This was easily the best episode so far of this era! Another Moffat banger
3:20 They've announced that Ruby will be in season 2. She's not going anywhere. They're just adding Varada Sethu. So it'll be three people, not two.
They mentioned that around 17:45
This episode was phenomenal! Best of the RTD 2 era in my opinion. I forgot that when Stephen Moffat isn’t writing his own long-form story, which he’s kind of bad at, when he’s just writing episodic one-offs, he’s a fantastic writer. This is some of the most Doctor Who-esque dialogue we’ve ever had. It was filled with so much tension. My shoulders still hurt. And it was filled with all of Moffat’s classics: religious soldiers, evil robots, faltering tech. And it finally felt like Ruby had a defining moment as a companion in defying the Doctor by handing him the casket and not tossing it. I also loved the inclusion of the “Skye Boat Song.”
Been a who freak since Tom Baker when I was 6. So amazing how everything changes and everything remains the same.
Love seeing Doctor Who reviews! Hope to see more. Nice job fellas
Great review guys as ever. I really enjoyed this episode along with my wife, we started (at least together) with Dr Who at the start of Matt Smith's tenure. My first Dr Who was Sylvester McCoy. I think this episode was a return to form as well for Steven Moffat who in my personal opinion went off the boil at the end of Peter Capaldi's tenure. Ncuit Gatwa and Millie Gibson feel like Matt Smith & Karen Gillian middle of their run and they are only 3 episodes in.
I believe Ruby is in season 2 because it’s all already been shot. I think the Disney contract was for x2 seasons (and maybe a mini story about something else that they’re shooting now) then we’ll see …
I think they announced that Millie is coming back for season 2
I can't get enough of Michaels great perspective on Dr. Who. Great show guys
Thanks guys for another great discussion. Enjoying Vogel's comments being a newbie to this world. Overall, Boom definitely my favourite so far, although with so much packed in I think it could have made a two parter (something Moffat was very good at, eg Zygon Invasion/Inversion in series 9). Thus giving more detail to why the Anglican Marines were on this planet, how long had they been there, fleshed out the more story in the base, with the stinger being Ruby getting shot at the end of part one and an epilogue of where Monday, Spice and the AI go after. I know with the confines of season length it would not have been possible but maybe with the amount of effort they put into building the barracks surely there must be an extended cut out there! Be interested to know what Vogel would have done if he could be show runner?
I am also concerned that with the iPlayer numbers not looking great (added to poor overnight UK viewership) that we will lose Dr Who to Disney completely after season two, especially when the British License fee (currently up for re-negotiation) could lead to a defunding of the BBC. Do you guys have any indication of what viewing on Disney+ is like? Or will we continue to suffer the NerdCryingManBabyDisparuHeel cabal crowing about how everything touched by Disney is dead!
Also as a fun side note Google our doctor learning only recently how to pronounce his own name, from his mother. It’s amazing.
I know a lot of people were really nervous about Disney getting their hands on the Doctor, but imo it’s been great so far!
Doesn't seem like they've had that much (if any) creative input on the show. Just seems like they've provided some budget and gained streaming rights
In Britain, it's listed as 'Series (season) 14'.
I loved this episode. I enjoy DW the most when it touches on socio-political commentary.
The DW show runners and BBC officially switched back to using 'season' to harken back to the original 1963-89 run that also used 'season.' Some schedule listings might not have caught on yet.
@@commandZee Really? I read it from the Radio Times listing, which used to be owned and published by the BBC. Not anymore. That's probably why they now have no clue about it. Smh
I took the view of faith in this episode wasn't being judged in and of itself as being bad, but just as in how John Vater was first portrayed when we see him. He is blind. So i'm taking it as they are saying faith is ok, blind faith is the dangerous kind. That's the kind of faith that stops people from asking questions.
With the high stakes and tension, this episode felt the most quintisentially Doctor Who. I think Ncuti did an excellent job putting his stamp on that classic Doctors' manic mix of intense emotions. Also, allegorical social commentary has alway been integral to the show regardless of show runner, it just got a bit too literal and cringey during the Chibnall era.
I enjoyed it but where is the overall story going? There's only 5 episodes left.
Best episode - for me - of the New New Who! ( 2024 episodes).
Honestly this episode annoyed me a bit because all the drama just came from every character other than the Doctor being super stubborn and nobody listening to a word anyone else said. Especially with the daughter, felt like she was written younger than she was. She should've had more sense.
The sharp scratch thing made me laugh though, its what nurses say to you in England before they stick a needle in you. Not sure if its the same in the US
