yeah so i just spun a bearing in my WRX. definitely just gotta get a new short block. no point in re-honing the old block again. its basically the same cost unless you have a good relationship with, as you mentioned, one of the like, 4 shops in the country that could do it RIGHT. you CAN do the rest of the work at home though if you know the platform. but yeah, Subaru motors are expensive to fix. oh well.
It was the right exemple about people saying "hey subaru haha again..." BUT finally they found a kink hose and a bad fuel situation 🤦 loll how you can think it will goes well. I mean for EVERY car !!! The brand was always pointed out in general but most of the time people doesn't know the real stories about these situations. When you really start trying to check the real story about it, generaly it broke because of an essential reason that is even bad for every car. Yes there is some specific things on Subaru that you have to care about more than other brand, but most of the time there is a reason about failure. There are many many nice builds about like 600whp that least for many years and it was especially good for (we have to admit) a streched power on a 4 cylinders. But that, for the haters, they don't focus on that, sure, they just focus on bad things that I will say can happen on many modified cars other than Subaru. Compare apple with apple. This is a 4 cylinders aluminium block, don't forget that.
Forgive my ignorance but is there a reason you continued to let the motor run after blowing up? Wouldn’t it of been better to cut the ignition vs letting it idle to death?
Wasn't David's fault, would have happened to anyone irregardless of the driver, I assume the shop will pay for it since it wasn't on the owner's watch, and because it was the shop's idea, but frankly the shop will probably make their money back from the publicity of David's videos anyways so in the end everyone walks away happy.
So I noticed he said that the block has to be machined when you take the crank casing apart. Why is that? and is that for all Subaru engines or just EJs?
Was probably tuned with injector times to correct the crushed fuel hose and flogged pump. Now you have fixed those things it has way to much fuel for start up.
Tbh I don't understand the obsession with high hp... I would rather have my dads stock motor 03(blobeye) STI (2.0L) rally car, that has even less hp than stock thanks to the 34mm(or was it 36mm lol) turbo restrictor. He has had it for a year and a half and the only thing he has had to fix was a fuel pump and some maintenance stuff (oils, fluids etc). That thing has been reliable as ever.
Subarus are finicky, touchy and complex beasts. But if you know what you're getting into, build them right, be aware of these details, man.... they're a JOY to run. And they will RUN. Can confirm, 500whp 2018 Varis WRX STI owner here. Going strong. Edit: The engine was built by IAG and the internals were worked by a authorized shop, I ain't doing anything at home with that rofl.
So splitting the block isn't a great DIY idea. But what about swapping in a stage 2 block from IAG and getting the OEM heads re-machined? Are the tolerances on that as tricky if the short block is left untouched from IAG?
Damn my block was literally built on a kitchen table......now i’m scared but it’s been running fine aside from needing another set of spark plugs to throw at it to get the misfire codes dealt with. The block should be fine it’s built with a laundry list of supporting parts
Wonder why a built Subaru is so involved to time? Stock Subaru engines are super easy to time maybe ots because the case split? I'm interested to know as I do timing on Subaru and heads from time to time but they are stock cars
These motors aren't meant for this kinda power period. Sure, a 1.6 na motor could be upgraded to make 1000hp but will it last long enough to matter? No.
Thats guy is so irritating to watch. He's got alot of content, but Ive never been able to get thru one of his videos. After awhile it's like just stop talking for 2 minutes and show the car.

It’s a Subaru that’s what happened. Sorry it was too easy. I love Subaru’s and sold them when the wrx and STi launched in the USA. Sold the first one ever out of our dealership as guy put a deposit down months before we got it.

yeah so i just spun a bearing in my WRX. definitely just gotta get a new short block. no point in re-honing the old block again. its basically the same cost unless you have a good relationship with, as you mentioned, one of the like, 4 shops in the country that could do it RIGHT.
you CAN do the rest of the work at home though if you know the platform. but yeah, Subaru motors are expensive to fix. oh well.
Ngl gives me more pride knowing I built it at home even though I had iag handle the bottom end
Thanks for the spark plug change tip
Moral of story. just go get a K series Honda LOL
they have a hako just chillin in the back
I’m still gonna just eBay build a 2.5 block for a hybrid build in a garage. If it blows up I’ll swap in another eBay built block lol
My friend is doing that with a beams in a 76 celica Lmao!
Just go LS
I built my Ej and Im still running strong with 450 whp Rotated!
"I blew up some guys Subaru and let me explain how it's all his fault"
Because he's bad at rebuilding an engine
I had a stock Blobeyes for 2 years! i never had any problem until i started to mod it! Japanese cars are reliable within their own engineering spec!!
Forgive my ignorance but is there a reason you continued to let the motor run after blowing up? Wouldn’t it of been better to cut the ignition vs letting it idle to death?
Awesome video!
Curious to know who's paying for the repairs, David, the owner, or the shop?
Probably the shop since they offered to let him drive it
Wasn't David's fault, would have happened to anyone irregardless of the driver, I assume the shop will pay for it since it wasn't on the owner's watch, and because it was the shop's idea, but frankly the shop will probably make their money back from the publicity of David's videos anyways so in the end everyone walks away happy.
So I noticed he said that the block has to be machined when you take the crank casing apart. Why is that? and is that for all Subaru engines or just EJs?
It’s for all of them with absurd amounts of horsepower
And all of them in general
Yep. "After 700 the engine becomes a wear item." Lol
07 sti 78k on the car about 18 k on motor 422hp it loves it .
"LET ME FILM YOU!" -David, 2021
So does this warning regarding DIY rebuilds only apply to USDM EJs? Or EJs from all markets? Or is there no difference? Sorry I don't know.
The engine becomes a wear item!? That’s racing
Was probably tuned with injector times to correct the crushed fuel hose and flogged pump. Now you have fixed those things it has way to much fuel for start up.
Modified cars can be a pain in the butt. No such thing as a warranty on a modified car. You pay to play.
I am a bit surprised they didn't mention or recommend prebuilt engines, or closed deck.
Man, how did I not know about this shop, not that far from me.
Let's get some saqb action
"you can't have a kink in your line like this"
Proceeds to show an AN fitting with less than a 30* bend.
you must not understand how cylinder pressures work bud, that is plenty enough restriction to blow seals
Theres a difference between a Kink and a pre-bent fitting there bud.
This is why I take my wrx to a specialty shop because honestly I don’t want to mess it up. Love my Subaru but damn they are complicated
Drive a high hp car and you’ll understand boy
@@miguemerkinrivera2664 kratos?
He’s screaming the entire time 😫
everybody else politely tolerating it 🙄
If he didn't have his TH-cam channel, they would have kicked him out
Crank sensor maybe? Losing sync?
It's been absolute ages since I have been this early and I love it!!
ThatDudeInBlue is a Subaru killer !
It's what makes a subaru a subaru
You didn't blow it up, it's an EJ, it blew itself up.
Hows your wrx holding up?
@@exofry94 Still going strong and driving hard! No iissues here :)
Called it. You can't keep E85 in a car for too long.
PLEASE DO A LEXUS ISF REVIEW
Also, David have you driven a VW Jetta TDI Manual yet?
Why don’t u guys use a aem FAILSAFE, should’ve seen the lean condition
Blowing up. It’s what subie motors do
So splitting the block isn't a great DIY idea. But what about swapping in a stage 2 block from IAG and getting the OEM heads re-machined? Are the tolerances on that as tricky if the short block is left untouched from IAG?
I just put my buddys engine together, finished it last night. He got an IAG block and machined his heads and it runs no problems.
Man, I want to love Subarus but jesus christ.
I was just in Des Moine, originally from Illinois!
Is it just me or was there one guy in that shop that didn't seem to fit in with the rest?
Damn my block was literally built on a kitchen table......now i’m scared but it’s been running fine aside from needing another set of spark plugs to throw at it to get the misfire codes dealt with. The block should be fine it’s built with a laundry list of supporting parts
I built mine on a plastic folding table.
Wonder why a built Subaru is so involved to time? Stock Subaru engines are super easy to time maybe ots because the case split? I'm interested to know as I do timing on Subaru and heads from time to time but they are stock cars
Lol looks like your wideband says htr=hater. Much respect brotha I also have a subi and have been watching your vids for years and live in the 757.
I may be missing a joke here but that likely meant "heater".
I'm sure the wideband is trying to calibrate just thought it was funny after all that work and the camera inside the vehicle was still saying htr.
Best Nissan ad I've ever seen lol
Yo I live in cedar rapids iowa. Shout out man!
Well so far no engine issues with my Terminator
@HonkeyConk pretty much why I never built the 07 STI I had
These motors aren't meant for this kinda power period. Sure, a 1.6 na motor could be upgraded to make 1000hp but will it last long enough to matter? No.
Grayson looks like Braun Strowman
Smeedia had his 2017 eg33 built by outfront that is really cool
Thats guy is so irritating to watch. He's got alot of content, but Ive never been able to get thru one of his videos. After awhile it's like just stop talking for 2 minutes and show the car.
@@christopherhuff3123 He’s just very informative! It’s for people that actually want to learn a thing or two...
Add those suspected causes to most cars and watch the rebuild bill come in, not exclusive to EJs.
Have a goddamn EJ20 that will crank but won't fire. The so-called Subie pro says he can't figure it out. Similar to what this doing. Any suggestions on what's a common issue that causes this or that could POSSIBLY fix this???🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@ThatDudeinBlue Hey David im still gonna build my subaru at home ;) however not for 1200hp and yes it will be a daily still, will my block be line honed and bored yes from a ma and pop shop? yes. Do they have the tooling and machines for it? yes they do. David sir i do mostly agree with you for the complex things that need to go to a legit shop for but not all things need to go there. Im also building an Evo 9 in my garage right now that will be capable of 900whp, that same mom and pop shop line honed and bored that block. however will it be running that high??? no it will not a modest 550-600 pump should do fine to hurt most peoples feelings. Love what you do Love your channel! i'm just busting some nuts here in the comments :D
I know many builders who habe never line honed a subaru wngine and those cars are still running to this day. Maybe if your going for high hp, but i dont believe thats always the case. Just my opinion
If I buy a pos subie I’m just gonna do a catback. Or is that too much ?
It’s a Subaru that’s what happened. Sorry it was too easy. I love Subaru’s and sold them when the wrx and STi launched in the USA. Sold the first one ever out of our dealership as guy put a deposit down months before we got it.
The car had performance anxiety 🌚😂
My 2015 STI with 100,400 miles got rod knock. Wasnt stock either.
I can't believe this guy is saying there is more places in Aus who can machine these motors than there is in the US.
More than a handful down here building in house engines ranging from the standard drive in drive out 400hp all the way to 1000+ HP cars with and without billet blocks.
should of kept your eye on the AFR :D?
When something leans out immediately like that, there's nothing you're gonna do to stop it lol
Subarus blow up if you even suggest it might lean out
He had multiple fuel cut and decide to continue trying to push it.... Hello
"Let me film youuuuu!" 😂😂😂
T.D.I.B- its doing somethi..
Other dude- keep going 👀
