- Help us grow so we can bring you more videos! Like us on Facebook @ / 2redline For years, Volkswagen's GTI seemed to sit on an un-touchable perch atop most of its direct rivals. Although it lacked the raw power figures for bragging rights, no other competitor could touch the VW for its unbeatable combination of sporty performance and everyday livability. With strong entries from Ford, Honda, Subaru, and Mazda does the GTI still have what it takes to be considered a class leader? Let's find out...

I'm still driving my 2010 GTI. It still rocks! Best car I've ever owned. I like the 2-door better than the 4-door models.
It has more space actually than the 4 door i think, i own a 2 door 2009 TSI and the back passengers aren't even touching my seat with their knees when i drive all layed down.
@@patrickcrimi7184 you can have like 4 people in the back lol.
Im in the market for one right now. How many miles does yours have? do u have any tips or anything that i should be looking for?
@@felixg.cortez248 my 08 gti has 180000 and it has problems with the passenger airbag sensor and the front dipped light. Tbh I don’t recommend getting one. You’re gonna waste more on repairs than the car is worth. The car runs nice and all, but nor worth a dime tbh.
@@felixg.cortez248 My GTI only has 80k miles. Everyone says that once the TSI engine goes over 100k problems start happening. I don't know. I haven't had problems yet. The turbo-charged TSI engine simply wears out fast according to Scotty Kilmer. But, prior to 100k, its a fun car to drive. I drive my car hard because it's fun. If I buy another car, it will be a Toyota, Honda, or Mazda. If your heart is set on a GTI, do not get an automatic transmission (DSG.) Get a manual transmission.
Unless you are buying an Accord V6, we find the GTI to be much more fun to drive. The GTI also handles better and offers the hatchback utility. The accord will obviously be more reliable by reputation but it may not be as fun and it's a more common car. Go with the one that puts a bigger grin on your face ;)
I have the 4 door grey with DSG. It's dang near perfect.
Thanks for this video! I was actually planning on buying a gti today so it's good to see its still fun after a year and no major issues
Please don't say "emm kay six", it sounds terrible. The correct pronunciation is "Mark six".
Jacob Frey it's pronounced Golf Six...
@@comedyman112 mark 6 when talking about it mk6 when googling or looking up parts or when you're by yourself or with non vw guys
Golf Six is actually the right pronunciation, Golf mk6 is what people use for googling.
Love the new cam shots from the outside on the road. Truly ups the quality of the video! Thanks!!
Great Review! Great Car! I had a mk1 and fell in love with that car. 30 years later, it is still the most fun car I've ever had. Seriously considering waiting on the mk7.
What a review! Great stuff. Watched a few reviews and this by far is the best one, thank you. Picked up a 2011 MK6 today in black with DSG, love it.
I have the 2011 GTI Stock candy white 2 door DSG . i LOVE it! i bought the GTI after watching your first video, after wanting an R32 Skyline or m3 originally i decided on this after researching and came upon your 2 videos! thank you for the indepth honesty!
The new Mk7 body will be a 2015 model. It will be out by late spring of 2014. Which trim are you looking for? The supply for the Mk6 should be plentiful right now.
I love the camera angle that shows you shifting.
M k 5 ..M k 6 ..M k 7...lol
its pronounced Mark 5 ...Mark 6 ....Mark 7 in the UK
This really pissed me off in an otherwise good review
Mmkay?
From your pissy WW-II fighter jets that totally got blasted by Sovetski fighter jets?
...in the everywhere else in the world lol
Steven Adams was going to write the same thing.....and he called the seats a platted pattern.....tartan where I come from.
I have a 2010 2 door GTI. I still love it. I converted the iPod cable to 3.5 jack and connected that to a Dragonfly Cobalt DAC to play music through my phone. Sounds great on the Dynaudio system. I was thinking about getting the 2022 GTI but the electronics interface is terrible.
Did that Scion TC just run a red light? lol. Good Review as always! Don't listen to the others that complain about you doing reviews on older models. It gives a great insight on what the older models were like, and it helps people like us college students who are looking for used cars to decrease insurance rates
Thanks for the great upload, very informative
We noticed the same spongy pedal on a 2011 A3 as well. The GTI has better feeling brakes. Not sure why, but you do have to remember the current A3 is based on the old Mk5 Golf platform.
Sweet review Sofyan!
Good review, love your videos. Just curious, why dd you get rid of the GTI?
When we took delivery of the car they were quite dirty. For some reason GTIs seem to spew out a lot of exhaust soot and it builds all over the tips. We always just wipe them down during a car wash and it stays clean :)
really good review, thanks for posting.
I LOVE THE GTI!
Great video. I own a MK5 and it's been good to me outside of a stupid wheel bearing going out.
great review
thanks
I had a Mk 1 ('84) GTI in 1986 and, while it was a fun car, there were quite a few issues. A previous owner had replaced the rear windshield and the replacement was installed crooked (I didn't catch it until I brought the car home but the dealer did fix it at no cost). There was an exhaust leak that made it sound extremely loud (later fixed). A bad motor mount turned the entire car into a vibrator (also fixed). The worst problem was the temperature gauge which persistently registered nearly all the way to the high side (no fix for that one). My current VW is a Golf R (Mk 7) which only has some of those electronic glitches (intermittently failing backup camera, occasional blackouts of the entertainment screen). Sometimes an automatic up/down window switch fails to work automatically. And I did have to replace the clutch after adding APR Stage 2 which has brought a whole new meaning to the term "hot hatch." I've had the R for nearly 5 1/2 years and plan to keep it for many years to come.
Not necessarily, some buyers may not like the Mk7 or prefer not to buy the first model year of a new generation. Also, the price of the new one will be much higher and you won't get the special financing VW is offering on the remaning 2013 models. The Mk6 generation is still a great car, but we are excited for the new one as well.
i agree, i'm trying to wait it out for that one. looks very sleek and the performance has a nice bump in HP
been looking forward to this
We'd recommend checking out a Mercedes CLA or Audi A3 if you're looking to upgrade in a couple years.
With our 99 Jetta Wolfsburg, we've had electrical issues like crazy. Window motors go left and right. Bulbs go constantly. The battery dies every few months similar to what you said about the GTI. The coolant light blinks until you start driving and the engine warms up, yet there's plenty of coolant in the car. But all these things come with the VW love I guess. I love our Jetta, and with 166k miles, it still started RIGHT (after being jumped, of course) and ran like a champ, I love my Jetta.
Nice follow up review!
6:43 this guy scratched the center arm rest lmao
Holy hell, did that thing need motor mounts, or it just hits that hard when shifting? I'm curious, picking one of these up in about a month, still trying to find a six speed black on black leather.
I have those little electrical glitches too but the driving experience makes it all worth it
Do an in depth tour video of the Golf R please!
I'd probably lease one next time. Loving what VW has done with the new GTI or maybe the A3.
not getting the LED backlights is the biggest mistake you can ever do i adore them daily! people even make pictures of it xD for me it was a girl that took 5 pictures of the backlight
I’ve owned a 2008 Passat for a while now and I can confirm that the light bulb warning light comes on all the time. Basically the car can’t tell the lights are functioning until you turn them on for a second or two. Im happy this car comes with the tsi and not the tfsi. The tfsi in my Passat has almost 200,000 miles on it and is feeling the pain but is working perfectly fine except for a small head gasket leak. The tsi engine replaced the tfsi in the Passat late 2008 year models because of reliability issues and a shift of use for the most part. Both engines suffer from different issues but the tsi tends to have a little bigger but less common issues compared the the tfsi which would eat it’s own cam follower just because it could. In comparison the gti should be faster than my current car because it either has a dsg or a manual that connects to a lsd with added launch control. If you get one just know white smoke means drive home and black smoke means pull over immediately and reach for the fire extinguisher or in rare cases you almost turned your tsi into a tdi with some oil and a spark.
Cool review dud!!
Ahh the classic showdown between FWD and RWD or forced induction vs. naturally aspirated. We can't tell you which one is better, both are excellent. You need to ask yourself, how are you planning to use this vehicle on a daily basis and which one will be easier to live with for yourself?
hey man since you did a video on the 2nd gen tc can you do a video on the 1st gen tc?
I have a 2013 Drivers Edition with the DSG. Best car I’ve ever owned. Did have to have the intake replaced and while they were at it I had them replace the coil packs and spark plugs and it runs great at 95k miles.
Did you have to replace the timing chain tensioner as well?
My friend has a grey mk6. There was one package with hid headlights, the touchscreen radio and something else that I can't remember. These are the best.
I had to smile a little bit at the idea that because it is higher quality it is less reliable. That just sounds funny to me. But, I must say that regardless of this cars various electrical faults, I am completely in love with it after having seen this review. The GTI is not a car that I have every paid much attention to, and I had no idea that they were so completely brilliant. Good video!
Thanks a lot my friend.
I have a Candy White GTI too, yet to be tinted though.
What's the tint % on the back windows of yours?
Honestly, both are fun in their own ways. I like the ILX more for it's comfortable ride, superb seats, push-button start, and quieter interior. I also think the 2.4L engine gets the Acura up to speed a tad quicker than the GTI and I like the shifter much more in the ILX. The GTI has more low-end grunt but it doesn't pull as hard as the ILX at high speeds and the engine is too quiet sometimes. GTI handles curves better but sometimes the ride is a tad too firm on long-trips.
I need to replace my 02 WRX, and was thinking something a little less thirsty, and maybe (coff!-coff!!) FWD. To that sin I am considering the Focus ST and the GTi with the DSG. This is a great review of a used GTi. I'm one of those who wondered about reliability issues with the brand, so thanks for that too. I may be too old for an F-ST...but too young for a GTi? 63 and still shifting, and grinning from ear to ear!
Nice review.
Pretty town... where in Va. is that?
Chantilly area of northern va, looked like he was driving on rt 28 for a short section of the video
What the HELL is M K.
Its Mark. Mk is an abbreviation. You don't pronounce an abbreviation.
Can't listen to this . . .
fuzz Perhaps that utter stupidity makes sense to you.....but to those of us with a even modest command of the English language GTI is an acronym.....not an abbreviation. Acronyms are forms of abbreviation that are pronounced, abbreviations like etc, mk and so forth are not pronounced phonetically.....unless someone is an idiot.
We don't blame you. You have to be a German brand enthusiast to be able to justify to higher cost of maintenance. Even though they can be a pain, one drive and you will immediately notice how solid and tight they feel from behind the wheel.
Also may I mention that for 2013 any mk6 golf or gti or jetta sportwagen that was built after August of 2012 has a driver side cubby and a knee airbag as standard equipment, Wolfsburg had extra parts they wanted to get rid of I suppose since that was a euro only thing
em kay? Wow.
It handles great in the snow (just got a foot of the slippery shit) and It buts 203-205hp (dyno tested) to the wheels and 208 ft-lbs of torque which is amazing in the curves for such a light car.... The quality of my GTI is on par with audi and really makes other cars feel cheaply made.... At the crank it has about 234 according to calculations. All in all solid car handles amazingly well which has saved me a few times. The only car that could replace my GTI is a Golf R skyline44512 is not even close... and he forgot the Mazda Speed 3 and Evo 8.
evo 8 is a bit spendy tho
I want you to get the APR Stage 1 and follow up review.
What will be your new fleet car?
Good Review Of 2010 Volkswagen GTI. 😀
I was looking for a 2 door autobahn with navi with a standard transmission, the closest place to where I live has only 2 in an automatic transmission from when I last visited, neither autobahn. Do you think they could still find me one?
How do you feel about the 2013 GTI's having the Laguna wheels?
Not sure if anyone here mentioned it, but the GTI doesn't have a mechanical limited slip, just an electronic one, which kinda works, but isn't really a replacement for the mechanical type.
Love this car !
Does your stereo get dusty a lot? I find my car radio in my GTI is dusty all the time!
Soften, does the GTI have long and spongy and grabby brake pedal feel as the Audi A3? My experience with a 2010 A3 2.0T Quattro is that there's about 3-5 cm of free travel before the brake is actually engaged. My Q5's brake is much more responsive and confidence-inspiring.
I like the MK6 and am worried they won't have what I am looking for since it is so close to the end of 2013. Should I just wait for the MK7? I only can afford what the 2013 MK6 autobahn with nav is, which is like 30k? I really like the mk6 but like I said, I am worried they won't have what I want. D:
Please reply
can u guys give another update???
20:25 watch the white tc
mkvGTI haha
😂😂
17:07 Never realized how bumpy route 28 is...i guess that's a good presentation of the stiffness
@Daniel Kim this is Jackson's car(Sofyan's fiancé's) car and Sofyan's sold his fit for a Acura ilx
I have this car in manual love it. mine's 2011. 55'000kms no problems
really ? Im hesitant to buy one because of reliability but of all the compact card I drove , Civic , Mazda 3 etc this GTI was so much better
Rick Danner before you buy get a comprehensive inspection of the car and its history. Make sure it's a one owner vehicle and wasn't flogged (driven idiotically). When something eventually goes wrong (e.g. needing new turbo) it will cost you big, these cars require higher maintenance than others and regular oil changes. It's not too bad though at all!!! Nothing compared to BMW, Merc or older cars. It's pretty easy to keep it running, these engines are bullet proof, believe me, but just know you will need to be putting money into this car... So if you can JUST afford it, walk away it'll be a huge mistake you'll regret. If you have enough cash to throw at it, get one, they are amazing, the engine is ridiculously smooth. Just don't miss the services. :)
there's no point to have a car you can't afford you will just feel stressed each time you drive it haha just get something within your budget. I got rid of the GTI now actually but it was an awesome car... LOVE IT
thanks man - Ill would be getting a brand new 2017
seriously don't how do you feel about the mazda 3 can get one for about $17k brand new , 155hp manual (will only drive a manual ) and 4 doors and a hatch?
The whole point of a sports car is the added performance features such as added horsepower, upgraded brake system, stiffer suspension ect... The GTI's are designed for those that drive hard and want to have fun once in a while. For those who find the GTI to have stiffer suspension should definitely not be looking for one.
do you guys plan on getting rid of it anytime soon?
MARK.
I was thinking the same thing....MARK not 'em kay.' Em kay sounds like Mr. Mackey.
my name is mark lol
yes?
German cars are built with higher quality materials, they also have a much higher standard when it comes to fit and finish. Problem is, these cars also come with a ton of sensors and electronics. Perhaps the supplier they use doesn't put reliable as a top priority? Nevertheless, it's those pesky and complicated parts that are prone to malfunction or failure.
What are the common problem with these cars in the same year?
Thanks
If you tell the dealership exactly what you want, they will go and get that car for you. If there is not one locally to you, you can factory order the vehicle. VW is still building the Mk6.
10k to spend is a used GTI a good idea? I'm looking for a Honda SI too but they have 100k miles for the price of 10k. Gtis have 90-100k miles as well what should I do?
DID U EVER GET THE FOCUS ST BEY
Lol small world. I'll be taking delivery then driving my new white GTI on hwy 28 in the mooring too. Love the noise this car makes!
do you rev match?
keep in mind, a simple engine tune will release 20% of more horses, volkswagen de-tunes their cars from the factory so they dont compete with audis
this little bastard can easily hit 250hp or more with only a tune, nothing else
+Ryukachoo By "tune" do you mean re-mapping the ECU?
+Ryukachoo but de-tune those cars can make engine last longer tho
so true. i put an apr plus and im running 292 hp with just a tune.
Facts
@@marcuszarafonetis6544 how's it holding up?
i like the video but did you ever get pulled over?
Sofyan in 2010- “not everybody has $50-60k to spend. “
Average car price in Puerto Rico in 2022.
sofyan do u like driving the ilx better?
German cars seem to be hit or miss. I have an 11 6mt autobahn with 51,000 miles and have not had any electrical problems or glitches. I haven't had any problems period and I have driven it all over the place, Virginia, chicago, atlanta and now it resides with me in san diego california. I'm love it!
that car is amazing
We call my Mk6 GTI "The Bullet". My buddy calls his Mk6 "Zoomie". It can kick butt on about everything that wants "To Play". It's a mouse that roars. Way fun, way fast.
good review again and ppl need to chill. Check out how reliable hondas are right now, u'd be surprised.
i love mk6's i really wish i could own one :(
German car glitches.....such a pain. My sister had her vw tiquan less than a month, and already the navigation and radio went out. It was a pretty quick fix though. My friend has a passat, and 3 cylinders stopped working for some reason.
Does it drink oil?
Struggling to agree with the comment that the golf is an easy car to get out of - it’s rather squat and low and does take a bit of an effort, especially if you’re older
So what are you buying next??
Would this be a good first car?
does it have an aux cord hole
did you sold your fit and bought this one?
I use SD card slots all the time :)
I need some help, im definitely in love with the gti, but wich car will you recommend me... A 2010 GTI or a 2009 Honda Accord coupe? I know they are totally different cars but im a little concern about the cost of maintenance and the electrical problems on these VW's cars :/
On average how much do these run for?
Nice review. How would you compare this car to the MINI Cooper S?
I agree s get the last of the mk6 2014 it's still a great car!!!!!!
Perfect little college kid car. Pretty fun, but not as reliable as it should be. The water pump is absolute crap. So is the stock clutch. Fuel pump also kinda iffy. They replaced my water pump twice within 4 months of getting it, and I have a suspicion it's slightly leaking again. But even with those problems, it's still pretty close to perfect as a commuter
Ya vw halfassed on the water pump deal. I'd go for the Focus ST or a wrx. As a college kid....I say ford bronco all the way. Bullet proof truck, go anywhere and do anything and if you take out the back seat you can get lucky anywhere after doing anything too. lol. Only down side is gas, which really isn't that bad if kept on the highway.
+nezerac Do they still make those?
KutWrite
Of course not. Stopped making them in 96. The Expedition replaced it and is less capable offroad. Broncos are good everywhere.
+spacedreamer12 Agreed, I already had to change my water pump at only 80K miles :/
