Ruby even stepped on a butterfly in the first episode and changed history. I think this could be a theme…hopefully.

I think they will 100% answer the questions in this episode, RTD doesn't usually leave things unanswered, even if it's at the very end of the Doctor's era

Great discussion. But, I don't think old Ruby was saying, "don't step on the fairy circle." Lol. I think I guessed that, even before RTD's hint on the behind-the-scenes show that it wasn't something so benevolent.
Rocha, try Torchwood (anagram of Doctor Who). You may enjoy it. It's a ride.

"I put Doctor Who episodes in the same category as Neil Gaiman fiction."
I wonder if he dug the two episodes that Gaiman actually wrote. (Assuming he's gotten to them yet.)

I think what I find amazing about this is that not only is this a Doctor lite episode this early in the season, but I think this was one of the earliest to be filmed, if not the first, as Ncuti was finishing off filming Sex education, so it made sense to take advantage of having more Ruby than the Doctor. So in that case I think she carries the episode brilliantly.
I would argue she doesn’t look anywhere near 40 years old later on. She did look slightly older, but 40 odd?? Nahh. But that aside, I loved this episode.

Rocha? Vogel? Did I already thank you two for reviewing Doctor Who?
    Great ep, fantastic review!
I was with you Rocha, felt the emotion/heartbreak and symbolism as we saw Ruby go through life with personal baggage...i was a bit iffy on her as the companion so far, but fully on board now. Just an amazing performance. I'm a fan since a young child in the 80s, and I'd say rtd perfectly took a lot of inspiration from classic era Who, cinematography from Chibnall's era w/ Jodie, Moffat timey whimeyness, and a Dead Zone-esque story.
By the by, the thing with Ruby asking if she can pay with her phone at the pub? It's a British in-joke that Wales/Welsh are the butt of jokes as a backwater, behind the times...American equivalent is hicks/hillbillies in some kinda. Welsh language and culture seen as quiant, superstitious and lower class.
The supernatural bend definitely stems from incorporating The Toymaker bending reality, bring his pantheon...rtd has some plans to massage the complicated Doctor Who canonical mythos this way as well

This episode unsettled me in ways I haven't felt in a long time. It was expertly written and directed, but yeah it just a gut punch of an episode.
Also John, when it comes to TORCHWOOD, you should definitely watch it, it is completely your Jam. Season 3 is one of the single best seasons of TV ever imo.

John and Michael, if you are curious enough, Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood has a five episode series, Children of Earth that is BRILLIANT. Peter Capaldi is in it and I can almost guarantee it will wow you both.

I've watched too much Doctor Who (and sci fi stuff in general) to have had any other thought than when that old woman appeared it was a grown up Ruby. Timey wimey, baby, timey wimey. It's a nice trope though, and they pulled it off really well here.

Ruby doesn't have to remember . WE saw Ruby's life and the type of companion qualities that she is learning now from being with the Doctor.
What RaG did to Marti was bad enough for the audience to feel as Ruby feels about him. Why have him pull the wings off flies?

I really liked 73 Yards. I thought this really showed what Millie Gibson can do as an actor. I thought the stuff with the Welsh Prime Minister was cool. But something about the way this ended is extremely unsatisfying. I get the point of it being existential horror. I don't get the point of it being a closed time-loop. Because then it doesn't matter. It doesn't change the characters. No one learns anything. Also, I wish they had done more with 40-year-old Ruby make-up-wise than just giving her librarian glasses, a different hairstyle, and maybe bigger fake boobs. Where were her wrinkles? They didn’t think to give her frown lines or crow's feet as they did with Amy in “The Girl Who Waited”. It was just very glaringly a 20-year-old playing a 40-year-old. And it took me out of the episode.

  • @tehnemox

73 yards was an ok episode. It was interesting and creative.
The only thing I dislike about it is that it means absolutely nothing. We never find out what the old woman was saying to have that effect of people, including her mom, or how Ruby somehow upon death went back. And I could forgive all that, but the fact that Ruby is not aware of what happened or could have happened, nobody learns anything, and nothing changes. It makes it so the events of the episode might as well not have happened because they had zero impact on anybody. Even Ruby stoping Mad Jack meant nothing because now it will still happen.
The episode was literally a nothingburger in terms of impact or growth on the main characters or the universe as a whole.
Interesting to watch, and fun, but ultimately pointless.

Wasn’t a fan of this episode. It felt very obvious she was the old woman from the very beginning. More importantly for me though they hinted at none of it ever happening as the doctor still references the welsh leader being the worst one ever still.
