- Minecraft multiplayer was very different back in 2010. But thats fine, as the game got more popular, multiplayer evolved, nothing wrong with that. The problem is when these servers got greedy, monetising the server, making everything pay2win, corrupting the original style of minecraft in the process... So what went wrong with minecraft multiplayer?

Hey salc1, could you maybe talk to duper trooper about the hypixel skyblock duping situation? He thinks skyblock is p2w cuz u can buy cosmetics and booster cookies for gems which u get from the hypixel store, but these cosmetics barely give money and zero in game advantages. And booster cookies can be acquired by the normal person through the bazaar for a decent price. He really ruins the experience for everyone and makes the game near unplayable

hypixel... the three most popular games. bedwars, too skill based. skywars, same thing. skyblock, too grindy. the fact that there are better games that arent that popular, take zombies for example. zombies recreates the good feelings someone born in 2000 had experienced in codz, but in minecraft.

The personal, human element is what I miss about the old age of SMP servers. When servers were small scale survival experiences of towns where everyone knew each other, there was a heavy and loyal sense of community. A rogue griefer might join every once in a blue moon, but the people of the server would come together to help the victim rebuild and get back on their feet quickly. People would craft cakes to celebrate your birthday, and you would do the same for them. You could borrow tools/items from people, and they could trust that you would return them and/or repay the favor later. Players banded together in a large team to overcome a challenge that was insurmountable for just a couple of people. Players would play harmless pranks on each other. People would run to where you died to make sure your stuff was safely stored in a chest and help fight off any remaining mobs. Players would build a Christmas tree, and have gifts for everyone in chests. People were generally nice and would answer questions you had about the game. You didn’t even know each other beyond playing the same game, and yet you cared about each other.
You think you’d see any of that on Hypixel, or competitive PVP/factions servers? Not a goddamn chance. No one ever sympathizes when I say that Minecraft servers were never meant to be businesses. To this day, the best way to play Minecraft is a private server with a small group of friends.
Maybe it's just me,but if the more popular hypixel youtubers and all just suddenly disappeared the game would be a lot better,same goes for p2w youtubers
Hypixel isn't bad to say the least,but it's clear the server is made to make lots of money and attract attention,just like the p2w ones, but works because of youtubers
i'm still amazed that the server i frequent the most, a creative graylisted freebuild server, has survived since 2012, back during the golden age of smps, and is still going strong as ever with an active and tight-knit community

The goal of SMP then is growing together. SMP now is just You pay, You is the strongest in the server.

Wow this is absolutely amazing! Im so glad that you did this. Me and my friends used to watch our childhood youtubers play these games but never did we manage to play them as we didn't have the money to buy the game, we got into the game too late, when P2W servers became thr norm and everything was kit based. Now we will finally have a chance to get the experience we always wished for for the last 7 years. You are truly a great person!
I think the reason smps like hermitcraft are so popular is bc that server is what everyone really wants in their hearts, back to the old days

I just started getting into multiplayer with my friend and I never knew that the joy of playing together peacefully died out
Me and a friend would play on our own together. But that's just us two, not a public server. I'm sure there's still loads of private ones between friends.

Hypixel does deserve their #1 spot after years of work, HOWEVER, nowadays they are only updating their most popular games (skyblock and sometimes bedwars). It would be nice if there was better competition to pressure hypixel, after all, when there is decent competition, the consumer always wins

When I was younger I used to watch all my friends and TH-camers play smp but by the time I got my own account in the end of 2014 the landscape had changed. I always wanted to play on one of those tight nit community servers. Hope it goes well man

I don't remember the exact name of the first server I joined, but it was called something along the lines of SailboatMC or LifeBoat or something on Pocket Edition back in 2013. My mom was so scared of online multiplayer that she never let me play online games. But then I went over to a friends house and played on his phone so my mom wouldn't know. Man the good old days. When moms still thought the internet could kill you instantly. And then my mom found out, joined the server to test it out herself cause I was still somehow alive, and she was like," Ok you can play this." And I've been playing online ever since lol

I miss it too. The closest i got to it nowadays is ironically 2b2t since it's vanilla with plugins made to make it run and it's the old feeling

I remember one of my favorite things back on xbox360 was to create my own maps and redstone for "The Walls" gamemode, then go into COD BO2 and gather people to join XD. COD was such a good way to meet people and almost everyone loved Minecraft too.

I love videos like this. Survival servers are now mostly friends playing together in private. I love that you created your server. I wish I could join but I'm busy. I can only wish you luck and success in running your servers. Hoping for some basic SMP in the future too

I forgot the server ip and name the past fez years and that's why I never played on it again. I'm going to join that server again and feel some nostalgia!
I joined my friend brother server and I cried remembering back now. I used to log on every day and they would say hi and be cool. Now the owner got greedy😔
ive never heard of that, the first server i personally played was hypixel, specifically the housing, but the first survival one i joined was play.ideactivatemc.net and that did eventually get some p2w aspects and now its gone

Some of my best childhood memories are from 2012-2017 in a small survival server called mythcraft. The server isn't around anymore, but it was the best community I've ever been in.
I just want somebody to make a minecraft beta survival server where we all pretend the version we’re playing on is the most recent version
I miss being excited for new and frequent updates. new mobs and blocks. I don't like the yearly updates

I am not a full OG,since I play only since 1.5 but man any time was more fun than now,each time the game updates it's becoming more boring,it feels like it's added just to be added with the only exception being ocean update which I do like a little admittedly
I played on a SMP server for years and yes, I loved going on and seeing my friends, building things with them, touring other players bases. I had a walled city full of castles and other large builds - a tourist destination near spawn and people would bring new players over for a tour. I do miss those days.

Really sucks how theres been a massive rise in p2w servers. I looked into some owned by the same guy who spams his server with bots. Turns out he's run multiple pump and dump schemes. This kinda stuff seriously needs to be regulated.

Im so sad that all the smps are gone. Even on server list sites, all the servers that claimed to be "SMPs" were "SMP-style kit and store-run semi-survival"
This is exactly why I got into servers and been running my own small smp server with no plugins for a good while now. We're currently in season 4 and going strong.

Organic is the best way to play minecraft multiplay.. In february of 2020, i started a minecraft server with some of my pals, along with some other people in my school who wanted to join. We had a discord server with just about 15 of us, and when quarantine came, while it was a lot of struggle for everyone around the world, a lot of fun was being made with all of my friends, all just enjoying some minecraft together. We fought against eachother, made insane builds, played together, and just had fun. There was some griefing, some drama, there were people fighting other people, but we were just having fun. Some of the best memories I ever had with my friends. When we made a new world with mods and all these crazy anticheats and economy and all that stuff, then it stopped being fun, but we all remember and will never forget the fun we had during those few months of quarantine. There could never have been a better time that we could have done the server, and I will forever miss it, since i dont think we could ever duplicate that experience.
minecraftonline is one of those good old 2010 servers. it is still up and is currently updating to 1.12. It is a survival server

It is truly amazing hoe much better a video can be if you just use the Minecraft soundtrack over it, but most importantly, timed incredibly well with the speech

I've been an admin twice over for some of those servers that faded away... it never gets any easier seeing a group of friends who've built a community suddenly break apart for one reason or another. I still have a huge folder of screenshots from peoples' builds and things from back in the days of beta Minecraft.

back in the day, i used to play a server which had a game based on age of empires, it was fun as hell when many players joined at once, working together to upgrade both your equipment and village.

This reminded me of some of my first multiplayer experiences in Minecraft that I had forgotten. The one I remember the most, around 2012 or 2013 if I recall correctly, was a server that was a team deathmatch, capture the points type siege game in which there was red and blue. You'd join a lobby and there'd be a varying amount of players on each team, spawning on opposite sides of a floating steampunk-esc city in their teams' respective airships. The match was always on-going, restarting quickly when the objective was reached (I think it was either kills or time limit on the control points). The combat was simple, the map was probably relatively small compared to the amount of players there could be, and there was a respectable amount of jank due to allowing you to place wool of your team's color and/or break some blocks outside of the airships, but it was a blast from what I can remember. Not to mention 2021, but last time I remembered it and tried to search for it, I couldn't find a single thing on or about it in 2016. It's moments like these that have come about from Minecraft, and they're probably some of the best.

You made me long for a time I just BARELY missed. but also I believe the spirit you described was lost too. tried out the server... yeah it's a longshot from any close knit community.
I remember playing on 1 server called vicious circle. It came with the game (that i obviously cracked) it was a server filled with shops, buildings and some gamemodes. But in the wild were chests with names on them so you couldn't open them. It was amazing, me and my friend played on it for hours, our first base was underground...jesus alot was going on. I can talk for days
The server that made that spongebob sarcastic p2w pack actually shot themselves in the foot making it, which 12 year old who just learned about “sakasm” designed it

my server (mostly semi-vanilla survival) seemed to have the most players last year during quarantine and all that but now it's getting pretty quiet again with like 3 people on at a time max

I subbed just because of this video. I dearly miss the old days of SMP servers. building bases, raiding enemies, having fun and building together. Once I have an actually usable internet connection I will be there. Bookmarked.
