    In the behind the scenes video, RTD says:
    “Something profane has happened with the disturbance of this fairy circle. There’s been a lack of respect. The Doctor is normally very respectful of alien lifeforms and cultures, but now he’s just walked through something very powerful, and something’s gone wrong. But this something is corrected when Ruby has to spend a life of penitence in which she does something good, which brings the whole thing full circle. It forgives them in the end.”
    Personally, I also think it’s important to acknowledge the underlying theme of Ruby’s worst fear: abandonment. To appease this spirit and save the world, she had to confront her fear of everyone she loves abandoning her, just as her own birth mother did. The "Old woman" didn't really say anything to anyone...it was part of the penitence and her fear. She had to keep people at distance, like her boyfriend as she got older. When she needed someone to be there for her, to help her...by talking to the "old woman", they then had to abandon her.
    It was her curse and her power, which she used to stop Mad Jack.
    The final piece to break this curse was at the end, she reaches out to embrace this part of herself, fully accepting who she is in spite of her fear and is able to stop the "curse" and reset.

    I liked it. I think Ruby's punishment for breaking the Circle, Ruby lived her worse nightmare, and managed to come through it.

    Here’s my theory for the episode and what I think is happening!!!
    I think when they went up to the old ruby the old ruby’s face turned young and that scared everyone away I think this worked especially with rubys mum with tuff love I think older ruby told her mum she needs to run away and never see her again to keep her safe this would explain why her mum pushes ruby away by saying something so opposite to who her mum is by saying she’s not her real mum this is enough for ruby to feel abandoned and stay away from her mum allowing the timeline to remain. the reason mad jack and all the others ran away is because they also saw old ruby’s face turn young old ruby would also show mad jack his worst fears never being loved and firing a missile would only make him hated by his supporters the only people who blindly have any sort of love for him lousing that would be the worst thing ever to happen to him. The reason he would want to destroy the world is because he’s jealous of everyone who is loved. I think old ruby can also send information through peoples minds because she interacted with them when she was younger so older ruby told unit that she needed everyone to leave her younger self so she can stop mad jack who will cause world war 3 and fix the timeline. in the end ruby dies and her spirit goes back in her younger self, preventing the doctor to step changing the timeline back to normal!!! She can’t remember the future because it would cause a paradox .The circle definitely is the reason for ruby to be followed by her self and it’s implied by the doctor not stepping on it in the new timeline I like to think the circle was made by someone in Egypt who had a vision of the end of the world by a man named mad jack so they put a spell on the circle whoever steps on it will have the responsibility to save the world they would forgive mad jack for his intentions and write a note saying they love him rip knowing everyone dies and he will die unloved. the old ruby is giving sign language, to ruby by trying to give her clues of what she needs to do however because she’s 73 hards away she can’t understand them ! The old ruby wouldn’t remember that young ruby isn’t getting her singles because she can’t remember that long ago . In the new timeline mad jack dose go into power but has a change of heart last minute having a dream of being someone else being blown up this would reflect on his conscience and make him go out of power permanently!!!
    That’s my head cannon for this episode

    21:45 Like Kate said, there is no purpose, but she made herself one. She didn't "Find" her purpose... she made it. "When something can't be explained, you make up explanations for it". The reason she was put in this hell of abandonment and no close relationships - is nothing. It was an accident. There was no purpose. She did good by coming up with her own purpose and believing in it, but there was no 'reason' behind it. It's just a circumstance, and she did something with it on her own faith. If she'd decided to be more passive, then nothing would have happened at all and Mad Jack would have been the worst prime minister.

    Love that pub scene cos I've seen similar wind-ups in real life. The locals were messing with her, but that happens in pubs all over Ireland, Wales and Scotland, wind up the tourist with local legends. Breaking a fairy circle is still a big no no, and a lot of ancient Celtic pagan festivals are based around liminal spaces (like Samhain, which eventually became Halloween, a liminal space between summer and winter, the living and the dead).

    There is clearly problematic timelines that need to be addressed and as a timelord the Doctor has to find solutions... here we see the utilisation of the supernatural in combination with a profoundly resilient companion to tie-up an apocalyptic loose end. (at least that's what Kate told me 😉)

    I really liked 73 Yards. I thought this really showed what Millie Gibson can do as an actor. I thought the stuff with the Welsh Prime Minister was cool. But something about the way this ended is extremely unsatisfying. I get the point of it being existential horror. I don't get the point of it being a closed time-loop. Because then it doesn't matter. It doesn't change the characters. No one learns anything. Also, I wish they had done more with 40-year-old Ruby make-up-wise than just giving her librarian glasses, a different hairstyle, and maybe bigger fake boobs. Where were her wrinkles? They didn’t think to give her frown lines or crow's feet as they did with Amy in “The Girl Who Waited”. It was just very glaringly a 20-year-old playing a 40-year-old. And it took me out of the episode.

    • @ameliacraiig4193
      @ameliacraiig4193 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My mum at that age didn't have wrinkles. I suppose it depends on one's beauty-care regime. Lol. Also, the course of events DO matter, because nuclear war was prevented. He may still have been the "worst British PM", but the extent of his heinousness (in Ruby's corrected universe) doesn't reach the apex of world obliteration.
      It's unknown whether they learn anything or not. We are shown that there are the remnants of what happened, somewhere in Ruby's subconscious when she says at the end of the episode, she's been to Wales three times instead of two (said previously); meaning that there's a small part of this experience that remains in her memory & maybe in her psyche.

    When you mentioned 'something that happened in your past', I wished you elaborated on what you meant. I've mentioned on a couple reactions channels that I think it is a metaphor for sexual assault.

      Huh??? No idea what you are talking about.

    • @mixofreak
      @mixofreak หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JohnRochaSays now that I'm at home, I can copy and paste my longer explanation from a different reaction channel:
      People who have been assaulted (as well as bystanders) often assign 'reasons' they were assaulted, and while many have sympathy, there is also a cultural shame in having been assaulted that makes people keep just out of reach with pity instead. Close to offer comfort, but unable to truly understand, and not wanting to think about it, just not wanting it to happen to them.
      It isn't the fault of anyone but the one who assaulted, but accepting that takes time, and anyone who has been assaulted lives with that trauma as best they can for the rest of their life.
      There is no rhyme or reason, no ward to prevent it other than being alert, and helping others spot the signs ahead in their path that the one assaulted recognizes.

    • @JohnRochaSays
      @JohnRochaSays  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mixofreak Yes but I don’t know what you’re referring to specifically. Do you mean how I was indicating how the show was implying that the women with the Welsh PM had been sexually assaulted by him???

    • @mixofreak
      @mixofreak หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JohnRochaSays no, no, sorry. I was referring to at 13:40 on for that short bit. Not so much what 'you' as in the audience, but 'the person affected by the entity'. You specifically said,
      'What is she symbolizing? Like, this thing about yourself, this lingering thing you've done in your past that you don't want to confront that if people were to find out about it they'd run screaming from you? This thing that hangs, some of us have that thing, you know, that hangs over us.'
      That.
      That is what I was referring to.
      It isn't about what someone did or didn't do, but what happened to them, and how so many people treat others differently after finding out that they were a victim of sexual assault.
      Now, it might not have at all been intended by the creators, but to me, the Semper Distans entity fits as a perfect metaphor for sexual assault, and the specific inclusion of what Roger did to Marti only reinforces the metaphor with how Ruby herself doesn't speak up at the time she hears the implication from Marti... and later apologizes to Marti for not having done anything earlier. When Ruby finally does make the Semper Distans entity appear next to Roger and he runs, Marti is the one celebrating, knowing that someone did something to him that ruined his plans, his life, perhaps not as much as he did to hers... but enough to feel vindication. It doesn't erase what happened, but it showed sympathy and a touch of justice, even if it was of a supernatural, unexplained sort. He also only says 'ask her' without explaining who 'her' is, which could fit toward guilt and potential exposure of his sexual assault of Marti, in addition to being-like everyone else-unable and unwilling to simply state why he ran and what was said to him.
      'She looks like what she looks like. She looks like what she is.' Abandonment, and disassociation, not seeing someone as a person, just as a statistic, a victim, a faceless, distant blur, some of the worst things after sexual assault that disconnect necessary avenues for handling such tragic circumstances. And then, on top of abandonment, there is the acidic, self-justifying lashing out against Ruby by her mum, telling her that she wasn't really her daughter, and that even her birth mother didn't want her. Further disconnection and abandonment, but specifically, the kind of rationalization that people use to exclude themselves from imagining the possibility that they too could just as easily become a victim of sexual assault, and worse, putting the blame on the victim that they somehow 'did something', 'dressed a certain way', 'said something', and so forth, that somehow made them a bigger target than if they hadn't done that.
      As I said, it might not have been intended, but it certainly seems to fit to me.

    • @JohnRochaSays
      @JohnRochaSays  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mixofreak Ohhhhh no. I wasn’t referring to sexual assault at all as that is something I’ve never experienced and couldn’t speak about too deeply. I meant these things that happen in our lives and we build them up to be these horrible things and attach so much shame to them that we fear them being found out and it paralyzes us. A lot of people have that for many reasons and it keeps us from achieving what we can achieve in this world. Or keeps us from enjoying our achievements when we get to the top.
