  • Do you hit other strings when you play the violin? Do you find it frustrating that you do this? Do you want to be able to just hit the one string you intend on?
    This video gives you 6 reasons and solutions as to why you might be hitting other strings and what you can do to solve the issue.
    TIME STAMPS:
    1. Angle of the bow - 4:26
    2. Too much rosin - 8:16
    3. Posture - 11:18
    4. Angle of the bridge - 13:48
    5. Wrist Angle - 17:17
    6. The violin itself - 19:32

    So true about angle of the bridge. It’s almost impossible to play notes on D string and not hit the A string on my stentor 2. I have no luthier in my area so I may have to send out my bridge or learn to shave it myself.

    Great video.This is the first video I've seen address this topic on you tube.I used to have an on going problem with hitting adjacent strings when playing single strings,but once I got a professionally fitted bridge with the right curve ,things vastly improved. My violin is intermediate to professional quality. I also increased the string spacing just a tad at the bridge,which made a huge difference. I play a lot of jazz & improvisational music, so it really cleaned up my solos. Student instruments should definitely have bridges cut with the proper curve.I think this would improve playing & increase progress by the student. Great job!

    Thank you Allison.
    I’ve noticed that areas of my bow did not have enough rosin and caused my play to be quite squeaky.
    Having an inexpensive Mendini by Cecilio student violin, encouraged me to fearlessly adjust it. Twice I have removed all the pegs and “soaped” them to prevent pegs from slipping out of tune.
    Will soon give this violin back to granddaughter and I will look at Cecillio 600 violin.
    P.S. I have learned so much from you in such a short time and getting pretty good I think.

    I have question about bowing. On some of the forums, there are interesting comments on using all of the bow hairs, i.e. the flat, vs. a tilt of the bow wherein only a fraction of the hairs are being used, such as 45% on the down bow and 60% on the up bow or vice versa. Do you have a preference we should concentrate on while developing our bowing technique? I've watched some of the other artists besides yourself and notice that they (and you) appear to tilt the bow where you are not using the flat of the bow's hair ribbon all the time.

    I am getting better at not hitting other strings with practice but I still do it occasionally every once a while (esp. when I am not focusing enough I guess). But what is considered a cheap violin? I have a violin on rent and it is worth around $1000 if i buy it. Will it be considered a cheap violin? Well, the rosin also came along with it and I been applying it on the bow like a engine lubricant! I guess I need to cut down the amount I apply. Also, I am going to see if the music shop has a better quality rosin.

    So the course your spoke about, is it all online and self-learning? Or are there (online) sessions with you? I am wondering how students find solutions that they encounter during the course. Advice. Btw you make all violin things seem so simple and I am like "how can she do that? that easily!". :-)

    Have an issue with scratching noises when I am pressing on the strings, my fat old fingers press on the next string. Do you have a video on different ways to hold the violin so my fingers aren’t pressing the wrong string at the same time they’re pressing the correct string? Or any advice at all?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do mention this in the video. Only matters where the bow is. If your. hitting other strings, its your bow you need to correct and address.

    • @Julia94549
      @Julia94549 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might consider taking your violin to your luthier, and having the string height and spacing at the nut checked. I was doing that on one of those cheaper beginner violins. It turned out it wasn't my bowing at all, but the strings were set to closely to each other at the nut plus the string height at the nut was too high. The problem could also be with string height at the end of the fingerboard as well.

    Hi! I have a question. Do you know why I happen to hit other strings only when im doing martele? Could it be because my arm level shifted or that I could have pressed too much?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need to make sure your bow and bow arm are at the correct level to isolate each string.

      Take your violin to the luthier, and have the string height and spacing at the nut checked. If you're not hitting other strings while playing the open strings, it's not your bowing that is the problem.

    I have two questions that I have not come across answers to yet. #1. No one ever talks about the other angle of the bow, that is, the short plane across the strings - for instance, should the bow be tilted so the the bow hairs farthest from your head are contacting the strings? Should it be flat, i.e. almost all the bow hair contacts the strings or more of the hair closest to your head. Do you get what I mean?
    #2. I practice with a metal mute so that my wife doesn’t kick me out of the house, but I find when I can practice without the mute, and I can finally hear more of the tone, I feel I am almost set back and have to relearn the piece when I hear how it really sounds. Should I practice without it? But I really can’t because then I would get almost no practice time. (We are both at home due to COVID restrictions.) 🙁 Any thoughts on that? Thanks in advance!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      1. I covered that exact topic in depth in a video a while ago: th-cam.com/video/Tmt93nCQNtQ/w-d-xo.html
      2. Your right with the mute - its never a good idea to play with one on ideally. Short of a divorce, I have no pearls of wisdom to say on that....lol🤣🤣🤣

      Sounds like it could be the angle of your bridge. Have a luthier check it. It might also be string spacing or height at the nut. Sounds more like a bridge angle issue though.

      Have your string heights checked by a luthier. Your bridge could be too high. At the end of the fingerboard, your e string should only be about 2.5mm above the fingerboard, and your g string should only be about 5.5mm above the fingerboard.

    Rather than buying a more expensive instrument or a cheaper one and getting a new bridge fitted for £200 I think it would make more sense to go and rent a decent quality violin from a good luthier which might cost like £30-£40 a month. This way the person could get a feel for wether the violin is the right instrument for them and then later if they like it they could go and spend however much they want on a decent student instrument.
