As someone old enough to see Rear Window in the theater, you give me great hope for your generation. You have the patients, attention span and intelligence to appreciate subtleties in storytelling. If a modern film doesn’t start at warp speed so many minds switch off. Thank you Jen for sharing your time.

    • @manofthehour6856

So well said, 1matrix9!! I'm guessing my age is split between you and Jen, but I completely agree with what you say!!! I can't even follow "action" films of today, and the CGI lacks conviction. Jen represents the group of intelligent, open-minded people apparently curious about things and people that are not of their generation, but have an appreciation for those eras. The variety of films Jen reviews is magnificent. "Rear Window" may have been released in 1954, but Grace Kelly never aged....the film captures her beauty, grace (how appropos!), and sophistication in a moment of "timeless time".

Hitchcock made movies that cause the audience to think. He expected his fans to be patient and intelligent enough to fill in the gaps that were left deliberately ambiguous. Unlike many modern directors, Hitchcock expected people to work their brains a bit. Glad you enjoyed it Jen, I enjoyed your reaction as always.

If I remember correctly, Stewart put his acting career on hold when WW II broke out, joined the military, and served as part of the crew of a bomber that flew missions over Europe. He went back to acting after the war and had a very successful career.
They don't make them like him any more. I certainly can't think of a modern actor that would do that.
Also, living together without being married was considered very scandalous back then, as was having a baby out of wedlock.

    • @zacharylewis2802

Also, It’s A Wonderful Life was his first film after returning from war, and he was suffering what’s now understood to be PTSD. He thought it was his best work, but he only saw it once because it brought back bad memories.

If you have never seen him before, you need to watch the holiday movie It's a Wonderful Life. Classic. There are a lot of great Jimmy Stewart movies. Vertigo is another Hitchcock film with Stewart and Kim Novak. Then there is Harvey, The Shop Around the Corner, Mr. Smith goes to Washington and lots more. Grace Kelly was a wonderful actress also. Many apartment buildings included a morality clause in the lease agreement to allow them to kick out habitually rowdy tenants. It was a very "flexible" clause.

My parents got married in '71 and while they were dating they could not go to my Dad's apartment, because if his landlady would have allowed it she could have been fined for "Verkupplung" (coupling). It was illegal for unmarried couples to be at each other's places. My Dad on the other hand could not go home with my Mom because she was still living at home with her Dad.
Weirdly enough that is the reason why on my way to elementary school I daily walked by the park bench my parents used to meet and where they shared their first kisses.
To this day they always smile (and when together kiss) when they pass that place ☺️ ... Sorry for the rant 😅 The "staying at each other's places issue" lead me down memory lane it seems 😂

I remember in 1968 or so, there was a headline article in the NY Times about a guy and a girl living together but unmarried. And this was in NEW YORK CITY.
Back then, a mother would often say of her daughter "she is a GOOD girl" meaning a virgin. Divorced women were considered "loose" for married guys "on the make" so often a woman divorced, she was generally excluded in polite company because the other women feared for their men.
An unmarried woman could not get served in a restaurant without a male companion.
A man and woman could not check into a motel unless they had luggage as otherwise it was likely to be locals getting together for a "quickie."
Remember, the pill was not approved by the FDA until 1960, and birth control was illegal for married women until 1965, unmarried women, 1972
Hitchcock was constantly "pushing the envelope."

Rear Window and To Catch A Thief fight for my top Hitchcock spot, and Rear Window usually wins because I've seen it more.
I enjoy the 'bottle' format, trapped in the apartment with our protagonist, and the voyeuristic way the camera leers around the neighborhood until it starts to follow our suspect's activity.
Stewart and Kelly have good 'opposites attract' chemistry. The camera loves Grace Kelly and she shines on celluloid.

Hitchcock makes a cameo in each of his films, so yes, it was him adjusting the clock in this film. If you like simple sets, "Rope" is another Hitchcock film with a small set. That one is in a single apartment, and it's filmed in such a way that it looks like it was all one long take, but it was limited by the length of the film roll; so he had to use tricks to go from one shot to the next. I think I have seen "The Man Who Knew Too Much" more than others of his films.
I never really thought about the detail about her case for the night being so small. But as she's trying to prove she can live in the life he lives, he had said not long before that moment that she would have to live out of a single suitcase. He wondered if she could do it. Somehow I missed that the next chance she had, she came with a small case with enough to stay the night. So she could likely handle life with him with a normal suitcase.

The final act of the film takes place on Christmas Eve, just the final 35 or 40 minutes of the film, but that was enough to make it one of the best Christmas films of all time. A man who thinks he has messed up his life and his families life makes the decision to kill himself, and an angel shows him just how important and loved he is.

Glad you liked it. One of Hitchcock's best. One way he made the empathetic with Jeff is paralleling Jeff stuck in his wheelchair and watching little movies through windows of his neighbors and the audience stuck in their theater chairs watching the movie screen. There's a whole lot of Hitchcock to recommend, but i d move a little more chronologically and start with his first American film REBECCA or go even further back to one of his best British thrillers THE 39 STEPS. My personal favorite film of his though is NOTORIOUS. But you can't go wrong with any of the other suggestions here. Ciao for now.

James Stewart is a legendary actor who made some awesome movies in his time. He starred in some sensational movies, from a NYC apartment courtyard, to the Alaska wilderness during the old West. One such movie, "The Far Country", a Western that does take place in Alaska, his character is named Jeff, and stars another legendary actor Walter Brennan. It is a movie I would recommend if you would like to explore James Stewart's acting career. Thanks for sharing your reaction and I am looking forward for more. 👍🎥👌

Disturbia (2007) is a remake/knock off of Rear Window. But it's still pretty good.
A modern-day retelling, with the protagonist (Shia LaBeouf) under house arrest instead of laid up with a broken leg, and who believes that his neighbor (David Morse) is a serial killer rather than having committed a single murder.

Rope is another Hitchcock film that features James Stuart. It was shot continuously, and when they needed to change film reels, they would focus on something static, have everyone freeze, change the film, and have everyone start up again. Also, it was based on a real-life murder case.

We're back again with Alfred Hitchcock's finesse as being the Master of Suspense with "Rear Window"! Hitch does put himself in a cameo on many of his films so it's nice when you spot him and tell us, the audience, that you found him. It's like those Stan Lee cameos in the MCU! I want to throw my top three Hitch films for you to view and the others I'm listing to perhaps be put on a Hitchcock poll or for you to view one Hitchcock film a month (or every 6 weeks): 1) Rebecca" (1940); 2) "The Birds" (1963); 3) "North By Northwest" (1959). Others: A) "The 39 Steps" (1935); B) "The Lady Vanishes" (1938); C) "Shadow of a Doubt" (1943); D) "Strangers on a Train" (1951); E) "To Catch a Thief" (1955). I'm glad that you enjoyed this film. 🎥💖

My favorite Hitchcock film is The Lady Vanishes from 1938.
An old lady sitting next to the main character on a train disappears while she's asleep and no one believes her, so she has to prove that she was there, and find her.
It's much more lighthearted than his later stuff, but well worth it. If you can find it, it's a little hard to get a hold of these days.

Raymond Burr, the villain, also made a name for himself playing the TV version of the very famous detective turned lawyer Perry Mason solving murders most foul, which was on around the same time as this movie. It was quite a popular show. The "Law and Order" of its day. I used to watch it with my late grandfather on syndicated reruns. Good memories.

I would like to add my voice to the numerous suggestions that you should watch James Stewart in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." It is one of my favorite James Stewart dramatic movies. Since I don't see anyone mentioning it (overlooked, Im sure, only because Mister Stewart has such a huge volume of great performances), I recommend watching his sweet, funny and poignant performance in the comedy "Harvey." I'd also like to mention a lesser movie, but a very charming, lightweight romantic comedy: "The Shop Around The Corner."

I encourage you to look into more Jimmy Stewart movies. He was a great actor. A little background on him. He was an Academy Award winning actor prior to WW2. Many actors joined the service when the war broke out, mostly as entertainers. Jimmy Stewart, already a private pilot, enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He flew bombers over Europe.
After the war he remained in the reserves even after returning to acting. Eventually he retired from the military as a one star General.

Hitchcock did another movie where he used a single set. In Rear Window you get the apartment and the view of the other windows and a restaurant down the street. Together, it was a huge set in Paramount Studios.
In "Rope", which also includes James Stewart, everything takes place inside an apartment. It was based on a play.
Hitchcock/Stewart collaborated 4 times: Rope, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much and Vertigo, in that order.

After World War II, Jimmy Stewart could pull out some dark acting when needed. Unlike some Hollywood types that went into the military. He was the real deal. He flew B-24 bomber missions in Europe, became a squadron operations officer, then squadron commander, then I think some Group staff job. The last one his commander pulled him out of combat. He did a lot of missions, including one time looking down and a German flak round had put a hole in the floorboards near is foot. He could look down and see the ground. One of many who (what was never talked about then) had a full case of PTSD. Anyway, great review as always. Keep up the great work.

There really were apartments and neighborhoods like this. --- Metal fire escapes, and people sometimes slept on the porches and left windows wide open to beat the heat before a/c. Everybody knew everybody else and just about everything about them.
