1960 Plymouth Fury Daily Driver Special! Part 2: No Turning Back Now!

  • Hi! More on the Fury Project today! This time we'll disassemble the Plymouth Hardtop and cut off all of the coupe-only body parts to combine with the Dodge platform.
I'll insert this from the description in the first video:
I suspect that there will be a few people who think that this is some kind of tragedy to take the Dart apart and use the floor to save the much rarer and infinitely more desirable Fury Hardtop, but I wanted to point out a couple of things here so that I do not have to repeat myself in the comments section:
    - The Dart was not a complete car. The glass, bumpers, and a bunch of the trim and lights were missing. It was not a viable restoration project. Lots of poor bodywork under the red primer; no loss to use it as a donor. Every single usable part of the Dart will be saved and sold to help other people restore their cars.
    - Good Dart 4 door sedans are out there; it was not rare or special.
    - The Dart was for sale locally for a long time. No one bought it.
    - I bought the Dart at a well-advertised public auction; anyone so determined to try to save the car could have just showed up and held up their hand and bought it.
    - The Fury chassis was so rusty that this was the only realistic way to save such a rare and special machine. The rockers, floors, frame rails, trunk floor and wheelhouses were all completely useless. The engine was seized, the brakes and exhaust were long gone, the windshield was broken, and there was very little that could be salvaged other than the trim and Fury-specific parts.
    - No one other than me who showed up to look at the Fury was willing to do anything other than strip parts and scrap the car. As soon as I saw how awesome it was, I knew I had to save it with this ambitious rebuild idea.
    - Finally: Nothing about this is illegal. I legally own both cars. I can cut them both up, or do whatever I want with them. This is essentially just a comprehensive rust repair job. I am not building this car to re-sell, or to make money from it in any way. The serial and body numbers will be 1960 Plymouth Fury, and the Dodge parts will be sold to help other people restore theirs. If I were to represent this as an all-original car, that would be a different story. Of course, filming the process and sharing it with everyone kind of makes that an impossibility. The car will be fully inspected and roadworthy when it is finished. It will be a 1960 Fury, 2 door hardtop. The chassis are identical, and the only difference between the two models when they were new was the external sheet metal and trim.
Anyway, just wanted to get that out of the way so we can have some real fun and save this wonderful and outrageous space-ship of a car! Please join us as we first do the major splice, followed by all of the rest of the work to put this Fury back on the road where it belongs!
Next video we will get busy "cleaning up" the pieces so they can be assembled into a single unit again.
All the very best from me and Miss Frankers and the rest of the fellas who help out on this stuff just for the laughs!
    Scott

Experience and skill are evident here. A man rolling in gravel, in the dark and cold, drilling out spot welds for hours can only be explained as Passion. I'm right there vicariously, with the same warm and cozy joy of viewing a snowy, sub-freezing NFL game on TV sitting next to my woodstove.

My grandfather had a Fury, and I remember the headlights being totally rusted out not that long after he got it. Weird to think how many cars like these, in even better condition, were thrown into crushers back in the day. ;)

My parents owned a 1657 Plymouth Belvedere in the early 1960's. It was so rusty, we could see the street from the back seats. My father put sheet metal down under what was left of the carpet, so we would not fall through. The headlamps were ready to fall out of it also. It was traded for a new 1964 Ford Galaxy, so the car was only about 7 years old. All the cars rusted rather quickly back then, but the Chrysler products really were the worst for rusting.

That’s a monumental job. But what a unique finished product you will have! There can’t be many 60 Fury’s left in the world. They were so ugly that they were beautiful. I have to say that I share feelings about the passenger side quarter panel. When you removed the trim it was so amazing that it was still hanging on, because literally there was nothing for it to be attached to! Hope you find at least another quarter although scoring another whole body would certainly be nice. And I totally agree that a Will It Run episode on what's left of the Fury would be quite hilarious! I'm enjoying this series so much so much. Cheers!

Incredible! I decided to watch this whole series at once so I could see it with more continuity. You are unbelievable. I will never look at another sixties Fury without thinking of you ever again. I'm in fact beginning to believe that it's eveen more iconic of the times than the 1959 Caddie. It seems just like the car that my high school science teacher should have driven (he in fact drove a 1962 Buick before trading it in on a 1964 Buick Riviera the year I graduated). I still love, lust and want to own the MAC that you have. You do still own it don't You?!

Also, only 2500 and some change Two doors made...So Im getting creative with quarters using four door quarters and rear doors skins..... To make one good quarter for a two door....

Going to be a lot of hard work for you fellas but in the end it will be well worth the saving of the car! Can’t wait to see more and the finished product!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

bg technically not the saving of "the car" it is the death of 2 cars to make one hybrid Plodge that looks like a Plymouth. Canada likes Plodges and as a kid in Chicago I used to love checking out the '57-'59 Plodges with Dodge fronts and Ply rears or DeSoto fronts with Plymouth backs - very weird but cool. 🚗

      cuda426hemi yes. I know it’s a combo hybrid but I also
Look at it as saving history even though it was never a real conglomeration of parts. And yes. Still very cool. I have a 48 dodge pikithouse which has 85 fifth avenue suspension rear end and engine. Another conglomeration which I totally live!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

My bud and I did an Estate Sale a few months ago - Hollywood stunt guy ...long story short my bud bought an unrestored excellent condition pink on black '55 Dodge Coronet for "nothing". Now if we could drop a Tesla drivetrain in these relics ....0-60 in 4 seconds would be neat in a '55 Mopar.

Dude. Your skills are amazing. I won't be so presumptuous as to speak for all of the other agents on this side of the screen, but your 'can-do' attitude is quite inspiring. The projects that you take on are not small. You don't "swap out" things like water pumps, you rebuild them! The Citroen, the Race car, the Kaiser et al. Wild stuff, man. I'm blown away by this , and even tho it's almost midnight, I'm going over to my 66 Triumph Tr6SR (w/a Bonneville head) and start sorting the pieces for this weekend's 'tidy' . Thanks, Scott, for takin' us along, it's a wild ride, and I hope I get to hang around the yard one day and shoot the shit with ya...
