How To Rosin The Bow... PROPERLY!

  • How to rosin the bow! This might seem a rather simple and obvious thing to do, but it seems it isn't as I get tons of messages each day asking why no sound is coming from the bow/violin and 'why do I sound so scratchy'?!
    TIMESTAMPS:
    - To know exactly how to rosin if you have a NEW violin & bow, go to: 3:38
    - If you want to know how to re-rosin your bow, go to: 7:45
    - To see how often I recommend you rosin the bow, go to: 7:00
Below are some rosin links and recommendations.
If the Sartory rosin I use is a little out of your price range, then I have suggested some more wallet-friendly alternatives:
    🇺🇸Rosin Links I recommend for USA🇺🇸:
    1. Hill Dark Rosin: goo.gl/zgeZem
    2. Melos Dark Rosin: goo.gl/lvrHwQ
    3. Hill Light Rosin: goo.gl/2WHqbg
    4. Melos Light Rosin: goo.gl/AkdIW2
    5. **The rosin I'm PERSONALLY USING right now (2021): amzn.to/2I7LFQl
    🇬🇧Rosin Links I recommend for UK🇬🇧:
    1. Salchow Light: goo.gl/jYcnTl
    2. Hill Rosin: goo.gl/NVBM1P
    3. Melos Rosin: goo.gl/Ib9oyC
    4. **The rosin I'm PERSONALLY USING right now (2021). PLEASE NOTE, that I can only find a link to the Peccatte version (dark) which is nice too, but I use the light version (amber/orange one): amzn.to/3dJd48l
The reason I like my Sartory French rosin over everything else, is because you only need to apply very little and little is the key to a nice, good quality, clean and clear tone.
There is minimal dust and it is NOT sticky in anyway like a lot of the others. You get a nice smooth sound and tone and it works very well in all weathers/climates and a variety of bows.
Just don't overdo this rosin to get the best from it. If you rosin your bow once per week, then all you should need is a few swipes up and down the bow to keep it nicely topped up with this rosin.

Hi Alison, I've received my brand new violin today! I'm a beginner, I struggled to apply the rosin at first then I roughed it up a bit, when it is going on to the bow you can feel the bow begin to grip the rosin a bit, when this happens you know you are applying the rosin. After that I could get a sound out of my violin and I began to tune it

You've already convinced me that I need to buy a higher quality bow, and I was counting on buying some new rosin since its doing precisely as you've said, leaving particles all over the place. I've started a restore on an early 20th Century Violin that I purchased, and hope to replace my student violin with it. I really did listen to your reasoning, and believe it will make an a great difference. I saw the courses your offering, and have to get better at my positions; first and so on. Although I see everyone rosin their bow like you do, what I do is hold the rosin stationary, about where the violin strings would be, and move the bow up and down - sort of “bowing on the rosin”. It’s part of my relaxation and preparatory technique prior to practicing. It also lets me monitor my arm and wrist motions to ensure I’m not getting sloppy.

Really? This is always how I have done it. It avoids the over rosining situation which results in too much fallout and scratching with the bow on the strings.
With good quality rosin, there really is no need to rosin each time you play...or applying too much in one go.

@@TheOnlineViolinTutor the last video I watched which was the method I was using was to just pass the rosin up and down the bow 10 times everytime you play. It would also seem I have cheap rosin because I didn't realize it wasn't supposed to be super dusty. I'll be upgrading that soon as well and hopefully have a slightly better sound which will make me want to practice more.

I'm dying to play after weeks of waiting and now two more weeks to get the Sartory) what is your second favorite while I wait for the Sartory? I promise I'll be a good girl and not touch my new bow with the rubbish rosin!
Thanks again for the inspiration and lessons. For now...back to "air violin"

So for me, it was overrated and underwhelming. I tried 2 of their rosins and both were very dusty and gritty. The sound produced was not clean and clear like Sartory rosin is for me.
I just didn't like how my bow performed with it and the sound it created. My playing was not smooth and I felt I had to work harder.
For the price and the waitlist, it was not worth it and overrated in my opinion.
Sartory I find is clean, clear, crisp and smooth with incredibly little fallout. You only need a couple of swipes up and down the bow to replace/replenish and overall, its a really lovely rosin that does its job very well indeed.

The Sartory is going to cost 1/3 my Vangoa electric violin and probably way more than the bow is worth, but I may do it anyways. 🤣

Add more rosin bit by bit until it does. Dont go super mad - add and try some otherwise you'll overload the bow.
