    Very important notice (forgot to mention): Never touch your the bow hair with your fingers. The grease/oil on your fingers will make that part of the bowhair not be able to become as sticky when rosin is applied to it, which will make the bow not create a sound at that part of the bow. Touching the bowhair will also make that part of the hair attract dirt much more quickly, this is a common reason for the fact that the part around the frog often becomes dark.

      Touching the bow hair was the No 1 biggest mistake I made as a beginner. I figured, completely wrongly, that as a beginner it wouldn't matter. It DOES matter. I have Mediterranean olive skin, and I have olive oil with my food, and touching the bow even slightly ruins how well it plays. I also have to take care not to pluck the strings anywhere that I will bow because oils can get to the bow via the strings. Once I stopped ever getting oil on the bow, my sound quality immediately became reliable, which is wonderful.

    I'm 64, and my first and new Yamaha SV-200 electric violin cametoday. It is blue! I rosined my bow, and it was fun. I actually did pretty good, and played your twinkle twinkle, little star song from one of you othe videos. I checked it against my piano, so I was happy it came tuned, but i love tuning my guitars. My piano has perfect pitch. Love your videos.

Just rosined my bow and WOW. THANK YOU, that made everything so much clearer. Yes...I'm a recently learning but...you help was greatly appreciated.

    Do you have to clean the bow hair when changing rosin types such as going from dark to light? Or do you just start using the new rosin?

    Hello. Just started learning to play the violin and your content is fantastic in helping me learn on my journey. I do have a couple of questions: One part of my bow sounds scratchy while the rest sounds smooth. I suspect that I have too much rosin in that section. And my strings also have quite a bit of rosin on them as well. How would I get the rosin off of my bow and my strings? Do I just keep playing or do I have to use a cleaner of some sort?

    • @Violinspiration
      @Violinspiration  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can simply wipe it off with a cloth. Here is an article I wrote all about violin bow rosin that you might find useful. violinspiration.com/how-to-rosin-a-bow-useful-tips-about-violin-rosin/

    • @JasonakaBoop
      @JasonakaBoop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Violinspiration I tried with a microfiber cloth for like 10 minutes and it didn't work. I finally just grabbed a tiny amount of varnish cleaner and rubbed the strings with that. Worked like a charm. Your article had a lot of extremely important information and I appreciate it.

  • @Paudeli1
    @Paudeli1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good explanations, thanks! One question: if you have too much rosin on your bow, can you wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth? I liked when you said that after 7-8 hours of playing add the rosin. Good tip! BTW, I'm a beginner and my E string sounds terrible, scratchy or something. Maybe the bow is too tight/loose, I press too hard/weak, too much rosin etc. Try to learn:)

    • @Breanna.L
      @Breanna.L 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it has a scratchy sound, you could be pressing the bow down too hard or light. Try to keep a steady grip. Another reason, you are playing to close to the bridge or the board. Try to keep you bow in the middle of the two parts. Hopes that helps! Good luck! Don’t give it up. 😀

    • @arne5451
      @arne5451 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Breanna.L Thanks! I think I press the bow too much or too less. And the gripping is difficult for me. The corona virus has prevented me to have a violin teacher. That's the problem.

    • @Breanna.L
      @Breanna.L 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sinuhe I’m so sorry about that! Don’t give up. She has a video on the bow grip I believe. Something that works for me is when I get frustrated with a piece and I start to get tense I will shake my hands out and “blow” bubbles through my nose to keep breathing evenly and help with the pressure. Or I’ll just play scales a couple of times and my grip will improve greatly over the “break”. I’m definitely no expert 😜 Don’t give up! You got this!

    Great tutorial as always ❤
    A question for you.
    I did apply the rosin as explained, after observing for few days it turns out that few initial strokes are warm and smooth. But after 10-15 minutes of play the sound becomes scratchy and I can feel it while playing. I watched some other tutor videos and they too say to rosin once in 5-6 hours of playing, as a general rule.
    So what's going on here, sound becoming scratchy after 10-15 min? (I tried applying higher quantity as well. Default Hidersine rosin which came with the 🎻 as well as Daddario Light).

    • @Violinspiration
      @Violinspiration  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There can be a few reasons for it. Maybe there is already too much of rosin build-up on your strings? Please observe it and remove the rosin from strings with a dry cloth. Or, try to adjust the bow pressure and speed while you play - maybe you tend to press the bow a bit more after 10-15 min of playing?
      I hope it helps :)

    • @EnKay0000
      @EnKay0000 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Violinspiration Hey, really appreciate you taking time out to respond ❤️
      As I kept reading more about rosin it occurred to me that it might be Light vs Dark rosin, and it was!
      Both different brands Light rosins (Hidersine & Daddario) gave the problem described in the original messag (more dust off with D'addario).
      So I tried Hidersine Dark 6V and it worked perfectly. The bow's still not scratchy after 5.5 hours of play, and the E string is not screechy as earlier. This information could be useful to others now!
      Bow pressure was okay, not more.
      Thanks!

    Are my hairs on bow supposed to touch the bow where there’s a slight bend? Yours don’t touch and I was wondering what was wrong with mine. It’s a new one

    • @Violinspiration
      @Violinspiration  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You have to tighten the hair using the screw on the end. The hair should not touch the bow when you play, but instead you should be able to run a regular size pencil through the space between the stick and the hair, and have it just slightly graze both at the most narrow part. But be able to slide through freely. Does that make sense?😀

      You may simply need more rosin. New bows always need rosin. The rosin allows friction to grip the string as you bow this will cause the string to vibrate and thus create sound.
