- Working at Evolve means you can’t keep a car standard! And now it’s time for our technician Hash to get some suspension upgrades for his F31 318D Touring.
Being on 144k we replaced the dampers with some Bilstein B4’s and then handled (excuse the pun) the ride height and handling with the MSS Ride Management System.

30d/35d are amazing diesel engines especially with a map
crazy strong engine for a diesel
those are really nice daily drivers and this refresh will keep it smooth and improve actual road safety being more responsive in a emergency if someone pulls out in front of you, did this with an old Volvo i drove some years back and it went from a DL to GT and when my buddy whose a Volvo mechanic went for the road test a woman pulled out in front of us without even looking and i had to maneuver around her because she stopped right in front of us blocking 2 lanes and if not for the upgrade like you are doing we both would have been in the hospital and both cars at the breakers and shopping for another vehicle, these are some of the best investments to make in a daily driver plus your keeping your family a little safer and more comfortable , the car lasted me another 100k miles and those upgrades were still really good, Bilstein for win

Hello Evolve. I’m looking for some advise, please. I currently own 2014 BMW F31 335d MSport Xdrive. I would like to lower my car slightly, don’t want to go over board, would like to keep some comfort. What would you recommend regarding springs, brand, part numbers etc, and as in this video you guys changed the shocks, my car has 80 thousand miles, should I change the shocks ?. I’m in Ireland, not easy to pop in etc.. Regards Stephen.
Hi Stephen, we would recommend a similar setup to this. At 80k it’s not necessary to change the shocks but would be advisable to freshen everything up and have it at its best.

Nice video, can I ask if the b4 would be a replacement for msport model 320d xdrive 2015. I think the number on my dampers is 6866555 with DH springs I think they are Quinten Hazel. Love my f31.

Nice so see some everyday car content too, this is the B47 2.0 right? Has it had an engine map or anything? Additionally how has it got the twin tail pipes has the back box been changed or is there a tailpipe mod which you can do on the facelift?

From memory it’s an early car so N47, with a facelift. Exhaust is custom.

Probably a Bilstein B12 kit but you wouldn’t have the height adjustability as it’s a fixed spring kit.

Ive been thinking about doing a suspension upgrade for my F10 550i msport. I would be giving up my electronic damper control, which I kinda like the ability to go from comfort to sport, and really notice the difference. Is it worth the sacrifice to change the ride on the fly?
If you like that ability you may be disappointed to lose it, but then you might find uprated dampers are just better that you don’t need it.
Do you guys prefer drop/adjustable springs instead of coilovers? If yes why?
For the price it is a great option especially for a pure road car or if you have factory EDC.
Does it have any wheel spacers on? It seems to, at the rear at least.

Unfortunately MSS do not have any products for the E series

Believe we ordered the M Sport spec ones on Bilstein's recommendation for our purposes.
Do you have a recommendation for sway bars with the MSS kits (xDrive)?
Haven’t experienced any ourselves but Eibach are usually a solid choice
My 30d E61's stock M suspension is very firm and the car has no body roll in corners even though is a 2ton wagon

Yes Hash already had spacers fitted. No discernible downsides.

I have a new F31 and need to swap the stock suspension as well. Lot's of info online but wondering your take on something - is it worth getting aftermarket adaptive dampers or just skip the adjustability and go with regular dampers? The price is just outrageous for some of those EDC systems just to get a bit softer at times...but I do like having the option. Curious what would you go with?

2L 4 cylinder diesel but lower power compared to 320D

It’s a shame that the stock TH-cam solution for ride improvement is springs, maybe dampers. ARBs, especially a stiffer rear in the Touring, make a massive difference to handling. It would be educational for many to cover this mod.
Uprated ARB are an often underrated modification. However to change them on this chassis requires dropping the subframe on the rear which isn’t a small amount of work.
I do understand. And maybe it”a not worth it on a lower powered model at least. But for those enjoying perhaps 250bhp+ might be amazed as to how much closer one can get to M like handling without the jump in cost to an actual M car and all it’s other associated costs.

If it’s a competition the standard suspension is great for fast road. Non comp either Bilstein B12 or B16 depending on desired height and performance.

@@Pr0vost that is more or less the average size these days... 5 series wagon is a big wagon, a6, mazda6, passat, skoda superb, etc....not the lower class than the cars i listed...anyway...nice job on the suspension
Why does MSS have such a strange rake? I wouldn't buy it.
It's adjustable to wherever you want, this is where Hash wanted initially (and has since tweaked it a few more times). That's the beauty of an adjustable spring kit!
