I wanna meet a japanese guy who's a massive fan of half life 2 but only as an arcade game and has no idea about the original PC version. That person's gotta exist right?
Somewhere, there's a Japanese man utterly confused that the fun arcade shooter he used to play consistently shows up on Western "best game of all time" lists.
With how much the PC gaming (especially Steam) is quickly growing in Japan, they're most likely have played Half-Life 2 on Steam (it has Japanese text support) if they were interested in HL2 arcade.
I actually played the Left 4 Dead arcade game! I remember being so surprised and confused by its existence (and the nunchuck) that I had to play it. The “memory card” you mentioned isn’t actually a memory card, but rather a sort of NFC ID card that lets you sync your play session with your profile stored on a game server, letting you retain unlocks and scores etc. They work on a wide variety of machines usually by the same publisher. I have one specifically to play rhythm games whenever I go to Japan!
I was hoping something like that existed somewhere. That sorta thing would work excellently with this one Crazy Taxi spinoff idea I came up with when I was 17.
"Just imagine playing as this cute schoolgirl and hearing Coach's dialogue" Bro that's been my Left 4 Dead experience for years. I'm pretty sure those are the only mods that exist.
It's kinda' weird to see Western games being Japanized for once instead of the other way around. They even have anime music and Japanese flight attendant announcers!
The economic pressure on Japanese arcades has been steadily increasing over the past handful of years. Basically, they try to ensure a "one coin, one game" experience but inflation and taxes are making it impossible to maintain that. So whether Japanese arcade goers will be deterred by having to use more coins will be the real determining factor, especially when you consider that social norms over there already encouraged masks and distancing when illnesses are going around.
The BEMANI series of rhythm games is still going strong over there. Games like DDR, IIDX and Sound Voltex are still very popular and do a good job of steadily adding in new content.
For some reason this made me picture someone like Miyamoto's head popping up from a huge pile of old Famicom games like "Uncle Derek, may I please go home now?" "No. You ARE home."
@@mariic2 It's been a while, but didn't Derik go over it in the very video these comments are under? It's not like, Valve-produced but it was produced under license.

So happy to see SSFF covering Japanese arcade games, such an under-exposed niche of gaming. Also the memory card used for L4D survivors is a nesica card, used as a way to login to nesica, and compatible with all of taito's modern arcade games
When I was stationed in Guam, the hotel the USO was in had had the half life arcade machine, but it was always broken. Kinda sad I never got to play it.
A lot of old arcade games from the 2000’s and (just a few since the arcades were really dying) in the 2010’s actually ran on low budget PCs, slightly modified to work with their custom controls. For example, the Sega Ringwide and Ringedge series, and the Half Life 2 game features in this video. This means many of them can be ported to PC without too much trouble, and others can be emulated with programs like TeknoParrot, which mainly just helps them work on more modern OSs and support more accessible controllers.
CS visual novel...wow, again, that caught me off guard - again! It's always like this with this channel and I love it. Also uncle, if it's not much can we get the SSFF longer format stuff? You know, with the intro and everything? Those are the best. If I haven't already may I suggest Baroque? It's your thing since it's horror (?) and suuuper weird.
1:20 this is a good time to mention that for some bizarre reason there’s an Injustice arcade game that’s a port of the Mobile game and not the console version for some stupid reason.
Yeah, I remember running into it and thinking "Oh cool, I like Injustice!", then being thoroughly disappointed with how lackluster it was. The card system was cool though, but then again I have an unreasonable love of collectable cards.
The fact that you talk about pedals being used for jumping and crouching in a first-person shooter as "it kinda makes sense" is why I love this channel. "You come to Uncle Derek to get dumb!" Yep.
The 8-bit classic game "Bouder Dash" was ported to the arcade, back in 1984. That's the first game *I* ever saw ported from a home system to the arcade!
*Lode Runner* received a coin-up conversion, as well, with remixed levels and a couple of extra features (ie a bonus enemy hidden in one of the blocks) and it received a couple of sequels later on. So did *Tetris* and *Sokoban* , come to think of it. Considering all of the (fan-made) variants available (ie The Legend Returns/Online, XBox Live Arcade; *Bloxeed* and the *Plus* series for *Tetris* ) for these classics, I wouldn't mind if features from those past titles made it into a future (mod friendly?) 'Definitive' or 'Anniversary' Edition. Imagine a friendly rivalry between Rockford and Repton in multiplayer (to say nothing of the 'stories' they could tell each other). ^_^ **sigh** If only... 9_9
The card you mentioned is actually just a ID card that downloads your progress from a network! All of the major arcade vendors are doing it this way now, and as of not long ago all new games are cross compatible with eachother's cards.
Very weird to see a ssff video on something I helped preserve. I used to help with the technical development and release of these ttx games to preserve them online, mostly with fixing a lot of file permission bugs with half life 2 survivor. So awesome seeing Derek talk about them!
This needs a part 2 that branches out to other weird ports TO arcade. Off the top of my head; Farcry Paradise Lost Silent Hill the Arcade Counter strike Neo Halo: Fireteam Raven Minecraft Dungeons Arcade Tomb raider 2018 (really) Luigi’s mansion Dark Moon Quake Flappy bird (I swear there is a 3 to 4 metre high “Arcade Machine” with this in Australia) Fruit ninja Infinity blade And probably more?
Hey! Left 4 dead 2 survivor! I’ve actually played that on the actual hardware! There’s an arcade in Brookfield Illinois called galloping ghost that has it. It’s super cool. I played the first level of the campaign. Fortunately I have a nessica card allowing me to save my progress, too! I use it for groove coaster and the theaterhythm final fantasy arcade game at my local round one! It’s nothing more than a neat little oddity, but cool nonetheless!
One bit of trivia about HL2 Survivor I was disappointed that you didn't mention: Buried in the game data is the first official HL2 Gordon Freeman model to ever make it into the public's hands. It's been optimized for gameplay/the hardware and is therefore not the exact same high-quality one seen in promotional renders, but it is still *the* HL2 Gordon model. It was probably meant for the tutorial images and cutscenes.
You know? I could swear that once upon a time as a teenager, I played an Unreal Tournament arcade cabinet. Two sit down cabs connected to each other. You could use a headset to talk to your opponent.
Don't mind me just binging all the videos on SSFF having a major nostalgia trip and also seeing all the things I was curious about growing up that I never actually got to experience. This channel is a gold mine of memories and the videos are really well done. Thanks man!
I had the opportunity to play the L4D machine in Taito’s “Orange” arcade in Akihabara. I have never had soo much fun before in the arcade, playing with strangers and working as a team. Was a experience I’ll never forget
Those "Memory Cards" you mentioned (9:24) are just regular Nesica cards that you can still buy today. They're just RFID cards that have account information and syncs them to their online databases. Now newer Nesica games are compatible with all of the AmusementIC cards (Aime, Banapass, & eAmusement), but older machines still require Nesica-specific cards, unless they are retrofitted.
"And just to remind you: This is an officially sanctioned Valve project." Yes, well, _Hunt Down the Freeman_ also exists. And I presume _White Memories_ is at least functional.
When I was growing up my mom didn't have a lot of money, and we didn't have internet. I put so much time into Counter Strike on Xbox, fighting bots. Was a lot of fun. The bots were pretty good.
Back in 2003, I played the arcade port of "Resident Evil: Code Veronica". It was pretty much like these games where you walk around shooting monsters from Code Veronica in levels taken from the Dreamcast version. And It was from Japan because it was the Biohazard title.
fun fact, those Taito memory cards (with Nesica on them) are still being used! most notably rn you can use it to save scores and unlock songs in Groove Coaster

The Left 4 Dead Survivors arcade game is actually pretty good, although to make it work properly you need an offline patch as the Nesica service is down, without the offline patch you can only play the first two levels and the tutorial on easy. In addition to the new survivors and voice acting it has: Character customization with hats, outfits and more. New variants of special infected, such as a boomer that spawns mini-boomers once killed, or a smoker that drags you in really quickly. It's pretty cool ngl.
You got the game.com!!!! Was worried it never made it, I found out I didn't send the comm port cover, will be sending that out tomorrow. Expect a tiny almost completely empty box from me eventually
I have been to an arcade in Chicago called Galloping Ghost that had Half Life and Left 4 Dead cabs. I did play a bit of the Half Life one but I couldn't stop playing this game called Liquid Kids enough to play Left 4 Dead. Both games always had people waiting to play them though. That arcade is heaven on Earth. It's off topic but their Crazy Taxi cab had a broken brake which almost made the game more fun.
Wasn't till I went to an arcade during vacation in London that I realised there was arcade versions of Halo, Tomb Raider and Walking Dead. Makes me wonder how many arcade games is out there that I don't know about!
Hi Derek! I just wanted to say I appreciate your infectious enthusiasm. It's tough to remain in a bad mood while watching you. Keep up the good stuff, brother. ;)
I played a SNES port on arcade, way, way back in the day. It had Super Mario World, F-Zero and Actraiser. The first two were timed, I think. And the joystick and buttons were a huge SNES controller. But I'm guessing it was more of a promotional thing than a direct port.
I already knew about the half life 2 aracde port but damn counter strike and left 4 dead arcade versions are nuts. I love your channel and feel like I learn something new every time Wich I can't say for most edu-gamkng channels. Keep up the great work!
13:27 I can relate to Sho because I too am not so cheerful, but not so gloomy. Usually, I talk with people as a normal person. However, I do not communicate with people deeply. In other word, I need this game. That English definitely leaves the impression that Valve had little involvement in this Japanese Counterstrike visual novel for Flash. That is definitely a sentence.

My girl Kazusa at 10:35 , someone from SSFF has really good taste!
if you look up marquee artwork for Counter Strike neo you'll see they went for a VERY HEAVY Ghost in the shell vibe for the game, something I very much approve XD
when i saw you tweeting about half life 2 arcade, i assume that it was only a arcade port based entirely on the boats segments, probably a racing version of the game with a jet ski like cabinet and etc I was not prepared for cs neo white memories, oh god
If I was ever stupidly rich, one of the few eccentric and agregeously frivelous things I would use my money for is hunting down an arcade cabinet of Half-Life 2: Survivor. I've always wanted one.
Every month, I am grateful to Producer Grace for sharing with the internet the pure, revitalizing, unfiltered HIMBO energy that just pours off Derek instead of hording it all to herself like a dragon or a selfish bastard like I would.
Pretty sweet! Never played any of these originally, lol, but I appreciate that this all exists! I recently played Halo ODST as an arcade rail shooter. Another game I'm not that familiar with, but Master Chief shows up in the middle of an assault, so that was cool!
I wanted to point out two things. First, the arcade is built entirely around "pick and up play" simplicity and constant action, so the changes made to the arcade version of Half-Life 2 were meant to accommodate that, not necessarily the Japanese market per se. Second, you do get the gravity gun, but much later in the game than you do in the PC version.
I played the L4D2 arcade port here when it first came out. Had my progress card and all that. Pretty awesome if you had a full group of people on the machines, but it barely ever happened...
On the topic of L4D Survivors models i think you can replace the survivor dialogue with the Japanese L4D Survivors dialogue and now I'm hoping for a translation of the Survivors subtitles and ported to the workshop!
I was watching this while making a cheeseburger, and I tucked my phone into my pocket while walking back to my room after it was done. Had some sort of spasm or something while opening the door, barely caught the plate and somehow only lost the top bun and a little cheese.

I played a SNES port on arcade, way, way back in the day. It had Super Mario World, F-Zero and Actraiser. The first two were timed, I think. And the joystick and buttons were a huge SNES controller. But I'm guessing it was more of a promotional thing than a direct port.
OH MY GOD. I remember seeing and playing Left 4 Dead 2: Survivors at Galloping Ghost. It was a surreal experience that I will never forget.
I already knew about the half life 2 aracde port but damn counter strike and left 4 dead arcade versions are nuts. I love your channel and feel like I learn something new every time Wich I can't say for most edu-gamkng channels.
Keep up the great work!
I'm just left in awe that an officially licensed Counter-Strike visual novel exists
I remember playing/reading through White Memories back in 2005. Still, never played Neo at the arcades since I had access to CS 1.6 and Source.
10:35 my girl Kazusa made an appearance!
Someone at SSFF has really good taste in anime
I said the same thing! Was not expecting to see White Album 2 pop up.
I watched Wreck It Ralph so much this past 12 months, that reference instantly made my eye brows drop.
Hell yeah! More Goodness from Uncle Derek!
So, there's a Turrican 30th Anniversary bundle happening...
if you look up marquee artwork for Counter Strike neo you'll see they went for a VERY HEAVY Ghost in the shell vibe for the game, something I very much approve XD
9:25 Oh that's a Nesica card! IC cards are sorta like a memory card, never thought of them that way lol.
when i saw you tweeting about half life 2 arcade, i assume that it was only a arcade port based entirely on the boats segments, probably a racing version of the game with a jet ski like cabinet and etc
I was not prepared for cs neo white memories, oh god
If I was ever stupidly rich, one of the few eccentric and agregeously frivelous things I would use my money for is hunting down an arcade cabinet of Half-Life 2: Survivor. I've always wanted one.
10:37 Ayyyyy Highschool of the Dead is my jam! Always nice to see that show get a shout
i think the massive brightly colored arrows are to speed players along, so that more people can play the same machine. pretty smart
Every month, I am grateful to Producer Grace for sharing with the internet the pure, revitalizing, unfiltered HIMBO energy that just pours off Derek instead of hording it all to herself like a dragon or a selfish bastard like I would.
16 QUAKE Arcade cabs hooked up together!?!? SSIIIIIIIIC!! Someone PLEEEAASSSEEEEEEE make that happen sometime!
A CounterStrike visual novel sounds just as surreal as Minecraft Steve in Smash. And somehow both are a reality
12:33
Got a good chuckle out of me
My son and I played a halo arcade game a few days ago. It was a light gun, rail shooter type game.
The rabids VR game is really cool.
I watched 10 seconds, Already love the video!
😭😭
God I love when y'all do Valve and id Software videos. I can see how y'all love Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Doom, and Quake. Love these videos!
Derek is back after a billion years!
