The turbo engines I could get over if it weren’t for the low rent interiors. What I was thinking while driving that GX is, even if it had the 4.6L V8, I still wouldn’t buy it solely based on the awful interior.
I get why they had to in Toyato for emission and government reason, they should have kept V8 in the Lexus trucks to differentiate better between brand and should have been minimal penalty since less production.
I purchased the lexus gx 460 2023 with your recommendation. I'm so happy with this purchase and I look forward to many years of enjoying it with myself and son. Thank you being so informative Josh! I get what you're saying about the quality and technical issues you mention.
Fantastic!! I’m so glad you got one while you could and that it’s serving you well. Take care of it and it could very well outlive your son and his kids! 😂
@Justintm I have an Infiniti QX60 in the driveway for review that I really don’t want to give back. That (or the MDX) is where I’d go to replace an RX, but not so sure about replacing a GX460.
Likewise, thank you @joshjamescars! Your videos and reviews (as well as those of @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD) prompted the purchase of my 2023 GX, and I am just smitten with this beauty (and its inner beast)!
GREAT video. I work in sales for this brand and you’re spot on about the changing demographic. I’m all for Lexus making an off roader but I can tell you from what I’ve seen of 550 sales, the buyers are very different. GXs used to be sold in cash to people who knew exactly what they would cost. Almost every new 550 buyer has traded in some non-luxury SUV or truck that we have to send to auction, can’t give them top dollar on, and they’re being leased or financed at astronomical monthlys and long loan terms. That historically is not the Lexus customer and is not the customer who’s going to come back to Lexus for their next car.
What a great comment, thanks for sharing your insight! I was wondering about that because I was running some hypothetical numbers on a GX and at the price they’re charging and the high-ish interest rates we have right now, it’s insane even with a good amount down. Even with half down, you’re still financing over $40K. I’m not surprised, though. As they say, there’s one born every minute! I do hope that it is selling well for you all and helping you all make it a good year!
Interesting info. I would think though that a lot of that has to do though with car prices being so insane now, and Lexus marketing to off road or camping users for some reason nowadays. Lexus is marketing their GX's to the hipster offroad crowd, same as the Bronco, Jeep and 4Runner. They're younger than the all cash true luxury car crowd. Lexus isn't the true UPSCALE brand that they used to be. I'm not really sure why they got away from that honestly. The new Toyota trucks are the same price as a damn Lexus and you can sell those to the offroad crowd. So I'm super confused about where Lexus is trying to go as a brand.
The true Lexus owner is going to buy the luxury plus. Luxury plus should be more on par with the 2023 luxury. Give them a year or 2 to dial it in and the 550 will be exceptional
My father in law was ready to write a check for a $110,000 Lincoln Navigator last year. They actually declined him because they wanted to make their 2-3% cut on interest. So when you say that new customers aren’t cash buyers, how sure are you that your bosses aren’t pushing for financing?
And to top it off they’re recalling the twin turbo v6’s and saying it’s due to a “debris” issue where debris remained in the engine post production (interesting that the debris made it into the engine in multiple global locations where it is manufactured) yet we know at this point it’s due to bearing issue which is a much deeper concern and now I wonder if Toyota/Lexus will replace all of the engines in all of the Tundra’s, Sequoia’s, GX’s, etc which would cost them billions to do according to estimates from experts. Time will tell. Disappointing to see Toyota/Lexus essentially killing off their brands with their decidedly cheap, chintzy plastic fantastic approach to design, engineering and manufacturing.
Thanks for the video - the folks who are most excited about this vehicle are the ones who don't own the GX460 - they have not experienced the overall refinement of that vehicle, including the surefooted handling, even in inclement weather, and the interior build quality and materials. Its also very quiet even at speed, something you really appreciate over time.
@CeeJay591 Could not agree more. I also don’t think the demographic who’s buying them cares about all the things that you mention above that we care about.
@@joshjamescars Thanks for responding! :) So, the real question is who will buy the non-overtrail trims? I can’t see the Bronco/Wrangler/4runner crew buying a Luxury+
@CeeJay591 I know! People who care about appearances, care only about the badge, and what it says about them to others, I think. Sadly, there are a lot of them out there, to George’s point.
@@joshjamescars We’ll see - the real kicker is the price increases across the board - looking at the recent market trends for the new Tundra and now the Tacoma Toyota might have some issues in moving these vehicles at these prices
Really good review. At first I thought you might be a "company man" type that would hide vehicle deficiencies, but no, you were honest and upfront. Really appreciate that!
My Lexus dealership gave me this book when I picked up my wife’s new lx600 the other day. I’ve got the gx460 from 2022, and am not planning on trading it for the gx550. Glad to hear your validation of this plan. The lx interior is top notch, btw.
Very cool! Im so glad they still have them there… they ought to give LEXUS CORPORATE a copy of it too since they seem to have forgotten what they’re supposed to be doing.
The tx is best of the new redesigned Lexus it’s a nice big roomy suv it drives well but would not call it a luxury car buts it perfectly good slightly higher end grand highlander it definitely a bit nicer then the high end telluride or palisade and i think it be their best seller
I love this video!!! Great job, giving an actual opinion, not just regurgitating back what Lexus says, which is unfortunately the reality of most “reviews.”
I understand why Lexus made KDSS standard on the overtrail since it provides maximum wheel articulation, which is needed when off-road, but they should have had it available as an option on the other trims.
I agree. I actually think it should be optional on all trims. It’s a bitch to take it out if you want to modify the suspension, though, which is why I thought it made sense that it wasn’t on the 4R TRD Pro.
Even if you had $100,000 to spend, you can’t really buy a nice Lexus anymore, and that’s sad. Maybe the LC500, but how many years do we have left of the V8?
I hope the folks at Lexus see this video, especially the beginning where the book is discussed and what they maybe “used” to pursue. I’ve been waiting to see what the new GX would bring, as I’ve been contemplating getting rid of my 958 GTS. Think I’ll keep it for now. I did find 3 new GX460s in Richmond, VA..at least listed on the web. Maybe I’ll check if they are still available and consider that.
Aw man… a GX and that Cayenne would be my perfect set, but the GX460 is terrific as well so I can understand wanting to replace it. I would absolutely buy a GX ASAP if you want one, though. I suspect once people start driving the 550, 460 resale will get more expensive.
Oh man, sad to hear that the vibration is actually a common thing. If you haven’t read about the V35A recall and issues it sounds like that vibration may be coming from the engine. Which is NOT something I’d want ever want to buy into.
the silliest joy I get from the GX460 is trashing it offroad then returning to pavement minutes later feeling like I'm in a early 90s Lincoln Towncar. I have to look at the car to convince myself it's the same car. The refinement of KDSS is amazing, along with the now missing lux in this GX550. No e-kdss and 3rd row option is unforgivable. Feels like Lexus of Japan gave too much power to their American arm. Kinda like the downfall of SEGA back in the day. Thank you for the excellent comparison. Our 22 Sienna has that same fake plastic wood. lol...
I'm actually glad the GX550 has turned out the way it is. I feel zero buyers remorse and zero urge to upgrade from my 4RL AWD blizzard white, and I have zero urge to keep up with Jones's despite living in a town where people complain about their house keepers or the pick-up line at the local private school. I'll just keep spraying fluid film under it every year while I'm working and getting a rental vehicle for family trips or any trip over 600-800 miles.
Disappointing to see the elimination of E-KDSS across a majority of trim levels likely as a cost reduction measure. Can the body roll issues be combatted by a large diameter aftermarket sway bar?
It might be, but that could also compromise capability off road if the car is locked into a more rigid position (which might be fine for people who never intend to leave the pavement).
Great review. I was recently choosing between a new GX 550, and a 2022/2023 GX 460. My previous SUV was an Audi Q7, and it had horrible reliability. Previous to the Audi, we had a Toyota Sienna that was great, so I thought the GX would be a good choice. My wife and I test drove both the 550, 460 as well as the 4-Runner. We liked the ride and comfort of the 460 best, so we found a 2022 GX 460 that has been amazing. I also like the peace of mind of the V8.
Hi Josh! Oh no, what has Lexus done? I was not aware of a Lexus book, considering having 3 in my household and one is 2005 no one in the showroom ever mentioned there was one available. In regard to the quality of the GX550 I’m not surprised at the lack of luxury creature features. I’m quite sure Toyota/Lexus is not the only manufacturer that has cut quality. After going to an auto show last year there was nothing that stood out like oh my I’ve got to have it. The only thing that was noticeable was how many screens some had on the dash board. One was the Grand Wagoneer . How many dashboard screens do you need? We had a Tacoma as a rental for about two weeks and it was straight up bouncy and was like something from the 1960’s in the ride quality. At any rate, thank you for taking the time to review this vehicle. I hope there are not recall issues based on the flaws you mentioned. Have a great weekend.
The book was a special gift that some dealers would would gift to their customers, so I don’t think it was ever available to buy. Someone said they just got one from their dealer last week, though! So sounds like it may still be around. It’s a great read if you can find one. Also, I completely agree. I will say, as I write this there’s an Infiniti QX60 in my driveway that has BLOWN ME AWAY, and a new QX80 is coming though it’s much larger and way more expensive, of course. Hope you have a wonderful weekend as well! Cheers!
Josh, you provide the absolute best critiques and thoughtful Lexus observations I have ever come across. I had a 2019 4Runner and now have a 2023 GX. I’m so glad I got the ‘23, thanks in part to your insightful commentaries which bring to light subtle product nuances that are apparent after extended use but not always on first blush.
Hey, Stephen! Thank you for always watching and for the kind words! I do remember you getting the GX, and I’m so glad I was able to play a part in your new GX and glad you got one while you could!
@lozada1971 Absolutely, me too. I traded in the same year and model 4 runner as you for a 2023 GX460 w/the premium plus package. Josh knows, the best decision I made, no regrets.
I just test drove a GX550 and completely agree with him. I really wanted to like it but the interior is basically the 2024 FourRunner , just a little nicer. I took the Overtrail for a test drive and it handled just what he said, shakes and makes noise, transmission clearly not timed correctly. For 85k take home , this is an awful value. I am sure enough people will buy it but it clearly not what we all expected .
Hello! Same here at really wanting to like it… I’m also disappointed to hear that the Overtrail didn’t drive any better. That was my hope since that one does have eKDSS. I completely agree that for $85K it’s a terrible value. And others have told me that the ride of the Luxury trims are ruined by the 22” wheels and lack of eKDSS too. As well, I just had the new Land Cruiser in for review and though I didn’t feel as much body roll, the turbo-hybrid I4 drivetrain was even worse than the GX, so it seems none of these are great options.
I am so so sad that I sold my GX460. The leather and materials in that car were just spot on and like you said, made you feel like you're driving something special. I remember getting in it for the first time, that leather was so soft. I'm between cars right now and have a GX550 arriving in a couple of weeks and no longer even want to take delivery. It's a sad time to be shopping. Might just go pick up a 22 or 23 GX and put my head in the sand for the next 20 years.
I love, love, love the LX570. I went with the 460 just because I don’t need that much space but if I did, I’d 100% have the LX too! Keep it forever! The new LX600 is great but the engine is nowhere near as reliable as the V8.
Josh; your authenticity and honesty will set you apart from other reviewers who are in it to get sponsored from big corps. Ironically, your videos are like old Lexus-good quality and integrity. Keep it up!
Thank you so much! Like you say, I’m not in it for that. This TH-cam channel is just a fun side hobby for me and I’ve always wanted it to just be me experiencing the cars like any normal customer would!
YES! People tell me all the time any nice, low mileage V6 RX350 is going for a very pretty penny. I’m sure your ES will be the same way whenever the next ES comes out.
Josh, thanks for the extensive review. Was considering a new GX 550 (I have a 2017 - GX 460) given the new design and new tech. Staying with my vehicle as I do love it. Appreciate it, as you re-affirmed what I was concluding given the current RX new design. Have a great summer!
Thank you for watching, glad it helped you make a decision! And yes, could not agree more with the old vs new RX. Probably the biggest disappointment of the past few years for me as the old V6 RX was in my top five favorite vehicles and always a recommendation, but not anymore. I’d definitely keep your 2017 or if you do need a new car, maybe finding an almost new 2023 GX460.
I was only interested in a new model GX for the improvements in tech and Apple car play which the new models have. Might have a new head unit installed to have that. Thanks for the recs. I LOVE MY WOOD STEERING WHEEL TOO! Like Savage Geese (auto TH-camr said - your Lexus GX will outlast you! For people who have had all the cars already and want something luxurious and absolutely reliable and will not break.
You can get CarPlay in the 2022-23 GX460 too! That was one reason I held off on buying until 2023 so that I could get the new screen and it had a year of time to mature. IMO the 23 is probably the best year to buy. Even the upgrades made in 2020 and 2022 have been fully worked out and we still got the V8.
I have owned a Lexus since they began. I’ve owned a ls400, rx350, lx470, and lastly a gx460. I had money down and was waiting for the new gx550. The more I read about the new overhaul the more I became disappointed. I cancelled my order and switched to a Genesis gv80. I’m so happy I did. It is the luxury I was used to with a Lexus. Lexus is nothing more that an average truck and a cheaper car. Took all the luxury out and charging a stupid amount of money for plastics. My Genesis is fantastic. Glad I made the switch.
Good for you!! Whenever I do decide to get something else, I will absolutely be going elsewhere. I just had the Infiniti QX60 in for review and for less than an RX or GX, it has a MUCH nicer interior plus the classic naturally aspirated V6 feel I loved so much with older Lexus cars.
Thank you for pointing out what I observed through all the other TH-cam reviewers. The interior is a step down compared to the GX460, yet no one was brave enough to point it out. Also, thank you for your detailed insight as a previous-gen GX owner.
The unfortunate reality is any TH-camr who does this for a living (not me) has to keep the automakers happy with their content or risk not being invited to events and given product. So most reviews out there today shy away from any substantial critique. This is a fun side hobby for me so I’m fortunate to not have to worry about that.
Hey Josh - you're the outlier according to fanboys. Lexus GX550 interior is classy and still luxurious but they're fanboys who can't see the interior looks cheap for a $90k CAD vehicle... :( Agreed disappointed in the lack of wood, plastic leather and mostly black interior... Looks not much better than a Land Cruiser (itself very expensive) around $60-70k CAD...
I am, but I think one of the market problems Toyota has today is most Toyota fanboys are overlanders, off-roaders, and not luxury buyers. So they listen to them wax on about how macho and capable and departure angles are the most important thing in a new SUV and not folks like us who want luxury and comfort and refinement. Also, having driven this GX I probably would put my money on the Land Cruiser. It’s still expensive AF but not as bad as this and even though the hybrid max is slow, it might not have the same transmission behavior I was seeing here.
I just bought a 21' gx 460 last week. The old infotainment doesn't bother me. Hardly use it in any car. Got it at a great price in great condition. Hope to have it for the next 20 years or more
So true, I drove my mom’s 2024 NX350h extensively this week, honestly I’m more than a little disappointed when the door panel rattles very noticeably driving on some rough pavement. On the same road my IS 350, which is still an old school Lexus, drive in absolute silence. Heck, even my Tacoma and 4Runner don’t rattle like that.
That’s exactly why I traded my NX350h after only 6 months! I thought okay a hybrid from Lexus will be rav4 efficiency with Lexus Refinement. Nope, not anymore.
Love that you referenced this book. I own that book and while I understand that things change but it does see like these new lexus vehicles have gotten away from the original mission.
Thank you! And yes, same here. I also just don’t understand why they felt they needed to put the Lexus badge on these. That comes with an expectation and frankly I’d rather have the Toyota and Land Cruiser badges on it anyway!
Toyota interior build quality has generally fallen in the past three years or so. While they've upped their game in design making the cars look more pleasing to look at from the outside, they seem to be cutting cost from interior materials.
Yes! Agreed, although I’ve been quite impressed with the interiors of Toyota-branded cars. Do they feel like my 4Runner? No, but do they feel as good as a Lexus that costs $20K more? Yes. 😂
Josh, as a noob on KDSS....have you documented or experienced the difference in highway driving with a 4Runner with and without KDSS? I know this is on a Lexus video, but since you mentioned how invaluable it is on body on frame type vehicles and my potential interest in the 5th gen 4Runner "old school" I wanted you to weigh in on that. Thank you!
Hello again! Old school hydraulic KDSS does make a big difference in the 4Runner with and without. It wasn’t exactly equal, but I owned my 4Runner TRD Pro which did not have KDSS and my GX which does at the same time for a few months and there was a pretty big difference. Obviously, the 4Runner was a totally different beast but this GX drives a lot like my 4Runner did with all the body roll and rocking and swaying. If you intend to drive your 4Runner on road even 50% of the time, I would definitely go for one with KDSS. OR, the Limited which has the XREAS suspension which also controls body movement since the limited is purely designed for on-road use.
@@joshjamescars Thanks for the tips. I've seen some frownie faces from Toyota mechanics on the complexity of these systems as it relates to maintenance but I totally trust my experience as a driver can benefit from it.
Yeah, KDSS can be a pain to fix (though old school hydraulic KDSS won’t have problems until way down the line), but the trade off of having the incredible on-road ride it provides is worth it to me.
Totally agree with your unbiased review, it's not the Lexus as before. More money, but with too many cheap plastics and worse quality control. Lexus should offer KDSS on all GXs.
Thank you for the honest review. I had noticed every reviewer was given a GX with KDSS or the adaptive suspension. The rest of the GX trims handle like trash on the road, explains why they held back on those. We had a reservation from June 2023 and after we drove the first premium+ GX that hit our dealer lot, we cancelled it.
This is new GX is what the new 4Runner should have been. That being said, I'm glad I went with a 2024 Limited to keep the NA V6 with bulletproof reliability. All of these twin turbo / Hybrid will never last as long. If I need a better infotainment system, there are like 20 different options I can pick for the 4R that don't require a subscription. Toyota/Lexus is forgetting it's roots and it's heartbreaking.
100% agree with “this is what the new 4Runner should have been” sentiment! And it’s not just longevity, some of these new V35A engines are having issues before they’ve even hit 50K.
I think you nailed it when you said that this GX is tailored more toward the people that are off-road-focused. A lot of your criticisms may actually be good for off-roading. A tan suede headliner will get filthy loading things in and out, camping, etc. Plastic is easier to clean and replace when they inevitably get scratched and dirty when camping, etc.
I 100% agree and that’s also why I feel like this has the wrong badge. All of my criticisms would also be more than acceptable in a mainline Toyota branded vehicle (which could come with pricing maybe $5-10K lower). Luxury off-roader has always been something of an oxymoron IMO.
I’d maybe shift your dreams over to the new Land Cruiser. It’s expensive but at $69K nicely optioned that’s $3K less than this GX Premium I drove. And I can cut the Toyota way more slack because it is actually a Toyota.
@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD My big hang up is that the GX has the Lexus badge which used to mean something but the Land Cruiser having cheap plastics is fine since it’s a mainline Toyota vehicle. The new Prius is one of my favorite cars, also has crap materials, but is fine since it’s a Toyota. 😂
@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Yes I plan to test drive one. But I saw one at the Minneapolis auto show and I was a bit disappointed. It feels like my nephew's 2023 Rav4.
I own a porsche cayenne gts with a v8 engine and a MB Gle 450 ,both fully loaded. The gx550 over-trail plus is an amazing car. I love it and its my daily driver now.
Im glad I got a 2022 GX460 Luxury with 8k miles.. without even knowing how disappointing the new GX550 was going to be. I understand that when it comes to preference its a matter of opinion, but when you have the facts lined up in front of you its impossible not to make an informed decision unless you are biased or paid to promote something that clearly is not up to par with Lexus traditional quality. I like your reviews, not only in this instance, but previous ones as well. Thanks for keeping us alert and informed
Thank you so much, I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed! And that’s fantastic that you got a Luxury when you did. And yes, exactly to preferences may differ but objectively this is not up to par for a luxury vehicle.
Very impressive review! Really appreciate the detail in terms of platform, transmission, etc. I haven't seen your content before but definitely gave you a sub!
Thank you! And welcome aboard! I’m just a random hobbyist TH-camr who enjoys making videos in my spare time away from my day job. This video happened to take off because so many people are interested in the 550.
I owned a TX 500h + Luxury. It was Terrible! I don’t like Lexus anymore. The body roll. The touch screen and NOT natural voice control. The MPG is Not as advertised. 👎🏻 The plastics, fit and finish. Nope! Soo expensive for a Terrible driving vehicle. Not luxury. Bring back the older Land Cruiser and how Lexus was made! I also test drove the Lexus GX Luxury. It was sooo not comfortable. Inside wasn’t luxury. Not even heated seats in the rear. I’m over all of these brands going downhill with quality and thinning out materials! Soo disappointing!
Oh the TX is a joke. They literally did the minimum amount possible to change a Grand Highlander. Also, yes you’re right the GX Luxury also comes with 22-inch wheels on which you literally feel every little imperfection in the road.
@@joshjamescars the overtrail plus is just as bad rides like a jeep and has so much wind noise and speakers vibrate no quality what so ever in the new gx the 460 was so much better if you want a gx buy a cpo 460
This is one of the best reviews I have seen and I have seen probably near a thousand. Thank you for being detailed and honest. I have seen a GX in person and was shocked at how cheap the interior was, not unattractive, just cheap. I see no reason to buy any of the versions of this platform, it I were to it would be the cheapest version of the land cruiser, at $58K the 1958 would make a little sense but that body roll rules that out altogether.
Thank you! And I agree 100%. I’ve also since driven the new Land Cruiser and the 1958’s interior is absolutely appalling for a $58K vehicle. Makes this GX look like a handcrafted Rolls Royce. And the new 2.4 turbo+hybrid engine in the Land Cruiser isn’t great either. Like you say, there’s no reason to buy any of the versions of this new Prado/250 platform.
@smirin7078 I have kept my 5 series for one decade with very few problems. Sure, Toyota products last longer, but charging BMW price for Toyota quality? Come on! Lexus is a step up from Toyota just like Audi is a step up from Volkswagen.
As a former BMW fanboy now Lexus GX460 owner, the X5 is one of the most polished vehicles sold today. And it’s beautiful to look at. For the same money the X5 wins. I’d predict if you are going to drive 150,000 miles or less the BMW won’t be any more expensive to operate.
I absolutely love the exterior of the GX550, I think it looks the best in its class. Don't really care that the V8 is gone given strict emissions regulations and that I'm stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic 95% of the time. But wow the interior is so sterile and cheap for a $100k base model car pushing up to $130k where I live. Some contrasting wood or suede panels and inserts would at least break it up and make it look nicer. The lack of KDSS is also a huge huge miss. Most people buying this where I live will use this as a mall crawler so comfort should be the most important thing.
These are exactly my thoughts! I honestly wouldn’t mind the new engine if the interior was as luxurious as the 460. And vice versa, I wouldn’t buy this even if it had a V8 simply because the interior is an insult to anyone spending $80K+
I look at what Mazda is doing with the CX 70 and CX 90 and would rather have the Turbo S Premium Plus for similar money to the RX with nicer interiors with the twin turbo inline 6.
Wow. I can’t believe Lexus went this route. I have a 2022 GX and love the refinement of it. I never once thought about getting the new one because I hate the design but definitely won’t even entertain it now.
Haha! I don’t mind the new design but I don’t think it looks very lexus. I definitely prefer the design of the 460 with its bright work and more refined lines.
So my partner has a 2024 NX350h. A family member has a brand new RAV4 Hybrid. In short, I TOTALLY agree with you… about everything. In my opinion the NX is a piece of crap. The materials are just mostly just ‘different’ to the RAV… not ‘better’. And im super fussy and take notice of all this stuff. And considering the NX is MUCH more expensive than the RAV, it’s an absolute joke. My partner was blinded by the Lexus badge, had no idea about cars, wanted nothing else, and wouldn’t listen to me about alternatives. My only question is… WHY? Why in the hell is this happening? Where are the funds being allocated to elsewhere????? It’s not like Toyota/Lexus are having to pay off billions in fines like Volkswagen are after Dieselgate, and hence cheapen their products. So have I missed something here?
Hahaha I love the “different not better” because it’s true. I also had a 2023 NX350h and as an appliance it was a great car, but as a luxury car it fell way short and I ended up flipping mine after only 6 months. It was during the chip shortage and car shortage days, so I got all my money back, but still… buying was the worst decision, selling was the best decision. Also, I think it’s Toyota trying to get every dollar out of its customers as possible to offset as much of their portfolio of the future as possible. They’re way behind in EVs and R&D to catch up is costing them a ton of money. So skimp on everything we can while charging more and it’ll net them a much larger profit per vehicle and ultimately mean less money out of their own coffers for R&D on their future EV portfolio.
It’s just so weird tho. It’s not like they’ve allocated funds to the Bz4x, as that’s a piece of crap as well. Like what is ACTUALLY going on here?????? My 2006 Honda Accord Euro (Acura TSX to you guys), has a nicer interior, nicer sounding door ‘thunk’, ZERO gloss black trim… and doesnt feel like it was built to a budget (even tho it obviously was). Just annoys the crap out of me. We have a 2006 Subaru Liberty (Legacy to you)… and that’s the same - proper, solid, well engineered cars. Im not a negative nelly… I just dont actually SEE where they’re re-allocating their funds to!!!!!
Proud owner of one of the "end of the line" 2023 GX 460s. Build date 12 OCT 23, an Eminent White Pearl over Sepia Premium Plus. I owned a 2019 4Runner SR5 prior to that, and your videos helped finalize my decision to sell my 4Runner and get the GX. I have zero regrets regarding the vehicle itself, although sometimes I wish I had gotten the bench seat in the 2nd row instead of captains chairs. The GX is so much better for families that will actually utilize the 3rd row (we have 4 young kids). The rear AC unit, the 3rd row AC vents and light, the greater headroom for the driver and more comfortable seats, the better ride, the V8/6AT vs. the V6/5AT, all make for a significantly better vehicle than the 4Runner, which I was initially very hesitant to get rid of. If Lexus gets the GX 550 "right" in the next 5 years or so, I may possibly consider trading in my 460. But from what I'm seeing right now, they have a long way to go before that's going to happen.
Amazing!! I’m so glad you were able to get one while you still could! And yes, the GX is great for all the reasons you mention there! I think as your kids get older, though, you may want to look at a Grand Highlander or TX. As much as I don’t care for the TX it is way, way more practical for families who need the additional space for more people and their things. The cargo room behind the third row in the TX, for example is much larger than the GX. Also definitely keep an eye on the new QX80. That would be the best upgrade path from your GX460 (which you should keep alongside if possible). Cheers!!
@@joshjamescars yeah, the TX is definitely on my radar. We're lucky in that the GX is our "second" car, not our primary family hauler. We have a Honda Odyssey for that, which is what my wife drives for all of her "soccer mom" duties. Since it's paid off she doesn't want to get rid of it, at least for the time being. But I'm already dropping hints that the TX would make a great upgrade over the Odyssey lol. I actually work at a dealership as a technician (not Lexus), the family that owns the dealership also sells Lexus and Infiniti, among other luxury brands, but not Toyota. (If you're in TX I'm sure you've heard of the dealership family; I'm in the DFW area.) So with our employee discount, the TX would actually be cheaper than the GH (or at least close enough in price that it's a no-brainer). I've never been much of a fan of Infiniti, so...meh. But that decision is probably 2-3 years down the road, so...who knows!
I thought so too - however, if you watch reviews of real owners with that trim you'll see a lot of deficiencies as well - no rear seat climate controls or high mounted vents, no optional 3rd row, etc. And, of course, its not inexpensive at all - with the 460 you got KDSS, Marl Levinson, etc at about 60k.
@CeeJay591 is right on all counts and actually, I was watching The Topher’s drive of the Overtrail and he actually said he didn’t notice a huge difference in the Overtrail with eKDSS versus the Premium which is just like what I drove here so… not sure if there’s even any benefit to that.
@@joshjamescars Well, E-KDSS is not the same as the old KDSS we know and love so who knows how Toyota/Lexus tuned that system. If indeed E-KDSS provides no on-road handling improvement we must assume that Toyota has decided to target a completely different audience with this new GX, leaving us current GX460 fans to look elsewhere, unfortunately.
I wonder if the type of gasoline that was in this GX had an effect on the harshness of the engine. Family member’s ES 350 v6 is sensitive to tier of fuel. Also, the way previous drivers drove this GX could have affected the transmission shifting. When I had a Volvo XC90 as a loaner, it took about 30 miles of driving conservatively over 2 days before the car settled down with shifting. At first I thought the loaner was broken. Lastly, I wonder what was the tire pressure in tires. This could have had an effect on road noise level in the cabin.
The GX requires premium so I’m sure that’s what the dealer had in it, and as for the rest it’s entirely possible but I doubt any of the above would make that big a difference to drastically improve the experience, at least for me.
Thank you for sharing your automotive journey and perspective on the new Lexus GX550. As a long-time car enthusiast with experience across various luxury brands (including Lexus), your insights are valuable. As you mentioned, the 2024 Lexus GX550 represents a significant departure from previous generations, addressing the brand's reputation for conservative. I believe this is going to be very good for Lexus moving forward. For instance, for the first time in 30 years my wife and I actually graced the front door of a Lexus dealership due to this new design. We did put our names on the waiting list for the new GX last December which was already extremely long. While the new GX may feel less luxurious in the traditional sense, I believe it offers a more engaging driving experience and versatility. This shift aligns with changing consumer preferences, particularly among younger luxury SUV buyers who prioritize performance and style alongside comfort. In my humble opinion, Lexus needs a younger demographic as their traditional buyers are aging out. We are looking forward to owning this new generation of Lexus.
Thanks for watching, and I definitely agree with you about the direction, but I want to be clear here, my issues aren’t with the design of the GX, but with the QUALITY of materials. Like had they used higher quality plastics and better quality leather but with the same overall design it would have been fine. But these materials are thinner and more brittle than an average Camry used to be. Next time you go and see a new Lexus, pull on the door cards and actually press on the plastic panels. There’s an appalling amount of give because the plastics are so thin. So I’m with you on the design direction of Lexus, it’s just that the quality of the materials is abysmal for the luxury class, regardless of design. Contrast the Lexus material quality with the materials in an Audi which is also very minimalist and there’s a huge difference.
@@joshjamescars Agree. We love the richness and quality of the interior of our Audi S5. Regarding the new Lexus GX550, there's a delicate balance to strike. While upgrading the interior could enhance its appeal, it might also push the price point beyond the reach of the younger, adventure-oriented demographic Lexus is targeting with this redesign. For those seeking a more traditional luxury experience with a higher level of interior refinement, Lexus offers the LX model. This strategy allows Lexus to cater to different market segments: the GX550 for those wanting a blend of ruggedness and luxury, and the LX for those prioritizing top-tier luxury in a large SUV format.
@Martine500 I agree but that’s where I’m confused about Toyota/Lexus’ strategy because the thing about the GX is that it’s supposed to be the upmarket version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. The same way the GX was always the upmarket version of the 4Runner. And since the Land Cruiser is significantly cheaper, IMO the “younger, adventure-oriented demographic” gets a much better value and bang for their buck with the Land Cruiser (the same way they always did with the 4Runner vs GX460). So now we have two budget-grade midsize off-roaders and no true luxury off-roader anymore. You could definitely get the LX but I can tell you for me and a lot of others who bought a GX460, the LX was just too large a vehicle for our needs and wants.
I can try to get my hands on an LX600 but they’re quite rare. As for new versus old, any Lx570 is going to be about 4 years old. If you’re asking because you own an LX570 and are thinking about an LX600 your best bet is to test drive an LX600 at a dealer so you can see and feel everything for yourself.
I don’t know if you said this in the video or I may have missed it. But I was wondering, if you are in the shoes of an inexperienced person driving both models, to what extent is the body roll noticeable compared to the 2023. Will someone test driving both be like “ Ugg it seems like the 2023 drive so much better” or “ umm it’s not that big of a deal, just a bit more roll”. Aside from the other shortcomings, just based on drive.
Hi there! I’m not sure if I fully understand the question but I’ll going to give it my best shot. Since I own a GX460, for me there’s a big and noticeable difference specifically in the NVH levels (less sound insulation in the 550) and way more body roll than my 460. To your “inexperienced” question, I think it depends on what you do have experience with. So, if you’re coming from a 4Runner (without KDSS), Wrangler, or Bronco you probably will feel right at home. However, if you’re coming into the 550 from a crossover or a car, you’ll probably find the truck like drive to be VERY different than what you’re used to because it’s tall, has a lot of body roll, and trucks just have a disconnected feeling to them because they’re body on frame and so far removed from the road. That said, if you are coming from a sedan or crossover you might not like the GX460 either as it’s also a truck. My best advice to you is to test drive a 550 and see for yourself.
In Australia, Lexus shares some motors with Toyotas. With the off road able LX and GX - the GX has never before been sold in Australia, until this new version. And really, it's almost the same as the LX. Check all the chassis dimensions, wheelbase etc. In Australia if you want a gas (petrol) motor you have to buy a Lexus GX or an LX with the same V6. Otherwise the Landcruiser Prado (GX uses this design) and the Landcruiser 300 are diesels. The LX came with the 5.7 V8 gas and in the last years, a diesel with the 4.5 litres V8 - which is what the Landcruiser 200 mostly got. But now, the diesel is a V6 3.34 litre diesel - and they are blowing up. Due to pollution Toyota have switched. And they specify a 0-20 oil. Which fails under sustained load. Toyota's motor fails the environment standards with a 5-40 oil - which works. And if a buyer users the safe oil - then his warranty is gone. So you destroy a bottom end - one wonders what is the environmental cost of all that Japanese made alloy being replaced? What is going on with our crazy world?
This will be first Lexus...4runner now....I think you made the difficult video nobody wanted to hear. I appreciate it...I need to be armed with legitimate info...good video...thank you.
Thank you! And thanks for watching! As a 4Runner owner, I think you’ll love it. However, do your homework on the V35A recall that was just announced, impacting Tundra and LX600 right now. That poor engine is having all kind of issues and so I would absolutely give this GX at least 2 years before investing so much money in it.
Yep- me too! I knew the new GX model was coming and the Lexus saleswoman told me that the new GX was going to drop the V8 engine and that the wait was going to be at least 6-12 months for the new model to arrive from Japan! She scheduled me for a GX 460 test ride and it was so smooth and rugged that I was sold on the GX 460- zero regrets!
Haha thank you! This is just a side hobby I do in my spare time for fun, I’m not a professional TH-camr; that to say I don’t actively work to build an audience. :)
Good job Josh. Excellent video. I’m definitely sticking to the 2023 Lexus GX 460 luxury build. I’m hoping to find one that’s close to where I live in Texas.🙏⭐️👍
Great video! Loved how honest you are and how you provide info on what you notice and feel and like and dislike without it seeming like you’re completely bashing the brand/vehicle. I am currently on the list for a GX550 with my local dealer. I have previously owned two 4th gen V8 4Runners, which I loved. I have driven a 2023 GX and felt like I was driving more of a soft riding car, which is not what I expected it to feel like. After watching your review on this, I think I will be very happy with the new GX. I am looking to step up from a 4th gen 4Runner, but have never been super in love with the 5th gen 4Runner. And I don’t want to go to Toyotas new 4 cylinder 6th gen 4Runner and think their new Landcruiser is hideous. I really hope that this new GX is that step up I want, but still brings in the roughness that the older 4Runners had that drove like a truck vs a huge car. Thank you for the great video that was informative but not obnoxious. I know I may be one of the few who is looking forward to the features this has. I’ve never owned a GX before this, but I think you got its absolutely right in that this will cater to those of us past 4Runner owners who are looking for a step ip from them. I personally am a HUGE Toyota fan and have owned several of them and I want to stay in a brand/family that’s reliable. Totally agree that previous GX owners are not going to love these changes, but again as a previous 4Runner owner, I’m so excited for it.
Hello! Thank you for watching and for the kind words, and glad this was helpful to you! I think you’ll really like the new GX! Before you commit, however, do read up on the myriad of problems that the V35A engine is having in the Tundra and LX600. The GX does use different turbos, but a design flaw in the engine block (which is shared with tundra and LX600) seems to be the root cause of the issues. Personally I’d give it at least 2 years for them to address the issues in their other trucks before I’d feel confident sinking this much money into a vehicle.
At the rate it’s going I don’t think I’d get one this anyways. We only have 2 local dealers here and they have a long wait list. And I requested a white in a luxury+. I have heard about the concerns with the engine/turbo issues. My thought is that if there is an issue, it’s warrantied and if it’s a recall issue it’ll be fixed/corrected by Lexus. So while I totally get this, I don’t know that it’s a huge deterrent for me. Play I sold my 4Runner almost a year ago to save up for this lol.
Remember the gx is based on the LC prado. The Prado has base utility model in some markets that’s essentially filled with hard plastics and cloth seats ands more design for work & heavy duty off road use. This is the model that the UN buys and other humanitarian organizations use them in field work. I’ve also seen cop cars and ambulances using this prado model. The hard plastic is really carry over from that model but I really hope the quality is good tho
The UN and NATO use all kinds of Land Cruisers but the iconic model you see in all the photos emblazoned with their (and commonly the Red Cross) logos is the Land Cruiser 70-Series, not the Prado. Also, you’re right that the GX is based on the Prado but prior to this new generation, there was a big degree of separation between GX and Land Cruiser Prado. That’s no longer the case.
Thanks for the video. I was going to test drive a 2024 GX 550 on August 28, 2024. I will look for a 2022/2023 GX 460. I am also going to test drive a 2024 GMC Yukon AT4.
On the suspension front it followed the LX redesign. The LX600 you have to option in AHC, whereas all trims of the LX570 had this. I'm sure some Industrial Engineer (my major, not employed in that field anymore) got a promotion because they ran the numbers and this was cheaper for the company. It betrays that Toyota standardization production as now your model mix is fragmented. For reliability and producibility you'd rather be making the same product all the time.
Interesting! I didn’t realize that. That’s actually really offensive given that LX is basically $100K+ for any desirable trim. The same is true of the Land Cruiser 200/300 too, though. And as for reliability… well that’s questionable at the moment on all these given issues that the Tundra/LX/300 series have been recalled for.
I never drove a V6 hybrid RX but I drove a Lexus RX350h with that 4 cylinder shared with Camry and Rav4. I got to say driving on slight incline or accelerating lightly the e-CVT and engine drone is quite loud for a $70k CAD vehicle. Otherwise very quiet and smooth but your videos showcase bigger engines are less stressed moving a lot weight. Similarly, a ES350 (V6) and ES300h (4 cyl) showed me the V6 stayed silent and was much faster. Idk if it's a Toyota hybrid thing but the engine drone is apparent... The ride quality of Lexus to me is not as cushy soft, very bumpy in the ES. The RX350h was cushy but you could feel the road but handling in both models was better than my Mazda3 2014. Mazda3 (2019 +) feels smooth and quiet as a Lexus. Thoughts?
Yes! Everything you say here is true. The ES doesn’t have a cushy ride because it’s meant to be more of a drivers sedan versus an RX which is a comfort oriented luxury SUV. The ES used to have a more comfortable ride when the GS was still around to fill the midsize sports sedan class but since the GS was discontinued, the ES has to be both for those for whom an IS would be too small.
@@joshjamescars Hey Josh - your opinion matters! I shared this video on the GX550 group on Facebook. Many didn't like the video/are owners/fanboys. But some also agreed with you. You're not sponsored by Lexus so you tell the truth. They agreed the interior is very cheaply made and feels rushed. Regarding your assessment the hybrid and V6 ES 2022 are very quiet but the I4 Hybrid is dronely. Ride quality on 19" rims very stiff for a $70k CAD car. I mean it absorbs bumps you can definitely feel the ridges, cracks and bumps. It's not cancelled out or smoothed out like it was in 2024 RX350h and 2019 Mazda3 sedan/HB I drove. The Mazda truly impressed me. You got to drive one. I have a 2014 Mazda3 which is stiff, loud. Opposite of the new Mazda3. Very hushed/low noise - almost Lexus-like for $40k CAD less. The Mazda3 2019 dare I say it is cushy over bumps that it's better than ES 2019 +. 🤩It's super small though and poor visibility.
Thanks for putting a name on those sways and nosedives GX550 and Land Cruiser have... they've cut out the KDSS(Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) and it's bad
Can you do a video on the differences between the GX and LX and which you would recommend? I am not sure what is the difference besides the LX being bigger and more luxurious.
Frankly I wouldn’t buy either (at least not yet). The LX is suffering from the same engine issues that have been plaguing the Tundra, so I’d give it a year at least before jumping in. Same with the GX.
Hey Larry! YES!! I’m so glad you were able to get yours when you did. I can actually remember exactly when you replied and said you’d pulled the trigger and taken delivery!
That’s a ways back, but I can say newer navigator to this, there’s no competition the navigator will ride better in every way, because it’s an on-road oriented vehicle. This GX is a dedicated off-roader that’s meant to stay on road just long enough to get you to the trail.
This story is familiar to Mercedes owners who realized the cost cutting that Mercedes implemented with the W220 chassis after the cost is no object W140.
@@joshjamescars I’m a W123 owner that grew up in the “Engineered Like No Other Cars in the World” era. I can sympathize with you when you realize the brand you love is slowly drifting away from the attributes that made it legendary.
Appreciate your review. I think Lexus set out to build something to compete with the Defender with a "rugged" interior and boxy shape. I think you are right tho, Lexus should have spent a little more effort on this interior to differentiate from the Landcruiser a bit more. I think a lot of car companies unfortunately are going that way with the interiors and I'm sure it has to do with price point in a tough market. Too much technology, not enough refinement. I have not driven it, but I have spent some time with it and one additional thing that came to mind to me was it felt so fragile. Body panels are super thin and the exterior plastics felt so flexy. It does not scream quality to me.
Yes! Completely agree with everything you say here. And to your point about differentiating it from the Land Cruiser, that’s what I don’t understand. Why bother even making a Lexus version if the interior is going to be actually less nice, IMO, than the Land Cruiser. I’d have no problem with this if it were a Toyota vehicle being sold at the Toyota dealer for maybe $5-10K less given the difference in brand. And I also completely agree at the over indexing on technology over refinement and the way everything in cars is getting so thin and cheap these days.
A very eye opening video. My mind has been pondering about purchasing my first Lexus, now I'm not real sure. I drive a 2018 Navigator XL Reserve and I'm wanting midsize SUV...thought GX550 was a no brainer...not so sure anymore.
You’ll probably be disappointed, in all honesty. The Navigator is like my GX460 and the Escalade. Old school, limousine like luxury and refinement with the body-on-frame isolation. The GX550 is now a hardcore off-roader that seems to compete most directly with higher-trim Broncos. So, if you wouldn’t consider a Bronco, you probably shouldn’t consider the GX550. Toyota’s turbo V6 also isn’t nearly as refined or mature as the 3.5 Ecoboost that you have in your Navigator.
Can you give me your opinion? I’m looking at a 2024 rx 450h+, an rx 500h, a bmw x5 s40i, and a 2024 4 runner with the older 6 cylinder engine. What car would you recommend? Thanks ❤
Wow, such different cars there. I think before you decide you need to narrow down what you want because you’re not going to get everything in a single car. Do you care most about luxury, performance, or reliability? The BMW is going to drive GREAT but German cars are expensive to own and I always recommend budgeting $2K a year for routine maintenance and incidentals like if you got a flat tire. The RX450h+ and 500h are solid options but they are incredibly expensive for what they are (I think the RX’s interior has come down quite a bit in quality versus older models). The 4Runner is great but it’s a dinosaur. Some people will love that (I love that about my GX460) but it drives like a truck and isn’t fast or thrilling in any way. I’d actually recommend a 2023 GX460 over a 2024 4Runner. If I had to pick between the options you’ve given me here, it would probably be the 450h+ just because I love Toyota’s PHEV powertrain, its reliable, has good power, and allows you to drive on EV only driving range; but it’s not thrilling or exciting to drive in any way. It’s a premium driving appliance.
Agree, did a test drive 2024 tacoma, feels vibration when car reaches certain speed, don't know its because the engine, off-road tires or platform resonance.
I have a 2014 fully loaded RX450h. The interior is just like your GX460 ; all milky white leather and a lot of wood. They are really nice! Recently I bought a fully loaded TX350. The interior is just okay. My old RX is way better than New TX. Other new models like RX and NX they all have the same not so premium interior! I don’t know what is going on with LEXUS now. The price of the car goes higher and higher; but the quality of materials they use goes lower and lower.
Yes! I had a 23 NX hybrid that had an interior like the TX. Sold it after only 6 months because exactly like you say, the price goes higher but the quality goes lower.
Seriously, this is an insanely well-detailed testament of the GX experience. Your critiques precisely identify some of the issues I’ve seen in new Toyotas relative to their prior standards. You do a great job of catching some of the negatives that are hard to put a finger on. Respect.
Nice explanation where others never pointed out on the suspension and interior mistakes, EVERYTHING is getting cheaply made more and more while prices go up!
Great video as always. Agree 100%. I have a GX 460. The GX 550 is nice but the interior lost the elegance of the 460 and 470. Doesn’t look like a GX at all. They could have at least given the luxury trim the classic wood inlays and higher quality controls that made it unique. Also, the windshield will most likely be damaged by stones as it’s so vertical. Hopefully the V6 is more reliable than the Tundra. I wouldn’t touch one for at least 3-4 years. Even the newer models of the 460 got cheaper. Lost the leather seats, gear shift, dimming side mirrors, and molding that protected the doors. Lexus seems to be going downhill to me.
I’m 100% with you on not touching one for a while. And totally agree that they should have at least made the Luxury trim more premium. Maybe in 3-4 years they’ll have course corrected with a better interior, LOL! Anyhow, thanks, as always for watching
I love my 2024 AWD NX 350 excellent car. Ride quality and quietness is superb. Quality of materials especially seats 💺 is top notch. Could some of the other materials be improved……. Yes but at a moment with high inflation it’s still a great value. The build quality you’re talking about is now $100,000+
I owned a 23 NX350h for 6 months. I don’t mind it, especially given the price. But I disagree that the build quality I’m looking for is $100K. Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60, and Genesis GV80, Mercedes GLE, and Jeep Grand Cherokee all have MUCH nicer interiors at around the same prices as the GX550. I also think the Land Cruiser has a nicer interior and it costs less than this does.
It’s unfortunate but there really isn’t anything like it on the market. The only remaining truly luxurious body on frame SUVs are full-sizers like QX80, Escalade, and LX600. Though only the last-gen QX80 and Escalade can have a V8. And those are all going to be between $90-$100K. For a midsize SUV you’ll have to go with a unibody crossover like the MDX but that will also only have a V6 (the TX is absolute garbage so skip that all day long). So yeah… the GX460 was the last of its kind.
Thank you! There are a number of issues that give me pause about the GX. The V35A engine which is shared with LS500, Tundra, and Sequoia has also had issues.
My 2004 Lexus had issues with the cracking peeling polyurethane dashpad but, for a V6 CUV it has great pickup, fuel economy, and ease of driving. 235HP and 245 ft-lbs from a 3MZ-FE with a sweet sound despite only a 5900 rpm redline. I also love the wood trim and plush genuine leather seats. If I buy a Lexus, I'd go for an older model. The NX200T and NX300 are amazing, and since it's a smaller CUV, the 2.0T engine it comes with is plenty for this vehicle. I'd take a 2015 NX200T over a new GX550 any day no matter what. Even the 2018-2024 Lexus ES350 is much more premium than the GX550. But really wished Lexus made an ES F with the 3.4L twin turbo V6 but bumped up to 479 HP from 389 HP, a 7000 rpm redline, transversely mounted instead of longitudinal, and a mini V12 sound. Lexus really needs to bring back the pursuit of perfection slogan and really act on it.
So I have been watching your videos and really feel the new Lexus models are all question marks in terms of reliability. Lexus reliability can be claimed on all their old models which is why it is the perfect time to buy slightly used Lexus right now. Totally different class but that is why I am going with the IS500 for the quality, reliability and V8 before they redesign it in the next couple of years. I think in 10 years we will look back as this is a step backwards and hopefully they get it right in 3-4 years.
Hello! You can’t go wrong with the IS500! It will definitely be the last of its kind. Meanwhile, Lexus has already stated that it intends to be a full BEV automaker by 2030 so IMO they’re just phoning in this last generation of ICE and hybrid vehicles while they focus on the BEV portfolio of the next decade. So this isn’t the end of this new Lexus, it’s just the very beginning of their transition into a very different company. It’s also why we see Toyota vehicles (like Crown Signia) getting more premium as that’s what will take over for Lexus owners who want to stick with Toyota.
Yes! For a 4Runner owner, I think you’ll love it. But definitely consider the Land Cruiser too. For about $10K less (OT+ to loaded LC trim) you really don’t lose out on much.
Lexus is going the wrong direction with small turbo engines, plastic interiors, and less premium feel with higher costs.
The turbo engines I could get over if it weren’t for the low rent interiors. What I was thinking while driving that GX is, even if it had the 4.6L V8, I still wouldn’t buy it solely based on the awful interior.
It feels like a Jeep or bronco made by Toyota
That is exactly why I decided against upgrading to a Lexus. It is valuing off-road handling and sportiness above perfection and luxury. So sad.
I get why they had to in Toyato for emission and government reason, they should have kept V8 in the Lexus trucks to differentiate better between brand and should have been minimal penalty since less production.
This comment should be in a giant marble stone and put at Lexus HQ in America and Japan.
With the said, what brand alternatives should previous lexus owners look to?
@Justintm I have an Infiniti QX60 in the driveway for review that I really don’t want to give back. That (or the MDX) is where I’d go to replace an RX, but not so sure about replacing a GX460.
Likewise, thank you @joshjamescars! Your videos and reviews (as well as those of @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD) prompted the purchase of my 2023 GX, and I am just smitten with this beauty (and its inner beast)!
@bavardage FANTASTIC! So glad so many of us got a 460 before they drove off into the sunset.
Although not the normal Lexus customer they have to sell a lot more vehicles
The true Lexus owner is going to buy the luxury plus. Luxury plus should be more on par with the 2023 luxury. Give them a year or 2 to dial it in and the 550 will be exceptional
My father in law was ready to write a check for a $110,000 Lincoln Navigator last year. They actually declined him because they wanted to make their 2-3% cut on interest.
So when you say that new customers aren’t cash buyers, how sure are you that your bosses aren’t pushing for financing?
This video is going to make a lot of GX460 owners really, really happy about they're investment. I'm surprised Lexus cheaped out like this.
It’s SHOCKING to me. Like I couldn’t imagine spending that much on this when I spent about $10K less on my GX460 less than a year ago.
I can't believe I wrote "they're" instead of their. My apologies.
You are right,I love my 2021 460gx
I’m incredibly happy with my old 460. I would not get the new one even they paid me to trade this.
Lexus is no longer a luxury brand. I think Toyota is making a big mistake.
I think they’re entering their Infiniti phase. While Infiniti enters their Lexus phase. 😂
@@joshjamescars😅
@@joshjamescars i remember when Infiniti was cool in the 90s. Things come into the fashion and out.
@rxl77 To each their own, but in my book, Lexus is falling out of fashion for anyone who cares about quality beyond the badge.
@@joshjamescars Genesis is the new Lexus.
Detailed take on the 550, well done, I can almost feel riding it as well the way you describe it. Thank you.
Thank you! And thanks for watching and riding along with me ;)
I'm so glad your videos convinced me to grab a 460 two months ago when stocks were dwindling. Thank you for making such informative videos.
AWESOME! And congrats! I’m so glad to hear so many people were able to grab one while they could. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! :)
Excellent review. This is the first one I've seen pointing out cheapening in materials etc. Appreciated.
Thank you! And I know, judging by the comments most people think the same thing I do but no one else has said it in reviews.
Thanks for the video - the folks who are most excited about this vehicle are the ones who don't own the GX460 - they have not experienced the overall refinement of that vehicle, including the surefooted handling, even in inclement weather, and the interior build quality and materials. Its also very quiet even at speed, something you really appreciate over time.
sadly that seems true based on these early production reviews 😢
I think “the company” would love it if I drove myself right off a cliff LOL. 😂 Glad you enjoyed!
Nope this dude is a real enthusiast, their own favorite car brand biggest hater 😂 out of love
Just purchased a 23 GX 460 Premium, and this makes me a proud owner.
Keep it forever! There’s nothing like it on the market anymore.
Continuous improvement. Lets hope Lexus gets the memo and they improve the 550 and make it more worthy of the Lexus name.
It’s easy to make huge improvements when you’re starting from something so mundane to begin with. 😂
@@georgeg1947let’s hope they “wake” up and fix the error of there current ways.
I love this video!!! Great job, giving an actual opinion, not just regurgitating back what Lexus says, which is unfortunately the reality of most “reviews.”
Ugh, I know. Most “reviews” are just advertising these days parading as consumer advice. Especially all of the Toyota specific content creators.
REALLY! Spot on!
The cost of a new Toyota Tacoma is in Lexus territory.
Yes!! That whole situation is absolutely absurd too.
Wow! What a great review! Thanks for the high quality content
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Everything you said is what I experienced on a quick demo drive. The vibrations at idle and the ride showed the car isn't ready.
Our 22 Sienna has that same fake plastic wood. lol...
Haha! I love this! And I agree completely like the increase in capability didn’t have to come with a decrease in luxury.
I think that's exactly what it is. American penny pinchers cheapen everything. It's throughout our productions.
And I thought I was the only one noticing the same...
American Lexus is becoming like FCA mid 2000.
Sega of Japan killed sega not the American division……
I’ll never sell my GX460. Love everything about it except the mpg’s
Glad you went with the GX460, it’s a great car!
Bro, don’t stop making content! Love this channel so much
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you’re enjoying!
Cheers!
Great review👍🏾, …..not what I wanted to hear , but you’re really detailed , unbiased and professional
Thank you so much! But also, if you love it, buy it, because you’ll love it. Just because I don’t love it doesn’t mean no one should buy it. :)
Thank you so much Josh………my GX 460 will be staying with me……and I too, love the wood and the refinement of my 460. Take good care.
Thank you for watching! And yes, same here! You take care as well. :)
I’m glad I got the 2023 GX 460 Luxury with Sport package last year. I went from a 2021 4 Runner TRD Off Road Premium to the GX.
Congrats!! I am SO glad so many of us were able to buy a GX460 last year while we could.
@lozada1971 Absolutely, me too. I traded in the same year and model 4 runner as you for a 2023 GX460 w/the premium plus package. Josh knows, the best decision I made, no regrets.
@BigdogLarry Yessss! You’re one of my OG viewers and I’m so glad it’s treating you well!
For the same price, we recently picked up a CPO LX 570 instead of the GX 550. So glad we did…
I love, love, love the LX570.
I was looking the prices of the 2016/2022 ES350/RX350/GX450 with v6/v8...they still holding their value 20k/40k plus.
GV80 feels special inside. PLUS lots of options for interior colours.
Well their way to blend it together defender is an off roader but has the drive and interior of a luxury vechile
I just bought a 21' gx 460 last week. The old infotainment doesn't bother me. Hardly use it in any car. Got it at a great price in great condition. Hope to have it for the next 20 years or more
Same here! I have CarPlay in my 23 and can count on one hand how many times I’ve used it… as long as I have sat nav I’m set.
Yes. 😂
I really liked your video in general because it was an in-depth video about every single detail about the new GX 550. Keep up the good work ❤
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Yes!! Definitely.
Thanks for your honest unbiased evaluation, your video just put the final nail in my GX550 dream. So disappointed with Lexus.
I’d maybe shift your dreams over to the new Land Cruiser. It’s expensive but at $69K nicely optioned that’s $3K less than this GX Premium I drove. And I can cut the Toyota way more slack because it is actually a Toyota.
I mean try to test drive it and see what you think... but so far everyone's has the same general fit/finish/feel complaints
You really lucked out! The GX 460 is a 'forever' vehicle.
I drove one great it’s a fun truck but the Lexus badge doesn’t belong on this car feels like a Jeep not like a defender
YES. Exactly this. If it had the Toyota badge it would be fine.
The plastics, fit and finish.
@@joshjamescars It’s very disappointing.
The interior of high end Hyundai Palisade is way nicer then tx the tx is a grand highlander with bad lipstick
@@mysteroussillymoment Haha! Thats hilarious! 💄 😂😂👍
@ I guess the change of demographics is moving from intelligent buyers looking for the highest quality at a good value to umm, the opposite of that.
For the same price, I can buy BMW X5 and enjoy the drive as well as the quality interior. I am done with Lexus. Shame on you Lexus.
Yep! Exactly! Or for the same kind of interior quality you can also get any random Toyota for a good $30K less.
And be in the shop half of the year
@smirin7078 I have kept my 5 series for one decade with very few problems. Sure, Toyota products last longer, but charging BMW price for Toyota quality? Come on! Lexus is a step up from Toyota just like Audi is a step up from Volkswagen.
Unfortunately you are 100% correct - the X5 is the replacement for the GX460. Its very highly rated and one of the most reliable BMWs.
And vice versa, I wouldn’t buy this even if it had a V8 simply because the interior is an insult to anyone spending $80K+
you made great points about the kdss system and the lack of it in half of the trims of the newer gx550.
I look at what Mazda is doing with the CX 70 and CX 90 and would rather have the Turbo S Premium Plus for similar money to the RX with nicer interiors with the twin turbo inline 6.
Yes! They still have some transmission behavior and reliability issues to work through, but that’s expected since the CX90 is entirely new.
Amen- Lexus took the Lexus luxury out of the GX and transformed it into a 4Runner! No thank you!
In short, we should opt for GX that has KDSS ie Overtrail.
@@CeeJay591 duh, what is Lexus thinking?
My 2022 LX600 lives up to Lexus old values I believe. New GX is a step down
I like the LX600. I prefer the LX570, but I agree the 600 didn’t lose all the luxury like the GX did.
Please do a video on LX600.. i would like to hear your thoughts on that vehicle. If possible, please do a comparison, the new vs the old.......
I’m so glad I went with one of the last 460s instead of waiting on a 550.
Same here!
How do you only have that many followers! Very well done review. Thanks!
Haha thank you! This is just a side hobby I do in my spare time for fun, I’m not a professional TH-camr; that to say I don’t actively work to build an audience. :)
Then more kudos to you if you’re not after an audience can produce such videos!
@Eliehbk You are so very kind! I get into it a little more here if you’re interested:

Totally agreed!!! I’ve since driven the Land Cruiser and 100% agree… neither are a great on-road experience.
Im still driving my 06 gx470 and gonna continue doing so until the wheels fall off.
So shall we check back in 2056 and see how it’s doing then? 😂 I will be doing the same with my 460!
Great to you my GX friend! Love the GX 460!
Great and honest review Josh. As you know, I’m very happy I got my 2023 GX 460 when I did, just like you, no regrets. Love it!
Hey Larry! YES!! I’m so glad you were able to get yours when you did. I can actually remember exactly when you replied and said you’d pulled the trigger and taken delivery!
I used to drive 2012 Lincoln Navigator.. How would do GX550 compare to my former car on the riding comfort and shakes?
That’s a ways back, but I can say newer navigator to this, there’s no competition the navigator will ride better in every way, because it’s an on-road oriented vehicle. This GX is a dedicated off-roader that’s meant to stay on road just long enough to get you to the trail.
This story is familiar to Mercedes owners who realized the cost cutting that Mercedes implemented with the W220 chassis after the cost is no object W140.
That’s EXACTLY what happened here. The W140 was such a beautiful, timeless design too. The W220 was way more trendy (also like this GX).
As a GX460 owner, great video Josh, thank you!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
@@joshjamescars thank you so much!!!! What a thorough answer❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this review. Would like to also see you review the driving for the Overtrail trim.
Yes! I definitely want to get an Overtrail to see how it stacks up!
Seriously, this is an insanely well-detailed testament of the GX experience. Your critiques precisely identify some of the issues I’ve seen in new Toyotas relative to their prior standards. You do a great job of catching some of the negatives that are hard to put a finger on. Respect.
Thank you so much!
Josh, with what you see on the market, what would you consider a worthy GX460 replacement?
It’s unfortunate but there really isn’t anything like it on the market. The only remaining truly luxurious body on frame SUVs are full-sizers like QX80, Escalade, and LX600. Though only the last-gen QX80 and Escalade can have a V8. And those are all going to be between $90-$100K. For a midsize SUV you’ll have to go with a unibody crossover like the MDX but that will also only have a V6 (the TX is absolute garbage so skip that all day long). So yeah… the GX460 was the last of its kind.
this is the best analysis i’ve seen on the new GX. i saw another video that mentioned issue with rear air system
This is another great review...you are so right, as a 4Runner owner, I find the GX550( trail+) the best upgrade for me...
Yes! For a 4Runner owner, I think you’ll love it. But definitely consider the Land Cruiser too. For about $10K less (OT+ to loaded LC trim) you really don’t lose out on much.
