Keep in mind, when you shut an engine off, heat continues to transfer into the coolant, which isn't flowing to the radiator to shed it. So although the coolant temp is increasing, the block and heads are actually cooling down. The engine isn't getting any hotter, but a temperature sensor will suggest that it is.

I just found your channel when I saw part 1 of this 65 Fury.
My first car was a 65 Fury III wagon, similar color.
I inherited it from my dad who bought it in 66.
It started out as a nice car, but the old man was never one for taking care of cars.
He drove it for 10 years and maybe changed the oil twice.
Shortly after he gave it to me he decided to cut down a tree near the driveway that came down on too of the cat, right behind the rear door on the driver's side.
The thing ran so bad, when I tried to pull away from a light I had to put my foot to the floor and the hood would shake like it was trying to fly away, but the car barely rolled.
I pulled the oil pan and valve covers and cleaned out as much sludge as I could get out of it, tuned it up and did everything else I could do to try and make it run decent, but the damage was already done.
    That poor engine was toast.

probably too late to help now but for radiator and engine cooling system heavy duty flush use about a cup of dry oxalic acid crystals. Run to engine is hot then another 15 minutes. Drain, refill with a cup of baking soda and water, run until hot engine and for a few minutes after that then drain. Oxalic acid was a major component of the old heavy radiator cleaners by DuPont and others back a few decades ago, before aluminum components came to be. You may need to do this twice and depending on how brave you are, let the engine run a half hour. The risk is that heavy rusted areas may start to leak because the rust was all that was holding it tight. Oxalic must have heat to work, hotter the better. The only other remedy would be to remove the top and bottom tanks of the radiator and rod them out. The engine block would still need to be cleaned this way because of the heavy rust accumulation.

Good initial run on the wagon! I've had similar overheat problems in the early sixties, and as a result earned a lot of things that didn't work! First thing, you absolutely NEED a fan shroud, otherwise the fan isn't pulling nearly all the air through the rad. Second, many engines will not cool without the restriction of a thermostat. And yes, I always favored the 160 degree ones. Although this isn't a factor in your case, retarded timing will cause overheat. Finally, flush the radiator and the engine block repeatedly, 'till you get clear water. You might want to add some citric acid or white vinegar to the engine flush, but probably not the radiator and heater. Finally, Dwight Yocum was an ideal choice on the drive! That rubber sheeting you scored is EPDM rubber roofing, very durable and of course made for outdoor use! Makes a really great roof!

Love the video especially the donuts. My dad was having the same problem on his 383 stroker camaro running at 220 I put all new parts besides the stock radiator that he bought. Finally talked him onto a 4 core aluminum radiator and electric fans . Waiting on a new trans cooler then we will see how that works. BTW maybe we can do some kinda trade deal if u ever wanna get rid of that. I have a beautamis s10 extreme extended cab...step side bed and fiberglass cover. Painted it 5 years ago ultra silver metallic. 22 inch wheels. Original interior with floor counsel shifter mint condition. Paint has some littpe dings and scratches now. Funny how whenever you put a car in the garage for winter there's always something new when u bring it out in spring. Anyway I just love that car . My truck is my baby but I've always had a thing for hotrod wagons. Anyway man have a good one. Love all the driving shots

Looking forward to the radiator flush. Flushed my 95 F250 many, many times, used four bottles of flush goop. Water never really cleaned up. Going to replace radiator. Hope that works. Concentrate antifreeze $17 bucks per gallon! Don’t recall it being that high. Thanks for another great video.

For a 57 year old S/W, the unit runs really well and the more work that you put into it, the better it'll go... Once you get the interior together, it should be a good daily driver... I would work on the Bronco II... From the home of PB Blaster Silicone spray... Cleveland, Ohio.....

You should put on some really cool vinyl skull or Devil wrap. Would look wicked on the hood and the top of the car.

You probably won't come back to this but here's mine anyway, on any car that has an old radiator, use cascade to flush it. We use to use it on trucks when I worked at a trucking out fit, works well, run after it gets up to temp about 30 min, might even go an hour if it's been sitting for 20 years...

Green LTD, then the Nova, then the Bronco II. As far as the overheating, yeah, probably clogged coolant passages in the block. Make sure that water pump has the right size pulley as well, because under-driving (or over-driving) the water pump can obviously cause issues. And running without a thermostat can cause overheating because the coolant can flow through the radiator too quickly to be cooled. You might try a 160 stat, or even a washer as a spacer/flow restrictor versus just running a wide open T-stat housing with nothing slowing the flow down. Another possibility is that one injector not working. As you know, too lean can make things too hot. Anyway, great show, man! Keep up the good work. Always awesome seeing old crap brought back to life! I am building a Buick 350 for my 74 Jeep J20 4x4 right now, should be good for 350 HP or so. She sat from 84 til I bought her about a year ago, AMC 360 long gone, and the stuck Olds 350 someone tossed in long ago ran on 7 once I got it freed up. That's out, Buick 350 going in is a one-year-only 1970 SP code, came from a Buick Skylark GS, 10.25:1 compression from the factory, stock was 315 HP and 410 TQ, looking to step that up just a little, so as to not blow the QuadraTrac T-case out of it every time I get on it! LOL! On with the show....

What an awesome revival - so much great work so far! I really think you should do 1 up from vinegar to clean the rad and all the channels in the block - try the citric acid flush. I read somewhere about that, it was a Mercedes standard flush back in the 70s. The thing is...after just 5min running it on idle 4 out of 6 core plugs opened up! They were rusted out just like yours, but the acid ate away the rust and a leak turned into a chocolate waterfall :) You need a 10% solution and citric acid is quite cheap and found in most grocery stores. When I opened up the cores there was a ton of sludge still in there, but it was mostly all loose and I believe I could have gotten it all out even without opening up the plugs. My car also used to overheat - none of that now, even in hot summer days (100F+)

Try to put some sort of shroud around that old rad so the fan can pull air to the rad only and not from all angles loosing air. You need all you can grab with that clogged rad. You be amazed in the change. Shroud Def helps. I'll see ya one day cruising when I'm over the bridge. Love your content.
