We've interviewed Jermaine a bunch of times before actually! Check out our video on Tuning and also our Ultimate Subaru video. He's also tuned both the Evo and the Forester, so he appears in both those videos.
Bought my 06 STI brand new in Feb 06. Never modified at all, just flipped 103000 miles. I've done a slew of maintenance and items that have gone bad with age but drivetrain and such have never skipped a beat. Just when I think about modifying it I realize how much I enjoy the reliability and fun that the car gives me in it's stock form, and how much money I've saved by not going the modified route. I love seeing all the modified ones though when done correctly.
This is pretty cool. I’ve never left a TH-cam comment but I’ve had my car built by Andrewtech and tuned by Jermaine. Never had a problem with it, even driving it over the Rockies. Oh yeah, it made 360 whp on a stock motor and trans. These guys are the real deal.
As someone who has been modifying and tuning Subarus since 1999, I can say the aftermarket has come a loooooooooong way from importing everything from Japan.
I haven't had any issues with my 2017 WRX in 3 years of daily use, just upgraded to stage 2 and now this video has me thinking I'm driving a ticking time bomb.
Very well done ! And as an older car guy (almost pushing 50) driving my 3rd Subie (currently a 2019 STI) you have stated many things I have been trying to "preach" to the young'uns since I got my first Subie 10 years ago ! Thank You.
What other Japanese turbo car still lives up to the hype of the 90s? The Mk V Supra is great, but Toyota is so departed from providing a driver's car that BMW had to make it for them. GTR came back in amazing form, but quickly spiraled off in price into 6 figure unobtainium. Beyond those basic flaws, we have the lack of manual transmission option, vague electronic assist steering, and all the other electronic assists that take away feeling and precise control.
Notice the bug,blob,hawk-eye models get the most love here...The newer cars are behemoths. I know Subaru is always reaching for the high crash ratings but the impreza seems like its a a full size car nowadays.
Guys you're brilliant. I'm a UK (england) guy and we have no videos on after market subaru tuning garages. It's either they dont advertise or its because we dont have such a big following here. I'm in my mid 50's and just bought a diesel 2011 forester (manual) with 90k miles on. I love it. Not going for any mods apart from starting the wheels up and a new set of tyres before winter arrives. You guys should bring your expertise to uk. We need some enthusiasts here. Keep up your brilliant vlogs.
As a Subaru technician, I absolutely love this video. Well put together, straight to the facts and the people being interviewed are knowledgable about their craft. I build Subaru engines and transmissions for a living, I can always tell when someone is full of fluff. Also, I would point out that Advance is my go-to parts store, as well as many other Subaru techs that I know, primarily because of the availability of common and not-so-common Subaru parts and the general shopping experience. Good shit guys, let's see some more content like this!
Just picked up my first turbo car a couple days ago! A pretty decently clean 04 wrx wagon! Black on black with momo interior.. Super excited. I've been looking at them for years now biding my time for the right deal and it finally happened. Thanks for this video it points me in a better direction for the build.
This is essential information for all Subaru owners! It’s awesome, congrats on this new idea! And I’m not even a Subaru owner, would love it if you would do something similiar for the Focus ST platform.
I love my 02 WRX Bugeye Wagon with factory leather.... just rebuilt her to factory OEM spec. As she made it 170K no problems, all stock powertrain, until the radiator drain petcock failed and she cooked headed down the freeway. So she just got a heart reconstruction!!! Now that her internals are all completely fresh, I will get her smogged (CA sucks) and then likely open up the exhaust and see how she does.
This video was a BIG help! I JUST got into the STI family today, and now I know what I should be looking for. Whats even better is AndrewTech is right in my back yard, and i'll def be calling them this week!!

Excellent video. Looking forward to more of The Aftermarket. As a Subaru fanboy, I appreciate seeing some experts talking critically about the pros and cons of these cars. I love them but know they're not perfect. If you understand the limitations and weak spots, you can have a great experience with a turbo Subaru.

Great video, well worth the 2 week wait. Also great since I recently bought a 2016 WRX for daily and have only gone with a Stage2+ protune. This video adds to my confidence that I bought the right engine/transmission for a reliable daily.
@@bille7585 Essentially no different for commuting. With increasing boost, you'll be consuming more fuel when in boost. But for tame driving, it remains the same as stock. I have 105k miles on the clock and average 29mpg with a decent mix of city/highway and spirited mountain roads.
@Lil Kabob because you lose to them? Lol. I know there are a bazillion LS swaps out there, and everyone has swapped them into every goddamn thing. But you really know why? Because you can make TWICE the hp for the money. It's that simple. I have both. I love my Subie, but I f@$%ing hate it too. The LS will always be more solid and I havent done hardly anything to it.
The stock STI trans can definitely handle power, local shop's car is making about 1000whp on race gas and ~750-800 wtq, takes hard launches and drag runs all day no problem.
It’s great showing up to a track day and being one of maybe 3 Subaru’s at the track. Sadly don’t see many Subaru’s at track days as it’s very expensive to maintain a track built Subaru... this video is helpful though!
What's not attainable about a older subaru? A good decent 06-10 wrx sti can be had for 5-15k. While a 25 year old Nissan pos will cost cost over 5k. Then you still might have to throw in another 5-10k fixing it up. So it will run some what dependable.
Great work guys and very helpful information for owners wanting a bit more out of their car! I’d buy another at the drop of a hat but being practical atm! I had a stock 04 Sti with up/down pipes upgraded. Decat exhaust + fmic + ind kit+ remap. 360 bhp and similar torque. 😃
You should try the RVS triboceramic coating. I've used it successfully for years. It restores engine compression and reduces friction by coating all metal to metal friction surfaces with a ceramic compound while you drive the car normally. I've fixed automatic gearboxes and noisy power steering pumps with it... I've treated 5 of my petrol and diesel powered Mercedeses, one Jeep (Commander CRD) and my 06 Forester XT with it.
@@juanarroyo465 Nothing that i know of, ive used T6 in my motorcycles and ATVs for years. When i bought a 04FXT that was my go to oil, i hit 230k abusing that poor EJ. i finally suffered ringland failure one night having way to much fun. when i tore the block down, i was impressed at how much it protected the internals form wear and tear, they looked perfect. Since its meant to be used in a turbo diesel engine,(pretty demanding conditions for oil) it does its job very well in N/A and turbo gasoline engines, plus its cheap.
Very informative guys. Just bought 2 Subaru Legacy Gt Limited a month ago. The 2000 LGT which i LOVE. 220,000 AMAZING! The other is 2009 LGT with 230,000 and hoping the engine didn't seize. @@R1Armadill0 Rumble vs Reliability 😂 It is part of the problem. Everyone wants to slap on an intake/exhaust/blow off valve so they can have cool noises but don't bother tuning it correctly. Also 2015+ WRX owners don't get a choice, no rumble for them lol
@@zachknee9858 I don't need too because I know already what is on it. 400whp is acheivable, but 350wtq is the limit. Rods are weak sure but stock block 400 whp is acheivable.
Had a 2014 hatch I bought at 23k miles, added a full catless exhaust Cobb intake and a protune for 315 whp and 315 ft lb tq, at 34k miles motor blew. Theres a reason Subaru had a lawsuit against them for the ringlands. I loved that car too, favorite one ive had. Couldnt trust it after that motor blew tho and called it quits on the Subis
Watching this made me want to buy a subie now.. I love the care and culture behind the car and I think becoming part of that community would be so nice... but I also want a Q50 because they are a little more unique. what a tough decision.
As a Subaru Technician up in the frigid north of Canada I would like to share a bit of my experience here. Thus things I ran into that caused failures were often linked to oil change and other service intervals that were quite frankly that apart. Also oil weight and viscosity choices and how you drive your car are major factors. So some people think you can go 10-20k between oil changes...... If your posting your car into the upper RPM range ion the regular you should be 😗 Changng oil every 5k or 3000mi. This will avoid the fuel contamination from the rich fueling of the system. Running vehicles rich will wash down cylinder walls and over time get into your oil.......fuel is a cleaner not a lubricator making this an obvious and preventable issue. Also use factor filters or high quality aftermarket only... Cheap ones will go into by-pass quickly and then your oil isn't being filtered at all. So people in colder climates.....if you start your car and rev it up right after a cold start..ie engine coolant is not in the middle of the guage or operating temperature.....you will cause accelerated wear induce your engine. Let your cars warm up before any spirited driving. I also tagged my own oil viscosity to a 5w40 instead of 5w30.....I find the ticker oil stays in the top end better and less oil is burned off. Just a few advice pieces from the guy who sees your cars at the service shop

Because you can make TWICE the hp for the money. It's that simple. I have both. I love my Subie, but I f@$%ing hate it too. The LS will always be more solid and I havent done hardly anything to it.
One of the best Subaru videos I have ever seen. Very honest and technical love it. Loved the trans gear comparison
Love the series idea! Would be fun to see an episode about the VW/Audi 2.0T engine cars.
300whp tuned ej207 bugeye with PPG 5 spd, it always puts a smile on my face (when it’s working) :)
Cali WRX It isn’t expensive if you do it the right away and take care of the car.
Can you guys do these for like all “attainable” cars (fords, chevys, nissans) and weirder stuff (volvos, saabs, diesels)
Love what you guys do
What's not attainable about a older subaru? A good decent 06-10 wrx sti can be had for 5-15k. While a 25 year old Nissan pos will cost cost over 5k. Then you still might have to throw in another 5-10k fixing it up. So it will run some what dependable.
GREAT SÉRIE IDEA. I just bought a 07 Wagon WRX so it couldn't have a better timing. Thanks.
Keep doing what you guys are doing the best!
0:43 Jermaine is a Subaru expert. 11:19 Jermaine is off by 1.0:1 on the static compression of the FA20DIT engine. ;)
Bought my first subi 2015 last year and love it.
this is my favorite car, but i know that when North Korea runs out of bombs and they're ganna use this car to the same effect.
Haha
Great work guys and very helpful information for owners wanting a bit more out of their car! I’d buy another at the drop of a hat but being practical atm! I had a stock 04 Sti with up/down pipes upgraded. Decat exhaust + fmic + ind kit+ remap. 360 bhp and similar torque. 😃
Does rainfall become a hazard with those hood exits that runs from the turbo?
No issues at all. Rain will just run down over the intercooler like the air does as intended.
@@krystophm1730 ohh...thanks for the info
Yes, it will rust the turbo and more dangerously the wastegate if not covered.
@@benpalumbo6726 lol... whaaaaat?
@@rite2beararms water causes rust. Is this news? Lol. Water in the dump tube will reach the wastegate and eventually break it
You should try the RVS triboceramic coating.
Getting really into the video.

Ight imma head out
What's bad about rotella? I'm genuinely curious.
This video brought to you by Shell. Never used it or heard of anyone using it except the States.
@@phoenixrising7047 It's pretty popular in the Subaru community even though it's marketed as a diesel car/truck oil.
And its obvious who doesnt know about oil here
Very informative guys. Just bought 2 Subaru Legacy Gt Limited a month ago. The 2000 LGT which i LOVE. 220,000 AMAZING! The other is 2009 LGT with 230,000 and hoping the engine didn't seize. Dont know yet haven't had it diagnosed yet. Went into limp mode 2 miles from where I bought it. Was smoking after it shut off. I have hope for it tho. Thanks for the info.
Why wasn't this in my recommended before I bought my foz lol
Due to how good this episode was, you do know that you guys have to do videos for these popular tuner cars: HONDA: Civic EF/EG/EK/EP&TypeRs (D15, D16, B16,B18,B20,K20/K24, 5&6 spd manual), all Accord Si-R, Euro R (H22,H23, K20,K24, 5&6 sp manual), S2000 (F20C, F22C), NSX incl. R, Type Zero (C30, C32), MITSUBISHI Lancer Evolution 1-10 (4G63, 5&6 sp manual), TOYOTA: Celica GT-4, GT-S (3S-GE, 3S-GTE, 2ZZ-GE, 5&6 sp manual), Altezza (3S-GE (blue/red/black top (BEAMS) 5&6sp manual), SUPRA(isn't it bulletproof everywhere?😁), NISSAN: Skyline R32-34, GT-S, GT-R, VSpec&2 (RB25DET, RB26DETT, 5&6 sp manual) 350Z (VQ35...is this it?, 6sp manual).......add others guys

Always nice to hear professionals talk about their profession.
i wanna see one on mazdaspeed 3s :P
The Speed 3 with the scoop. I hate the older gens without the scoop. 🚮
Bought my WRX new in 2002. Blew my trans at 80K. Had dealer rebuild it then the carrier bearings went. Bought STi 6 speed after that. Best mod to car. When 5 speed trans let go my engine was stock.
Did the low end feel better with the shorter gears?
Honda.....you gotta do Honda my dude's (EDIT Like for Honda to be the next manufacturer)
Lil Kabob VTEC is love bro

Turbo k20!
Lil Kabob 18 min video talking about subaru engine failures.
As a car enthusiast, this series is gold
Can't forget upgrading to an equal length header for power and reliability.
But, but... MA RUMBLE! haha!
@@R1Armadill0 Rumble vs Reliability 😂 It is part of the problem. Everyone wants to slap on an intake/exhaust/blow off valve so they can have cool noises but don't bother tuning it correctly. Also 2015+ WRX owners don't get a choice, no rumble for them lol
love love love my 2005 STi subaru for life
Makes me happy I never bought a subaru kinda. Seems like you gotta do alot of work like building blocks just to get anywhere near 400whp.
The fa motors are a lot better then the ej power wise
@@enzoc3869 you obviously didn't watch the video. Fa has weak rods
@@jonbohn7045 you should read my comment because i'm talking about the fa20
Watching this made me want to buy a subie now.. I love the care and culture behind the car and I think becoming part of that community would be so nice... but I also want a Q50 because they are a little more unique. what a tough decision.
"Subaru enthusiASS" 🤔
Just finding this series. It's incredible.
we need one on HONDAS
