  • 2010 VW GTI Review by The Straight Pipes. Yuri bought a Mk6 GTI for his wife. It's a DSG even though he always complained about the DSG's being boring. Could this be the best used car bargain?

    Excellent video!
I’ve had my 14 gti for a year and ABSOLUTELY love it! I’m at 89k miles and not a single issue except ignition coils and a PCV replacement. The biggest thing I have to say with these cars is CHECK THE OIL FREQUENTLY! Every 900-1000 miles mine goes down a little past half a quart. It’s like clockwork.
Second big one is to check the PCV, every fill up. I personally check around the PCV for leaks. You can tell it’s bad by starting it, and unscrewing the oil cap. If it starts to idle rough and you feel the cap being sucked back in, then it’s bad. It’s very important to replace it soon or it blows the rear main seal.
These cars get such a bad rep for reliability when all it comes down to is preventive maintenance and research. The only 2 things that will fuck your day and your bank account on this car is the timing chain tensioner grenade, and the bipolar mechatronics unit. If you get the DSG, change the oil every 30k miles. Trust me...it says 40k, but mine was low after 30k. This is the main reason the Mechatronics unit fails. If you’re lucky the clutch pack will fail before it does.
Lastly, I’d like to reiterate to new mk6 owners...once again...please keep an eye on the oil. If your lifters sound louder than normal, check the oil, if you have any doubt, check the oil. Don’t be that guy/gal who ends up browsing eBay for used 2.0 TSI engines.
    FAQ:
Whats the clear fluid leaking from the passenger side of my car?
    AC draining...
EPC light flashing, car spuddering, what’s wrong with it?
    Check the Ignition coils.
I feel a noticeable loss in power and less gas mileage, why is that?
You may need a carbon cleaning.
Pool of oil near the middle of my car, what’s wrong with it?
Rear main seal may have gone.
What’s the slick oily dirt around my engine?
Valve cover may need to be reglued. You heard that right, the Mk6 doesn’t actually use a gasket it uses a glue. Why??? Because German. 😂
Those are just a few issues I’ve seen from personal experience. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me! 😎

I've been a service writer at a VW dealer since 2008. CHANGE the timing chain tensioner on that car LIKE YESTERDAY! It gives you NO warning it will fail and when it does, disaster strikes.
We charge $705 to replace one at my dealer. And I recommend changing the ignition coils on any pre 2013 GTI. A set of the revised coils is cheap around $100.00.
The intake manifold, oil separator/PCV and the high pressure fuel pump are common failure points on this engine. Don't drive the car 10 feet if you hear odd whistle or air noises under the hood. That could be the oil separator which can make the crankcase pressure high and blow the rear main seal out, making a $290 repair a $1400 repair.

I’ve had mine since 2013. Wolfsburg Edition. Bought it new. Tuned it with APR stage 1 @ 5,000 miles. Currently has 150k miles and has been trouble free the entire time. Just do your regular maintenance, get a carb cleaning every 40-50k miles and you’ll be golden.

I’m a vw tech with a tuned mk6 gti. Cctas are our bread and butter. Just keep up with the maintenance. Do oil changes 5k not the recommended 10k and get on those codes when they hit and you’ll be great with this car. It has many issues but taken care of you shouldn’t have a problem.

Daily driven my for 150k miles, 75k with the k04 turbo (+40% power and +80% torque) and all I've had to do, apart from mod support, is replace front sway bar mounts, endliks, a MAP sensor and an O2 sensor. The O2 sensor was probably mod related though! Really it's been very reliable for me.

Yuri! You don't have to hold down the hatch button on the keyfob to unlock the hatch. Just click the "Unlock" button on the keyfob twice and your right door and the hatch will unlock automatically. OR you can go into the MMI (the screen between the two gauges) and set the locks to "Unlock all doors." That way, when you click the "Unlock" button once, it'll unlock both front doors and the hatch.

I bought a used 2013 refreshed Beetle turbo convertible. Same engine, same specs. Bought it in 2015 with 25,000 miles. Bulletproof except for auto door locks.
DSG fluid needs to be changed every 40,000 miles (can do it yourself). I change the engine oil myself every 5 to 7 thousand miles. It is direct injection but so far at 80,000 miles no rough idle. DSG has been a little notchy when cold at low speeds. Sport mode is a blast to drive, just not in stop and go traffic. Good choice Uri!

  • @Krauser1226

Stage 1 it! My Mk7 is stage 1'd and it's perfect. You won't get the same power out of a stage 1 on the Mk6 as you will on the Mk7s but it's absolutely worth it for only software and no other physical modifications. I've got nothing else on my Mk7 as far as mods besides a set of BBS wheels for my summer tires and the DSG tune to go along with the ECU tune, and it's been an amazing daily. Nothing like getting almost 40mpg on the highway with over 300 horsepower and 300 lb/ft of torque when you need it. Not a single maintenance issue either and I'm gonna turn 90k miles soon. Couldn't be happier with it as a daily.
Also, hell yeah on the 2 door. Sad they don't make them anymore. I've got a 2 door Mk7 myself and it pained me when they announced they weren't making the coupes anymore. Just fits the car so much better if you ask me.

Bought my Mk7 GTI new in January of 2015. Not one single problem yet and coming up to 5 years of ownership and 66,000 miles I couldn't be happier of the VW reliability. Services every 10,000 miles and I've only spent about $2000 in total maintenance for my 5 years of ownership. That's like $400 a year, minus tires and gas. I'd say they are way more reliable than they used to be.

Hey Yuri, welcome to the club. I drive a '10 Red 6spd, with 160k miles on it (and just put VikingContact 7s on last weekend). I'd love for you to check out the Noname RCD330 if you're looking to do a swap of the head unit for Android Auto. Thinking about putting that unit in myself, and could use a good, honest review. One more thing - if you pop out the blank switches in the center console, and reinstall them upside down, they make perfect coin holders - one of my favorite fun and random mods. Enjoy!

Love it! I’ve got a MKV with the Mk6 TSI engine that I bought used. It’s a fun car but some repairs/break downs can be annoying. Mods are great in moderation - nothing extreme but little things here and there help. Stage 1 tune, upgraded rotors/brakes, Koni dampers, VW Driver Gear springs help a lot. Don’t know about CAD GTIs but US ones often came with all seasons, so switching to summers helps. I prefer the 17s (eg Denver’s) and they don’t curb as badly. Or thump as much over bumps

I did a stupid thing and straight swapped my ms6 for a 2007 stage 1+ gti at 267000km lowered and full turboback with no previous history on kijiji. It's been fairly reliable but the most annoying repairs are everything plastic on the engine leaks. Replace the oil cooler + gaskets, thermostat water pump etc. Rear caliper and ebrakes also had to be replaced. The plastic intake mani on that gen might crack so save for that and take a look at the timing chain tensioner so your engine doesn't blow . Fun cars !
