Great video as always. I own both devices, but just wanted to watch your content. You actually talked me into getting the EG01M dock for my Win Max 2 and I'm so happy with it. It's replaced my full desktop. Keep these great videos coming!
@behindzmoose Sweet! I'm so happy I was able to help. It's so amazing, right? Cheers to you, my friend, and enjoy that setup. I appreciate the support!
Question since you have both the win max and win mini does the win mini get as hiot as the win max? Also when the win mini gets really hot is it really in unbearable to hold because of the heat when playing AAA games?
Yes I did my best to pretend that the heat didn't bother me past 15w for months. I'm sad to say that it is unbearable for many triple a games over 15 watts. If you stay within that range though, you will be fine
Im still choosing Win Mini for the portability. I have a desktop, Steam Deck if I want a bigger device. But this Mini, I can throw in my backpack, pocket, etc... i don't plan to play the latest and greatest AAA games on it but managing tdp between 8w to 15w, it is the sweet spot to not get too hot.
I think the heat on the mini was mainly due to the 2230 SSD, not the CPU because ever since I did the 2280 shell mod designed by ciphray on the GPD discord, my mini has been a lot cooler. I did the PTM7950 repaste prior to doing the shell mod but that didn't help. While my CPU temps have improved slightly, I noticed my 2TB SN740 2230 SSD was reaching 80 C. Now that I have a 4TB SN850X 2280 SSD in my mini thanks to the 2280 shell mod, my SSD temps hardly go past 55 C and my mini has been a lot more comfortable to use.
I run bazzite OS on a compact thunderbolt 4 hub, velcroed onto back of the display , uses a nvme drive, and there is less heat since I'm not running the internal ssd but the hub gets hoooot
Thank you for the information man! Is there software to prevent key presses when using the trackpad or is it just really awkward to use the trackpad? Also is it impossible to play games due to lack of comfort or could you manage in certain positions (win max 2)?
Hi there, thanks for taking the the time to watch. The trackpad has been great. One of the best trackpad I have every used. Very responsive to the touch and the top bumpers and trigger buttons can be used as left and right mouse clicks. As well as directly on the track pad. Also, it never gets in the way of gaming either. As far as the comfortability while gaming, it's not the most comfortable device that I have used, but it certainly isn't a reason to not buy it. It have gotten use to it over time and my hands have adjusted to it. Are you considering getting one? What's your use case? Knowing this, I can give you better advice.
@@Slyclientthetechdad Ah good to know thank you. Yeah i wanna get one for gaming and school all in one device. Im just most concerned on how good itll be for school like for typing for long periods of time

As always you never disappoint with your videos! But I'm uncertain about which one to choose. Hi there! Great video. I own the GPD Win Max 2 6800U. And I did want to point out two things you didn't mention or talk about. #1) Do you happen to know if they refreshed the display panel since the Win Max 2 2023? The panel on the Win 2 I have is so bad. Don't get me wrong pictures, and low motion media looks amazing. But any fast motion or scrolling in 2D games and the pixel response is really poor. Ghosting and trailing abound. It has to be 15ms+ or worse. Even when playing 4X Strategy games like Stellaris. Scrolling the map any test on display becomes like comet with a full trail. This really disappointed me with the Win Max 2. Your game runs at a smooth 60fps, but the image quality is a blurry mess. I couldn't help myself and ordered the Win Mini 8840U. Rumor has it it's pretty much the same panel as the ROG Ally. And that for me is a game changer! Finally a GPD Device with a great native landscape display! VRR is just icing on the cake. #2) I believe that since you don't have a good time gaming with the Win Max 2 in handheld mode. It prevented you from noticing that at 15W and up, on medium to long sessions. Once the metal top part of the chassis has time to warmed up. The device can get extremely hot just like the GPD Win Mini. Because of the metal top chasis, there are portions of the top case that could probably give you a light burn if you were to press on it while running fule bore at 20W+ watts.
Good video, I had the win max 1, but I sold it because it started to be too short to play. Regarding the win mini, do the grips help you feel less heat in your hands or are they not worth it? About the power, which one? Does it work better with AAA games? Does the win max 2 feel hot in your hands?
Hey thanks for checking out my video, I've never used the grips but I do know many people like them. I've heard that it does help a bit with the heat. This may sound silly but I find the grips to be a bit awkward and goofy looking lol. I also dont like the fact that they cant be removed without unscrewing them. The mini without the grips is so comfortable and i personally think the idea of grips takes away from the natural feel of the device. As time goes on, it has become clear to me that unless you go out of your way to modify the Mini with grips, PTM7950, or even more invasive mods, this is an either amazing max 15 watt device and it's also an amazing device using and external display using a egpu dock. However, handheld unplugged sessions above 15 watts can become annoying due to rapid battery decline and the heat. EIther way you have about 45 minutes because the battery will need charging or you will become so annoyed that your hands are hot. LoL Sorry for the long response but just being honest. Not to mention I'm a bit salty with seeing all the reviews of the Ally X with the 80 watt battery, I don't even want one but I'm still so jealous of that battery life. Haha
Hey Tech Dad, very informative video indeed. BTW any news on the upcoming Minisforum DEG1 eGPU dock ? That thing would be stellar for my um780 xtx mini pc. Any plans on a review on that ? Many thanks.
@TheNumberDisplayedIs Hey there, thanks for taking the time to watch it. I'm so intrigued by that DEG1 EGPU. All the Minisform seem really cool. It's definitely on my agenda to review. I just looked, and it looks like it's available. I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it so thanks. Stay tuned, If I can get a hold of one, I'll be do a video for sure.
@@PPX14 I personally prefer it over a lot of things. Even some laptop track pads are worse than the nub. But it has a touch screen too anyway, so you can also just poke the screen to click on stuff real quick.
Do you mean the joystick mouse controls? If so, it's awesome. Was using it last night and thought to myself how flawlessly it worked. The regular trackpad works well too.
i just hit subscribe. i've been considering win mini but due to price initially i opted for mini 2023 7640U which only available currently but i was concerned with heat issue. then i shifted to mini 2024 8840U but still unsure whether heat issue still persists or not. i plan to use mainly fo gaming (FF14 dawntrail to be specific). with steamdeck LCD i only get 40ish fps mostly with lowest setting, otherwise the CPU temps would go higher than 75C.
@adtsiriusstarr112 Hey, thanks for watching. I think you made a great choice. Yes, all of the Mini's get a little Warn but they are still amazing devices. For Dawntrail, you should be fine and you will definitely get higher fps at 15w tdp. I recently was able to improve my thermals on the mini by using PTM7950. The Phawx has a detailed video showing how to install it. It's easier than I thought and I've seen improvements of around 5 degrees cooler. Check out his video if you haven't. Did you order your 8840U yet? Also, do you plan to use it handheld mostly or connected to an external display.
@@Slyclientthetechdad i plan on using it handheld as i already have dedicated gaming laptop. I supposed to receive my mini in 10 days. I hope its gonna be great for mobile gaming 😊
Thank you for the review. I have never beaed of GPD before. The device hits all my needs. 3 questions: Is it safe to use in terms of security ? Is there warranty offered ? Is it reliable ?
@jujud5224 Hey, thanks for watching. GPD devices are really cool. Which one are you considering? As for security, I have never had any issues. However, many folks who purchase GPD devices will wipe them clean when they arrive and reinstall drivers. If security is a concern of yours, you may want to do the same. It's easy and GPD provides the drivers on their web page. If I were you, I would only buy a GPD Device through Droix. Look them up. They provide a great warranty and even better customer service. They even inspect the device before they send it to you. I personally would never trust indigogo. If you have an issue with the device, it will need to be sent back to GPD in China, and who knows when you will get it back. Droix cost more bit worth it in my opinion. My devices have been very reliable. Little tweaks here and there like increasing ram speed and I had an issue with my WM2 in boot up. Turning if fast start up resolved that issue. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions let me know.
No problem anytime. Also, a new Bios update was just released 2 days ago on the Max 2. I mention it because it speaks to the fact that the device is still getting lots of support from the manufacturer. Good luck and thanks again for reaching out
i haven’t done any gaming literally since the 80s and i recently got a gpd winmax . my question is where do i even by / download games ? i have no clue .
Nice, welcome back to the gaming club. You should download the pc app Steam. Just google search steam games and download the app to you machines. Once you do create an account and you can't start buying games. If you have any questions after you do that give me a shout.
If connected to a wall charger most of the time, I would get the one with the bigger screen. The device would probably be hot so I would use and external controller with it.
I’m heading off too college this August, I was considering the gpd win max 2. I’m having a hard time decking on whether I should get an iPad and steam deck oled or just the gpd win max 2.
The steam deck would be a better companion for you if you only intend to game. But the Max 2 will do it all for you. Hefty price tag but worth it if you can do it. You'll get more use out of it and that's why I would go with it

Yes, and it pains me to have to admit it. The right side of thr track pad gets really hot. This is stricky a Indie device in my opinion or if you want to run more powerful games, you can tweak the settings and run it at 720p at 15w to keep it under control. However, that kinda defeats the purpose. Most people who own them won't admit this but I will. It's really hot to hold when you push the power limits.
"if I can only have one device what would that be" none of them😂 1-Until there's no in it at the very least RTX 3050 - they are useless for games. 2-If you "take them for work", they are again useless because - I refuse to work on that screen size.(type any text longer than 15 minutes) p.s 3-in the same way - in many eastern european countries(like Bulgaria, Spain, Romania...) is a very expensive! price! for such a garbage pc configure.
Hey man, I think this is a fair statement if that's how you feel. I think all of these devices are overpriced and quite frankly, I wish they would move the technology forward at a faster pace than they do.

I have and prefer the GPD Win 4.
Nice, I never tried that one. I might go for the 4 when then new ones comes out
How do you find mouse control on the nub? Any good?
@@PPX14 I personally prefer it over a lot of things. Even some laptop track pads are worse than the nub. But it has a touch screen too anyway, so you can also just poke the screen to click on stuff real quick.
Do you mean the joystick mouse controls? If so, it's awesome. Was using it last night and thought to myself how flawlessly it worked. The regular trackpad works well too.
great vid!
Thanks, and I appreciate you taking the time to watch
2 of the greats!
Awesome comparison 👍🏾
Thank bro! I appreciate it!
@@Slyclientthetechdadnow I don’t have to do a comparison 🫡😅
Thanks
@@BarelyAverageDude No no dude, lol I love your style man. It's very unique. If you ever did it, id watch for sure. :)
Excellent video. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much. I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
i just hit subscribe. i've been considering win mini but due to price initially i opted for mini 2023 7640U which only available currently but i was concerned with heat issue. then i shifted to mini 2024 8840U but still unsure whether heat issue still persists or not.
i plan to use mainly fo gaming (FF14 dawntrail to be specific). with steamdeck LCD i only get 40ish fps mostly with lowest setting, otherwise the CPU temps would go higher than 75C.
3 questions:
Is it safe to use in terms of security ?
Thank you for the reply. I am looking into wm2
@@Slyclientthetechdad hey thank you i appreciate your help
What program or application can be used to make the keyboard backlight always off?
@saamoore20saamoore20 I have yet to find anything that would solve that unfortunately
I’m still having a hard time deciding what’s best for me. If I use it connected to a wall charger most of the time, which should I go with?
If connected to a wall charger most of the time, I would get the one with the bigger screen. The device would probably be hot so I would use and external controller with it.
I’m heading off too college this August, I was considering the gpd win max 2. I’m having a hard time decking on whether I should get an iPad and steam deck oled or just the gpd win max 2.
The steam deck would be a better companion for you if you only intend to game. But the Max 2 will do it all for you. Hefty price tag but worth it if you can do it. You'll get more use out of it and that's why I would go with it
@@Slyclientthetechdad i got an offer for 800 for the 7840u model. I've talked to some people in the community their saying new one will come out with better processor this year. Now im considering maybe to just get an ipad and save up until that comes out.
@shazzi1626 now that you mention that, you should probably just wait. Wait for the new Ryzen chips to come out later this year. Need hearing some good stuff about them. If your able to be just a little patient, it will pay off in the long run. Im already sick of these 7840u and 8840u processors. So many of them out there right now and not much differe ce in performance
Win max 2 2023 or 2024 model is fantastic for productivity and some gaming. Can pair with an external monitor, eGPU, external controller
@@EzaneeGiresyup that's where it shines the most
If the sticks were both centered as in in the middle on the win max 2, i think i wouldve gotten it instead of the win mini
@@visionary4787 You still can't go wrong with the mini. It's amazing!
@@Slyclientthetechdad i seen u post this on the gpdwin reddit page 30 minutes ago lool nicee
I actually like the positions for the Mini, i'd want them on the WM2 predecessor. But having symmetrical will work for me eitherway.
@jennyrosedeleon2557 Agreed! The layout of the Mini is really unmatched. Everything about it is so comfortable. Cheers and thanks for watching. @jennyrosedeleon2557
@@jennyrosedeleon2557 sorry i think i misspoke i actually meant i like how they are symmetrical on the win mini haha idk why i said centered. But yes i totally agree
I think the win mini is a good choice if your game sessions are 1 hour or less
Indeed! It's really awesome!
Im bothered the win max 2 has a larger resolution and is only 60hz. The mini is native 1080p wrih a 120hz refesh rate
Thx🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
How to set tdp 15 watt gpd win mini sir
You can set the Tdp using Motion Assistant. The Gpd Mini comes with this software. You can also use Auto TDP but you would need to download it. Thanks for watching. I hope this helps.
Спасибо
How long does battery last max 2 regular computer use and let’s say watching a movie
Does GPD Win Max also get hot?
It's doesn't. It's gets warm but is very reasonable even at the higher TDP's
@@Slyclientthetechdad I see. Thanks for the info!
Is the win mini REALLY that hot that it’s unusable sometimes
Yes, and it pains me to have to admit it. The right side of thr track pad gets really hot. This is stricky a Indie device in my opinion or if you want to run more powerful games, you can tweak the settings and run it at 720p at 15w to keep it under control. However, that kinda defeats the purpose. Most people who own them won't admit this but I will. It's really hot to hold when you push the power limits.
"if I can only have one device what would that be"
none of them😂
1-Until there's no in it at the very least RTX 3050 - they are useless for games.
2-If you "take them for work", they are again useless because - I refuse to work on that screen size.(type any text longer than 15 minutes)
p.s
3-in the same way - in many eastern european countries(like Bulgaria, Spain, Romania...) is a very expensive! price! for such a garbage pc configure.
Hey man, I think this is a fair statement if that's how you feel. I think all of these devices are overpriced and quite frankly, I wish they would move the technology forward at a faster pace than they do.
