    Small tip: if you place your thumb right over the silver piece at the frog, you can go all the way to the very edge of the frog without chipping it.

    1:36 One can also use the serrated edge of a U.S. quarter (25-cent piece) too. It works every time. 😊 ♫ 🎻

    On a new bow I hold the rosin up to a light to soften it and it sticks much quicker.

    Thank you. I left one of my violas in the US when I went to the UK, and when I came back my viola was in a good state, but my bow wouldn’t make a sound. I have never run across this before so I was wondering what to do. Also the rosin has gone rockhard and gives up nothing. So thank you for your tips.

    Be careful when approaching the metal part of the frog. Hard contact with the rosin can chip and crack the cake.

    I bought new rosin for my bow. Should I remove the previous rosin layer from my bow with a rosin remover or rubbing alcohol before using a new one? They are different brands and kinds.

      No, just play off the old rosin and then add the new one when it’s just about gone.

    Hi Again. Great Video. When I go to your link (the one you use) there are 2 options to that page. 1 is: Sartory Rosin in Octagonal Wood Case and the other is Violin Rosin in Collector Wood Case (Peccatte) from the same link (I'm in the USA)... Are both of these the same Rosin? One is $24.20 and the other is $18.25... I'm not concerned about the price difference. Just what you think is best.

    In the many lessons and videos or yours that I've watched, I've not heard you mention what to do when hair on the bow breaks causing pieces to hang down at each end. I suppose you are going to say just trim the pieces off as close to the end as you can, but I'd rather ask than have regrets.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly that. Just take care when cutting (obviously) as you don’t want to chop of goo strings and refrain from pulling as you don’t want to yank out more by mistake or make them loose inside the fitting.

    Just a comment on "if you put rosin on your bow and still are getting absolutely no sound, ..." When I bought my violin as a 45 year old after having not played since junior high school, I had this problem. It turned out to be because the store I bought the violin from had SPRAYED OIL ON THE STRINGS! I kid you not. I spent the whole rest of the night with alcohol and Kleenex wiping the oil off the strings and the fingerboard, and trying to get it out of the horse hairs of the bow. Eventually, and with a lot of rosin, too, I was able to get sound. The more I played it, the better the sound got, and after a day or two it sounded pretty good for a $160 Chinese instrument.

    Hello I have a question. I just got my violin and I need help putting the bridge . I can't because it doesn't have the little slits on the bridge so the strings will go in and I don't know how to make them . Can you help me ? I have a 4/4 🎻

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could return it to the shop and get another, or take it to a violin luthier. Im afraid I cant help you over the comments section on this, unless you feel confident to place the strings on the bridge equal distance apart. What violin did you get that didnt come with grooves on the bridge?

    Does it matter if I use a cheap rosin?

    • @MrAnderson2845

      Diya Ahmed yes, cheap rosin = poor sound. If the violin is cheap though it wont matter.

    • @sola1814
      @sola1814 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So a student violin doesn’t get a better sound from more expensive rosin? And I can just use the cheap stuff it comes with and it will be the same if I used the more expensive ones?

    • @zane3556
      @zane3556 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sola1814 I would always throw away the cheap rosin that comes with a violin. Usually if you get a good rosin ~$10-30 USD it can make a cheap violin sound loads better and the rosin will last you 5+ years honestly lol, so even a $30 rosin will be very cheap In the long run.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you have re-haired with good and proper real hair like blue mongolian, then yes, just a few minutes, but for the vast majority of people watching this video using cheap synthetic hair, then yes.
      You wouldn't believe the amount of comments I get from people who ask me why there is no sound coming from the bow and its because they dont spend long enough putting rosin in - that, and they are also using cheap rosin.
      So yes, a good 15 mins plus!

      @@TheOnlineViolinTutor The 'cheap synthetic hair' is a myth. It doesn't exist, and hasn't since 'Synhair' left the market place in the 1980's, and that wasn't particularly cheap anyway. In my experience the violin outfits nowadays ALL use real horse tail hair. The tutor is using FAR too much rosin and has not cleaned the bow hair before initially attempting to rosin the bow. A freshly rehaired, or a new bow, from a reputable shop must have a coat of 'base rosin' on it. Then you will only need a couple of wipes on even a new rosin block to make it play. If it doesn't, take it back! Otherwise the rosin that the hair just can't accommodate will simply spray all over the poor violin and up your nose - neither a particularly nice outcome.
