How To Tune Your Violin... PROPERLY!

  • How to tune your violin.
    I talk about tuning with the 4 fine tuners, resetting your fine tuners if they have gone too far in or out, then tuning with a digital tuner, and then tuning in 5ths.
    🇺🇸D'Addario tuner USA link 🇺🇸: amzn.to/3jH0KXQ
    🇬🇧D'Addario tuner UK link 🇬🇧: amzn.to/31WylGS
    PLEASE NOTE: there are other tuners, but most (cheaper ones) are just not accurate enough and thats what you need to pay for. That, plus the positining of the tuner, which you need to watch out for.
    Hope that helps.

    My violin course is the only course available on the internet like it.
    It 100% GUARANTEES to take you from a complete beginner to an accomplished intermediate level! I realise this is a bold statement, but it's tried and tested and I fully stand by it.
    All the lessons come with downloadable only books as well as videos (linked in the books) which makes it the only interactive course of its kind out there!

    RECOMMENDED VIOLINS:
    Fiddlerman violins are the only violins I currently recommend. You can choose the violin to suite you depending on your budget. Remember the cheaper you go (buying rubbish from Amazon for example), the worse the violin will be (garbage most likely) and the HARDER it will be to learn - which is why Fiddlerman violins are an excellent beginners choice:

    Listen to the undulations a 5th apart for perfect harmony of notes. Faster undulations are sharp, slower undulations are flat. No undulations when harmony is achieved. Listen carefully. This is why many violins have only one fine tuner. One string in tune is all that is required to tune well. Thank you for your commitment and lessons.

    I just got my violin today and have been trying to tune it. So far I got all of the strings except the A to sound good. One tuner app says I'm hitting A but another tuner app says im low. And it just sounds terrible. I was thinking it needed more rosin so I added more and all of the other strings sound lovely. The A string just sounds off even when it says its hitting A. I'm not sure what could be wrong. Maybe the part of the bow that hits the A string most needs more rosin? I have a headache now from trying to tune for the past hour 🤣😅 so I think I'm going to call it a day and hopefully can get that string tuned tomorrow so I can start the open string exercises. If not I might just take it to a professional. Any suggestions would be great!

    This was exceptionally helpful for me, Alison. Yes, I sure could hear the "good clash" harmony of the strings (especially A/D and A/E). This must be a hard concept to explain to beginners but I understood what you said and what you demonstrated. You do not sound mad nor crazy! 😂 Well, the entire video is brilliant. I love learning from you because you just get down to business and never add "fluffy" information (I don't like fluff). Thank you.

    On another note, fine tuners actually help keep the tension distrubution before and after the bridge a bit more even; this in turn helps reduce the chance of a bridge collapse and the resultant sound post collapse

    • @tak-el-uc
      @tak-el-uc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as a tuner is a chromatic tuner it should work for any instrument. The majority of tuners are chromatic but not all, so you do want to make sure you are buying a chromatic tuner. However, as Alison said clipping a tuner to a violin is not as easy as attaching one to a guitar. Guitars almost universally (not headless) have a headstock to clip a tuner on to. If you don't have a tuner already, get the Daddario violin tuner she is demonstrating. You will be happy with it.

    My violin teacher was always tuning the violin for me. ( I guess that is half her fault and half mine - she's great by the way and has taught me a lot about the violin). I have been playing for almost 12 years now and I have started tuning my violin on my own about two years ago. I am playing in orchestras and stuff and I am finding it very difficult to tune and have the same intonation with the others.
    I don't know what to do. Sometimes I practise by myself just tuning open strings but when I am having a rehearsal I don't believe in myself and I am not sure about tuning.
    Do you have any advise?😅❤
    Sorry for the large text🥰

  • @ProdigiousMusician
    @ProdigiousMusician 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Alison, on the video timer position 17:14, you have a spelling error. The last two words, "BAS WELL" but I think you meant it to read as, AS WELL. In addition, I understand that each violin string is tuned to a perfect 5th apart. Therefore, starting from the lowest String of G will have an interval of one 5th apart which means the pitch of the adjacent string would need to be tuned to a 5th for D string, and so on. When the violin strings do not sound homonymous together for a perfect 5th interval, the pitches of 5ths are incorrectly in tune with each other - [this is known as a 'beating sound'] when hearing two stings sounding not absolutely together. You will get a dissonant sound when two adjacent strings been bowed together.
