If you need to take it with you in a backpack, a device like this makes sense. But for a permanent setup on your desk at home, a big eGPU enclosure and desktop GPU will cost about the same and be much faster.

Can you please make a video on the most color accurate displays in a laptop? Like a pick for every price range and some overall best regardless of the price? That would be super useful ❤

I'm still waiting for Thunderbolt 5...
At the moment we have only one laptop with it and it's a gaming machine, top GPU included. I hope in 2025 there will be more options.

I've been toying with external GPUs for many years through various DIY efforts; cut-down mobo expansion cards, riser cable extensions, total hack together 'for science!' doo-dads, all the way up to 5x-in-1 render boxes for farming. Outside of some one-off stellar accidents, the throughput on anything outside of workstation-grade mobos or server racks have been a bit disappointing. Thunderbolt 4/USB-C will Finally allow at least a remote option that's not totally dog poo for performance, though that is said for production use/GPU-accelerated tasks and not necessarily for gaming. Naturally a native option is still the best option, but for speedy productivity on the go, remote options are viable.

Needs dual independent tb5 to be game changing.
A full 50gbit for GPU and a separate 50gbit for ports ssds etc.

It's seems to be more like €600 from resellers in Europe though. I just bought one used for about €350. It kinda compares to a 3050 desktop which is like €200. So €600 doesn't seem that outrageous if an egpu is what fits your requirements.

I am going to build a new PC and looking to buy components during black Friday. What CPU would you recommend to go with an RX 6800 XT for budget build as well as a Recommended build for gaming, streaming with OBS/SLOBS and video editing with Davinci Resolve? I have a friend that is going to sell me his RX 6800 XT at a really good price and want to get a CPU to not bottleneck for my needs which is a little more than just gaming. Thanks in advance!

The GPD G1 does not give you 100w via Thunderbolt, I would advise powering the laptop from a PSU.
I use mine with an Asus Zenbook Flip. Means I can play all my games on the move. Is not worth the cost for static setups as there are cheaper eGPU solutions for that with a full card.
I also use Lossless Scaling which will run on the iGPU if you are watching on laptop display, this mans I can play Cyberpunk, Starfield etc.. okay

You can get the 7600xt 16gb for like 300 dollars. Add a power supply and a dock for another 400 max. Why would someone possibly buy this 8gb card for over 1000 dollars? I mean other than it just being enclosed like this, which is fine but not worth anywhere close to that cost. Wow.

For Thunderbolt it will work with AMD 7000 series and newer out of the box. With AMD 6000 it depends on the manufacturer to release firmware which supports Thunderbolt. It won’t work with AMD 5000 and older as they don’t have any Thunderbolt support.
For Oculink it will work with any machine that has the appropriate connector. That includes AMD 5000 or older systems if you use a PCIe-to-Oculink adapter.
Ocuilnk still loses some performance compared to the XG Mobile port used by Asus on their Flow laptops (which 8 lanes rather than 4) but the latter’s proprietary. Mind you, a Flow paired with the 3080 mobile can be had for about the same price on eBay as either the GPD G1 or the OneXGPU and delivers consistently better frame rates as well as having 16GB for compute tasks.
Overall though none of these are great options unless a) portability matters, or b) you have space constraints at home. The combo of a decent mini-ITX system and a good-enough sub-note or thin-and-light will probably cost about the same and cover similar use cases.

I have seen videos of it working with a legion go that has an amd z1. It does run usb4 but I'm pretty confused about usb4 and Thunderbolt 3 and all the compatibility specs. But it sure as day can run on amd in some circumstances.

    • @EleanorMcHugh
      @EleanorMcHugh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@vipuljain5683 yes, so long as your eGPU connects over USB4. A Thunderbolt 3 connection will also probably work although as @jonatanrullman mentions the specifications aren't quite the same and it's in principle possible for a manufacturer to implement USB4 so that it doesn't support TB3.
I've successfully tested the OneXGPU with both the R7 7840u and two different USB4 R7 6800u systems over USB4, as well as a Razer Chroma X.

Mac Mac Macs.... real life application in gen ai is only existing in photography.... and advertising agency assigning gigs for ai images... not cartoon stuff or hyper realistic ai, only in 100% photos gen ai.... now comes the kicker, absolutely not one single advertising agency art director or creative director "soul" on this planet working in advertising works on a PC. Not One single one .... everyone works on macs.... if you were to produce a tutorial for EGpus for mac laptops where an rtx4090 could be used with a mac laptop , you suddenly would garner another huge massive crowd...and soon an ad agency would approach you with a serious budget to do something for them.... these are much more serious revenues than TH-cam here.... just some Food for Thought ...

      running Ollama 3 plus a few added libraries on a 12900K, 128GB DDR5 6400, 4 x 4TB gen4 NVMe and finally with a trio of Quattro P4000 GPUs.
it does a LOT more than just image generation.
My main work system is an iMac Pro as well as a MacBook Pro, some iPads and a few Mac Minis I use for server work.
I would love to see more Mac info but the system needed for effective AI on the Mac M platform requires more investment than the "average" creator wants to spend. The older Intel Macs with Radeon graphics already work with older Thunderbolt eGPUs based on the AMD cards but drivers are hard to find and applications may not like it.
