  • Mining is a core part of minecraft, its arguably its most important element. But since minecraft began in 2009, mining strategies have changed drastically and we have gone from simple holes in the ground, to tiny strip mines and than to gigantic tnt powered quarries. So how did this happen?

It always annoyed me that people call branch mining "strip mining" when TNT mining is much more like real strip mining. I started with a network of 2x2 tunnels until I learned about pinwheel mining and see no reason to abandon it when it comes to just getting diamonds -- though caving for iron worth it for the fun and gets plenty of iron and coal.

@@aquticdan678 "Surface mining, including strip mining, open-pit mining and mountaintop removal mining, is a broad category of mining in which soil and rock overlying the mineral deposit are removed, in contrast to underground mining, in which the overlying rock is left in place, and the mineral is removed through shafts or tunnels."
They're talking about how strip mining in the context of Minecraft is the complete opposite of what strip mining means in real life:
"Strip mining is the practice of mining a seam of mineral, by first removing a long strip of overlying soil and rock (the overburden); this activity is also referred to as overburden removal."
More realistic names for mining methods in Minecraft would be:
      1. Drift mining (Horizontal tunnels, what we typically refer to as strip mining)
      2. Slope mining (Staircasing)
      3. Shaft mining/sinking (Vertical shaft, as was common in Alpha)
      4. Stope or "room and pillar" mining (Excavating a large area with a beacon)
      5. Finally, strip mining (Removing the surface layers of dirt and stone to expose ores further underground, aka quarrying)
You can read about real-life mining techniques and draw your own equivalents here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining#Underground_mining

This video took me way back, lol. I started playing in the last days of Alpha after some college buddies introduced me to Minecraft. It may have been due to us not having any exposure to what few LPs were around back then, but our early mines typically were 1x1 vertical shafts with a ladder, that would then branch off at more or less random Y-levels in search of ore.

Caves should definitely be a much faster way to get ores, since it's more interesting and less grindy than strip mining. To compensate, caves should be harder, with more mobs and harder mobs (as we have seen will be added), plus the drip stones if they pose any threat.
But I also think there should be something faster that can actually catch up to you easily but doesn't deal a lot of damage.
Imo Bats are a perfect mob to improve, give them double the speed and attack players, even if only dealing very little damage.
But to keep it interesting and balanced, make armour less useful against them. (so with full dia they still deal half a damage maybe, while only 2-3 hearts with no armour)

watching these videos makes me almost cry,
i have been plating this game for almost as long as the game has been around.
watching how it's progressed with the minecraft music in the background is one of the most nostalgic and melancholic feelings i have ever experienced with a video game, it's up there with listening to the donkey kong country soundtrack or playing mario kart wii alone,
i feel nostalgic because i remember playing with friends when i was young in the early 2010s, as i was poor my family could not afford the newer video games,
in fact for most of my childhood we only had my mothers nintendo 64 system from when she was in high school,
it was not until we got money from remodeling a house (my father had been fired from his regular job and my parents were good at fixing and building stuff) that my brother was able to buy a run down xbox360 and a copy of minecraft that we got a "new" system,
and in mid 2012 the game was almost primitive compared to now, still it was like a kids first trip to disney land, full of wonder and splendor
but playing locally with my friends is likely my most fond memory from that time spending hours having fun and building,
and seeing how minecraft has grown over the years, with the old youtube channels going away and the new ones coming and going, it's been almost like watching a child mature and grow into a successful adult, i never want to see minecraft go away, and it really could stay forever, minecraft is an ever evolving game, it could realistically stay for 30 years with kids growing up surrounded by the game.
minecraft is one of many games i value above all others,
i have an actual list of games that shaped my taste and view of things,
sure many of these were old or not even good but they shaped my childhood
    mario kart wii
    halo combat evolved
    minecraft
    star wars episode 1 racer
    donkey kong country
the leagend of zelda ocarina of time
the legend of zelda the skyward sword
the legend of zelda majora's mask
    skyrim
    left 4 dead
    killer instinct gold
    cruisin usa
    there are more,
but i will always be grateful for my mother owning these old systems
for my friends letting me play their wii when i had no wii of my own
my family for letting me help remodel houses so i could buy my own games, i hope you can realize how much i value minecraft above all other games i listed, because i watched it grow as i grew, i watched it evolve, i remember being excited for the first minecraft merch being added to stores, i remember sticking by minecraft even when other games seemed to overshadow the game,
gta5 fortnite among us overwatch league of legends, whatever games came and went minecraft is still here with us

I forget what it’s called, but you could make quarries and so long as they were powered it’d automine that quarry and send the materials back through a pipe to storage

11:30 I don't think the change to TNT is what made carpet bombing more prevalent so much as the community becoming more familiar with slimestone and flying machines thanks to the attention brought to them by big youtube channels.
More importantly, TNT still destroys dropped items, so carpet bombing can only used to expose diamond ore, at which point the machines must be stopped so a player can mine them by hand.
