I expect to stick with Sony for the foreseeable future (I'd have to take a big loss to sell all my lenses and accessories and rebuy from a new manufacturer). I currently use an A7IV as my primary camera, mostly for photography. I get up to 10fps with mechanical shutter. Someday I'd like to have a stacked sensor body with higher speed burst shooting and minimal rolling shutter effect in video. That might mean picking up a used A1 or waiting to see what a future A9 markIII can do

R10 or R7, depending on when my EOS 1100D dies and how much money can i spend when it does. Also depends on if my current lenses can resolve the 32mpx sensor of the R7 or not.

I've pre-ordered one in february and received it pretty early. Got almost 2k shots with it by now and learning something new every day. All my lenses are stabilized and since I have no comparison, I don't miss anything. Like the ibis. I'm getting addicted more and more and it's wonderful. Very happy with the cam and I know that the cam is capable and now its on me to get the good shots! As always: You videos help me a lot Simon. Thanks for that.

This camera is for people like me. I don’t get paid to take photos, but I’m an enthusiast who likes to take the best possible photos (especially landscapes). But I’m also on a budget and can’t justify a $2k or more purchase. I just finished a mountain trip with my new R8 and I was very pleased with the results. This camera opened up new photo opportunities for me without costing too much. Now I just need a better lens…

Great video ! 3 things make me consider the R6 Mk2: I have some older EF lenses without stabilisation (200mm f/2.8L), so IBIS is much appreciated. Also I like that on the R6 Mk2 the sensor is protected when the camera is turned off. And last: the 12 fps mechanical shutter ...

I love compact mirrorless bodies as I hike for many miles on weekend mornings searching for anything from owls to butterflies. I personally use Sony. No particular reason why. Simon, this was a great review of the camera. Most "haters" will mention the lack of IBIS, short battery life etc. and they just want the best for the lowest price possible. We all know this is not the case. This is a good upgrade from a cropped sensor camera like I am thinking now. For non professional photographers I see this camera as an excellent option.

Great product review. Generally one gets get the features and performance they pay for. I like how you show the advantages and disadvantages of each design decision Canon made. For example a smaller battery or the shutter mechanism. Budget dictates what you can get in a camera so being practical about what you get is helpful. What is really interesting is that the door to wildlife photography is definitely open at low cost when you consider an inexpensive lens option such as the RF 100-400mm USM.

What I do is use hi without a plus which is 20fps electronic shutter. Your buffer doubles and you get around 150 shots in compressed raw or joeg. 20fps is very fast it is what r5 can do with a fresh battery. I do use 40fps mode sometimes but I highly recommend using 20fps which is plenty fast for many things and no buffer issues

I'm hoping more generalist photographers will find your enjoyable and helpful reviews. I take probably one bird photo every 3-5 years. I'm 81, 56 years a pro photographer and find lots of value here. The problem with Canon used to be that they crippled their low-end cameras; now it's an embarrassment of riches! I could use them all; thankfully the R6 covers the bases beautifully.

First of all I'd like to say very good through review of the camera. Thanks a lot! Secondly I'd like to ask your opinion on this camera. I'm a fairly long time Canon DSLR shooter (mostly 7D) and I'm about to switch over to mirrorless. Full frame isn't a must have but while I'm making a change I'd like to switch over to FF finally as well. I'm not a pro by all means but when I do something I'd like to do it as best as I can. I mostly shoot birds like seagulls which doesn't really count as wildlife in my opinion, outdoor sports like soccer, voleyball or tennis and a little bit of macro. With my new camera I'd like to take a serious step into portrait photography as well. The setup I have in mind, at least to start off, is Canon R8 with Canon 24-105L f4, 50mm f1.8 stm using the adaptor. What do you think of this setup? Autofocus is important and I'm a bit worries about using adapters.

Hi Simon - thanks for another very great video. I have bought the R8 as a travel camera in addition to my R5 and I love it. Regarding the battery indicator I have seen so many reviews saying "I didn't even used a single tick". The reason is that three ticks (maximum) means sufficient battery, two ticks means low battery. Really hope Canon will change this - how it is now is misleading, and probably to cover for the 'small' battery. There is no reason for this as the battery is 'okay', but, Canon, please let us know what is left on the battery as 100/75/50/25 that most other camera's.

Another excellent and informative video Simon and I have now caught up on all your videos. It is not just your photographic skills and knowledge that locked me in but your totally relatable mannerisms and unbounded joy displayed when you are out amongst nature. I too have learnt bird calls and feel this has helped in certain situations, my ability to get in closer. I also especially appreciated your low-light shooting video (including a beautiful12800 ISO shot). I am recently retired (funnily enough from Veterans' Affairs NZ) and use the R6 here and 100-500mm lens. Your analysis of the R6 sensor in low light I found VERY informative (verses the R5). We have a range of unique forest dwelling birds here in New Zealand, often found on or near the forest floor and in lower light situations. Hope to see you down here one day Simon as the birdlife here is quite unique and would test you in many different environments. Judging by the number of calendars you sent down here you would be very welcome in NZ. Hope you enjoy your Africa safari!

I have the R5 and the R7 along with the original Canon EOS R....I like them all I do think that each one has its own purpose and personality if that makes sense lol I mainly shoot the Canon R for landscape and for wildlife I shoot the R5 My wife however has taken over the r7 and absolutely loves that camera.

I have the R10, the same battery the r8 uses, and with changing a few settings I have no problem shooting 400-600 shots with half a charge on my battery

Dang if only i had the extra cash to take your class. Would you buy the r6 referbished over the r7? Im wanting to upgrade at the end of the year. I have been trying to figure out what to buy. I only have a 400mm f5.6. Cant wait to see some more videos on the r8. Have a good day.

I remember going out with two rolls of Kodak Ektachrome and waiting almost a week for the results, setting up the projector, It was a great time, wondering how things were going to turn out.........Photography was sure different those days, love the videos.

I have recently purchased the R8 for creating underwater video's. I was a bit disappointed in the fact that the camera does not have IBIS, which makes me dependant on lens stabilisation. Stabilisation is very important underwater. However, I have come across a very interesting solution for extra stability! Have you heard of the GyroFlow software? When pairing a camera like the R8 with an actioncam such as a GoPro mounted next to each other, the software can use the gyro data from the GoPro, to accurately correct for small movements. I'm excited to try this out, as the GoPro is already in my possession! I think this a lot more accurate then the digital stabilisation canon offers.

Is this a good first full frame ? Also So with the lack of a mechanical shutter, is a cameras shutter count no longer important? Do you have a video regarding the differences / pros/cons of mechanical vs electronic?

I'm loving the R8.. I picked up photography back when the EOS Rebel xt was new and started down the path.. family tragedy hit and I walked away a few short years later.. Just recently due to a couple of friends, as well as a few photographers from the east coast I follow,,, My interest was re-ignited, so I pre-ordered and received the R8.. I'm loving this thing especially beside the Mini 3 pro drone I have..
I wasn't about to put out the money for the R6MII or anything similar, not knowing if I will stick with photography in general,, or which direction in photography I will gravitate toward..
I've taken it a few times now out to the coast for a beach cleanup under not so favorable weather,, as well as a birthday party with all sorts of colors and movement,, and I gotta say I'm extremely happy so far with my choice.. I can only hope to outlearn and outgrow this camera,, for me it's an awesome buy.

I'm not sure if you answered this already but I couldn't find it - what do you think about super zoom bridge cameras?
Like Nikon P950 or Canon SX70 HS?
I know that they are not full frame but they are much cheaper than "normal" camera and lenses. Actually P950 already is stretching my budget.
I've never had a real camera but I would really like one with good zoom. Primarily for birding and other wildlife.

yes, theres a shutter option. You need to be in photo mode.

That's interesting about the battery life. I have a Canon 850D (T8i) that uses the same battery. Being a DSLR it has to power more mechanically actuated stuff than a mirrorless. I often get 500+ images per battery but just last week shooting in Arkansas I was usually in auto-bracket mode and I almost never got more than the mid 200s per battery. Some of that was with an older Canon IS lens but more often not. I'm not sure why it was using more power but that battery is indeed a decent performer for its size.

  • @Qwarzz
    @Qwarzz ปีที่แล้ว

That was interesting. I'm far from professional and sticking to a smaller budget for my equipment. At the moment I have an old 6D which does get nice photos but is showing it's age in many ways.
I've been interested in R models as I'd like to use the camera for videos as well but they've been a bit on the expensive side. R8 would definitely be within my reach. Does sound worth considering. I don't have that many lenses however so I'll have to see what other manufacturers are offering as well when I feel comfortable buying something like this.

Just got the R8 as a "studio camera" myself.
Are you using it in webcam mode or with a video capture device or just recording internally?
For me the abilty to plug it in and use as a webcam was another "studio feature" I wanted to take advantage of.

Great review Simon. Just subscribed . Practical and thorough. Is the color science that much better on the R8 than the R6 ? I heard using the R8 with glasses is also not as nice as with the R6. Want to be able to grow over time with my purchase. Would you pick a Used R6 over a new R8 for someone who wants a good/ great growth potential for portraits and event photography where video is not important and wildlife is just an occasional consideration. Thank you so much.😊

I would probably take a used R6, but not for colour science, but for battery life, stabilized sensor and customizability/buttons/dials.

Great video, as allways... BTW, between R7 and R8, would you go for the full frame or stick with a more "jacked up" aps-c?

    • @carloscanizares4699
      @carloscanizares4699 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Generally, full frame for better low light, and APS-C for reach.
But better to compare the R7 with the R6 or 5. If you’re familiar with Canon’s pre-mirrorless lineup, the R7 is the 7D, which was their crop version of the 5D. Then the 6D came in after.
