  • Today I installed what I believe to be one of the best suspension systems for the F30 BMW platform, Specifically for the X-Drive vehicles. There are many good setups on the market, and I believe this is one of the best for those with dominantly street use and occasional spirited driving. It is the perfect suspension for someone with the goal of having a mellow drop in ride height, while also wanting a very responsive and sporty suspension feel. Without wanting to deal with the stiffness of an aftermarket coilover system. It's extremely comfortable under casual driving, while also very responsive to the road. You can feel the road much more, yet in a comfortable way. But under spirited driving it tightens up, and plants the car to the road. The excessive stock body roll almost completely vanishes. Along with the understeer the car naturally has, It even encourages the car to have a slight oversteer. Making it feel like a true M sport car.

Your video is still relevant as most of us have recently bought a used F30 and looking into suspension mods. I always had great results with Koni & H&R springs on VW cars.

Just found your account and this video. Great tutorial thanks man. It looks like you're the same age as me, just wondering how you learned so much about working on cars?

Pass through sockets will allow top bolts on either mounts come off way easier and safer.. dangerous to use drill with maulgrips as could damage the shock interally

if the alignment is good after the installation, do you necessarily have to go get an alignment done?

What was the mileage on your car? And how long did you run the sport springs on the stock struts and shocks?

Looking forward to the following video!
Can you please talk about your alignment if you reacht the stock configuration in terms of camber and toe. Thank you!
Also how much do the springs lower your car?

Did you change the bump stops at all? Or the upper and lower mounts for the struts and shocks?
One of the best how to
    Videos great job

bilstein b8s the fronts have internal bump stops, but for the back you should use the m performance bump stops because the original ones will be destoryed by the lowering springs.
he didnt use any in the back witch is not great

I didn’t use bump stops because the bilstein s have internal stops. On the rear I didn’t use them but I have not had any issues where the suspension compresses enough to create a situation where the bump stops would be needed.

I did A lot of springs in my life on my cars and always read the H&R sports road the worst and I Bach were the best it just surprises me how many people use H&R springs I’m curious did you drop the car really low but as far as progressive right handling I haven’t heard the best

It dropped the car considerably but not too aggressively. It rides much worse when using factory struts. Especially on xdrive vehicles. I had h&r springs with bilstein struts on my e92 as well as my f30 and the handling characteristics improve drastically. It’s slightly stiffer than factory but in a way that you feel connected to the road much more than with the vehicle being stock. Without the stiffness associated with coilovers where you’d feel everything in your spine. I’ll be posting a follow up video soon showing how the car is a few months after using the bilstein and h&r combo.

Weird but H&R said to use Bilstein b6s with H&R lowering springs not b8s.

So what’s the verdict now after a month+? How do you like the Bilstein’s with the lowering springs? Assuming much better than stock, but how’s the ride? Any unstable rear-end, crashing, etc?

I’ll be posting a follow up video within the next few days!! The new suspension setup has had a few months worth of driving ranging from daily driving, agressive driving, road tripping, and other scenarios I’ll be diving into and giving my verdict on. So far it’s been great and made the f30 few like a completely different vehicle.

I don’t wanna be an asshole but you don’t need covering oem rubber in the spring around the shock absorber to protect the shock absorber for leaks?

not on bilsteins they are inverted tubes different than most other shock tubes which are external
