My name is Rod Jones. I'm a 5th generation farmer and KC-135 pilot in the Ohio Air National Guard.
I was Active Duty Air Force for 16 years and have been with the Ohio Air National Guard for 4 years.

Wow! 30 years is a long time! I've been in for almost 20, but sometimes it feels like 30!
@@ohioflyingfarmer7050 I was a cold warrior on submarines and earned a commission as a Physician Assistant PA and did 17 of my 30 years with the Martin’s corps in the field. I would love to have been a pilot, but I was a grunt medic.

When I was a kid all I wanted to do was be a pilot but unfortunately astigmatism prevented that. I instead had a career in running heavy equipment and had a very satisfying career.

Thanks Gary! Yeah, the military can be pretty picky when it comes to physical qualifications for pilots. Weird thing is, once you get in and they spend the money training you, there are very few things that are disqualifying.

I miss those houses with the big porches…. I am from Dayton. My dads sister had a farm in the area close to your farm. I remember going there at summer time. We ate the best lima beans, corn and tomatoes I have ever tasted…Moved to the Pacific Northwest a few years ago when Dad retired from the Ohio State Patrol. Really enjoy your videos..kinda like being back home in Ohio…from one service member to another..thank you for your service. New subscriber.

Brain recommended your channel, glad I stopped by! Farmin and flyin, great combo. The ole 135 is getting long in the tooth for sure. But she’s still goin! I see them at different bases all of the time. Contractor based out of the 45th space wing, but I travel all over. My favorite, just because it’s busy is The Rock.
I’m a Texas boy, my family grows cotton, peanuts and alfalfa. We have cow calf and run yearlings on wheat on the gain.
I've spent some time in Texas. Went to navigator training in San Antonio, then later pilot training at "Del Rio By the Sea."

I drove truck with Abbott Labs so I'd be hauling ensure from Columbus down Alta Vista Virginia and I remember driving through your neighborhood quite a few times. I would run 35 there into West by God Virginia down to Huracan and then head on over to Charleston and South

Great hearing about your flying career. Keep it up. I was an aircrew plane captain in the navy. We flew COD C2A planes hauling jet engines and other types of cargo to the carriers off the coast of Vietnam in late 60s. Hope you have a good harvest I am an old farm boy harvesting for 65 years. This is my first harvest I've not participated in in 51 years.

Joe, I was an A-6 Intruder plane captain in VA-42, NAS Oceana, Va. Beach,Va. from 1973 to Aug. 15, 1975. I got the opportunity to get cat shot off an aircraft carrier in a C-1 Trader (COD) after our squadron finished a carrier qual. That was a real thrill. I was also flown off carriers in a CH-46 and a Huey after carrier quals. Took a ride in a TC-4C down inside the Great Cannon too. All great experiences. I was at San Diego for boot camp starting on Oct. 18, 1971. We also went on detachments to NAAS Fallon, Nv. & The Marine air base at Yuma, Az. for pilot bombing training too. GO US Navy !

Is you and your brothers boys going to continue farming and going to school for something in the agricultural field? I agree with you that these days farming beef cattle is a little more work than dairy. They both have their hard parts but beef is a lot less maintenance than dairy.
I'm not sure what the boys' plans are. Hopefully they continue farming, but that's not something I'd ever force on anyone!

I spent my late 1960's and early 70's in Ohio and am a OSU alumni living in South Carolina. During those years I use to spend time rabbit and pheasant hunting in and around the Chillicothe area. This is curiosity question only! Is your farm(s) close to Chillicothe,as I know that area use to be a great farming and hunting area.
Hey Mark! Our farm is just east of Chillicothe by about two miles.
We don't see too many pheasants anymore. I think the hawks wipes them out!
Hi my friend, now I also understand what you meant by your piece of land what you call island, after this video of you I watched the last one from Bryan Brown... He happened to drive just behind your land where you are working with your Case combine and then Bryan mentioned your TH-cam channel and your name and said you were neighbors...
Since the Brown family also has a lot of flooding, does this have to do with each other, with your island and with their land...

I'd imagine when we get flooded, so do they.

I’m dating myself but I was in when those planes were relatively new. I read somewhere new tankers were in the works? Also, I watch a lot of farming videos and a good portion also raise cattle. It does look like a lot of work.
Yes, there is a new tanker coming into service.
It's called a KC-46 Pegasus. Biggest difference is that instead having a boom operator in the back, the boom operator now sits up front behind the pilots and relies on cameras to conduct the refueling operations.

Interesting video. I grew up farming on both sides of the Scioto near White Sulfur, north of Columbus. I've been farming for 40 years in central Indiana. How far south are you? That river has quite a few islands along the way though I never heard of one as big as 47 acres. Thank you for your service.

We are about 50 minutes south of Columbus.
Is the pasture and hay ground low or only good for hay.
Most of our pasture is hilly terrain.
There are patches where we could possibly raise row crops, but most of it is just too hilly for equipment.
Was that a can of snooce (snus) sitting on the passengers seat of that grain truck ?

Have you had the opportunity to fly other aircraft during your career? I know caring for any livestock during the winter is horrible.
I started out as a navigator on C-130s. Did that for a year, then went to pilot training. We used the T-6 and T-1 as trainers, then been flying the KC-135 ever since.
@@ohioflyingfarmer7050 thanks for the fast response. I was just curious if pilots were moved around to different aircraft throughout their careers.
Definitely got to be a pilot rather than a doctor or vet as your writing is way too neat...
I've always had fairly neat handwriting for some reason. Definitely didn't get that trait from my dad though!
