- In this second of a three part comparison, the guys introduce the 2010 GTI to the twisties and talk about how it ranks next to the MazdaSpeed3 and Volvo C30. For other reviews and more go to www.EverydayDriver.com

I love the look of the GTI and even the Golf. It's such a timeless and balanced shape. It doesn't have any offensive bits to it. Everything is so well resolved.
I just test drove a GTI and I agree with Paul, I was very impressed by the interior, and the steering wheel felt great. I was impressed with how planted it felt in the corners.
I love your reviews, guys. Keep it up!
I have this car 2011 model 6sp manual in black - and I LOVE the look of the car... Doesn't look overly sporty but the red details inside out, honeycomb grill, lights, stance 18 inch wheels ect make it look great to me and not over the top. And the interior is elegant and loovleh - very nice car to be in. And totally right, two personalities, one manic one fancy and relaxed
6 minutes of analogies. Still pretty entertaining.
You guys may take forever to bring out a video, but when you do it's awsome!!! Keep it up guys!! Quality over Quantity
@sspope - Excellent question. Lateral g testing varies wildly. So what we do is take a variety of sources and average them. Edmunds, for example has gotten a 2010 GTI lateral g of .84 in one test, .87 in another.
We don't consider any one source (including us) to be the definitive on measurements.
And ultimately, numbers and measurements are just that - numbers. From the drivers seat, there's no question that the MS3 has higher cornering limits and that matters to us more than the number.
Why doesn't this have more views? These guys are awesome!
In my opinion, the GTI DOES look amazing thank you. I drive a 2010 Gunmetal grey GTI 4 door. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!
@EverydayDriver Have you ever considered maybe doing your own instrumented testing? Just curious on how your shows capabilities would be if you did your own instrumented testing as Motortrend does. I'm not saying your show is bad in any way...honestly I like it because you're not trying to be someone you're not. You're honest without being cocky, and exciteable without being annoying. And I really like your comparisons of older/used cars.
Im 40 years old. Ive owned to GTI's. A '86 and a '02 1.8T. Ive also owned a '10 Mazda3 S hatch(till I got crunched). Ive driven the speed3 also. Both are superb cars with different missions. So for me its the well mannered grown up GTI. But I didnt get one. Instead I bought a 2012 VW CC 2.0T with the 6 speed manual. I drove bot with the DSG and just could not get used to the bogged down feeling when i first start. 0% for 72 helped too!!
You know a car is good when the only negative they can find is that you have to explain to your friends why it has plaid seats. I like how they never drastically change the appearance of the GTI. Because it is and always will be the coolest hatchback out there :)
@jonen9494 - We know Matt @ the Smoking Tire, and he does a great show. He also has a different approach than we do and some people prefer our show over his. There's no right answer - just personal preference there.
We also hope you noticed that both of the guys really liked the GTI. It is an amazing car, and deserves its awards. But no car is perfect either - and pointing out faults or opinions you don't agree with isn't lying.
GTI definitely is the best out of these three
One of my favorite cars!!
Well, this review pretty much sums up what the GTI is all about. It's not about power and handling (love Todd's comments about how the GTI is like 'I think you've had enough' while the MS3 just begs for more). You want to know what the GTI is all about?
Plaid seats, red striping, attention to detail for the interior, oh and brushed metal lips on window switches. It is a docile 'warm' hatch that aims to offer an upscale, refined easy-going driving experience.
Depends what you want. Since I'm in my mid to late 30's I'm more about the blend of refinement with some guts with decent looks that will keep for awhile and to me that's the GTI. The biggest concern though is probably reliability though from what I've heard its gotten better.
i personally think the GTI wins this no questions asked. simply because, i'm not always in the mood to race, most times i'm too lazy to drive around something like an Evo, its just demanding. this car makes a great commuting car, not too high on RPM's and its quiet, you get around just fine, and when you want it too, it can go well over the 2x the speed limit.
and its a roomy car for a small pacakge, it just does everything you would want, and does it just right.
its just a great car.
Still looks good today unlike the competition.
@EverydayDriver
There seems to be a massive handling difference between the plain tires that came on the 17" wheels and the summer (or at least performance all-weather) tires that come on the 18" 'detroit' wheels.
You may want to do a follow-up review on the GTI since starting in 2011 the better tires are now standard.
great vid.. what about a comparison with the scirroco..?
The Mk6 GTI actually runs at 230-234 at the crank and the stated hp 200-204 is WHP (no bullshit) but what is important is that 208 ft-lb of torque on a car that weighs in around an RX-8 just makes it so nice in the twisty's.
the mk5 has 207 lb/ft torque so that is quite good considering it was 197hp or 200hp.
I wouldn't know and wheel torque and hp? and honestly my car needs some upgrades It's not feeling as fast as it used to.
OspreyBravo18 It is purely down to you being used to the power or the car I reckon as these engines rarely go wrong.
What did you drive before the Golf?
I know I'm getting used to it and I went from an 2003 Acura TL to a Rav 4 for a few months and then to my GTI which feels pretty tame now but when I look down to see my speed... I'm glad I don't run into cops often
I can tell you are American or Australian. Acura TL? small car? toyota rav4 we get them here.
Yeah back on topic, when you are used to the GTi like all things you become accustomed to it so it seems slower than it really is. They are nippy cars. This is why people who are car enthusiasts always want something faster as an "upgrade" so to speak.
you guys should do civic si vs gli vs mazda 3
ive found that people who know cars (and have experience with them) tend to appreciate german cars such as the GTI for their refinement and quality
I know it wasn't available when you were doing this review, but you should review the Golf R and compare/contrast to this video. Just a suggestion. Nice work, though.
It is not necessarily a bad thing that the GTI has different goals in mind than the MS3. There are people out there who would rather drive a 200hp plaid-upholstered sofa, and that's okay. It's just that when you start looking towards the other end of the spectrum (MS3) you HAVE to give up some comfort in return for better power and performance. I think that even the MS3 is watered down from the factory as it is, and requires several mods to make it more like how the engineers wanted it to be.
Ive had several vws and have not had one break down on me. Had a mkiv gti for a few years never had one problem except a blown fuse that cost $2 to replace. I'll be getting a new gti or maybe r20 if those come to the us as my next car, bought a 08 350z a couple years ago b/c i was tired of the "underpowered" gti, looking back the GTI was the best car ive owned in a lot of ways, although not the fastest.
xchobo84x only need a remap n exhaust 260ish bhp at wheels is fast for a small gti especially with the torque figures after stage 1 aswell
The GTI seems like a winner, with the solid feel and body styles (2 and 4-door hatch, sedan, and wagon), and you can even get a huge sunroof unavailable in the MS3, but has VW improved their reliability enough to make it worth buying?
@EverydayDriver But the review by Edmunds mentions their Gti was on all season tires which harmed lap times significantly. I've also read some other hot hatch comparisons literally stating that Golf turns in better than MS3 wich has harder suspension and isn't that the whole point of engineering an everyday sports car?
Was your test car equipped with all season tires too?
nice car, but don't expect VW to honor your warranty, they will just tell you "thats normal". DSG is a problem also. google vw problems.
Someone help me out? I have a Cobalt SS Turbocharged (factory turbo) with 350whp. My Cobalt is about to be paid off (at the time of this response I have 5 months of min. payments left). If you were in my shoes would you sell your SS/TC for a MS3 or GTI; or keep the SS/TC and enjoy no more payments? I am wanting more quality, but I'm also digging not having a car payment while in college. Both options seem good especially since financing a MS3 or GTI will be less monthly than the SS/TC was...
@555NaKuL yes, easily reflash the ECU. you change the system that manages the engine and how it runs. most modern cars, I think more the european ones, are like that
Ok, the bold guy had his mind made up before the test...
Can you guy review the new 2015 Golf R. How would the new gen Golf R stake up?
You're in luck - We're shooting the Golf R vs. the 2015 STI in about a week. Review will be out in April, 2015. Thanks for watching!
First car I'd actually prefer cloth seats over leather just for the cool plaid design.
Love how there's NO mention of them being recalled
We have to note that Europeans cars are little bit different in the US. Because of the certain laws and requirements we have in the states, GTI in Europe is different from GTI in US. They brought the Fiat 500 recently and Fiat had to change a lot of things to make it legal in the US. and I am sure VW had to do the same for their cars.
James Sohn do you know the differences I actually never knew about this
No, some people do need to be explained to as to why some things are cool.
Can you guys link your videos in the description?
You guys should do another review with the NEW Volvo C30 R-Design THEN we'll be in business. :)
can you guys do a corvette review c4 c5 c6? like the nissan
Although i actually like all 3 cars they mention, i have to say the mazdaspeed 3 should of been #1 for 263/280 (more torque than a 370/g37 and base v6 camaros/mustang for a stock car costing rougly 24k thats an insane deal, its like the GTR in subcompact hatche form.
What you do light it on fire? I am at 130,000+ miles on mine and it is tracked and is fine. 2010 GTI
@sspope each reviewer could have been using different tires, cause i know consumer reports always is much slower in terms of driving, their slalom for the gti is like 55 mph while others are in the high 60s almost 70
GTI owns all. End of story.
Has it been a year since the last video? feels like it...
..Part 1 definitely didn't show up in my subscriptions :(
You're right when you say both options seem good. I just finished paying off my BMW 328i a year ago and it's been great having no payments. Even though paying for gas and insurance still makes it feel like i'm making payments. I'm choosing to sell it and use the money for a down payment on a GTI next spring when hopefully more of the 2012's are coming back and I get get a gently used one. It's just hard to wait. I love the BMW but I want something fresh and with a warranty.
Well, to reply on a serious note. What I ment is simply that there has got to be something wrong with what they look at etc.. It is known to pretty much all car enthusiasts that the Golf GTi is a top pick when looking for a hot hatchback.
It also seems to me like this is some kind of weird American misconception, as no review show in Europe could have said this.
Saying they were lying was probably a mistake though. But not everything is preference. Some things are just fact.
Cornering limits 0.87g? Similar to Taurus? That understeering pig?
Versus MS3's 0.90g? Where are you getting your information from?
*
Because in every other magazine they got it the other way around!
for example:
Motortrend
MS3 - 0.90g
GTi - 0.91g
*
CarandDriver
MS3 - 0.92g
GTi - 0.93g
*
TheSmokingTire
Gti beats MS3 around a track and it certainly isn't down to power.
*
It's not the first time I noticed your G's were a bit odd. I guess you sometimes get them from separate sources for each car.
why were they recalled?
@4c3NiNja
APR ECU Stage 1 gives the GTI the same power you get in the MS3.
What about the Mini Cooper S?
@EverydayDriver
Well, true. I prefer Matt's show, obviously. I just think you focused a bit too much on the little faults, adn the things you did not like about it..
Just my 5 cents. Thanks for the reply annyways, considering it was quite mean..
GTI FTW
As Jeremy Clarkson would say..."Goood car. Goood car" as he licks the steering wheel and pets the dash.
VW runs the ECU for economy driving. if you wanted power, you can easily reflash the ECU and turn a 115 HP engine into a 145 HP engine.
Nathan A you can turn these Gtis into over 300bhp at fly wheel actually the vw standards refer 207bhp at the wheels meaning fly wheel bhp will be around 240 which ever you wanna say it lol a remap dramatically changes the gti
@xxdomeafvrndiexx yeah if they ddidnt include the mazda
to skip fail ad 1:27
Christie Brinkley??
and your comment confirms it.
austin..
what do u drive?!
Looks better with the HIDs
DSG problems mate. Volkswagen are being sued in Australia in a class action due to issues with this gear box.
i really want to get this car but vw's low reliability scares me. should i just get a honda?
@sspope tires have alot to do with it
@GodKid20 really, even small engines like a 1.4?
@TSWRgtivr6Vdub what used car did you end up getting?
Hard to not like this car? Have you seen the exteriour?
@doublearon86 and you gotta pay to shop there as well
gti is the best looking i think.
cool!
@scm11904 because I like a single show giving two opinions.
Same
really nice car! German cars are totally the best! So greetings from Germany :D
The guy in red, if you can't find bad things to say about GTI, just don't say it. All those cons you mentioned are pointless to people who love GTI.
just like your comment is pointless haha
Why is the 2010 one .8 seconds slower 0-60 than the 2006?
Altitude of testing (most likely)....or maybe it's heavier.
+shameshotproduction Mk6 GTI 0-60 times have been documented on multiple car magazines and websites to actually be between 5.8-6.2
its heavier
Where's the Subaru Impreza WRX Hatch??
holy fucking shit. you guy are still around?
Bring the Focus RS to the US!
plaid seats rule
how can you say the gti doesnt look good man
People shut up about the seats VW knows some don't like the plaid so they offer leather so its black and the interior is far better in the GTI than the other two
iPhone's started it all.. Everything is a clone of it. Sure the android phones may be better bigger etc... But still clones. These guys are great reviewers. The vw Gti/r32 are the only hatch to come as a dct right? Or as an auto at all? Need a fun daily... Too bad (and good) the fords (st's) are only manual
there are alot of hh without the turbo
Every person who rides in mine automatically think the seats are cool... Haven't had to explain it once.
205 1.9 gti ftw.
Nothing that I haven't heard before....
Everyone has their own tastes in cars, for luxury, gti, for speed. speed3. for the volvo, im just not a fan of those, lol.
2:56 uh what
Compared to TheSmokingTire this is just junk.
Boooring, and not even telling the truth. The GTi won the car of the year ( TopGear UK) some years ago, and it's still an AMAZING car!
Hold on generi that will all change spring 2014 hold on its coming hehe
you mean any hyundai
@jaks1989 The GTI in the US is a downgraded European version, VW doesn't have the same image and reputition in the US, so VW tries to keep their cars as cheap as possible to stay atractive in the US market.
hahahha thats what my friend says all time !
You claim a hot hatch has to have 200 hp , what u mean is hp per tonne . Does that mean abath 695 , polo gti aren't hot hatches
Feista st
Ben Chesterman this video was made in 2010.... herp derp
These little cars are so expensive 25 grand is a lot for a car you expect teenagers to drive.
1:28 to skip the ad (thumbs up this comment)
@BIMBOBOB22
Absolutely NOT. Never believe in outdated stereotypes like "german reliability." VW's are legendary for their hefty repair bills.
i have an 1986 toyota mr2, naturally aspirated with aftermarket exhaust and i beat these crappy gti's everytime the little punks driving them want to race.for a new turbocharged car, thats pretty sad.
