the other thing that pisses me off alot is, it takes them 3-6 months to do something that modders did in a week or two.

I honestly bet stuff like DLSS would have been ready to go a week or so after launch, but they don't want to update the game every time a tiny little improvement is made. If they did, y'alls mods would break every week. Waiting till there's a substantial amount of improvements before updating is the way to go.

You gotta remember modders will just release that one feature but developers generally will yeah do that stuff but package it all in one update. They aren't going to be updating the game for one feature everytime they finish one.

People overrate Modders like crazy. It’s been almost a year and what’s the biggest mod that came out for Starfield? A Star Wars skin pack? A different menu UI? I’d love for Modders to be able to add stuff in the game with the ease that YT commenters think it can happen but coding is hard. There’s a reason these games are made by AAA studios and not in somebody’s basement.

Todd explaining the reason why paid mods are the way they are is because of their experience in fallout 76 is exactly what a lot of people myself included were worried about. People bought stuff in another game which showed Bethesda and just shows other companies in general that people are willing to pay for the stuff that they're selling. Even if that stuff happens to be mediocre cosmetics or just quests or anything if someone buys it there's a market for it. That's why companies keep going forward with these little payment editions. If people stopped buying them they wouldn't keep making them but the problem is there's always some people buying which shows that the system works.

There's no easy solution, because a whopping 90% to 95% of players can refrain from purchasing microtransactions, but as long as whales keep buying loads of them then that is all that is needed for the companies to profit a ton.

@aimeerobidoux7635 This isn't possible. We'd get Elder Scrolls in 2040 or even 2050. Building an engine is an INSANE amount of work. It is far, far more difficult than building a game. Game engines are one of the most complex pieces of software you can write. Of course things like an operating system are even more complex but still. There are so many systems involved with an engine. You can't just start from scratch without a REALLY good reason. Considering Bethesda titles generate millions in profit, there is no reason they can give to executives to create a new engine.

When talking about Creation Engine Matty says that he doesn’t believe that they should switch engines and that creation engine does a lot of the things people love about Bethesda Games it is not just “couching”, that’s actually what Matty thinks and he mentioned it repeatedly in his own videos before Starfield release and after it. So I don’t think that it is fair to say that Matty is not being honest here. Same with a lot of stuff in the interview when Luke says that he is couching the questions he mostly just says what he thinks

Thing about the engine. Unreal is really cumbersome to work with cause its an "all purpose" engine that has tons of things in it that you don't need. Not saying unreal can't achieve crazy graphical fidelity and has amazing tech built into it, but these marketing snippets and tech demos are all missing the actual game and that is what really is taking the resources away. We often see very overhyped tech-bro advertisement videos and people are amazed by its bits and pieces that are highlighted but don't understand that its way more complicated with an actual game.

I think most people don't understand the art of giving an interview and that's why they wouldn't get an interview from someone like Todd. You don't go off on somebody asking hard questions because those interviews tend to not last long and you won't get anything out of it. You want to ask questions that make them feel comfortable as possible because the longer you get them to talk the more likely if they have not so great motives they will slip and tell on themselves.

Go look at how mods are actually made. Obviously the difficulty varies based on the complexity of the mod, but basic mods don’t even require coding. Bethesda did all that hard work and packaged up the tools in the Creation Kit for modders to utilise. I’m not interested in Starfield mods personally, but the engine improvements made for SF will allow the modders to do some incredible things.

48:10 not exactly true, you have to look at it from the perspective of a global market, okay picture Amazon for example, do you think Amazon doesn't charge people who sell stuff on their site? Fair question right? Because I'm pretty sure they charge the owner of who's selling that product, or they get a certain type of portion of the sale, and because their website is a global market that reaches Millions perhaps billions of people all around the Earth, that I wouldn't say is nothing, I mean the alternate argument is people talk about their patreon, they go well in patreon we get paid more, that's true but in patreon they also take a portion of your money per sale, that is incredibly factual truth, but the other problem with patreon is Their audience pool is for lower, and not everyone wants to subscribe to one specific motor in order to access their mods when there's potentially tens of thousands of mod offers they could find in a single place and pay for mods there, you have to understand this concept in the terms of global audience numbers, so they might be getting paid higher on patreon when they sell mods, but they're going to get a far lower pool of supporters in that system, and the vast majority of people either don't know about this mod author and or they can't afford them, it's kind of like this nonsense with Netflix and other streaming platforms, people can only pay so much money to gain access to all of the streaming platforms, and by the end of the day if you add them all up separately, it comes about as high as a cable bill, so do they really save money in the at the end of the day? I would say it's about the same, but it's maybe worse because you have to have separate accounts and that's annoying enough as it is, people would rather go to a single platform to get all their entertainment, we don't like this compartmentalization of too many streaming sites, it's annoying, some people can deal with it better than others, it's like the people who are on social media and they're on every fucking popular social media website then a few others that aren't so popular but they're all on them,.
So the modding Creations store through Bethesda will potentially reach a global market of people who will want to purchase and download these mods, but you on your tiny little patreon page you might reach a hundred Subs, and that might pay for basically your lifestyle, but some people may just fall off and not follow you on that system, yeah you get paid a lot more, but you're still getting a portion of people who either can't afford you or you're not getting viewed by higher numbers of potential buyers in that system, cuz you're kind of hidden.
Another point that I need to point out is Bethesda is offering that server to the mods in that system, servers cost money I don't know if you know that, but servers cost money per month, it depends on how much content is being uploaded to it as well, I mean it could be thousands of gigabytes a month, and servers are only so big, but the cost of that server goes up depending upon how much is being put on that server per month, so it can be crazy high at the end of the day, so I wouldn't exactly call that doing nothing or providing nothing, in order to not only make a profit off of the mods but also pay for the overhead of the server costs and the constant improvements on the creation store Page fixing bugs and whatnot, all that cost money, so again Bethesda isn't just doing nothing, they're doing a tangible realistic thing that it makes realistic sense for them to charge for, now one thing we haven't seen Bethesda do, they could do it if they want it but they're not that scummy, but let's just use for example let's just say they wanted to charge the modders for using their creation engine? That would be horrible horrible decision and it would turn so many people off from modding, which is why they allow free access to the program, in my opinion they should also have free lessons and how to use the program, now there is quite a bit of information out there of people already doing this that did it for free on TH-cam, but they're not professional there's a lot of miscommunication or methods that don't exactly come off as easy to understand by all users and that kind of throws off some people from the modding scene all together, so I would like Bethesda to do some professional tutorials of how to use the creation kit and make that as a free service build it into the app itself, just put a bunch of links so if you want to know how to do something in the creation kit but you can't figure it out on the spot you can just type it into the kit and it will go into some kind of search engine and then it will bring up the links to TH-cam or wherever the information is that you could watch and learn it's through tutorial of how to improve your skills in using the creation kit.
This is just my opinion, but if they want people to do mods on their website and make money, they have to offer something just as valuable knowledge is valuable access to the tool is valuable so people could hone their craft, eventually people might want to sell their mods, I think it's a great idea, now when it comes to monetization I think Bethesda needs to figure out a better system I would suggest a subscription tier list instead of paint having the customer pay per mod, cuz that's just a little too expensive on the consumer.

Fromsoft have since then had critical and commercial success with Demon's souls, DS 1-3 each with 1-3 DLCs, Bloodborne + DLC, Sekiro, Elden Ring AND Armored Core 6 while developing an internal routine where Miyazaki no longer needs to be heavily involved for their games to be successful. The thing that has always struck me as not making sense about the creation engine is that it sacrifices so much in terms of performance and capability to have the "every object has a model and physics"-thing, when it's such a peripheral element to all the games.

Creation engines biggest issues is the stories Bethesda decides to tell knowing its limitations. They want to tell big grand tales like the “wars” in oblivion and Skyrim but the engine absolutely does not support it. Creation engine would be a much better fit for telling a prequel story in the Starfield universe about a human trying to escape earth as it’s dying than the planet hopping artifact hunt we actually got.

Whilst I wish he'd pressed harder on some of the negatives, I can't blame Matty when he's talking to someone he's clearly a fan of. I agree that Todd is the ultimate salesman, but in a non personal way, I really wish he wasn't, or that someone else did the press interviews. Todd is too slick, and constantly brings every possibly negative question round to a positive for BGS. By any measure, starfield was not a flop, but it certainly hasn't been what a lot of people hoped, and a lot of that isn't over hype, it's just things that are straight bad. Starfield killed any optimism I have for ES6.
In that situation, constantly saying how great everything is rather than saying "our bad, that should have been there from the start" just gets annoying. I don't want spin, I want honesty. Like the 6 week update thing, that's a broken promise that didn't happen, and it actually took 6 months to get maps, which should have been in the game. Yet he brushed past it, saying it wasn't something they could stick to, with no apology or explanation why that plan changed beyond "some content takes longer", and then treated the maps and sliders as "content" they'd been working on, rather than basic features that a AAA game should 100% have launched with.
Creations just feels slimy to me. In principle, I support a platform where console users can get mods, and where mod creators can get paid for their work. But the implementation of it comes across really badly. I have no issue with BGS making money, they're a business, but the methods they use are so blatant, it spoils what could be a positive. They need to disclose the percentages of what creators get, and they need to scrap the awful minimum 1000 credit purchase. Creators don't necessarily get the "change" from 1000, as the pricing works out awkwardly, but BGS do every time. And that screams greed, rather than supporting a community. Referring to previous creations offerings as a guide for how they did their pricing is not a good look when I believe there is a class action suit coming from Fallout 4 for BGS getting around a "season pass" for DLC by claiming creations do not count as DLC. Not to mention, there was outcry at the time for the pricing in those games too.
It's probably just a personal thing for me, but I can't stand when Todd calls them "our creators". They're not yours, they're not your employees, they're the community that fixes and prolongs your games or even makes them playable. I would not consider playing a BGS game without at least some level of mods, and when it gets to that level, you owe them a lot more than they owe you.
Final note, thank your Luke for making the effort you do with reactions, it does feel like an actual discussion with alternate viewpoints, as opposed to just mindless affirmative noises. IMO if you can eat your lunch whilst watching the content, you're not adding anything to it.

The problem with the engine discussion is that it isn't holding them back. A new engine isn't going to have a meaningful impact in the type of game they make. You even gave the example of their excellent physics system that they don't utilise in their level design. They made a conscious decision to not add land vehicles at launch. These aren't engine limitations. They're the outcome of writing and prioritisation decisions.

Xbox saved Starfield by giving it more time and putting some of its studios to assist in the final development. I'm really curious how they're going to deliver TEOS VI in this engine of theirs... As much as I understand the sentiment that they cannot just get away with what they used to be able to get away with, I do also feel like Bethesda and even Ubisoft have a target on their backs. And I think the biggest thing that made me feel this recently was actually assassins creed shadows reactions. For the first time in years I feel genuinely excited (curbing my hype as much as I can) for an Assassin's Creed game, but aaaaaall of the comments on the video were literally like "Oh wow, doors just magically open themselves in this game, lazy ass devs". At a certain point, people will refuse and I mean refuse to give any game a chance if it's from Ubisoft or Bethesda, and I do think that's unfair. Wait until it releases and make your decision with a clean slate. If you go in wanting it to be bad, no matter how good it is you'll probably think it's bad because you will hyper focus on every little detail that one game or another did better or differently instead of appreciating this game for what it does really good. So in that sense to me it does feel like they have targets on their backs. You can have big things to criticize and still be unfairly criticized as a whole.

I honestly believe Todd himself is part of the issue with this. He's the ultimate salesman, and hypes his games up constantly to 16x what they should be. I could be wrong, but I don't remember much negativity at all during the build up to Starfield, it was only once the game dropped and all the bits it was missing became painfully obvious that things turned. That and the perception of modding has gone from "wow look what I can add to the game" to "great, I can fix the game and add interesting content". I do agree about Ubisoft though, as someone who has never been interested in an AC game, watching the internet losing their mind over Yasuke, whether rightly or wrongly seemed pretty dramatic. But then again, I was annoyed about the Dragon Age trailer so I can't talk.
What I would say now though is that BGS have painted a target on their own back for ES6, simply because their offerings have seemed to decrease in quality control and reception with every game, a lot of people (myself included) are getting very tense thinking of the potential problems with what is a beloved franchise.

If you're taking issue with what I'm saying, it's because you recognize the truth. Or, you might be trying to emphasize a minuscule difference by classifying one as an RPG and the other as a story-driven narrative. However, if you really think about it they are more alike than you’re giving credit too, crafting weapons, doing side missions leveling up your character, the only real difference is Starfield allows you to create a character and LOU doesn't… Down to the actual nitty-gritty they both occur within confined spaces. Just like when you roam around Seattle “LOU2” or explore a planet “Starfield”, it's within those specific little confines or bubbles as Luke says. When you're in Seattle, navigating on horseback amidst various buildings, everything is meticulously crafted and not copied and pasted. In Bethesda's game, you land on a planet and after running for fifteen minutes, you come across the same cave repetitively with the same enemies, same mechanics. This never occurs in The Last of Us, and yet you can traverse each objective vastly different because it gives you that choice and Starfield does not. when it comes to Bethesda and it’s games being sold as full products when they’re not, it’s kind of like a Ponzi scheme they give you a bare bones game and they expect everyone else to fix it. Make it better, make it's full, make it awesome, add actual character, and it’s sad that the community has to do all of this without any of the actual pay “Excuse the four mod makers they added to Bethesda”😱, also well Bethesda makes billions of dollars and we the community do all the work because they’ve been allowed to take advantage of us, and now people are seeing they can’t make anything much better than they did in 2011 tbh.
You're just so wrong and as far as me being misleading or disingenuous is obnoxiously ignorant.
One studio has the gall to take risks and show passion and sadly one has lost most of their creativity and fervor.

@@Amias1221how tf do you compare TLU to SF? Come up with a different comparison. It’s like you just took your favorite game and compared it to SF.

38:28 while you pontificate, bloviate, and snarkily explain "current gen console standards", you know what *another* 'current gen standard' is that is being forgotten by literally ALL other AAA developers?
The ridiculously detailed physics engine their custom tech has! You said yourself not so many minutes before how the amount of world items and the way they interact with each other is immense and something unique to BGS. Now, I totally agree that they need to do more with it.
They should FOR SURE do what you talked about with moving debris to find a mcguffin, or finding other ways to utilize the tech would be important and beneficial. But NO other game does physics interactables to the scale BGS games do.
Don't sit here and say the only measure of current or next gen is graffix alone. Yes,. no load screens are nice. But now tell those games to add the hundreds to THOUSANDS of physics items Fallout has and let's see how the lack of loading screens works out for those games.
Fuckin' hilarious, man. Get some perspective.

Nobody cares about thousand items interacting with each other. You are talking like this massively underutilized physics feature is worth having over a videogame that isn’t riddled with loading screens lmao. Absolutely nobody gives a shit, the reason other games don’t have it, is because its garbage. “Get some perspective”, bsg fanatic.

Game was definitely disappointing, but I'm pretty sure the game made a lot of money, there's a reason why Bethesda isn't bankrupt rn 😂
