It seems that my coupon stacks with the sale they're having right now, bringing the price down to $629.99 USD with free worldwide shipping (link and coupon in the description). I initially installed the 7600M XT driver package, but it overrode the 7840HS driver. To avoid any issues with using AMD APUs, just install the 7600M XT "driver only" during the installation. As of making this video, I haven't found a good way to use this with the ROG Ally X or Legion Go. It causes the Z1 Extreme driver to become corrupted unless you use DDU to reinstall it when switching back to mobile gameplay.
I've heard that with these handhelds with AMD APUs that the egpu experience is actually better with nVidia GPUs which is counter-intuitive. You can have both drivers installed and it'll simply just use the nVidia drivers when the eGPU is connected (if I understand it right.) I have a GPD Win Max 2 and I've been tempted to grab an oculink eGPU dock. Minisforum has one for about $100 I think.
Got mine for rendering while traveling, using Blender. It's been a real life saver, and means I can go anywhere and render while I'm at the coffeeshop. Love the fact it's self-contained and doesn't require a huge power brick to haul around like the others I've seen. I 3D printed a new stand for it to stand vertically on the desk/table. This is an awesome bit of kit.
I actually always going just with a Framework laptop in the future and add a eGPU with that amount of IO for desktop use because it feels more versatile to me. The design is nice too despite being silver-ish (I prefer matte black for my tech), by now just more systems need to support USB4 and/or Oculink and I know it's especially difficult with AMD stuff because barely anyone supports it.
Since the eGPU is loud under heavy load and you have a long USB4 cable you could tuck the eGPU away from the monitor/top of the desk so you hear the extra fan noise less. Better solution than setting the eGPU to silent mode.
I tried moving it to a few positions underneath my TV stand but I could hear it anywhere I put it which is why I left it on silent. Great idea though, that would probably work well depending on your setup.
Seems pretty awesome. Kind of sucks about the ally x compatibility. I wonder how it works with gpd handhelds since they show it hooked up to their own handhelds in all of the ads for it.
i'm planning on buying this EGPU for my Legion Go, but as you mention in the video that there is a problem regarding AMD driver of z1 extreme and for the 7600M XT.
a shame that rog ally have a propietary connection. I use my rog ally as my pc with linux, it would be cool to connect a egpu when I'm using it with the dock the next handheld pc that I will buy it need to have a vrr screen and thunderbolt/oculink porf
I believe I'm on the latest bios update but it seems like there's a few ways to get it working well.

Hi there. Can You tell me about fan behaviour: is it running or standing in stand alone mode-just with power switched on and with no peripherial connections? I think, that my G1 is defective. Also didn't have any Windows system to USB device connecting sound. Thnx in adwance.
It should be completely silent when turned on (in its standby mode) but not running with the PC. If your audio isn't working, check the output settings in Windows.
I also have this GPU. It was not working well with my high end AMD M5 cup will try with my laptop Asus zenbook S16 . Need clrfication should I downlaod driver for AMD side?
Install the "driver only" from AMDs website. The only issue is that if you use an AMD apu, the drivers for that GPU might be corrupted and you'll need to use DDU to remove everything and start with a fresh driver install after.
rog ally x didn't get a new driver update recently? that guide is pretty much for legion go. do you have a ally x to test it out? really looking forward to get one

I definitely agree, it's a great piece of tech. What's your mobile editing rig got spec wise?

It works. You have to do some extra steps to get both driver sets going but it is possible

It works on the ally x its just a pain In the ass but I was able to play mine even unplugged from it :) just gotta mess with settings in game.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet but there's a guide on how to get it working:

allly X
Shame about the driver issues with the Ally X or I probably would've considered this
Hey quick question I seen they did a new upgrade on the BIOS 305 did it fix the driver issues when connecting to it now ?
I believe I'm on the latest bios update but it seems like there's a few ways to get it working well.

do you need UPS when using it ?
Nope, just a regular power source is fine.
2:30 - I think he’s saying it made out of metal.
The external GPU is, yeah.
Does that add on the site say 4000 shaders and then it only has 2000sh on gpuz?
Hmm didn't even see that when I made the review. Should be 2048 according to tech power up.
Damn really ?! It doesn't work at all on the ROG Ally X because i was thinking to buy one
It does but it's not simple to get working. Here's a guide I found on setting it up with the Z1E APU:

GPD claims this is faster than a RTX 4060 mobile, but it seems like that's false. Anyone here can prove this right or wrong?!
