Depends, its a great fun first car, just be prepared for the occasionally electrical glitches here and there and some higher than average maintenance cost.
at 6:25 he is wrong, don't believe him. TSI stands for Turbo stratified injection. GTIs are not twin-chargers, unless they are the 1.4 TSI which are only available for the European market. The main difference between the FSI and TSI is FSI has a timing belt and TSI has a timing chain. Although VWs don't come with the FSI engine Audi still makes them, so one is not necessarily better than the other, they're just different. BTW they both produce exactly the same power.
Nice to see that someone knows the exact difference between the engines lol this dude is not to bright I don't know where he's getting all the bullshit info from lol. He thinks the tsi is supercharged and turbo charged lol
If you are looking for brute force speed, we'd recommend the Mazdaspeed3 over the Caliber SRT-4. Despite the extra 22 hp, the Caliber is no quicker than the Speed3.
Thank you for making this video! I was looking at the 2016 golf R and I just about pulled the trigger….. awesome car, with these questionable times as far as work and insanity I am gonna look at a 2008 gti dsg sitting beside it, get my vw fix at a much cheaper price and still have fun driving to work😉
Automatic and GTI shouldn't go in the same sentence. Although technically this is a manual transmission with two clutches the driver doesn't operate any clutch with their left foot so it's automatic to me.
Really nice to watch. In the used sport compact market! Trying to decide whether or not the MK VI is worth the price over the MKV used. Looking at these two and possibly minis, primarily.
Very sexy car. Yet I still choose for the 2.5 Rabbit version just because I heard too many (negative) things about the oil usage of this vehicle. I read this vehicle goes through quite some oil (also depends on your driving habits I'm sure too) and changes are recommended to be done every 4-5000km. With other words, I got scared this vehicle would be too high on maintenance. Now one of my friends bought one and yep, there is a huge difference between the 2.0T and 2.5 I-5... sigh...
if it was 2008 and i wanted a sedan i wouldent hesitate to grab a civic SI. but in terms of hatches, a loaded autobahn 2008 GTI is my favorite bodystyle of GTI Volkswagen has made for me. its just so pratical and fun at the same time. doesent make you feel like your in an economy car with stiffened suspension a larger engine and a loud ride. (speed3) and even the subaru WRXsti
I bought a 2008 VW GTI 12 months ago. Since then, I have spent over $4000 in repairs. As much as I love cars, I refuse to ever buy a German car ever again. They (or at least VW in particular) have not only way too many issues, but require 2 - 3 times as much to repair. Such an expensive lesson to learn. I am sad. :(
That could have happened with any car. I assume that you did your research and bought a car with proper maintenance records, etc.. and just got unlucky. I've owned 4 VW's since 1995 - including a 2008 GTI which we still have - and all of them have been generally trouble-free. That said, if you're not buying a CPO German car, you takes your chances..
better rims, exterior looks a lot better, front and especially the back with that awesome bumper and exhaust in the middle, and ofcourse the sound of that engine coming out of the exhaust..
I have several VWs. Parts are eye watering as are servicing costs. And if you run them long enough, *everything* breaks. Loved the cars (hence 5) but they were a surprisingly expensive PITA. With a BMW you kind of expect it but VW is a budget brand...
I have a 4dr 2013 GTI....one thing I will like VW to do is have more leg space for the back passengers. I will be ok if the they made the cargo area a little smaller for more leg space for the back seats.
The FSI is BELT driven , the TSI is CHAIN driven my friend and there has NEVER been a turbo/ supercharged GTI . The FSI is a superior engine as witnessed by the fact the the current generation VW R has an updated version of the original FSI and is belt driven as well. You need to do your research more thoroughly before you make a video.
Nice car but impractically expensive to maintain after the first timing belt interval. I bought one of these at 90,000 miles that supposedly was well maintained by its original owner. After 70,000 miles, I've spent enough in repairs in addition to the purchase price to buy a brand new GTI (and that's with a high-quality discount repair shop).
I'm currently in the market for a MKV, have about 10 grand to spend, I could push 11 or 12 if I found a super clean one that was black w/ black leather. I'm actually having a hard time finding any for sale with black leather, extremely disappointing. Only about one in ten that I find are leather, and 3/4 of those are DSG, I want a 6 speed. Super frustrating, anyway, can anyone tell me if there's a certain year to avoid, or what mileage you think is too high? I will only drive about 6-8k miles per year so I feel like even 100k would be fine if the car was cherry, would prob need a timing chain by then tho eh? Thanks for any tips, opinions, etc etc!
I don't really like the way this guy always refers to the newer MK6. Yes, The MK6 is overall nicer because it's newer. We get it. Don't take off points due to it being an older car.
Tsi and FSI are very similar except ones more reliable then the other and one gets more power from mods than the other , if im not mistaken the FSI motor runs using a timing CHAIN and not the god forsaken pos timing belt that plagued vw's 1.8t the tsi has the belt and that means its less reliable they also changed the fuel pump on the FSI (i could be getting these engines reversed) the FSI also can produce a higher max output power wise when modding and if in not mistaken all gti's from 2008-til
What parts, spark plugs? Seriously, the parts that require you to buy from VW are expensive. For electronics and most of the hardware, you'll have to get VW parts. Second, I won't buy a 30K dollar and think "I might get a good one." Also, most people who have full-time jobs don't have time for DIY. VWs are never like "any other car," again go read reviews from owners, you'll see. They might drive well but you can get 95% the performance and 600% reliability with Japanese cars.
no thanks. i'll stick to my e46 bmw. drive it all year in canada and have put 100,000kms on it. A subframe problem (common) and dats it. as far as my 06 jetta 1.8t....oh lord are these things annoying. compared to volkswagen, my bmw is a toyota corolla. i doubt that gti is any less than the jetta. oh and yes i do my maintenance properly, but stuff like that u just cant thro
Yes it is a great first car. I brought one used with 15k miles. Nothing was wrong with it, drove like a beauty. Now of course, I wasnt planning on leaving the car stock. For a stock gti, it drives nice, and does have tons of potential. Great gas mileage i tell you, and it is also has a turbo. Now my gti mk5 is now stage 3, pushing 400hp and 350 torque. Put it like this, its a great car to tune up. Add me one facebook at Matthew Lividini & add me on Instagram at Wrxstigtievoboy19. You will see;)
This is a fun car. We still have our 2008, drove it to work this morning. When we were shopping for it, we lucked out as they had ONE loaded GTI in the whole city with autobahn - leather, heated seats, 18 inch rims, etc.. so we bought it. It's been an excellent car to own over the years and still feels extremely well put together. It's only got 78K on it as of today, so the big 80K service is coming up.
rusty wings, diverter valve problems, pcv issues, chain and tensioner issues, bad oil consumption, cam follower issues. rear spoiler has to come off just to change brake light. after all this i still love my mk5 gti.
rusty wings solved by vws 12 year paint cover, there is dv and pcv revisions plus aftermarket uprated versions, and as for the cam follower its easily replaceable. Can't say much about the other 2 issues as i haven't ran into them but yes i share your love for a brilliant car!
The Mini will be more fun in corners but the GTI will have a quieter and more comfortable ride. It will be the better daily driver of the two. In terms of reliability, they will probably be similar and both will require more maintenance as they get older.
The GTI requires expensive maintainence past the 100K mark. Its system uses oil to create hydraulic pressure, which eventually causes one expensive leak after another...I'm not even considering anything mechanical. A bit late, but I'm looking for an out so I can get a Jetta instead.
You know, in my opinion, this generation of GTI is my favorite. I get that the interior is more refined in the Mk6, but with that said, the Mk5 to me has more character and personality. And my comments extend to the exterior design as well.
Well obviously. The 2.0T has much 30 more horsepower and weighs less than the 2.5l. Not to mention that the 2.5 is pretty much flat torque/horsepower curve, which means no bursts of speed just flat acceleration. I would still take either of them over my 2.0l 8v lol. :)
In terms of reliability, we've had really good luck with our 2010 GTI at 41,000 miles. We do agree the maintenance can be more expensive but it's soo rewarding to drive and well built we're ok with it. You should try out a German car one day, there is just something about the way they drive that makes you forget the higher cost to maintain. Volkswagen's have gotten much better in that regard as you service them every 10k and require a large one every 40k.
In 2008.5 models came with tsi , and 09 till currently still have the tsi , and actually if your buying used its best to stay away from and FSI unless its CPO and you know the car has been well maintained they had a lot of recalls and tsbs out for the FSI and when the tsi came it solved all this problems
Hey Im thinking of buying a GTI just like the one in the video, but am held back because i have heard bad things about their reliability, are these cars really that unreliable ?
+Israel Ochoa I've had my 2008 for 4 years. Very little trouble, given routine maintenance. My biggest complaint would be the electrical system. Pretty glitchy, but all of it is with the car in park or off, and nothing that requires fixing. Also, living in an area with a lot of traffic can be very frustrating, because this car really wants to go, go, go. A more personal complaint, that I assume few would agree with, would be that there are too many bells and whistles. I'm a fan of simpler days (Volvo 240 *drooool*). That all said, I honestly never want to drive anything else, and that includes newer GTIs, and I'm not a VW fanboy by any means.
VW parts are much more expensive than parts from Chevy, Toyota, Honda and Ford. Read reviews from some owners. My dad owned 3 VWs and all 3 were nightmares: unreliable, expensive to maintain and fix. My neighbor has a 2010 Jetta and the transmission (DSG) failed on him in less than 2 years. Sometimes he gets towed to the dealer because it wouldn't budge. My friend had a 2011 Jetta 2.5 and already had problems with sensors and ecu, he gave it back to the dealer within the 30 first days.
Mini cooper S or mk5 Gti ? I'm having trouble deciding the Mini is overall cheaper priced (can get one with 50-90k for 6k-14k) and the Mini seems like a good car for back roads but at the same time I owned a mk4 gti and loved it and do miss it , any one got any suggestions? I believe from what I read the Mini is more reliable?
I have this same car. I was worried about VW reliability when I bought it new in 2008. It's only got 30k miles on it as of now so I haven't come across any reliability issues yet. There are multiple recalls for this engine, and VW will correct the issues for free at the delaership. Mainly the EGR valve and other bits related to it. Also with the DSG transmission, the mechatronic unit fails and will be replaced by VW for free. DSG has 10 year 100k mile warranty to compensate for issues.
love the channel, I'm in the market for a small four door compact and basically trying to decide between a 2013 honda civic si or a 2012-2013 vw mk6 GTI. I'm not totally turned off to the idea of buying used, I really like the GTI but I'm worried about reliability and maintenance cost. i know you/your fiance have a GTI. how is your experience with the GTI and would it pay off to wait for MK7?
Not much of a difference in terms of performance, and plus the gigantic VR6 engine in a R32 compromises its handling. With that much money, you could get an Audi A3 quattro.
This is by far one of the best VW GTI reviews on TH-cam. Thanks buddy :)
Depends, its a great fun first car, just be prepared for the occasionally electrical glitches here and there and some higher than average maintenance cost.

Daniel13l I believe TSI stands for "Turbo Straight Injection" whereas TFSI stands for "Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection"
Not necessarily, we just didn't have a video of the previous Mk5 GTI and figured you all would like to see how it drives ;)
If you are looking for brute force speed, we'd recommend the Mazdaspeed3 over the Caliber SRT-4. Despite the extra 22 hp, the Caliber is no quicker than the Speed3.
you think 72 degrees is bad. Come on down to florida, you'll truly have "fun in the sun" >:3
You ain't lying.
Think he means he's surprised by how warm it was for February
We sure do, it has 41,000 miles and we still love it!
im picking up mine on saturday! 4 door manual. woooohoooo
KrylonGreen yeah, how is it?
How is it lol
fucking sweet lol. i get lots of stares.
+KrylonGreen getting mine next week on Friday :)
+nyoike thuo Probably same :)
Obsessed is quite a strong word. We simply just review what is readily available, but yes, we do have our own personal preferences :)
I have a mk4 and I love it.
They’re definitely made to last :)
Thank you for making this video! I was looking at the 2016 golf R and I just about pulled the trigger….. awesome car, with these questionable times as far as work and insanity I am gonna look at a 2008 gti dsg sitting beside it, get my vw fix at a much cheaper price and still have fun driving to work😉
The burps are dsg signature, no burps on manual..
That dual clutch that Volkswagen does is insanely quick shifting wow~
Automatic and GTI shouldn't go in the same sentence. Although technically this is a manual transmission with two clutches the driver doesn't operate any clutch with their left foot so it's automatic to me.
I just had my 08' GTI's mechatronic module replaced on the DSG transmission for $2,700, I still don't regret opting for DSG
Really nice to watch. In the used sport compact market! Trying to decide whether or not the MK VI is worth the price over the MKV used. Looking at these two and possibly minis, primarily.
We just haven't come across one in good shape yet and are currently working with our Subaru connections to get a hold of one.
is it worth going from a 8th gen si to a 2007 gti 2 door?
We actually do compare its dynamics to the Mk6 toward to tend of the test drive :)
Instablaster.
Here in the US, the mk1 golf was called the "rabbit". GTI has always been it's own model/nameplate.
Tsi just stands for turbocharged direct injection actually, gti's dont have twin charged engines
Turbo stratified injection
Very sexy car. Yet I still choose for the 2.5 Rabbit version just because I heard too many (negative) things about the oil usage of this vehicle. better rims, exterior looks a lot better, front and especially the back with that awesome bumper and exhaust in the middle, and ofcourse the sound of that engine coming out of the exhaust..
black goo from the tail pipe while revving, oil in the turbo? 6:00
Aluzcz Its just water
auxiliary port is in glove compartment, not inside the armrest.
Man that thing sounds awesome!
I have several VWs. Parts are eye watering as are servicing costs. And if you run them long enough, *everything* breaks. Loved the cars (hence 5) but they were a surprisingly expensive PITA. With a BMW you kind of expect it but VW is a budget brand...
Great review once again. Can you do a video over that murano if they still have it, thinking about buying one. Thanks
just got mine LOVE IT
should mention it has leather and 6 speed manual
Nice review, man.
Passat CC has its rearview camera placed on the VW boot logo switch. BMW copied that design for their 6 series
I have a 4dr 2013 GTI....one thing I will like VW to do is have more leg space for the back passengers. I will be ok if the they made the cargo area a little smaller for more leg space for the back seats.
you should have done a review about an R32, its still the best version of this golf, far better than gti..
I'm looking to buy a used car, are you guys with a dealership? Would love to look around your guys lot, to see what you have "for sale."
The FSI is BELT driven , the TSI is CHAIN driven my friend and there has NEVER been a turbo/ supercharged GTI . hey u forgot to tell us about the bunny package my friends gti has the bunny package different bumpers
Nice Review Of 2008 Volkswagen GTI. 😁
To be honest i like more the sound of the VR6 than the 2.0 turbo...
Really helpful review! :) I still wonder how are they differ: the VW GTI and Honda CRZ and BMW 128i?
It's not a good review dude. almost everything he is saying about the car is not correct bro don't go off what he is saying about the car.
that engine movement at the start it 500% no good
it seems odd to me also... which might be the reason? brs
One of the engine mounts is likely knackered

I can buy one tomorrow with 162k miles clean automatic. No rust on the bottom for 4500 good deal?
Certainly a good price, I would have a mechanic look it over to be sure though.
HypnoticSuggestion right thanks and I will be doing that!
Good luck, they're good fun cars.
+HypnoticSuggestion buying a black manual with black wheels and seats tomorrow, only 40K miles
How much does this model go for?
I don't really like the way this guy always refers to the newer MK6. Yes, The MK6 is overall nicer because it's newer. We get it. Don't take off points due to it being an older car.
I think I prefer this mk5 over the mk6
If you are going to buy an auto, this is the one to get.

is that stock exhaust?
Dominic Luchtenburg yes

TSI turbo is awsomeen
Is 142k mileage too much for this car ?
gtis are good the big problem is electrical issues or oil leaks
wait electrical issues? must be a US thing
Ummmm twincharged stratified injection? No man, TSI is just Turbo Stratified injection. Newer VW’s aren’t Turbocharged and Supercharged
Chill out with the HID's already lol. They are fucking headlights that's not a perk/feature
no thanks. i'll stick to my e46 bmw. drive it all year in canada and have put 100,000kms on it. You used to be obsessed with Honda/Acura & now your obsessed with VW lol make up your mind lmao
Now , in 2007 50% were tsi and 50% were FSI. In 2006 all motors were tsi.
Yes it is a great first car. I brought one used with 15k miles. Nothing was wrong with it, drove like a beauty. Now of course, I wasnt planning on leaving the car stock. Garrett Morris don't watch and stfu then
That engine sound like diesel.
@chad qualls. Dont buy anything dodge!!!! Especially a caliber

Alexandria, VA, the weather has been bi-polar here lately. Today is is 30 degrees and snowing lol

So happy that I got myself a Black DSG 06' GTI, dream car achieved ^_^. You can check it out on my channel, just made my first video there.
there is no Golf badge on the car so it is technically only called GTI here. However, everyone pretty much knows its a Golf GTI :)
I like the R32 far, far more.
Mk6 GTI 4 door 7:08, it goes by quick

Coming from a guy who drives a 2004 Ford focus, will this car make night and day difference as far as acceleration? Lol
Matt Ryan yes, the turbo puts you into the head rest
It's actually still for sale at $14,888
is this a good 1st car?
Hey Im thinking of buying a GTI just like the one in the video, but am held back because i have heard bad things about their reliability, are these cars really that unreliable ?

+Israel Ochoa Over the year the lock will not function properly. This is a problem in all VW models even to this day
dsg in the mk5 gti was unreliable
Love my 07 GTI!
i like your chill voice
Yeah i have an 08 with 99k onit fun ass car to drive all day any day 😊👍👌
Unbelievable 72 today... You've never been to texas.
great review! I like the GTI!

Or buy them new and sell them before the warranty ends. That's the only way I'd get another one tbh, and it wouldn't be something I'd depend on.
Man can’t believe this but am getting mine this week and it’s a second hand 2007 MK5 and it’s 2019!!! Yay!
Definitely prefer a MK6 more, however I probably would take a MKV R32 over my MK6 GTI.
In terms of the driving dynamics, how does it compare to the MK6? I know you have the MK6.
