I had to stop several times from overheating, including a stop in Harrisonburg to replace the radiator cap and top off the coolant (which was dry and brown...). Luckily it's been a champ the last year after a thorough system flush and replacing little bits and pieces.
Oh hell yes! As a VA WRX owner, I can't wait to see what mods are planned. The STI's engine might be super old in this gen, but it means there's literally decades of R&D and aftermarket support at this point.

This is awesome! My wife recently had a similar situation with finding her car we'd been searching for for about 3 years. We finally found her perfectly-spec'd Buick Regal TourX in San Jose... and we live in Montana. Well.. you know the rest. Worth all the time, all the miles, all the road trip snacks, all the hotels. She's happy. As am I. I get to see it every day and drive it pretty often. It's a win/win.
I purchased my 2003 Mustang Cobra from a guy in GA, sight unseen as well, flew down, he picked me up from the airport and I road tripped it back to Michigan, it was the most fun I've ever had on a road trip, I'd highly encourage anyone to travel to go find their dream car and trip it back.
This reminds me of what I did this summer. I'm 20 and I took a road trip from Nebraska to Alabama in my Subaru to buy my 1991 Nissan 240sx. We drove the Nissan back home and the Subaru. I've also spent time in the PNW, specifically Oregon on the curvy highway 101 and carved roads. Great times.
I first thought white would be bad car but i learn white is actually a better option. When you do some cosmetic mod, you have a lot of options. I recently bought a red car and i actually thing i would have gone for a white one. Specifically painting your calipers.
This video really captures both the excitement of a cross country adventure and buying a new car and combines them into one amazing experience, awesome work.
Oh yeah LOL. I remember the Ford Escort. That was when I subscribed to the channel and it's very strange because now it's almost like a completely different channel
I drove a Jeep Comanche from Arizona to Indiana right through the hurricane that came up from Texas last august. Absolute blast. It was 115 degrees with no AC and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
Did a similar thing this summer, bought a low mileage 1994 mustang GT sight unseen and went all the way to Ohio to get it, then drove it back to Virginia lol. It's such a fun thing that everyone should experience at least once
Lol Jason's hilarious I absolutely love his channel as well. Personally dont like the newer gen of Subarus they have gotten so big compared to the Hawkeye and down it's essentially become a sporty family sedan. Rather than a 4 door sports car.
WRX/STI has become the ultimate Dad car. You can stuff kids in it comfortably, haul loads of groceries when you need to, and still have a fun car to drive when you are alone. Works out pretty good for me. If you want a small sporty 4 door car, get a Golf R or Audi S3. Smaller, and...well faster really...
This has been a life goal for me for a while. Buy a car really far away and road trip it home with a friend. I had a 2005 legacy gt wagon 8 or so years ago. Loved that car. So comfortable and practical. All the room of a suv without bobbing your head from side to side over every bump. The mileage and the premium fuel prices were killing me, and the obvious reliability issues. Turbo blown due to oil filter clogging. Melted piston from fuel starvation at full throttle. You know all the obvious ones.
I had it too on my 12 STI, but I sold it. Now I thinking about buy it again, because, they are great for winter setup. For summer I have 19" advan racing gt.
No way! I’m picking up my sti next week and I’m moving to Eugene Oregon 😂 from 15min out of Washington DC. Gonna be doing this same trip in reverse. And this video has great information on what the trip would be like

I did the same. I bought my Audi in Dallas, sight unseen. Then a 3-day road trip back to Seattle. Zero regrets. I would gladly do it again. I wish more people were willing (and able) to explore this beautiful country.
No way! My first car was also an 08 Spec B. I loved that car to bits and adored every moment I had with it. It unfortunately was totaled in an accident 6 months ago :(
Given how many 1200+ mile trips we've done in Subaru Legacy and Outbacks, I envy your cross country tip. Epic scenery and memories that you will treasure.
I personally like the 15 bumper! I think it looks cleaner especially with mods. I'm hoping the 15-17 fit the 2020/21 models... I know they fit in reverse so it would make sense that they would.
Had a huge wave of nostalgia watching this. I bought my first WRX (first manual too) 1,200 miles away from home and drove it home in one weekend with my dad. It was such a fun road trip and got that same feeling from watching this video. Excited to see what you do with the STI!
as a portland native we have such an abundance of subies here, not suprised you found a clean sti here theres a surplus of them. my first car was a bugeye wrx
Just bought a 2019 sti with my perfect spec. Factory short throw, keyless, wing delete, recaros with sunroof. It’s a fun daily. Only mods it will ever see are axle back, sway bars and rally armor. Gotta go neon logo to match the calipers lol.
I was a highschool exchange student back in 2011 when I took a photo right by that exact "Welcome to Wisconsin" sign at 14:20 ! This was a flash back I wasn't expecting for sure! Nice!
I just picked up a 2013 sti with 50k miles 2 weeks ago, I’ve been looking for one for so long and finally bought one! I love the car and I’m excited to put more money in the car
I bought a 2020 WRX STI sight unseen damaged from across the country at the dealer auction. It’s currently in a truck being towed home. I can’t wait to fix it and have some fun hopefully before the snow gets here.
The VA Chassis gets a lot of hate. But I love it. I bought just premium WRX and it's absouelty been my favorite car I have ever owned! 40k miles in 2 years and it's been flawless. I love it. Its not modded much, just cobb stage 2+ with an E tune, BC coils, and upgraded sway bays. It's my daily and kid mover. It's fun to drive, and still gets 30+ mpg on long trips.
As a fellow Subaru fan I am excited for your 7th Subaru. I myself miss having one. Yes they are not a Toyota or Honda with reliability. But they are a blast to drive and that's why we drive. To have a fun time.
Oh boy, remember march of 2020, drove 2 hours out to PA to buy my first 5 speed 96 Miata! First time driving manual and Didint stall once coming home! It was one of the most nostalgic/grateful moments I’ve had when just getting into cars, unfortunately the storm floods took her few weeks back :(
I did the same thing!!! I traveled from Michigan to southern California (Los Angeles area) for a 2010 Forester XT with 16k miles back in March 2021. My GF and I drove it from there, up north to San Francisco, then cut across the states through Idaho, Iowa and such back home. :D
An IT tech working on my university campus here in Jamaica owns a Forester. Every time he drives it past my dorm i cannot help but stop and listen because the rumble from that boxer is so goddamn good. I hope to own a Subaru one day
Things to watch out for on EJ's depending on year: banjo bolt filter getting dirty, oil pump was a bit underpowered from 2004-2007 or 2008 something like that, oil pickup not the best in the oil pan. There are some other videos on youtube that really dig into common EJ failures you should look into especially if you upgrade it!
I just got a ‘16 STI last week it’s my very first Subaru and likely not my last. Thought I was seein double here- White with no sun roof, push button start and keyless entry, and heated alcantara seats with a 56k on the dash, never knew that was a rare combo. I only had to drive 10 minutes to get it here in the St Louis area x) traded my ‘14 ram big horn and have loved every minute of it wish I’d done it sooner it’s so much fun thank you for sharing this adventure I hope to have one like it some day!
I live in the UK, everytime i see one of these road trip videos i still can't believe how big America actually is. For context if you drove 3000 miles East from the UK you would be in Azerbaijan!!!
1:38 instantly subbed and hit the notification bell. Oh the oh so well know feeling, "best car ever" followed by "of course I sold it". Only car people know this pain. I spent 7 years looking for a low mileage, one owner, mint 2003 Acura CL Type S 6MT. Found one 2200 miles away. Bought it sight unseen, flew, got it, and cried when I got in to drive cross country. Sold it 5 months later...To this day I can't get over it (this was in 2015).
Welcome to Oregon (my true home)! I just got back to where I live from a trip to see friends and family in Oregon and Washington, and my car (a 2007 Honda Accord EX-L V6 6spd coupe, 230K miles, one owner) got more love on the trip, and parts were waiting for her when we got back. Your channel is a big reason I'm "wasting" money again on the whole car thing, though it's not all your fault. The other impetus came from looking for a newer Accord V6 to replace the one I have. I quickly realized not only are the newer ones scarcely available, but even my current car is sought after these days for her six cylinders and six forward gears. She's mostly a road trip car, the wife and I drive her 2007 Honda Element (same color as the Accord, even) around town most of the time. Most of what is going on with my Accord is upgraded parts that also act as maintenance, but after having a swapped Civic many years ago the bug is back. I had planned to drive this summer to Virginia and back, but with the cost of fuel (even with 30+ highway MPG out of a Honda V6), I'm going to keep the trips shorter and spend the money on more parts.
After watching your videos my new passion now is this Subaru 🤩 As soon as I finish building a house my next target is this! Thanks for making such videos and show such a Subaru isn't a bad idea for a daily driver!

I own a 2006 GT 5MT, STI Engine, fmic, supportingmods, 7 years baby! Love my baby.
Get well soon ben!
So MCM and GAG both now have white Sti's. There really is nothing else out there atm is there XD
14:00 talking about how reliable it is and doesn’t mention the Subaru garage behind
Please keep the 17’s, they look great
it's so skinny though
I had it too on my 12 STI, but I sold it. Now I thinking about buy it again, because, they are great for winter setup. For summer I have 19" advan racing gt.
No way! I’m picking up my sti next week and I’m moving to Eugene Oregon 😂 from 15min out of Washington DC. Gonna be doing this same trip in reverse. And this video has great information on what the trip would be like
STIs are so underrated, almost the perfect car
Really ?? I’ve seen them everywhere in NY and Ohio. They’re soo valuable
See em everywhere in Massachusetts as well
i just got mine!! I sold my last 2019 and now i got another 1!! not getting ride of this one. Electric cars will take over and these will be priceless over the years!
I'm fucking stressed at college so seeing this on a Saturday morning is relaxing before I go back finishing my papers.
Just know that it'll all work out in the end, and college doesn't last forever :) I graduated a few years ago and miss it in a sense. Had much more free time haha
@@Airsoft1287 thanks! It’s not my first time, I went back to get my bachelor’s so I know how stressful it can be but it’s been a while since then so it feels so new to me again.
@@bosch_doc you should come out the other end prouder than before that you've accomplished something you once set down, be it out of choice or necessity, you gathered the strength to pick it back up and complete it!
I did the same. I bought my Audi in Dallas, sight unseen. Then a 3-day road trip back to Seattle. Zero regrets. I would gladly do it again. I wish more people were willing (and able) to explore this beautiful country.
this was such a beauitful video! makes me appreciate my sti even more! i’m also from VA!
Good thing you did the obligatory head gasket job in the Motel 6 parking lot before the Road trip.
This didn’t age well
What do you mean? Like I’m curious as what you’re referencing. I might be out of the loop.
How so?
What?
This is actually an awesome idea for anyone looking to buy a car and take a vacay. America is huge and beautiful.
I think if you did a 2018 front bumper swap it would look clean.

Ben: “knock on wood”
Ben’s forehead: HEY HEY, they can’t know!
as a portland native we have such an abundance of subies here, not suprised you found a clean sti here theres a surplus of them. my first car was a bugeye wrx
Pray for Ben
Just bought a 2019 sti with my perfect spec. Factory short throw, keyless, wing delete, recaros with sunroof. It’s a fun daily. Only mods it will ever see are axle back, sway bars and rally armor. Gotta go neon logo to match the calipers lol.
I know it's old and getting replaced, but goddamn I will miss that EJ rumble
I was a highschool exchange student back in 2011 when I took a photo right by that exact "Welcome to Wisconsin" sign at 14:20 !
This was a flash back I wasn't expecting for sure!
Nice!
I just picked up a 2013 sti with 50k miles 2 weeks ago, I’ve been looking for one for so long and finally bought one! I love the car and I’m excited to put more money in the car
Just picked up my first Subaru. 2017 STi Limited in White with no sunroof with Harmon Kardon. Loving the car so far!!
I hope to own a Subaru one day
The only thing we can conclude by this video is short ben is loaded af the f150, Rx 7, the civic and the sti . What a bad-ass
All the youtubers I watch are getting sti's and it makes building mine alongside you guys so much more enjoyable!
That STI is just so GOOD! ♥
Dude, you're an inspiration for how I want to live life.
Finally!!! I'm so excited so see ben driving another subaru on the channel,I really missed the subaru content but now I've got a reason to smile cause I've always known ben to be a subaru guy at heart and it's the reason I found this channel..can't wait for more subaru content🔥🔥
Welcome back to the Subaru family! I never left(started this journey in 1997), I've got, eh, seven of them right now, but two of them are spareparts. If you haven't test it on a track, I recommend, it's the best place to know your car. Done it severals time, even made it through Nürburgring in 2018, with my gen 1 Legacy Turbo. Good luck with your new Subaru!
So excited to see you back in a Subaru! I’ve had my WRX for 5 years now and it’s amazing on road trips with the higher MPG!
Can’t wait to see what you have in store for the STI!
In the first 10 minutes are filled with such beautiful driving roads in this country. Man I definitely gotta visit some of these scenic spots, cons of living in a big city.
