Why is the Tesla Model S so addictive to drive?

  • Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review a lot of cars. Today I’m driving a 2019 Tesla Model S. This particular car is the P100D, recently renamed the Tesla Model S Performance. Sitting above the Long Range Model S in Tesla’s lineup, the Performance is a grade-A blast of electric car fun.
    To be honest, I might’ve gone overboard with all the full-throttle acceleration. But honestly, can you blame me? The Model S Performance can spring from zero to 60 miles per hour in right about 3 seconds. But with the optional Ludicrous Mode the 0-60 time drops to 2.4 seconds, according to Tesla. That’s properly insane but even further off the deep end is Ludicrous Plus Mode. After thoroughly warming the battery Ludicrous Plus improves acceleration even further. I tried it out, safely of course, with my daughter along for the ride.
    With all that addictive acceleration talk aside, I assure you I also drove the 2019 Model S like a sane person and thoroughly investigated the interior. Lastly, Tesla ditched their Standard Performance Model S on the same day this video was uploaded. So, the update I included in the video already needs an update. Sorry about that.
    And just so the premise is ultra-clear, this is not a comprehensive review but rather a casual look at the 2019 Tesla Model S, while I live my normal life. Simple. Fun!

    I love my Tesla, it is the best car ever made. The fact that this car has haters is mind blowing, what other car company has so many people who dedicate themselves to hating a car the same way as people do about Tesla? Because it forces them to confront something about themselves that they don't want to. Tesla isn't a cult, it's just a good product, and that is including the faults and shortcomings that you will deal with, even with every legitimate criticism of the vehicle, IT STILL is the best car pound for pound, you can spend your money on.

    • @theconformist2399
      @theconformist2399 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Calling it the best car pound for pound is a bit of an exaggeration. There are plenty of faults with Tesla's vehicles, just like other cars. Whether you like them or not will depend on your desires and needs. They're wonderful cars, but aren't going to appeal to everyone - which, again, is perfectly fine. Making a car that appeals to literally *everyone* means it's *loved* by no one.
      I test drove a Model S, but just couldn't get over the lackluster interior. I get that the instant torque of EVs is fun and fascinating (seriously, it's *really* fun to stomp the accelerator), but I didn't find it appealing enough to shell thousands extra out compared to a similarly equipped ICE vehicle. As Micah said in the vehicle, the Model S' interior doesn't really feel as luxurious as that of an Audi/BMW/Mercedes.
      Does any of that matter to you? If not, then go ahead! The Model S is a fantastic car, and your money is going towards the technology aspect of the car. For others, perhaps not. None of this is a knock on Tesla, but the whole, "Tesla's cars are the best value out of any car out there!" needs to stop. I hate it when fanboys of other brands pull that nonsense, and I hate it when Tesla's fans do the same.

      theconformist, what cheeses me are the trolls who post on Tesla channels, yammering about panel gaps and lack of Nurburgring performance. Wankers, it is the best car ever made, my P85D is the 2nd safest car on the road (1st Model 3), gets free Supercharging for life and 98 MPGe.

    Micah - I've found that a cell phone in the same pocket as the key fob will prevent the car from seeing the fob. So if you had a phone in your pocket with your key, that would explain why the handles didn't present when you approached the car.

    • @evogreen81
      @evogreen81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can second that Colin, if i have the fob in the same pocket as my cell phone the signal must be blocked and the door handles will not respond. Looks like that was the case as once he removed the fob from his pocket the door handles presented.

  • @larryspiller15

    Average American distance driven per day is 29.2 miles, charging speed of a model S on 120v 15A outlet is 3 miles per hour. If your home 10 hours a day (most people are) then 10x3=30 miles charge added. Looking at it from empty to full is kind of short sited because you would just leave with 80% every day rather then not charging at all for many days and the trying to go empty to full, it just wouldn't make sense. That being said it would be ideal to have a dryer outlet for the extra ability but most people could still get by without.

    The problem experienced with the self presenting door handles could be a couple of things.
    (i) the auto presenting can be turned of on the big screen as an option (that is how I configured mine).
    (ii) having a mobile phone near the key fob stops the car and fob communication (I keep mine in different shirt pockets to avoid that).

    I remember learning how to drive and my Dad was adamant about only using the right foot for the accelerator and brake pedal. In an emergency braking moment, like when someone pulls out in front of you and you have a fraction of a second to hit the brakes, if you're using your left foot for the brake you could accidentally press both and slam into the car instead of stopping had you just used your right foot only. I am very surprised you drive that way. The left foot is only for the clutch pedal.

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure your dad was well-intentioned but he wasn't quite right about left-foot braking. As with anything, there are ways to do it incorrectly but the best drivers in the world (rally, F1, Trophy Truck) use their left foot to brake. It's a common and useful racing technique that has direct applications when driving on public streets.
      For example, in the scenario you described (car pulls out in front while driving) wouldn't it be faster to press the brake with your left foot which is already hovering over the brake pedal versus moving your right foot from the accelerator? In street driving my left foot isn't sitting on the dead pedal, it's ready to press the brake pedal...without actually resting on the brake pedal of course.
      If you're curious why braking with the left foot is the preferred method for professional drivers check out this video from one of my trips to rally school. th-cam.com/video/ZbZaFp_NIPs/w-d-xo.html
      Or better yet, watch Rally icon Colin McRae explain the wisdom of left-foot braking. th-cam.com/video/D1_u3-eyXmU/w-d-xo.html

Just my own thoughts on seeing beautiful classic cars on the road.

    I'm the 10th like and i have a question , can you instal a tesla supercharger at home ?

    • @jazminethomas3619
      @jazminethomas3619 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Level 2 chargers are readily available for home installation, and Tesla sells its own brand for about $500. Some choose to install a NEMA 14-50 outlet, which is similar to a clothes dryer or stove outlet. Both of those options give a full charge in 8+ hours or so, which is perfect for overnight charging, when electricity billing rates are cheapest. As for an actual level 3 "supercharger," it is apparently possible to have one installed for home or business use, but there are three main problems; the cost ($100,000+), the power grid / wiring requirements, and the accelerated degradation of the lithium ion batteries from frequent DC fast charging. Level 2 at home charging with occasional level 3 supercharging , for long trips, seems to be what works best, and is cheapest.

    Also - why do you have your regen-braking set to "low" such that you have to hit the brake and "gas" at the same time? Why not just set it to "normal" and then lifting your right foot will start you decelerating, smoother than you can do manually.

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colin Fox I don’t know, man. I’m awfully smooth. 😉
      Honestly, I’ve tried one-pedal driving plenty of times and always prefer using the brake to decelerate. It’s a muscle memory thing, likely carried over from my experiences driving on track.
      That said, one day when I finally buy a Tesla I’ll train myself to love maximum regen. Promise!

    • @bryandbaker
      @bryandbaker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Micah Muzio it’s an incredibly stupid, unsafe, and energy inefficient habit. And you’re an automotive journalist? It’d be like Gordon Ramsey insisting, on camera to both use a microwave and putting metal pots into it.
      If it was really about being smooth, you’d turn on full regen and learn to SLOWLY and subtly let up on the accerator (with your RIGHT foot) before finally releasing and waiting till about 4mph to apply the brake WITH YOUR RIGHT FOOT.
      Sack up and change that habit.

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bryan Baker I’ll happily concede that utilizing maximum regen is the most efficient approach when driving an electric car. But describing left-foot braking as “stupid and unsafe” is just plain ignorant.
      There is a reason why rally schools grille this technique into its students (and I’ve been to quite a few). Transitioning one’s foot from the accelerator to the brake and back sacrifices valuable time and yes, smoothness.
      Is left-foot braking a critical technique that every driver needs to use? Nope. Nor does every home cook making meatloaf need to express Ramsey-esque perfection.
      But if you want to drive fast and safely on loose or slippery surfaces, professionals will insist you use both feet. Granted that’s a comparatively rare use case for most drivers but it’s a skill I choose to keep fresh in my daily life.
      Guess which of my feet is pressing the brake pedal while drifting this Mercedes-AMG E 63 S? th-cam.com/video/rjtr8iUq9vU/w-d-xo.html

    • @bryandbaker
      @bryandbaker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Micah Muzio hmmm. I’m sure we can agree that even awesome people (you) and their awesome videos (yours) can still be flawed. But I do stand by my criticism-yes, two footed driving is unsafe, in part because in an emergency situation under duress you’re much more likely to make a mistake, and much more likely to stop less quickly.
      What am I missing? Wherein lies my ignorance? And Tesla’s?
      Thanks for replying, and I do enjoy your work.

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bryan Baker First, I love that we can have a civil discussion without reverting the typical internet flame war. 🧡
      Second, I don’t think we’re far apart in our positions. The missing piece is an understanding of the left-foot technique, which is understandable given how few people use it.
      You’re absolutely right that if someone with no experience tries to left-foot brake in an emergency, bad things will happen. Like any technique it requires practice to develop proper muscle memory.
      With that in mind, when driving in traffic I typically cover the brake pedal with my left foot. Without actually pressing it of course, I don’t want to confuse drivers behind me or needlessly wear/heat the brakes.
      In an emergency there’s no transition time moving my right foot from pedal to pedal. My left foot immediately presses the brake pedal shortening braking distances when every foot counts.
      I would never suggest every driver needs to left-foot brake but for those who want to drive quickly on ice or dirt its incredibly helpful. Shorter stopping distances in on-street emergency situations is a happy side benefit.
      Thanks for hearing me out. Cheers!

    Also - why do people keep saying this isn't a luxury car? Because it doesn't have diamond stitching on the seats? Who gives a f*** about that? It has the most amazing drive system, motors, infotainment system, design efficiency and beauty out there. Sure it doesn't have "pick your colour" interior lighting or perfume sprayers, but it has dog mode, ludicrous mode and autopilot. For every feature you can list on another "luxury" car, I can list a feature that the Tesla has which your "luxury" car doesn't.
    I own a 2013 Model S P85+, and I've owned Mercedes, BMW & Land Rover in the past. I would never buy any of those again - they were very expensive money pits, and no more luxurious than my S. In fact they were less, because the leather quality in them was much lower than in my Tesla.
    The only *real* example of a "luxury complaint" that Micah presented was the scraping of the console lid on the side material. That's a legitimate complaint. The ONLY legitimate complaint so far, since it's the only one actually specified.

      I believe it is not a luxury car as there is no "oil smell" to it. Elon should tone down the acceleration of the engine, delay instant torque, and add an "oil perfume function" and a large speaker to put oily noise. This will allow the model S to compete hand in hand with the oil ICE cars

      You're not alone. Touch screen controls are not ergonomic or intuitive. They can functional, but that doesn't mean they're superior to physical controls - particularly when you need to do adjust something without looking at it.
      Plenty of people complained about Honda getting rid of a volume knob and physical AC controls, despite the touchscreen controls working fine. Why? Because they're not intuitive to use without looking at them. So Honda reversed course and put the physical controls back. Likewise here.

    Although this car seems good, from the perspective of someone from Malaysia, this is definitely not a luxury sedan. The problem with this car, is that it is waaay behind ICE cars that we have in Malaysia. My suggestion to tesla is that, they should add a large speaker outside that blasts engine sound, they should add an "oil perfume" that gives an oily smell around and inside the vehicle, they should reduce instant torque, they should use cheaper parts so that the car have 60%-70% less life expectancy and faster end of life, they should reduce the resale value of the car by 30%, they should reduce the speed limit of the engine, they should randomly add holes in a car where you need to put in oil often, they should make sure the parts break down more often, and most importantly, they should create a smoke generator at the back of the car that creates smoke at the back and polute the environment. If elon can do this, Model S will be able to compete hand-in-hand with the luxury market.

    I really like Tesla and the tech they employ, but not being able to get into your car when you need to because it hasn't decided to activate the door handles is a pretty significant fail. Hey, why is that person walking around his Tesla in the pouring rain, looking confused and getting thoroughly soaked? Has he lost something? Why doesn't he just get into his car? Oh, it's because his car hasn't decided to recognize his presence yet and activate the door handles.

      Meadmaker 452 I’m glad you commented. It lets me offer some clarification.
      Tesla reached out to me and explained that if the key is within proximity of the vehicle for 1 minute after the door handles present themselves they will automatically retract. At that point gently pressing the retracted handle will cause them to extend.
      I’m guessing an owner would get used to this but as a reviewer it was not intuitive behavior.
