet classic Sleuth, which starred a young Michael Caine opposite Sir Laurence Olivier.
The board game Clue (from which the film is inspired) was itself inspired the works of Agatha Christie, not only the Poirot mysteries, but other titles as well, such as "And Then There Were None".

I remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing!
when Marta threw up on Ransom that was actually baby food mixed with water. Knowing that makes it easier to watch.
The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Have you read Agatha Christie? Her works broke the rules of the mystery genre; she became known as The Queen of Crime. Her novels go from 1920-1970s.
Actress who played Marta gave a phenomenal performance! Glad they cut away to her reaction to the suicide; the look of horror on her face was outstanding!
Like Blanc said, Harlan’s demise was the result of “a tragedy of errors.” When he pointed out how Marta could visually spot the differences between the morphine and the correct medication, he said it so quickly. Needed subtitles for that.
Can’t wait for the sequel! Glass Onion. Turns out that’s a Beatles song!

Who-dun-its are far a few in between.
This one was incredible to watch.
    Great ensemble cast.
Daniel Craig in his 2nd best role since protraying James Bond.
He and Ana de Armas (Marta) co-starred in Bond 25:No Time to Die.
When they announced the sequel with Daniel Craig reprising his role, I was ecstatic.
Entitled "Glass Onion:A Knives Out Mystery" and it'll Netflix during holidays of this year.

I feel like you'd really enjoy a UK 90s show called Jonathan Creek. Lots of weird deaths/murders that the lead has to solve and there's always a really fun explanation at the end.

This was a fun movie. It actually is more of a homage to classic Agatha Christie mysteries, which were formatted just like this, with a dozen suspects and an eccentric detective. Miss Marple was my favorite.

One of my favorites is Laura, a classic noir. I won't say more; the reveals are a great part of the fun.

WOW!!!Marta gets the whole Kitten-Kaboodle!!!This film reminds me of "Greedy" with Michael J Fox and Kirk Douglas and Olivia D'Abo except more serious and a murder took place.DonJohnson is a long ways away from his Miami Vice days. But he looks good.

While it is not a murder mystery, based on your enjoyment of Knives Out, I think you should look into The Game from 1997, starring Michael Douglas.

You would probably enjoy the 1979s version of Murder on the Orient Express. A fantastic movie and, unlike the recent version, is loyal to Agatha Christie’s book.

You do know that Daniel Craig (Blanc) is the latest 007 James Bond (Bondi)? Ana Armas (Marta) just made the Movie “Blonde” about Marilyn Monroe. Great Cast, the husband Richard is Don Johnson (Miami Vice & Nash Bridges) who is the father of Dakota Johnson ( Fifty Shades of Grey) and the ex-husband of Melanie Griffith (Working Girl) and Melanie’s mother (Dakota’s grandmother) is Tippi Heddron star of the Alfred Hitchcock Thriller “The Birds”. It’s a Frigg’n Dynasty!…. SanJoséBob

For fans of "Who Dunnit" movies I suggest an old classic "And Then There Were None". It's based on Agatha Christie's novel of the same name. There is a later remake called "Ten Little Indians" and while a good movie it pales in comparison to the original. It will keep you guessing until the end.

I'm surprised you didn't comment on Daniel Craig, who most people only remember as a super cynical, gritty version of James Bond, playing the laid back, southern speaking gentleman detective, and clearly having a hell of a lot of fun doing it.
Though if you havn't seen any of the Daniel Craig Bond movies, I suspect there's less impact.
Though one thing you missed, which admittedly was hard to spot, is that the portrait of Harlan started out scowling, and ended with a slight smirk.

Fun watch Jen - admittedly mysteries are a chore for me - way too many red herrings/false leads/everyone's a liar tropes - but this film truly out does it self largely to a great crackerjack cast 7 direction. CLUE is more or less a tongue-thru-cheek spoof of the genre (um based on a baord game too) but sure check it out too.
