Tommy, By the time you go to test drive the new Land Cruiser, we expect you to be fluent in Japanese thus eliminating the need for a translator. 😉 I am a bit surprised you did not ask about the choice of tailgate. Like most serious off road SUVs, the old Prado/GX design had the option of a tailgate mounted spare. When chosen this allowed increased fuel capacity of nearly FORTY gallons! I imagine the engineers really struggled with the decision to drop this feature. 🤔

Great interview, wonderfully engaged translator. Interesting and informative. I am still a bit concerned about fuel economy. Did you get a sense of when the hybrid is coming and what that will "cost " in terms of towing performance.

This is why american auto companies can't compete with Japan they think of everything before they put it into production, not saying they don't break but they do stand behind what they build.

Very well put questions for the interview. It’s not every day someone gets to interview Koji Tsukasaki, his insight clears a lot of fog on the “why’s” and “how’s” of these trucks designs/functions.

First of all, great interview....very detailed. You covered all the bases. And that interpreter is pretty high level. He is probably a permanent Toyota corporate fixture. With all of the tech speak that he has to process from the Chief Engineer, he could probably answer most of your questions by himself.
Great vid. Lots of take aways for sure. Glad to hear him say the GX550 and the LC250 is fundamentally the same except for front and rear overhangs and some cross members.
Great interview! I love how he mentions every other off-road Toyota product is a reference, while the GX (Prado) is the real thing, the pure off-roader.

Been to Japan a couple times myself & not understand the dialect myself, it's impressive to see yoy.had forethought in your questions despite the engineers answers. Tommy! big time interview my man, cool as a cucumber. Also I don't think I've been this excited about a new car since the Grenadier was announced. I feel like Ineos sparked something in the industry - Toyota / Lexus in particular is coming out with some really pure vehicles that go back to their roots. Making the new land cruiser the way it is (more rugged and affordable) is downright refreshing to me. I came dangerously close to buying a grenadier, and I still might have one in my future. But this new GX has me drooling. Thanks for the content!

Excellent interview Tommy! I was very interested to hear everything about the new GX for the chief engineer. You asked the best questions too. Lots of them are what I would’ve asked him too. Especially about the big change in powertrain. He did amazing on the design. I love how this new GX looks. I personally think the interior is a little too bland for me but the exterior design makes up for some of it. Great interview!

Great interview. I do wish however you would have asked him the reasons why they chose not to offer a 3 row option in the Overtrail trims, and if they might offer that option in the future.

I’ve been driving Toyota vehicles starting back to the day I received my drivers license. Today I owe 3 toyota vehicles. So now I’m struggling between the new 2024 toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus GX 550 . Both are dream vehicles!

Tommy, yes it’s the same engine as my former 2018 LS500 F-Sport 6 cylinder turbo. The engineer responded with LX info.
The only thing I ain't diggin' with the new GX are the colors. WIsh Lexus would give us some more bright and vibrant ones instead of these earth tones. I guess I'll have to suffice with a black or silver one.
Absolutely!! We should have at least a dozen paint options. Even 12 is a low figure compared to historical standards.

Never been a huge Toyota/Lexus fan. Being a long time Mechanic, I always respected the reliability. Just not the curb appeal. This has changed significantly. The wife and I will have a Overtrail Plus in Incognito 🎉
Good looking vehicle
The hype for this vehicle has been high. The delivery times are going to be even higher - according to my local dealer (9-12 months for the Overtrail).
I’m glad that the Japanese are behind the engineering of this absolute beast! I don’t trust anyone else to make a more reliable vehicle.
Really nice interview. I would have loved to hear the reasoning behind only keeping ONE true off roader GX 550 in the Overtrail. Certainly the Premium and luxury trims do NOT seem to be true off roaders. Another question would be why the only one with KDSS is the Overtrail trim, additionally why did they just cut and paste the center stacks, I guess to save even more money? The engineer stated that fuel economy was part of the redesign, really 1 mile difference between GX 460 and GX 550? The exterior is an absolute killer design, I don't know how you can possibly improve on that!!! I also would have loved to hear why no 3rd row in the Overtrail, that makes it an absolute no go for many people.
The no 3rd row option makes me scratch my head too?? Why not offer it for people who want it?

any update on all the toyota/lexus 3.4 that are dying on crank bearing?
I wish you would have asked about after market front and read bumpers - specifically, how will you add a winch and tire carrier without remove sensors or voiding warranty. Also, along the same lines, he mentioned that the suspension/air bags were removed to allow customers to customize their suspension more, but does this void warranty? Does doing any modifications void warranty?? Haha..
They better have a good supply of windscreens, steep angled windscreens are more prone to cracks from stones etc.
bought a 2023 GX 460 yesterday and not looking back. Twin Turbo V6, you can keep it.
