If I am getting into Sports photography is it worth that extra money to get the R6 Mark ii over the R8 to get the mechanical shutter instead of just the electronic? I am upgrading from a Canon Rebel, so either of these will be much better than that. Just curious on your thoughts on that for sports?
Do you need IBIS? Probably not, because you will likely need to have quite fast shutter speeds for sports, and most of Canon's lenses already have built-in IS. Full mechanical shutter would not matter for sports. It's only if you need to shoot with fast lenses (for bokeh) at very fast shutter speeds (over 1/2000 or 1/4000th of sec), as using "first electronic" can cause some artifacts in the bokeh at those shutter speeds. Other than this, what you get with the R6 is a better/larger battery and dual SD card slots. It's up to you whether you think that is worth another $1000 or not.
@@leonardlevine1254 it all depends on the sport and the approach of shooting. The electronic shutter can be a problem for some sports cause of the banding. In that case R6 is a better choice for sure.
I use my R5 and R6 for sports, I’m a red bull photographer so I do different sports. And it is fine to use electronical shutter for most of the sports. But in some cases it could produce banding. Golf, tennis where could influence the image a bit. Also in electronic shutter mode you shoot 12 bit. So that could be a problem if you wanna really push the files.
@@TomislavMoze I'm at a University doing sports photography for them so I'll be doing golf, tennis, baseball, and softball. All the other sports as well, but I'm only really worried about the banding with those sports. Probably better just stick with the R6 mark ii to be safe.
@@brandonhightower1634 I agree, or even the orginal R6 if you are on the budget. I did a whole video why I switched form R6 to R6mk2 on my channel maybe that helps.
I agree, R8 is probably a bigger deal for Canon than R6 ii, which I just bought. This is an excellent camera to start with FF. A $1000 put in a better lens will give much better quality photos than a better body would do, especially when the sensor and AF are the same.
Yup, lens is way important than the body.. ibis is also a plus for both lens and body.. the digital IS on the r8 crops the image, so there goes that full frame idea, also when paning left to right quickly you get that wobbly warp on the side when shooting video.
@@sergeyzakharov7326 if you insist 4k60 uncropped is a must, you need to look at Z9 in Nikon land, or Sony a7siii at a minimum. How is the cheapest full frame having it not insane? The list goes on. £1700 R8 is terrible value. Ignoring all discounts, cashbacks and offers, and going by current RRP prices from the biggest dealerships in the UK (Jessops, WEX and ParkCameras) lets see how good it is at this price point. Hi, first time seeing your work, I was researching the Canon R50 and found you. TERRIFIC content, very helpful, concise and well presented, thank you for making this!
I currently have the EOS RP and was thinking of getting the R8. I am in no way a professional I am an average joe taking photos at disneyland and so on. Would it be an upgrade in your opinion? And Would you upgraded from the RP? TIA
Hi Jarred, may I know wheter the extension grip of RP can be use for R8? I saw in your video that the R8 is having an extension grip, so I wonder whether it is the same RP grip. Thanks!
Jared, please do a sports photography test för the R8 comparing it with the R7 and R6. I'm stuck deciding between the R7 or R6, and this could be a perfect match between these two. The things I am mostly worried about is the mechanical shutter on the R8, the warping with the electronic shutter for sports is just unacceptable for my taste. The other thing is the lack of IBIS on the R8, how big is the difference without it in real world usage compared to the R7 and R6's IBIS. Thanks in advance!
I think you already answered your own questions! To make sure you don't have that warping, you'll need a mechanical shutter. The R6 mkii is likely the solution for you.
@@codynpatterson Of course the R6 is the best solution, but it's also a $1000 more. The question is still, is it $1000 better, or can I compromise the disadvantage of the cheaper bodys. Without real life testing and comparing there is no way to be sure.

Hmmm, after watching some other reviews I couldn’t find a reason for adding the R8 to my gear bag, but now after watching your review and highlighting some other things they didn’t or perhaps didn’t explain in detail I’m think I might have a need to add this to my bag of tricks! 😊 Thanks!
So basically compared to the Z5, if you need the best AF the R8 smokes it. However, the Z5 still has IBIS so it’s probably better for more static shots?
Canon are unlikely to do it. They already have some pro sports shooters using the Mark 1 R6 instead of the R3 or 1dx3. They want pros/enthusiasts to buy the R6,R5,R3 or (when it comes) R1. Those cameras [will] have vertical grip option or built-in, but they are not cheap. When Canon becomes serious about competition it will perhaps be too late. Maybe then they will release some much desired equipment, for example the RF70-200 f2.8 (or even other L telephotos) with a black rather than steal-me white option. They already brought back eye control focus from the EOS 3, much improved too. The lens line up is going to take some time though imo. It is missing the lighter (than f1.2) ~f1.4 primes and f4 zooms that most non-full timers might be interested in, and their cheaper stuff e.g. 8f f2 lacks the quality and build of the better lenses in the L or GM range. In fact, there's not a single RF lens that I want (over EF equivalent) in my pack yet because my ideal line up is 20 f2.8L, 35 f1.4L and 85 f1.4 L, and all must weight less than 800g and be less than 4 inches long (or might as well use EF). If I moved to Sony I could buy the lenses I want. The only thing that is putting me off is Sony bodies don't feel as nice in my hand, and the menu system has a font that makes it harder to read and get used to.
Just ordered this camera to upgrade from the RP. Love the video, but I wouldn’t told that guy to remove that whole laptop he had in his back pocket 😂 working on doing photos with people soon and moving away from landscape for a bit so hopefully the R8 will work well for me.
I live in the Charleston area and love shooting at Magnolia Plantation. I have an annual membership and go often. The old rice field is a great place to get shots of wading birds, eagles, and gators. I had to laugh at the deer and pig. They used to have a food dispenser that you could get a small amount of food to give to the critters. They had to stop because they were being overfed. Unfortunately, they also have learned to associate people with food handouts and can still get pretty aggressive looking for food. My daughter had a deer try and eat part of her camera bag. At least it wasn't one of the gators.
I like how your pages of notes are entirely highlighten (and not just some words or phrases) :D Other than that, my only rant is that they didn't add the joystick to the R8 (though the upper low-end APS-C R10 has it), but it's understandable, as the level of convenience that that device brings can change the perception of the camera.
The R6 (not mk2) is pretty much the same price as this R8 now in the UK. In my opinion the R6 is also a better and more professional camera. I am looking on buying. Any reason you'd buy the R8 over the R6? The R8 is newer but doesn't seem as good after watching this video and looking at specs. Cheers :)
I think R8 is a better choice only if you do a lot of video. R6 is a beast of a camera. Been using since the release and was really happy with it. I did switch to the mk2 just cause I do a lot of video. But for photography it is almost the same. R8 and R6mk2 have a slightly better af

I'm a hobbyist. I'm planning to upgrade from 77d to R7 but with the intro of R8 I'm so confused. More features of R7 like IBIS, dual card slot vs R8 full frame. My current lens are Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 and Tamron 35mm f1.4.
I have the R5 and R6, this R8 is an EXCELLENT choice for anyone that cant or doesn't want to spend the money on the others. The image quality is excellent.
quick question ... I am just getting back into photography and I think the R8 is a perfect start, however ... I've always loved sigma lenses. Have you done a review on the Sigma FP or FP L?
Canon are getting it so right lately. The only issue Canon ever really had was lagging Sony on their mirrorless range. Canon was always top-dog with lens availability and overall usability (an underrated item). Currently I'm OK with my 6D and M50 but the amazing eye-detect focus may make me upgrade, for portrait work. It means you can just chat to the subject, taking photos, without even looking at your camera.
I just sold my RP I needed a bit more this would’ve been perfect though lol these are dope. That R50 mode is probably for someone who wants to learn manual but not really sure where to start.
So should I go for the R8 or buy the Canon R from my friend for $500 or just get the R5 as my original plan once my tax return comes in March. I shoot portraits outdoor/indoor , Events parties , weddings. And a lot of action events. Sport games car racing etc
GREAT Video! Thanks! I shoot with the Canon R5. I still have my 5D Mark IV as my backup, so I still need to hang on to all my EF lenses. After watching your R8 review, I am thinking maybe I should get the R8 as my backup camera instead of buying another R5 as a backup. What do you think? I am only nervous about having only one memory slot. But if the R8 is my backup camera in the event, the R5 fails it's probably worth the risk. And the R8 takes up so little space!! What do you think?
I shoot basketball, portraits (studio) and events. I currently have a Canon 77d and was looking to upgrade to the R6 (I cannot afford the R6 II). Now that I see the R8, I think it makes more sense than the R6, am I wrong? I wouldn't use IBS because I shoot at 1/1000 for basketball and otherwise I use studio lights.
Agreed. There's nothing the R50, R10 or R7 offer to prompt me to switch, when price, weight, features and lenses (especially 3rd party M mount support!) are considered.
I don't think I ever had as much fun with a camera as I did with my M6 II, used primarily for birds and wildlife along with the Sigma 150-600C and Tamron 100-400 Di VC. But I recently upgraded to the R7 with the R 100-500. While I hesitated over the price, there is no comparison. The R7 subject tracking is excellent, especially the bird eye autofocus. And the Canon RF lens outperforms the third party lenses in weight, AF responsiveness, image stabilization, and image quality. If you can manage the price, it's worth it.
I have a bunch of M mount lenses for my M50 for travel and hiking. Why would Canon abandon this line and force us to move to their RF line? The M series were very much capable. I have taken some of my best landscape pictures because of its portability and size. I would hate to carry a heavier camera on a 3 day backpacking trip.
Dear Jared, I see you mention the extension grip for the R8. Is that the same extension grip as for the RP ? Canon EG-E1 Extension Grip ? If so, could you please verify if the Neewer or Vello battery grip for RP is compatible for the R8 ? That would be awesome, as it seems for now Canon does not offer a battery grip ( 4 years later they still don't for the RP ). Thanks for your time.
Jared, you are mistaken, while the R8 has the MENU item for "Tap to select Subject to detect" and you stated the R6 mkii does not... this isn't accurate. The R6mkii can set and use the "Touch & drag AF settings" to ON and use the screen OR you can use the Joystick to Jump from subject to subject automatically without having another menu item.... it just WORKS TWO ways in the R6mkii.
I would love to make the switch but wont even consider it until they open up to 3rd party lenses. My Sony A7IV is fantastic and the lens options are more than i would ever need as an enthusiast. True professionals, Canon all the way, you cant deny how they are killing it these days.
Hi Jared, thx for this video! But is it true that the EOS R8 shoot in 14bit even in 20fps mode? I have an EOS R6 Mark II and I believe R6m2 only shoot in 12bit when it set on electronic shutter.
I was waiting for this R50 as a replacement for my M50 so I could share lenses with my R6. I don't know what I was expecting but I'm pretty disappointed with what we got. Might just pick up an RP instead.

I did a whole video why I switched form R6 to R6mk2 on my channel maybe that helps.
do you prefer a v90 to use with the R8 or will a v60 work?
I agree, R8 is probably a bigger deal for Canon than R6 ii, which I just bought. This is an excellent camera to start with FF. A $1000 put in a better lens will give much better quality photos than a better body would do, especially when the sensor and AF are the same.
Yup, lens is way important than the body.. ibis is also a plus for both lens and body.. the digital IS on the r8 crops the image, so there goes that full frame idea, also when paning left to right quickly you get that wobbly warp on the side when shooting video.
I have an RP, financially sound like the R8 is the one for me. Great job with the specs
It there a battery grip for either of these?
There is not, just an “extension grip” for the R8
@@stepheneckert4006 that's a shame.
Every beginner photographer should be grabbing the R8 as fast as humanly possible and investing in high end glass for the future. That R8 is INSANE.

How is a $1,500 camera for beginners?
@@thisisbenji90 you can get s5ii for only 500$ more and you get access to great sigma glass. it's actually insane that people think r8 is a good deal
@@sergeyzakharov7326 if you insist 4k60 uncropped is a must, you need to look at Z9 in Nikon land, or Sony a7siii at a minimum. How is the cheapest full frame having it not insane? The list goes on. If you shoot night wildlife, AF capability of R8 is unmatched under 2k5. Don't dream about IBIS going to help you in fast shutter speed and animals move all the time. How is that not insane? Even you just have a young kid at an uncooperative age, R8 is going to give you more confidence than any camera from Nikon or Panasonic to snap sharp photos with kids action.
What is about battery life issue ???
Is it worth getting the Control Ring Adapter with the R8?
The R8 is just too good, it's simply way to good for this price point.
£1700 R8 is terrible value.
Ignoring all discounts, cashbacks and offers, and going by current RRP prices from the biggest dealerships in the UK (Jessops, WEX and ParkCameras) lets see how good it is at this price point.
The EOS-R is £1450 (many ways superior to the R8)
£1700 is exactly the same as the A7C's price
The R6 is £1900, only £200 more.
The Panasonic S5ii is £2000
And the Z5 and Z6ii come in at £1350 and £2100 respectively..
The R8 is a mid-priced full frame camera with basic entry level features and form factor. Rip off.

Hi, first time seeing your work, I was researching the Canon R50 and found you. TERRIFIC content, very helpful, concise and well presented, thank you for making this!
Hey Fro, maybe I missed it but how long does it take to clear the buffer shooting in raw?
Looking to get my first camera for conematic B roll Sony zve10 or the R50? Any input is helpful!
What kind of electronic viewfinder do you use for your Canon camera please (name brand & model)?
Sony needs to drop an a7c II now.
Thanks! How are the colors on this camera for video? Are they the same as the Canon R5 out of camera?
I currently have the EOS RP and was thinking of getting the R8. I am in no way a professional I am an average joe taking photos at disneyland and so on. Would it be an upgrade in your opinion? And Would you upgraded from the RP? TIA
thanks to both for the production value of this trip
Jared what is your opinion on RP vs R50?? Which one for let’s say tennis shots
Does this new camera have exposure bracketing? Ive only had Nikons and they've all had it. Great review Jared! Thankyou
It does
Hi Jarred, may I know wheter the extension grip of RP can be use for R8? I saw in your video that the R8 is having an extension grip, so I wonder whether it is the same RP grip. Thanks!
Yup same EG-E1 grip as RP
Great video, I like r8 but this little battery 🔋 I can’t understand.
saw some pretty heavy warping when you you panned around 27:30.
Wonder if it’s any better or worse than the Sony zve10.
Hi, R7 or R8? For travel videos and some photos. What's your rec.
What type of sport are you doing? The electronic shutter in the R5 mk2 is actually solid.
I love my R50 but am seriously considering picking up an R8 to add to the lineup as a backup (or maybe even front liner) to my wife's R7.
What would you recommend for someone looking to upgrade from a 7D MK1 (and have a lot of glass to suit already). While I am only serious amateur, doing portraits & landscapes & I like to get creative. I also use the camera for doing photo shoots & build stories on customers cars (modified/race etc). And do shoot car shows & motorsports. Also keep in mind, I am in Australia, so prices are vastly different.
thanks so much Jared. I just discovered this camera today. I still have an old Sony rx100 ii which is lovely for its size but would be nice to step up. I can afford the new r50 when it's available. I enjoy traveling to parks (national and otherwise) and would like to have a good camera for video of my jazz group where a good mic can also be used.
Hey Jared... does the R50 have a clean hdmi out so it can be used for live streaming?
On another note can't you use the efs 10-18mm adapted?
I think so. But I guess you could adapt but would add a lot of size
As a student looking to make the jump to full-frame from my Canon 1300d of nearly 6 years, this seems like a god-send.
I feel like the quirky settings in the R50 is geared towards cellphone photographers that want something more dedicated but simple to them
Can't wait to see the comparison between the R7 & R8. I've been using 7D Mk II to shoot skateboarding since 2015
Didn’t even see this coming 👀🔥🔥🔥
Hmmm, after watching some other reviews I couldn’t find a reason for adding the R8 to my gear bag, but now after watching your review and highlighting some other things they didn’t or perhaps didn’t explain in detail I’m think I might have a need to add this to my bag of tricks! 😊 Thanks!
So basically compared to the Z5, if you need the best AF the R8 smokes it. However, the Z5 still has IBIS so it’s probably better for more static shots?
Please tell me the R8 is made in japan and not outsourced to philippines or wherever ..
I have m6 mark ii because of your review before 3years ago...
But now want to buy this eos r version😅😅😅
Is it worth it to change??
the prohibition of 3rd party lenses from the RF mount is a deal breaker especially since the kit lens is too tight for vlogging
A first party battery grip with pogo pins, and vertical shutter, would be a great addition to this camera. Especially if it worked on both cameras.
Would you consider this an upgrade for someone who has the original EOS R and does primarily photography??
What equipment did you use to record your viewfinder cause in the future im looking to make some POV videos
Atomos ninja V hdmi recorder
I like how your pages of notes are entirely highlighten (and not just some words or phrases) :D
Other than that, my only rant is that they didn't add the joystick to the R8 (though the upper low-end APS-C R10 has it), but it's understandable, as the level of convenience that that device brings can change the perception of the camera.
additional grip you show on the r8 on the thumbnail?

How important is IBIS for photography?

Hi Jared. How were you able to display the lens focal length on the EVF? Is that supported across all Canon cameras? I have an M50 II.
Does the old hack to the EXIF data let you open the raw files in lightroom?
Hmmm, When Nikon released it's extended battery grip for the Z6/7, you made a huge deal about being worthless because it did not have any shutter release buttons. On the new Canon, their grip is just a place to put your pinky finger and you are ok with that?
The Canon grip in $80...
How are the stills on the Aspc camera?
Nice job boys on getting all this info out so fast! I'm very happy to see the lower price point as it should send a shock wave to the others!

quick question ... I am just getting back into photography and I think the R8 is a perfect start, however ... I've always loved sigma lenses. Have you done a review on the Sigma FP or FP L?
What the tripod that he has?
I wonder if the touch to focus thing will trickle up to the R6 II with a firmware update. I'd hope so.
I’d imagine so. I think we will see some other new features shortly for the R6 ii if I was to bet
Not sure you need it since the stick does the same thing.
I hope so too! 👍
does the r50 have a usb-c charging port?
Sounds like a really good eos2000d replacement, for like double the price.

Mechanical shutter
No ibis. Single card slot. Fairly hard then for wedding photography 😅
Who is that grip made by?thanks

I currently have a Canon 77d and was looking to upgrade to the R6 (I cannot afford the R6 II).
Now that I see the R8, I think it makes more sense than the R6, am I wrong?
I wouldn't use IBS because I shoot at 1/1000 for basketball and otherwise I use studio lights.
I love my m6 mark ii. Can’t see enough from either of these to move into the RF quite yet but the R8 & R7 do seem awesome. Some day. Some day. 🤷♂️
I love my m6.
Agreed. There's nothing the R50, R10 or R7 offer to prompt me to switch, when price, weight, features and lenses (especially 3rd party M mount support!) are considered.
Sigma 56. Rest my case.
i’m in the same boat😁
I don't think I ever had as much fun with a camera as I did with my M6 II, used primarily for birds and wildlife along with the Sigma 150-600C and Tamron 100-400 Di VC. But I recently upgraded to the R7 with the R 100-500. While I hesitated over the price, there is no comparison. The R7 subject tracking is excellent, especially the bird eye autofocus. And the Canon RF lens outperforms the third party lenses in weight, AF responsiveness, image stabilization, and image quality. If you can manage the price, it's worth it.
Does the r8 offer a battery grip?
Update, they MIGHT not, probably a 3rd party company.
Jared why not just buy some yellow paper.
That will save you highlighting it all!
Same, got the m6 mark ii. Perfect for travel and backpacking
Does dual pixel autofocus work for 4K in R8?
Is that the grip extension on the r8 from the rp ?
Yes, the bodies of the RP and R8 are pretty much identical.
Yes, same EG-E1 grip, $80
Dear Jared, I see you mention the extension grip for the R8. Is that the same extension grip as for the RP ? Canon EG-E1 Extension Grip ? If so, could you please verify if the Neewer or Vello battery grip for RP is compatible for the R8 ? That would be awesome, as it seems for now Canon does not offer a battery grip ( 4 years later they still don't for the RP ). Thanks for your time.
I'm using nikon 3300d .. can I move this canon r8 ?
Canon R7 or R8? Which is best for indoor photo & Video shooting?
Hi Jared, thx for this video! But is it true that the EOS R8 shoot in 14bit even in 20fps mode? I have an EOS R6 Mark II and I believe R6m2 only shoot in 12bit when it set on electronic shutter.
