"Will it Run?" Special: Frazer Daily Driver 1-Year Update!

  • Hey! I figured we should update the Frazer project after a year of driving in all types of conditions. Repairs were required, but considering she is such an old, unrestored car, I think we got away really lucky. The total cost of running the car for a year was essentially gas and oil, a bit of antifreeze, and insurance.
I used the Frazer a lot; probably more than any of my other cars. I ran errands with it, went to some events, took friends out in it, drove it in the rain, drove it to get groceries; it didn't get used any differently than a modern car.
Of course, special care is required if you are going to use a car this old in modern traffic. No seat belts means driving extra carefully, and 6-volt headlights meant keeping the night driving in the city to a minimum. Out here in the country they are fine, though.
Anyway, over the summer I filmed a couple of the repairs and as usual, we had a few laughs keeping this thing on the road. I enjoy using the car, and the appearance of it means I never worry about leaving it parked anywhere, or fretting if someone puts a drink on the fender, or whatever. The dogs like it too; lots of room and windows that go all the way down!
FAQ: Are you going to paint it? Never. I have so many cars that are better candidates for painting that this one will never get done. It would mean having to find a better grille, the missing trim, etc.
What's the gas mileage? I don't know... Probably 16- 20 mpg depending on use.
Are you going to rebuild the engine? I am going to put another engine together and have it sitting on a stand if this one fails. Right now it is going well, and a few drips of oil every couple of days is not a concern. The clutch is holding up well, and so is the overdrive. The brakes are really doing well, and the car stops straight and properly, as long as you drive within the car's modest limits. Leave lots of room, etc, but I've only ever owned old cars, so there isn't much for me to get used to.
Anyway, I wanted to say thanks again to everyone who watches this stuff, and especially to everyone who subscribed and for all of your "likes" and comments.
I'll be wrapping up this year's Ambassador project here soon, and then we're on to something a little less basic than the Frazer, haha!
All the very best from us here; please subscribe if you haven't already! Shirts and stuff soon, I swear! Getting the site set up.
Cheers from me and Stella and Francine and the rest of the guys that make this little YT channel possible.

It's a nice change to watch a video of someone who drives and appreciates old stock cars just as they are, as opposed to some over done and boring 'rat rod' videos.

"Grampa repair stovebolt" Epic! I can picture the old dude in overalls and a sport jacket under the Frazier installing that bolt that he found in an old coffee can on his old workbench made out of an old door in a small outbuilding that smells like grease and cherry pipe tobacco.

Old car and standard poodles reminds me of how I spent high school cruising around in my unrestored 56 Buick special 2door hard top with about 3 gallons of gas in the tank and our brown poodle “Fudge”. She used to sit on the front bench seat and lean on me- I imagine we looked like an interesting couple in silhouette from behind.

    Dear CWM Scott N.
👍👌👏 Now look at this coincidence! Exactly 4 years later on a 25th of October I'm watching this great video again. Maaaan, it always gets me looking at the "mostly" green interior, especially the gorgeous dashboard with the wonderful steering wheel. Cute dogs on/in the backseats complete this beautiful picture.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.

I've watched the videos of the Frazer twice. It's a nostalgic issue. The first car I remember was my dad's blue 47 Frazer bought the same year I was born. He kept it till I was 4. But I do have some memories.

When I was 7 years old, my dad had a garage in Kenwood, Ca. To keep me out of mischief, he gave me a box of tools and a '48 Frazer. The engine was bad. He said 'take it apart, and put the parts under the bench. I stripped it completely, and that experience led me to a life as a mechanic and builder of hot rods and custom Harleys. I was a gearhead for life because of thet old maroon Frazer.

I am so envious. I live in New Brunswick and you would never find anything cars from the 40s here in a filed and be able to put it back on the road with out dumping a lot of money in to it. Here you can literally watch you car rust a way. Living buy the Atlantic Ocean and all the salt they put on the roads in the winter cars don't have a chance here. Love that your saving all theses cars. Keep the videos coming love watching them.

I stopped feeling affection for cars, sometime back in the early 1970's. The fact that I find myself driving around in 2 cars built in 2001 and 2005, affords me no joy and too much
concern. Computers, sensors, fuel pumps in tanks, no frames, timing belts, turbos, and the endless, dreary collection of "improvements" (which all hand you a big bill), leave me unimpressed and underwhelmed. I sorely miss the many wonderful '50's and '60's cars I used to have, back in the day. Seeing your fine collection of sturdy, honest survivors, fills me with nostalgia and longing.
Your channel is good medicine for me, and not just because of the cars. Your evident skill, your humor, your healthy contrarian nature, and the great characters who stop by to help out, are all part of the experience. Bravo!

The Frazer is a awesome car! Glad you use it. That is what cars were made for! I drove my 60 Pontiac Catalina all summer as an everyday car. I put almost 4000 miles on it. It has 29,000 original miles on it now. It got regular runs on the freeway at 70 mph, going up to my dads once a week. Other than oil changes and Lube jobs, I have done ZERO to it too.... not even having to add any fluids. I am still driving it, as long as the weather holds up... and it's Nov. 21st.

Things were so much better in the days before planned obsolescence. And for the record, you did up that car just the way it should've been done.... some time, good skills, some imagination and maybe a bit of love too. You hit it right on the head with your "trailer queens" statement. Sure those cars look good, but I never understood the concept of putting all that money into a car that never sees the road...except from a trailer. I am much more impressed with the work these guys do than all the "glam work" that is put into those show cars. These guys are the REAL deal.

I remember this one well. That steering wheel still looks like it belongs there....And that shift knob is a true work of fabrihacktion.
On a side note : I have driven 1983 and older cars all thru the '90's into the 2000's. Until sadly there just was not enough left of them to drive anymore. Here on the east coast they love salt in the winter, which spells an early demise to anything driven in winter. So you pick the worst looking and best driving beater with heat and hope for the best. A few times heat has been optional. Now all i have left from the old days is my 1980 AMC concord with 42k on it, of which i am responsible for 4k. It's a time capsule...I fixed everything that needed fixing ten years ago and it all still works just fine - except the valve cover gasket since it's a 225 six it is impossible to have it leak free for very long. Have a good

John Robinson spray so e oil under the car, and drive it on a dry sandy road. Not the prettiest, but it will keep the salt and rust away.ever notice how nice the front frame is? Yes, the heat keeps it dry, but its mostly from oil seeping and dripping on it.

I left a comment about rebuilding the Frazer on a "Will it Start" video. In that video, "The Old Girl" really started knocking when she finally fired. The Frazer is my favorite and I would really hate to see her die and be side lined.
The idea of rebuilding another engine and having it ready to be put in when "The Old Girl" finally throws her rod is a good one.
My Grandmother was nearly 90 when she threw her rod. It was a sad day.
The Frazer reminds me of Granny, a lot of the same features. Granny was radio delete, never got re-painted, wore her tires funny or used much gas either. She made a mean goulash.

    • @coldwarmotors
      @coldwarmotors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Dennis! Thanks fro the note and the idea re: Frazer engine rebuild. I do have a couple of other engines lined up for the car should the original one finally kick the bucket... These are 226s pulled from Kaiser parts cars. I may pull one of those down and refresh it so it is ready to drop in to the Frazer. I am kind of curious how far she'll go though? It has been knocking like that since I got it, perhaps a collapsed piston skirt or something? I'm kind of a "run to fail" guy, so I may see how far she'll go, as I drive it gently and it hasn't gotten any worse...Cheers!

The dash on Frazer is amazing. it is so much nicer looking at something other than a blob of grey plastic. What's interesting to me is beyond some minor fix its, these cars had many more miles and years to go when alot of them where parked back in the day. and just look how long with proper maintenance they last.i love seeing the old dinosaurs rambling down the road, and I always have a thumbs up to greet them. thanks again, and francine n=eds an uber cuteness award.

Great to have the roundup for the past year. It really is a good honest car used as intended and still doing its job. It sounds surprisingly rattle free, steering looks light and the shifting isn't obstructive, all in all I would love to have a drive. Look forward to more updates, as well as future projects. Best Wishes from UK to you the agents and Stella and Francine

Of all your projects I've enjoyed the Frazier the most. I 've been doing Willys vehicles for about 45 years now. The shared L6-226 came in several flavors. Have you looked at the front boss on the cylinder head for the compression ratio? It should be stamped 6.8 or 7.3. The 7.3 engines with a Carter WCD carb will dyno at about 120 HP when fresh. Not bad for an engine designed to be used in a welder or generator. I would sure like to see you take the old girl to the next level. "Last Onslaught on Detroit" is a very good book detailing K-F automobiles. Thank You for the videos.

Nice! Keep driving it. Basic cars from another era have always intrigued me.
Personally I grew up with a 1989 Camry Wagon. With plenty of parts cars I'm on my fourth and still not giving a shit about it. Just drove 50 miles through Cleveland and it was the oldest thing I spotted on the road.

I like the ones about the Frazer. My dad bought one new in 47. He owned it when I was born and it brings back memories. His major complaint was 47 outside door handles broke. Keep on saving them from the crusher.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Thanks also for the really nice note. Love the way it simply "purrs" along. Just like everything else did in its day. A "Rat Rod"?? Hell no!! It's simply a "maintained as needed- Survivor"!!! You MUST be living right!! Can't believe those old hinge screws just backed out like that!! I've had to use the old "impact screw driver" every time I wanted to adjust a old door. Including on my 57 Chevy. I hope you'll take us along when you "freshen" up that other motor. That would be "cool"!! BTW, you guys simply "have too much fun" installing mirrors so they match. ;o) Happy Thanksgiving to you and "the girls"!!! All the "a-gents" too!!!

Most enjoyable videos! The way you repair the unwanted treasures of time...is amazing! Very impressed by the way you fabricate parts, tools, & Macgiverize solutions to some challenging fixes! Awesome. I have a 1964 Wildcat convertible that I need to save from 40 years of being parked, and hope to use some of your positive economical logic to help me get it running in 2018! Cheers!
