I did 40 years in the motor trade, to me, a rubber based drive belt partially submerged in oil does not bode well from the word go!
Highly recommend Ben for Wet Belt replacement, because he goes the extra mile ensuring the job is done properly including overnight curing of the seals before adding oil etc. Also fair value. Bearing in mind this is a once in 100,000 task I wanted it done properly. Thanks Ben.
Once every 100 000 ?? My mates van lost the motor at 57000 because the belt gave up I wouldn’t trust that belt past 40 000 ……

These are very sensitive to oil type used. If you use an engine oil with high levels of detergent in it the belt will deteriorate faster.
2.0 TDCi is not consumer proof.

@@cotswoldmusings I am looking at options myself for my van. It is a trade off usually because a lower detergent oil needs more ofte to be changed and dpf might suffer, but they also usually have better shear and temperature protection. I'm looking at more expensive stuff like Royal Purple HPS. Have not decided.
The Old 2.5 di Transit what's easily cover half a million miles and some on the original clutch I used to work on these vans 30 years ago if you are careful driver they would last forever unlike today's buckets of crap 2.5 di best Transit diesel engine ever😅😅😮😮😢😢😊😊😊

The total brake failure that my son experienced while coming off the slip road at Junction 10 on the M23 motorway was terrifying and he (and his apprentice) were fortunate not to have been involved in a major accident at this busy junction.
The cause of the failure is well documented - the use of the wet belt inside the EcoBoost engine causes delamination over time. Debris from it eventually clogs the pick up pipe and vacuum pump which then fails causing the brake pedal to go hard.
The brake pedal simply cannot be depressed to slow the vehicle no matter how hard you try.
He is self-employed and relies on his Ford Transit Custom van everyday. It is currently at a Hendy Ford garage awaiting a goodwill gesture from Ford - as it is a few months out of warranty - yet the wet belt was not due to be changed for another 30,000 miles at the earliest.The current estimated cost of the repairs are £1,800! In addition, the failure of the wet belt may have caused damage to the turbo and the cost to replace it would be £1,000 according to Hendy. He has had the vehicle regularly serviced - using the specified oil.
Ford have a duty to undertake the repairs - and cover any additional damages resulting from the delamination of the wet belt but they are digging their heels in - offering a fraction of the repair cost.
Just had new engines for two of our Transits, one at 77K miles and one at 120K miles with a broken wet belt 30K miles before it was due for change. Vehicles bought new in 2018 and 2019 and always serviced on the dot. These Fords really are heaps of crap, we won't be buying any more.
Braking performance will be reduced as the brake booster isn’t working, but you can absolutely stop the vehicle - it just requires significantly more brake pedal force than normal

Great video but what advantages does a wet belt have over a standard set up or cam chain. Manufacturers seem to foist all these brilliant ideas on the unsuspecting public then run a mile when they go wrong.
Ford claims that wet belt reduces frictions compared to timing chain from Duratorq engines. I'm kinda curious what material that replaces rubber that can withstand hot temperature and doesn't go brittle at high speed and high temperatures...
A slight save in fuel less friction a few pounds saved but costs thousands in repairs
I've just bought a 2018 transit custom with 172k miles on it, I drove it home and the next day changed the wet belts. They were in pretty good condition but for £150 worth of parts and not knowing when it was last done it just made sense to change them.
A wet belt replaced is a top-end rebuild prevented.
Too bad there aren't chain conversion kits available for these engines tbh. The 2.0 Ecoblue is otherwise a very stout, reliable, well manufactured and easy to work on engine.
@@DigBipper188 I'm also hoping there will be a chain conversion. This idea of wet belts is such a bad design. They are now recalling the 1.0 Ecoboost engines.
Great video looks like you have done a lot of these question did you reuse the bottom pulley bolt as it is a stretch bolt is it ok to reuse and what did you talk it to. Also did you remove the tie strap you put on the upper pipe. Also how long was the total job not including letting the sealer set over night. Many thanks. Michel

It would last longer it if was a Timing Chain instead of Rubber mixing with oil as oil is known for destroying Rubber. I wonder if an after Market Company have come up with a chain drive replacement
Only if its the wrong type or has too much diesel in it. Oil has no effect on rubber, diesel does.

I wish I knew how to do all that. Very impressed. I see a lot of these vans for sale at what looks like the mileage just short of this work needing doing. If you didn’t know you could buy the van and find the engine wrecked soon after.

how often do I need to do this procedure? What are the factory's mileage regulations before belt replacement and when do you actually need to carry out a timing belt replacement service?
Seems ford want these to fail, my focus 72reg was collected for its first service with 11,000 miles on clock, I put a mark on oil filter before hand and checked oil colour, it was returned with same filter and oil looked the same as before service, I took it back and confronted them about this, they tried to tell me it had been done so I produced photos of filter etc , they took it back in and changed them telling me the mechanic had forgotten to do the oil change,
Unfortunately this happens, one needs to do the oil and filter oneself, or as you did - leave tell-tales, but even then you have to go through the confrontation stage later if you are charged for work not done. It is just best to cut them out of the loop altogether if you have the know how.
Happened to me in 1980 with a brand new motorcycle at it's first dealer service. I've been doing it myself ever since, God damn them.

Ford are killing off the customer base and EV sales are dying, not a lot left for them to manufacture except maybe bikes with oil in the tyres instead of air.

Hi, glad you enjoyed the video.
I remove the sump pan with every wet belt replacement for two reasons, one to gain access to replace the oil pump belt and two to clear the oil pick pipe of potential debris from the timing belt.
It is not required to remove the sump if you're just replacing the timing belt, but I would highly recommend doing so.

I have a 2017 with 77,000 miles I don't have a service history but it was a police dog van so I imagine it has been well looked after. do I need to change the belt, for say 150k but some say that's stretching it a bit? Thanks in advance.
For peace of mind I would get the belt replaced, or at least take the sump off and check the pickup pipe for debris from the belt.
That sounds like something every owner should know how to do themselves every few thousand miles or so, don't you think? Could really save a lot of headaches. Fancy doing a tutorial video for beginners?
Ridiculous to think putting a rubber drive belt in oil would be a good idea !. Come on Ford, what were you thinking ?. The idea of a timing belt on the outside of the engine was to make it more easily serviceable than an internal chain. Internally lubricated chains usually last the life of the vehicle (BMW not included), rubber belts degrade over time, usually from dry rot breaking them down. Ford had the wisdom here to combine the very worst parts of both and figured it was a great idea !. I guess sales of replacement engines for these things are doing very good business for them 😂😂. Interesting how, in the States, they were forced, by a class action lawsuit, to recall these things, at huge cost to them, but, here in the U.K., business as usual and most warranty claims get refused if not serviced by a main dealer because, they say, “they probably didn’t use the correct spec. oil” !.

Some company on here has a fleet of about 25 vans 7 are of the road with blown engines in the US they are recalled but not in the uk appalling design

I have the 2017 with 2.0 ecoblue wetbelt serviced by myself more regular than recomended with correct oil and filter, never noticed anything in the oil pan, ive done 58000miles with no other problems and this milage includes 2 none stop runs to spain 2000miles and same on return journey not missed a beat, ive just spoke to ford to trade it in for another he has one with 80,000 miles but said he would recomend changing belts every 60000 miles so he understood when i said i dont want it unless he takes £2000 of for the next belt change in 40000 miles i dont have that much in the van he said. I said to him your selling me something that states in the book that belts last 150000 miles so false advertising, nothing i can do he said. So i asked if the van has gone in for a recall then it shouldn’t happen again if you done some mods. Your asking the wrong person he said, i said no i’am asking the right person as your the one thats priced it and selling it to me with the promise it lasting all these miles between services. So all they can do is replace the belt on recall but thats not addressing the problem only extending it for another 60000 miles so its not really a recall its just an bloody service.its a con and i told him to fuck off i’ll get a transporter.
Ford what a joke my 22 plate 2 years old with only 35000 clutch failed now i am told it won’t be under warranty yet they fail to understand 3 year manufacture warranty is still in place
Only in the first year is everything covered, the first year is unlimited mileage, the second and third years have a mileage limit. That is why it won't be covered, the manufacturer takes into account reasonable wear and tear of components seen as consumables which can be adversely affected due to variations in driving styles.
If the average clutch has a life of 100k yours would have a 1/3 less life than it did 2 years ago, assuming you drive normally and don't drive constantly slipping the clutch which neither of you can prove to the other. Fitting a new clutch to a 2 year old vehicle would therefore come under a betterment clause. It sucks and you've been unlucky, it is not the usual service life but best you can hope for is a good will contribution.

Nissan unlimited 5 year warranty after which can be extended to 8 years with payment.

This whole idea of having a timing BELT running in oil must be one of the most dramatic examples of a carmakers’ costcutting at the costumers’ expense.... and to me once more an indication that factories don’t care no more about combustion engines being costly and or unreliable..... it will only make EV’s a more accepted alternative....

What is the belt change interval on these and is the cause from extended oil services with all the problems of dirty oil from EGRs and DPF's ? Have a fleet of 10 transits and need to confirm years and if all or some have wet belts. Some are at 90k miles now , which could be a worry.

If your Transit customs are 2016 onwards and have the 2.0 Ecoblue Diesel engine, they will have a wet timing belt.
Originally the recommended belt change interval was 120/150k or 10 years. But I have seen many failed/delaminated belts as little as 50k miles.
I'm not sure the exact cause of this. For peace of mind I would recommend getting your vans inspected, the easiest way is to remove the sump and check the oil pick up.

@@bwautocare thanks for your reply. Ford dont show any interest in these. I am sure we lost an engine to this failure before i worked here and Ford replaced the engine at 84k miles. We sold it at 165k and never did a belt change on the second engine. We have always used Fords for servicing.
Just had min done FOC on a Ford recall. 67 plate.
@@stevewilkin3977 my local garage, not Ford, has all the reg numbers and says they are all wet belts. So, under discussion with the md on a plan for them. Some we can replace with new vans, but nit all.....
Might be worth checking with your local Ford dealer, I only called in to ask when it was due and they said to me has it had the recall.

Why when you have gone to all that trouble to remove a stupid idea do you replace it with ANOTHER belt. There are chain conversions available.

I stopped buying transits years ago as I only use my van privately.
Most of The problems with modern cars are emissions all this is done for is emissions as it supposedly runs with less friction for fuel economy well done ulez most problems with all modern cars is emissions related problems awful crippling a country for emissions well done 😂

My work has a fleet with with about 35 of these shit heaps they go through engines like they are consumables.
Who ever designed this engine needs ****ed and oh lets put the oil filter on it's side. These strainers get blocked on all wet belt motors, Ford really must do better.

Wet belts are a stupid idea. Even if they actually lasted the 150k miles the replacement is loads more expensive than an external belt, but with no advantages.
This is yet another example of why ford are absolute shite when looking for a replacement for my mk2 focus estate 1.6tdci i avoided all ford made engines and bought the 2.0tdci (hdi) dw10 engine built in france by peugeot citroen and shes a bute smooth as butter not a wet belt insite

One of the worst design principles of the internal combustion engine ever. I know I'll build an engine that combines a material that we cannot guarantee the life expectancy when submerged in oil with such a varied temp range. I guess the accounting depth thought when the engine self destruction we can profit from the sale of a new engine or a new vehicle. Almost commercial suicide. I just hope whoever signed this crap off for manufacture left a note before his/her death jump.
