Cracking video! Always preferred the S over the X and 3. The nonstop from Edinburgh to London you did crowed the S for me. Damn shame Tesla haven’t supplied them for a few years now in the UK.
Another great video, thanks Richard. I have a 2018 MS, my mate has a 2021 M3 LR . I have driven them both and been driven in both as passenger. You just hit all the key points so beautifully for both cars. My MS is on 19s and I indeed get about 10% more range than the MS in the video. Can't touch my mate's M3 though, it is amazing for economy. I don't know how you survived on MCU1 which was on my car when I bought it from Tesla. I used to regularly drive off the 'map' and be on a blank white screen, especially on the less travelled roads like the A361 in your video. The MCU 2 upgrade fixed that and now I enjoy the screen the way it was intended. I think the car struggled on 3G but works properly on 4G connectivity. Back to the 2 cars, the MS is significantly bigger in the back which is pivotal for me for when I carry my son, his 'ample' wife and our granddaughter in a child seat. Rear width is so important for us (and clearly for my son...). For me it is MS all the way.
Great video as always and nice comparison. We have a Model S here in Australia. It's an older 2015 85D with free supercharging/connectivity, MCU2 upgrade and CCS charging. Brilliant car, fantastic for Mountain bike riding and camping it's unbelievable how much storage space it has. It's only downside is it's external size, but we live in a fairly rural area and are picky where we park. We sometimes have to park a bit further away to avoid door dings, but have always done that with any car we've owned anyway.
Great video Richard. With your vast knowledge of all Tesla models, can you do a video of battery degradation after 40,000 miles or so? Cheers from Australia.
I have an S85 RWD and an M3P. They're entirely different cars and I love that. There is a sense of plushness about the S. Our M3 is the daily and it's great around town and you don't need the Performance really. But each time I get back in the S, generally on the weekend for trips to Ikea, put our bikes on the roof, or just out for dinner. The S is not as fast, but it has more panache and still looks like the $150,000 we spent on it. The airsuspension, sunroof, seats, carbon fibre dash and heads up just complete it. They also don't look like an Uber.
I have a model 3 LR but have always preferred the Model S for it’s looks but I’m put off by it’s size. Where I live there are a lot of multi-stories that have really narrow bays, ramps, turning area’s etc… and my model 3 just about copes being smaller but I could imagine the S being a nightmare for everyday city driving, parking etc…. Maybe that’s a good suggestion for a challenge video or something where you show a Model S & a Model 3 vs an NCP car park!
Another great video by Richard and the team. Totally a model S fan here, would not swap my P85 2014 S now 95k miles. Purchased from yourself 2 years ago and sent many others to you since, including 2 more recommendations to colleagues today. The premium connectivity indeed does carry on with the MCU2 upgrades. Also love putting a mountain bike in the back without removing wheels (yes seats down and full rubber mats to catch all the mud)
@@TraderJono I got a set from ebay that has a lip around them to hold liquid and then used sheeting from a project that I had finshed to make a roll out cover for the back of the seats when folded down, that drains down into the rubber areas, so can then simply lift out drain away and wipe.
Which one would I prefer ? Probably the MS, though I do have fairly limited personal experience of one. I have driven a couple of M3s (LRs both), and generally agree with your opinion. However, my buddy from Netherlands brought over to FC Live his 2023 M3 Std, and I was surprised how forgiving his suspension was. The car still steered very nimbly, was very comfortable and the seats were fine, though the headrest did hit me in the back of the head until I inclined the seat far back enough - something I hadn't noticed before. It was great once set properly. And another thing - this was the first M3 Std I'd been a passenger in where the owner had stomped on, err... demonstrated the performance. And whaddya know? The slow Tesla isn't that slow. In fact it's pretty bloody quick. And the overall efficiency beats my ID3 P-Pro. I can get there in mine, but the M3 can do it all day. Really nice car. Like practically everyone realises once they get in one. 😊
I had the same issue with my headrest (my head bounced off it alot) as a laugh I took my sons neck support cushion from his gaming chair and its a complete game changer haha
I was lookikg at both options to replace my leased I Pace when it ends next year. The deal breaker for the model S for me was the insurance quote over £2400.
Hey, thanks for a good story and information about the 2 cars. One thing I wish was that you might have stopped somewhere at a Supercharger, so we could have seen how the charge speeds, especially on the older 100D. Peek power and the car's charging curve Thanks for a good video. Regards Mikkel
Great content and thank you. I have been following you since 2020 when I leased my Model 3 Performance, a company car which I had for three years. It’s now my own money and I am so torn between these exact two cars Richard, I really don’t need the brutality of the performance. At 58 though the Model S is really now reaching out to me. I now need to spend some time in one. Thank you again.
I have both in the family MS 2016 facelift and M3P 2020 and i did drove both for long trips (5000+ KMs roundtrips from Netherlands) and I must say that S is a better cruiser indeed, but it has 2 major drawbacks compared to Model 3: missing door pockets (with kids is a big deal) and the fact that you need to cary the CCS adapter and make sure not to loose it every time you charge. On the other hand M3 charges faster on V3 superchargers but at higher speeds (over 120KM/h) the windnoise is pretty loud compared to the S. But i must say I enjoyed driving both precisely because they are different. Hope it helps somebody!
As long as the mileage wasn't too high, I'd have an S any day. I have thought about buying one from Richard. The cars in stock look to be in very good condition.
Well, it's July '24 & I just found this video of the fantastic MS100D I bought from Richard a year ago! I love the car, especially this one with the Obsidian paint job, the trick suspension which remembers where you lifted and especially the 21's which look brilliant. You might have noted the little after-market carbon boot spoiler the first owner added, which looks great too. It's a superb ride, quiet and comfortable and the economy/range is better than I need (over 11K miles, it has cost me around 2.5 p per mile when charging at home on Octopus Go). The Superchargers are more of course but it's less than 10% of my mileage. I looked at MYs both new and used and couldn't find anything that matched the S. I believe that good ones will age well and become a classic. So glad I bought it and very happy to see it featured in the video.
I know it's not the best looking car ever but I think the Model S has aged elegantly well especially the front half, I can't help not really being impressed with the other models as they just all look too top heavy when you want low and wide as a look
I prefer the Model S. Looks, feel, presence, driving dynamics (the model 3 is a sportier drive, but the weight of the S makes it feel much more stable. I don't like the way it feels when a semi truck is next to you in the model 3). The sound system, the center pod behind the steering wheel, the hatch.....the model S was designed to be a better, more luxury experience and it shows. To be fair....I'm biased. I own a 2014 Model S. I'll be moving on from it in 2024 to buy a newer, used P100D or 100D. I'm hooked and am addicted to my free supercharging and free data. With that said, early 2017, late 2016 cars are my target for the next one.
Awesome video, Richard. I have a Model 3 and I reckon the Model S with those wheels looks astonishingly better. I've never driven a S but I imagine is considerably more comfortable. The 3 is firm, indeed. Overall the 3 suits my usage better but I hope I get the chance to drive a Model S to feel the differences. 👌
I owned a 2018 model 3 lr for 3 years and I loved the efficiency and speed & clarity of the infotainment system. I currently own a 2017 100d and love the hatchback feature & smoothness of the suspension. Those are my two biggest observations and I certainly prefer the model s over the 3 now. I used to own manyyyyyy BMWs before and the model 3 tried to imitate the handling as much as possible but wasn't quite there yet. You can feel each and every bump on the road which is somewhat expected from a sporty car but you'll never feel a jarring bump in a bmw 3.
Great Video Richard - I was surprised you only get 290/300 miles from a 100d, what would you get from the 90d or 85d? real world. I'd like to know which model S is the sweet spot? Year ? Battery size and what price to expect to pay ?
If I was allowed not to have a new car every lease period, I'd have had the S. Everything Richard has shown is what the 3 is missing. Jaw dropped when the extra stalk for wipers appeared! That Mod 3 LR does kick out some crazy efficiency figures though. Way better than I can manage.
Also, in USA, a brand new modelY (after incentives) can be had for the price of a moderately used 100D- tough choices all around but great for consumers
Great comparison. On a similar theme, I've been thinking of replacing my 2018 Model X with a Model Y. The main thing that's keeping me from doing this is I've got free Supercharging on my X. I'm also a bit worried that I'll miss some of the quality features in the X such as auto door closing, soft closing, 2nd screen, and the large front windscreen. Also I think the X is also just a better quality car. The reasons for getting a Y would be having a new car and warranty, better efficiency.and upgraded chip and screen (although no issues yet with my X). Edit: over the lifetime of my X I'm getting around 350wh/mile which I don't think is too bad for such a big, heavy car.
Hi Richard, I was wondering if you could showcase the wear and tear on the leather seats of the both Models. It would be helpful to see how they hold up over time as company cars. Thank you
Who’s Simon? I’m Richard. But anyway yes well we could but too late to edit it now. Generally both fine. Model S with actual leather gets a bit more patina of course. But it’s less sweaty than the newer faux leather
Our 2018 model s with 84k miles, vegan leather comes up like new! Leather seats age, like all other cars but the vegan interior seems to not deteriorate 😎
@@raheeb1 I have completed my comparison! There are positives for both. I will not be switching at this point I still believe I have the right car. I have listed the positives of each by comparison. M3P 1. Better handling on country roads, the steering is more "direct" at higher speeds. It's a small difference but enough to notice 2. Narrower and more nimble this goes with the above point. The M3 really does do better on English tight country roads. 3. M3P tech is slightly better even though most of it is in my car which is 8 years older! The infotainment system is snappier albeit all the same features. It has the Ryzen chip making it quicker to load things and fewer freeze moments. 4. The big arm rest is very nice and better than the pre 2021 (US plaid) MS however I will say I like that my pre 2016 MS has a big open space in front of the arm rests because I put my daily work bag there and I always keep my car clean because I don't have much storage to dump crap in! I genuinely feel fortunate to have the option of not having extra storage which I could add whenever I wanted to. 5. For those who like storage the M3 comes with the traditional door bins and the pockets on the back of the front seats 6. The M3P feels like a sports car when driving at high speeds, going round sharp bends and accelerating hard out of them. 7. What I like about the M3P is one moment I can be driving super efficiently because the M3 efficiency is sooo good especially over my MS. And then the next moment driving like a rally driver on country roads 🤣 the contrast is awesome 8. This M3P has the newest autopilot whereas my 2015 MS has AP1. One thing I did notice I couldn't use my wheel weight to do hands off driving on the M3P whereas on on the MS I can be hands off for hours 😆 I know I shouldn't use one but I do because the amount of times I don't see the "keep hands on warnings" and get kicked off AP for the rest of the trip was getting annoying. I still keep my hand gently on the wheel I promise 😜 Model S P90DL positives in comparison 1. Launch mode is so good I was very underwhelmed with manually launching the M3P it takes a split moment for the power to really kick in which imo loses some of the fun but then again I'm used to my P90D. 2. Ride comfort in the MS with it's air suspension is noticeably better it effectively floats over the roads, pot holes and because of it's width it also moves over most speed bumps with a lot more ease and I don't have to slow down so much unlike the M3P. The smart air suspension feature I'm the MS is very much appreciated. 3. The boot hatch and boot space is so good in the MS I forgot how much I appreciated it. I once drove a M3 SR+ for a week and I had to take my wheel off the bike to fit it in the boot. Whereas the model S it'll fit in no problem. 4. I know this is a vanity point but I get way more "looks" in the MS than I did in any of the M3s I drove. 5. The tech in any MS that came with the premium packages like subzero, lighting etc are now only just recently matched by the M3P 2022 onwards because previously it didn't have the heated steering wheel which now experiencing having one in my MS I don't know how I lived life without it before Tesla 🤣 6. My high fidelity sound system is better than the premium one in the M3P 7. This one's opinion however the MS looks better from the front and the back 😬 8. The MS even as old as mine still feels like I'm driving a more premium car whereas the M3P does feel really nice but not quite as luxurious, in fact I can't quite put my finger on it. 9. Less phantom braking on my MS. AP1 isn't as jumpy in stop and start traffic or brakes randomly as the new version sometimes does.
@@peterwilliamson1825 All Model S' before 2021 have the type 2 style charger as standard. I have the CCS adapter for the V3 chargers. The one I go to most often is a V2. But I'm glad I have CCS otherwise that'd be an annoying surprise arriving at a charger in need of juice 😆 Good point though I barely use superchargers and I'm so used to using the adapter that I forgot that it is more fluid on newer models or any 3 and Y at CCS chargers.
Great video Rich. Model S was/is my choice out of the two. The S has the looks, the hatch, the closer normal car feel (not just a single screen), portrait mode (I prefer for all but watching video), more space …and did I mention looks? 😜 However, the 3 is not a huge compromise. I’ve not had the pleasure of driving the performance or long range 3 but my SR model 3 experience was better than expected. Steering felt more solid, interior felt better built, less rattles, less noise, good economy and faster charging at a supercharger. I did pick a model S with a pretty high spec though and premium interior plus UHF sound were a must for me. I’d need at least the LR model 3 to keep me musically happy. I could live with a LR model 3 …but I’ll always look more fondly at an S (beauty and beast) 😎
My mate has an S100D on a 17 plate with free supercharging. I believe he is the 2nd owner too. Here in Exeter. I also have a 19 plate Model 3 Performance with unlimited premium connectivity.
You can get a MTB bike in a model 3 - you don’t need a hatchback opening to get a bike in. This review is great, but its a bit like comparing a BMW 3 series versus a 5 series ? Obvs we’d all have the S but mileage and condition are the trade-off
Yes, I really love the model S and hope to find one in my area (Suburban Detroit area in the US) for a reasonable price. I’ve been watching Cars&Bids and have seen several going for decent prices.
Great video, thanks. I have thought about getting an M3 but not taken the plunge. This video has muddied the waters for me really. It seems that Tesla has taken a lot of stuff off the spec sheet to make the M3. i.e. the binnacle in front of the driver, the wiper controls and a few more. If the M3 had those I may well have bought one. Oh yes, and I agree about the lack of leg support on the M3.
Prefer the model S over model 3 any day, it just looks so much better. I'm picking up my first Tesla model s this Thursday, after watching your videos and researching I've been converted to buy EV. I was skeptical about EVs, you sure have made it more convincing for me. Once again thank you very much for all the reviews and advice throughout all your videos. I did want to buy it from you, but you didn't have the one I wanted, I wanted a blue one with cream interior. Ordered from Tesla used inventory. Hope my life with an EV is pleasant. 2018 75d will be my new car, thats how far my budget was.
Great choice mate. Welcome to the Model S fan club 😆👍 I love my P90DL! Amazing the features that they had way back when. Most of the features in the newest M3s were in high spec 2015 MS'
Excited for you! Please comment on how long your range is on the 75d real world as I was surprised that the 100d only got 300 miles when it is supposed to get 400
agree with you Richard the S is much sharper looking that the 3 or Y in fact the looks are one main reason I didnt buy Tesla but went for the Quattro Q4 which I really like!
I have used / owned both of these and my preference would be the S, but not with that awful wood dash they put in it (alcantara or carbon fibre all the way - I think Richard still converts these?). The 3 has a more modern interior and the screen functionality is better, it has sharper handling and is easier to drive around town and park. The 3 also has faster charging and a heat pump. The S though has a much better exterior look (with chrome delete and bigger 21" wheels), and the ride comfort is much better, especially on the later performance Raven models. If you are just getting I to EV's then the S will be less of a jump and is more conventional, the 3 is modern and will appeal to a person who likes minimalism.
Thanks Richard, i'm at the stage of considering my first EV which due to their cost will be a used one. Much prefer the Model S but my worry is the insurance cost and not having any warranty on a very complicated vehicle. The Model 3 LR would fit the bill for me, but...not happy that it doesn't have a drivers display in front of me like the 'S' Which brings me to a suggestion of a video for you? There are an increasing amount of low cost aftermarket driver displays available for the Model 3 which connect easily to the OBD port under the rear part of the centre console. Think this might interest a lot of people like me. Any chance of you checking some out?
Model S FTW! 🙂 (We have both). You haven't mentioned that the model S weighs 350kg more than the 3. At least my S70D does, don't know is a 100D weighs even more. Good video, keep on making them👍🏻
I used to have an MS100D - Richard knows because he bought it off me for a fair price. I got a new company car - an M3P. M3P is fun. Charging speed is so much better but overall the MS100D was a better car. I do miss the free supercharging!
Superchargers aren't CCS. If you're talking about DC fast chargers, the Model 3 wins in charging speed because it charges faster and has a smaller battery to fill.
The only thing I've found in my S that is actually inferior compared to the 3 is that it can't reasonably be tracked as both motor and brakes overheat quicker. But the plaid seems to fix that too.
I want a model s p100d SO bad. Gonna be trading in my 2019 camry xse for one soon enough. I LOVE the ride of the model S with air suspsension...absolutely floats like a damn cadillac
I was very disappointed that the 3 didn't come with a liftgate. The truck was a huge disappointment. Many felt like this as can be seen by the initial reveal and how everyone complained how small the trunk opening was so incredibly small that Tesla had to redesign the whole back end of the car to get the opening somehow bigger. That said I went with a fully specked out 3, including Full Self Driving which was (only) $6,000US at the time. I considered a used 3 in similar price territory but none existed w/ HW3 2 years ago.
Thanks for the great video Richard. Looking at a model S at the moment but nervous as it's a 2016 so it's losing its drive train and battery warranty next march.... Only has 55k miles though. Anybody any tips or guidance on this, is there a battery and drive chain health check or diagnostics I could get done?
There is a self diagnosis you can run through the app (but apparently doesn't work for everyone) and on the Model3/Y there is also a service menu where you can run a physical charge and discharge test (doesn't help with the Model S). There's also Tessie which is a paid subscription app that details your batteries health and overall range. There are also a number of providers offering pre purchase EV battery evaluations. Some require an OBD dongle which is a problem on a Tesla. The other method is a simple range test. Charge the vehicle to full and see what range it says you have. Drive it around for say 10% of the battery - some mixed driving, motorway and city. Multiply the number of miles by 10 and see how much range you would have got from full to empty then check it against comparable vehicles.
Run away very quickly. Go to any Tesla dealership and look at the car parks full of broken s and x. Mileage does not matter, mine did front drive motor in 36k
One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned in the comments is that the Model S doesn't always have CCS charging so you either need to have the car upgraded, or use an adapter to use V3 Superchargers, or third party chargers such as Ionity.
Are you kidding me? Tesla's supercharger network is leagues ahead of any of the ccs networks and is vastly more reliable than any other charging network. (Of course, I am speaking of the US charging network. Are things different in the UK and Europe?)
@@patriciazoerner Yes. In Europe the Model 3 and Y only have CCS. V2 Superchargers have two leads, the original Tesla lead AND CCS. However V3 Superchargers only have CCS leads. Hence, my comment that to rapid charge an original Model S or X anywhere other than a V2 SC, you either need to use an adapter or pay for the CCS update. It's not a big deal, it just hadn't already been mentioned.
Like the S but enjoying my m3p that i purchased through your company its smaller and tighter, I've tryed a Y performance and though nice the 3 is nicer sport wise.
I totally agree with you about the negative points of Model 3. Lack of hatchback functionality and poor seats. Actually these are some of the most important necessities. Regarding minimalist design, I am very happy with one single touchscreen 😀 Anyway, I have 2022 M3 LFP. Can drive about 440 km. I manage the trunk. But next car must definitely be an electric SUV. Even I like sedans
My S long range (2020) has non-transferable lifetime supercharging - I only found out this after I’d ordered and cancelled a midnight silver one (don’t ask…) and re-ordered in pearl white six months later: there must have been a promotion unknown to me! I do value the active air suspension which gives a very comfy ride without the American Waddle.
That's easy. I'd take the Model S for the practically aspect alone. Hatchback for the win!! And I like the screen in front of the driver. Plus, the Model S is gorgeous. It's the phone argument about buying last year's flagship vs the latest mid-range premium phone. Flagship is going to be nicer, even if it is older.
Re the seats, I found on my test drives that the Tesla seat bases are much too narrow and were giving me incredible discomfort after only a few minutes. I'm not wide, 6'5 but only 85kgs, but the seats were unbearable. Went with the i4 in the end which I'm actually pleased I did, it's a much nicer car in pretty much every way imo.
I have a Model,3 LR and love it, but the proportions of the S are in my opinion more pleasing. The S also has the liftback and more comfortable suspension. Those two features let the M3 down.
I did have a question i was hoping to ask… What's best to buy.. A 2020 S performance or new Y performance. Both being similar in price. This gives me a better idea. Thanks RSEV ✌🏻
I have a question about 100d and 90d a charging test . Is any different between ? Both 17,18 plate and also any option to found do they come with free supercharge the same year? Can check in any website or anywhere?
Just got a 17 MS100d (traded a 3L VW TDI) . Used price was 30k, for the money it’s much better value than a more expensive model 3 (used). I test drove a Y ( no appetite for a 54k new car)….test drove a model 3, nice but not worth it for a new nor used one (used are more expensive than new 😅). For a 3.9 sec first time EV that’s cheaper than a new Camry but was north of $94k new…it was a no brainer….I drive 2k miles a month. MCU is fast enough, next year I may plop $2250 on MCU2….but as is I charge at home and although I wish I found the performance version I am very satisfied with everything.
I have owned both and except from the price of the 2 2nd hand EVs you are comparing it is absolutely not the same category of cars... If you don't need the extra space and don't mind about the minimalism TM3 is absolutely brilliant. TMS is a pure beauty and the prices of 2nd hand is so low now... I would prefer 19", MCU2 and ccs adapter TMS. My personal choice would be TMS for big trips and family and TM3 for commuting 😅
The fast charging of our 2019 MS vs a 2021 M3 LR is very different. I charged 400 km in less time than it took me to order a burger, finish my food and go back to the parking lot. I can not remember experiencing such high speeds with the MS.
@@garyanderton TM3 supercharging is about 30% faster 30min vs 42min for 10%->80%. I haven't noticed such a big inconvenience for that after all supercharging is not my everyday usage. But if you are planning to supercharge a lot that is definitely a good point
I would go for the S every time. As you say the extra information from the two displays. Easier to use controls. The 3 has just too many functions operated from the centre screen. The comfort levels on a long journey are amongst the best of any car. And why the 3 was not produced as a hatch is a mystery! I like the external dimensions and efficiency of the 3, but it needs better seats, a better ride, a second screen or heads up display. If they did a model 3 estate (I don't like SUVs) with these tweaks, I'd seriously be looking at changing. But for now the 85D is staying or rather its coming down to Italy with me.
Great video thanks. Personally, I find myself drawn to the Model S and X. There's an undeniable allure about their looks and the presence they command on the road, even though I've yet to drive the Model 3. Recently, I've embarked on the task of finding a new car to replace my old ML63. During this search, I've had the opportunity to test drive both the Model X and Y. Of the two, the Model X provided a ride that was far superior. The Model Y, on the other hand, offered a ride that felt comparable to strapping a skateboard to my teeth. Given that I own bikes and dogs, a hatchback is a necessity for me. Thus, the ride and boot access are critical factors. Unfortunately, if these don't meet my requirements, it becomes a deal breaker
Why suggest to put Mountainbikes in the back/boot of your car? Just get a Thule bike rack for the back. You'd get a ton of mess and scratches inside the car, pushing a whole MTB inside. Tesla is one of the few EVs that actually come with Trailer hitches. Great video and comparisons though. Good information overall!
Larger wheels increase the area in contact with the road. This increases the rolling resistance. In turn this increases the amount of power required to move the car. This reduces efficiency. Likewise larger tires are usually performance based for extra grip over the (smaller) standard wheel / tires designed for efficiency at the cost of grip. Larger tires are also often more expensive as a byproduct. Larger tires and sports ties as well can reduce efficiency (even on gas cras) quite significantly. Combine the two and it's a double hit.
The Model S is a marvel in car design - still looks good 10 years in while having some of the lowest drag of any car on the market. Other brands struggle to get near this low of a drag with everything from average to hideous design! Only issue with the Model S imo is that the visibility is questionable, especially through the back window. But you can have the backup camera on at all times.
I just received a message from Tesla cancelling my order for a Model S - no longer going to be making right hand drive. They offered a left hand drive or €2,000 credit against a Y or 3 (I have a 3).
Model S is best! I love my 75D bought from R Symons. I strongly recommend buying from Richard and his team. Keep up the great videos Richard.
I would say the model s the proper Tesla
Cracking video! Always preferred the S over the X and 3. The nonstop from Edinburgh to London you did crowed the S for me. Damn shame Tesla haven’t supplied them for a few years now in the UK.
Another great video, thanks Richard. I have a 2018 MS, my mate has a 2021 M3 LR . I have driven them both and been driven in both as passenger. You just hit all the key points so beautifully for both cars. My MS is on 19s and I indeed get about 10% more range than the MS in the video.

Your last paragraph was gold, I'll put it in my quiver, if you don't mind
😂😂😂😂 Worth it for the punch line 😂😂😂😂
Great video as always and nice comparison.
We have a Model S here in Australia. It's an older 2015 85D with free supercharging/connectivity, MCU2 upgrade and CCS charging. Brilliant car, fantastic for Mountain bike riding and camping it's unbelievable how much storage space it has. It's only downside is it's external size, but we live in a fairly rural area and are picky where we park. We sometimes have to park a bit further away to avoid door dings, but have always done that with any car we've owned anyway.
S All the way! Thanks Richard, awesome video comparison. I would buy another S tomorrow. Hands down the best car I have ever owned.
I have a model 3 and have driven both the S and Y. You're right the S is luxury all the way but I love the zippiness of the 3. Hard choice
Wow I like your dedication and enthusiasm in every video!
Nice! Where did you get your rubber mats from?
@@TraderJono I got a set from ebay that has a lip around them to hold liquid and then used sheeting from a project that I had finshed to make a roll out cover for the back of the seats when folded down, that drains down into the rubber areas, so can then simply lift out drain away and wipe.
@@amyroberts8340 thanks Amy. I'll take a look
I’d have S 100D!
They are a lot more then 35k like he said
Which one would I prefer ?
Peek power and the car's charging curve
Thanks for a good video.
Regards
Mikkel
Great content and thank you. I have been following you since 2020 when I leased my Model 3 Performance, a company car which I had for three years.
It’s now my own money and I am so torn between these exact two cars Richard, I really don’t need the brutality of the performance. At 58 though the Model S is really now reaching out to me. I now need to spend some time in one.
Thank you again.
I think you got that review spot on. The answer is simple though, you need them both.
Model s looks much better imo
A world of difference!
I agree
I actually prefer model 3. It's got sporty looks
Great video for us who are planing to buy our first Tesla. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Let us know if any of the cars we have in stock are of consideration www.rsev.co.uk
Seeing your video compare makes me want Hyundai Ioniq even if I drive an old Leaf now :)
I'll have both Richard. 😊
Wish second hand 100Ds were as cheap down under. Just too few of them sold I guess....
S all day long! I am bias though as I own a MS P90DL. I do like the M3 though I've had the pleasure of driving one for a week 😊
Thank you
Or Richard
Who’s Simon?
I’m Richard. But anyway yes well we could but too late to edit it now. Generally both fine. Model S with actual leather gets a bit more patina of course. But it’s less sweaty than the newer faux leather
I apologize Richard, I had to make changes to the name. Please forgive any confusion caused by Siri's mistakes 😂🤣😂
Our 2018 model s with 84k miles, vegan leather comes up like new! Leather seats age, like all other cars but the vegan interior seems to not deteriorate 😎
I have 1hr test drive in a 2023 M3 Performance tomorrow I want to see how it compares to my fully equipped 2015 P90DL 😃👍 love a good comparison
Chime back in here and let us know!
@@raheeb1 I have completed my comparison!
There are positives for both. I will not be switching at this point I still believe I have the right car. I have listed the positives of each by comparison.
M3P
1. Better handling on country roads, the steering is more "direct" at higher speeds. It's a small difference but enough to notice
5. For those who like storage the M3 comes with the traditional door bins and the pockets on the back of the front seats
6. The M3P feels like a sports car when driving at high speeds, going round sharp bends and accelerating hard out of them.
7. What I like about the M3P is one moment I can be driving super efficiently because the M3 efficiency is sooo good especially over my MS. And then the next moment driving like a rally driver on country roads 🤣 the contrast is awesome
8. I still keep my hand gently on the wheel I promise 😜
Model S P90DL positives in comparison
5. The tech in any MS that came with the premium packages like subzero, lighting etc are now only just recently matched by the M3P 2022 onwards because previously it didn't have the heated steering wheel which now experiencing having one in my MS I don't know how I lived life without it before Tesla 🤣
6. My high fidelity sound system is better than the premium one in the M3P
7. This one's opinion however the MS looks better from the front and the back 😬
@@TraderJono Had your Model S got CCS or do you need an adapter to use V3 Superchargers and third party chargers such as Ionity?
@@peterwilliamson1825 All Model S' before 2021 have the type 2 style charger as standard. I have the CCS adapter for the V3 chargers. The one I go to most often is a V2. But I'm glad I have CCS otherwise that'd be an annoying surprise arriving at a charger in need of juice 😆
Good point though I barely use superchargers and I'm so used to using the adapter that I forgot that it is more fluid on newer models or any 3 and Y at CCS chargers.
Great point made regarding the bottom seat, anyone over 6ft will find this can cause back ache.
Great video Rich. Model S was/is my choice out of the two. The S has the looks, the hatch, the closer normal car feel (not just a single screen), portrait mode (I prefer for all but watching video), more space …and did I mention looks? 😜
However, the 3 is not a huge compromise.
Panel gaps on s, poor windscreen wipers on s. I still prefer the s though. I sold my s with free supercharging for model 3 perf. Regretted ever since
should I sell my 2020 model 3 perf for an S p100d 10k difference? Like the 3 but starting to get boring..
What kind of model s was it ?
Yes. I love my Model S Performance @MadCuzUBroke
Model S is the king! Will be picking one up by the end of the year
Prefer the model S over model 3 any day, it just looks so much better.
Please comment on how long your range is on the 75d real world as I was surprised that the 100d only got 300 miles when it is supposed to get 400
@@richardburke952 I Will pick the car up today, I will get back you, I was told by an employee at Tesla real world range will be maximum 250,
@@richardburke952 my P90DL gets 225 😅 300 is good!
@@Abdurrob2 super excited 😆 love to see video of your car ... Dream car 🚗 thrilled for you 😁
Definitely the Model S for same reasons as you highlighted 😊
agree with you Richard the S is much sharper looking that the 3 or Y in fact the looks are one main reason I didnt buy Tesla but went for the Quattro Q4 which I really like!
You should mention how the 2023 models (including ones built as of October 2022) model 3s (and Y’s) got c on comfort dampers.
Thanks for doing this comparison. I'm mulling this very question....used Model S or new Model 3 or Y.
The Model 3 LR would fit the bill for me, but...not happy that it doesn't have a drivers display in front of me like the 'S'
Which brings me to a suggestion of a video for you?
How does charging time compare at superchargers? Assuming the 100d has CCS upgrade/adapter.
But the plaid seems to fix that too.
looking at the spy shots of the updated model 3, it looks like a smaller model S, makes me wonder if they will do something similar with the interior.
I want a model s p100d SO bad. Gonna be trading in my 2019 camry xse for one soon enough. I LOVE the ride of the model S with air suspsension...absolutely floats like a damn cadillac
EXcellent! And what would the trip cost in a similar ICE executive express..... 150 miles in a 450HP AWD? I am guessing about £50 in fuel...
Naw man. CyberTruck is AWESOME!! I'm very glad it's not a regular old truck. If you want that, get an F-150 Lightning.
But would you still take an older (pre-2021 facelift) Model S over the Model 3 Highland refresh? :)
Has S got a proprietary rainsensor? Guess Vision is just as bad on S as 3/Y?
Model S every time. Thank you.
I parked in that spot a couple of weeks ago 👍
I totally agree with you about the negative points of Model 3. Lack of hatchback functionality and poor seats. Actually these are some of the most important necessities. Regarding minimalist design, I am very happy with one single touchscreen 😀
Anyway, I have 2022 M3 LFP. Can drive about 440 km. I manage the trunk. But next car must definitely be an electric SUV. Even I like sedans
Model S is definitely a Swan in looks compared to a frog Model 3. Very informative video.
What are the charging speed differences? Will the 100d charge with a similar rate 10-80 as the M3?
Great review guys
Love out 17 MS 75D
I have a Model,3 LR and love it, but the proportions of the S are in my opinion more pleasing. The S also has the liftback and more comfortable suspension. Those two features let the M3 down.
I have the s75d and looking at the s100. Is it worth spending the extra money or just keep the s75? My 75 is 2017 and the s100 is 2018
Very informative Richard
I did have a question i was hoping to ask… What's best to buy.. A 2020 S performance or new Y performance.
Both being similar in price. This gives me a better idea. Thanks RSEV ✌🏻
I have a question about 100d and 90d a charging test . Is any different between ? Both 17,18 plate and also any option to found do they come with free supercharge the same year? Can check in any website or anywhere?
Always thought S looks great but recently picked up a 3LR in eclipse black and it looks stunning. It's the white that doesn't suit IMHO.
Not even a contest - model S every time. So much more class and style 😊
The latest model 3's do have uv and heat resistant glass on the roof and front glass.
@@garyanderton TM3 supercharging is about 30% faster 30min vs 42min for 10%->80%.
But for now the 85D is staying or rather its coming down to Italy with me.
well said.
I’d herd the model 3 have softer suspension now ? Any truth to it
Yet to try one. None so far have had it I don’t think but latest batch may well have
ID7 GTX any day over either. Not that I can afford any.
Good comparison of cars for similar money!
Had an s plaid but prefer my y long range .. never been in the shop with the y and multiple time with the s ..
Did that journey today in my Zoe, absolute breeze. Do let me know if you need driver down west ☺️
Hi great video I would deffo have the model s can you tell me why if you have bigger wheels does the efficiency come down
Larger wheels increase the area in contact with the road.
Richard does cover that in the video. He reckons about 10% efficiency loss with the 21s vs the 19s.
Great video!👍
And the S with double panel glass all around is very quiet, little road noise.
Love the Model S
I just received a message from Tesla cancelling my order for a Model S - no longer going to be making right hand drive. They offered a left hand drive or €2,000 credit against a Y or 3 (I have a 3).
Good job, I have the Y but I’m going to get a model S soon as I can get in buried. I payed 85k us and now you can get it for way less. Ouch
Does the Model S have a heat pump?
The one in the video no, but the new model with plaid platform does have heat pump.
@@rodrigosousa9049 thanks
Can’t tell you love the Model S much!
Model S is definitely prettier. ❤ Also such a smooth ride.
Love the S, but the 3 is already bigger than I really want.
