By far the best interview with Todd when it comes to balancing good all around questions, asking about specific topics that a fan would think to ask, making pretty efficient use of time, and clearing up things that fans have been wondering about for awhile. Most interviews just ask the same things like “when is ES6?” And just waste a question. The phrasing and verbiage is everything in these interviews, so excellent job Matty!! I turned 53 this week. I can see how younger generations would see Todd Howard as an important figure. For my generation, it was Richard Garriott, the creator of Ultima. He was one of the most important figures in the creation and early evolution of computer RPGs, but he eventually ran his course. Origin Systems sold out to Electronic Arts, and Garriott went down some paths that old Ultima fans didn't appreciate. For me, the Ultima series peaked with Ultima VII, and it went down hill rapidly after that. After Garriott parted ways with Origin and Electronic Arts, he never did anything else in the industry that gained significant attention. Though I will always appreciate what Richard Garriott and the people who worked with him accomplished, I also recognize that he had limited staying power. I'm starting to feel the same way about Todd Howard. He didn't create Elder Scrolls, but his passion helped to keep it alive through tough times, and his leadership on Morrowind was critical to the revitalization and long term viability of Bethesda. But his best work was around this time - Morrowind and Oblivion, and bringing Fallout into the 3-D system that had become popular at the time. Beyond this, I feel like the cracks were starting to show. There was a noticeable decline from Ultima VII to Ultima VIII, but Skyrim and Fallout 4 still generally work well. It is after this that problems really develop, with Fallout 76 and Starfield. I see Todd Howard, who was once a highly skilled developer and producer, becoming a marketroid. He is a good salesman, and he tells people what they want to hear. The problem is that the final product doesn't measure up, and the criticisms of Fallout 76 and Starfield bear this out. I won't play Fallout 76 because I can't stand multiplayer games, but I have followed the news since its launch. It seems that Bethesda has managed to salvage something reasonably playable after the initial disaster, but a multiplayer Fallout wasn't ever something that the core fan base asked for, and we have been waiting for a very long time for another mainline single player game. As for Starfield, I have not yet bought it, but again, I have followed the news, and I have watched game play videos. Daggerfall was my first Bethesda game, and while I loved it because it was doing something new, I must regard it as something of a failed experiment because of its overreliance on procedural generation. It looks like Starfield was heavily influenced by Daggerfall, and not in a good way. If it had brought back the depth of RPG systems in Daggerfall, I would have been interested. Daggerfall has some of the best RPG systems I have ever encountered. Unfortunately, it looks like Starfield has brought back the worst aspect of Daggerfall, which is the huge, repetitive, boring procedurally generated world. Maybe Todd and his crew wanted to bring back some of Bethesda's past, but if this is the case, they brought back the worst part of it. If Todd Howard is looking at this aspect of Daggerfall and seeing it as a way forward, then I'm afraid that he is going down the wrong path, and it is only inevitable that Bethesda will release a game that is reminiscent of Ultima IX, which was the ignominious downfall of the single player Ultima games. (Ultima Online was, and still is, successful, but again, I can't stand multiplayer games, so I will not go anywhere near it. I hate to say it, but the idea behind Ultima Online was Richard Garriott's final success, and it spawned lots of other multiplayer games that I want nothing to do with.) I haven't even gotten into the cash shop yet. This might well be the deal breaker for me. I will not, under any circumstance, buy in-game currency, and I have never bought a game that had an in-game cash shop at the time that I bought it. Bethesda added the Creation Club to Skyrim and Fallout 4 after I bought them. I have not engaged with it. In those games, it was an afterthought, but it is clearly going to be integrated into the game design going forward. A system like this will compromise the game design, as the company will work diligently to steer players into the cash shop. This unfortunate development might finally land Bethesda on my no-buy list. At this point, I might never buy Starfield, Elder Scrolls VI, or anything else that comes along in the future because I don't want to support a company that uses this unacceptable monetization practice. I don't want my single player games to turn into live services that are loaded with hideous microtransactions. Maybe it is time to move on from Bethesda and look for other things.
Todd is the same age as you. I'm similar in age so have seen the many changes in the gaming industry. I agree with you about Todd. I think it's time for him to move on and let some fresh blood lead Bethesda. After the disasters of Fallout 76 and Starfield, I don't understand why Microsoft hasn't insisted on his replacement. I suggest you don't buy Starfield. I bought it 3 months after release when it had already been patched multiple times but it was still the buggiest game I have ever played. Of the first 5 quests I did, I had to console command myself through 3 of them. I don't use console commands unless I have tried everything else first. So many things messed up including my outpost that I ended up going back to my third save and deleting all other saves and basically starting again. I then avoided doing certain things that were obviously broken. I've been playing the last few days because of the new content after not playing for months but the game keeps on crashing when I fast travel. I have no mods and have made no changes other than a couple of console commands to finish unfinishable quests. I don't really think anyone should avoid any particular game developer, because each game a dev makes varies in bugginess and playability. I look at each game on an individual basis whether I want to play it or not by watching YT videos of the game and seeing what players have to say about it on forums. Then I decide to buy it or not. I'm super picky about what games I buy.
@@nessuno1984 I've seen comments similar to yours about Starfield. It is a good thing that I do not pre-order big games like this or buy them soon after launch. Bethesda games always seem to be in a messy state right at launch. They are better after they have been given a few years to cook. If I ever buy Starfield, it will be in a few years, and at a sale price. If the cash shop doesn't become too intrusive, and if some of the worst problems get fixed and modders fill in some of the dull, empty spaces, then it might eventually be worth it. If not, then I'll ignore it, and that will be a sign that I should ignore all future Bethesda games.
You guys need to stop like geez yeah Starfield and 76 didn't have great launches but they have recovered and recovered well, guys like you are never gunna let this man forget he made those mistakes
@@johnnygolden2914 Bethesda is a big company with a lot of money and supposedly a lot of talent. In what other industry would a product launch as disastrous as Fallout 76 be tolerated by its customers? I've been around long enough to have seen failures and realignments in the automobile industry. Companies that make bad cars get skewered by their customers with no mercy, and car buyers have long memories. To this day, I still default to Japanese brands because American cars were so god-awful back in the 1980s. One of my friends back then had a Plymouth Horizon, which was, and still is, the worst piece of broken-down automotive garbage I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. I remember being surprised every time I saw one running under its own power, which wasn't all that often. Needless to say, I learned to avoid Chrysler products after encountering that piece of crap. If Fallout 76 at launch had been my first Bethesda game, I doubt I would have ever considered buying another one. I get frustrated with gamers for how willing they are to tolerate broken products. From what I hear, Fallout 76 has come back from the dead. I won't play it because I can't stand multiplayer games, but watching it from the outside has been interesting. I'm glad that it has been significantly improved, but it should have been a properly functional and high quality product from the start. A company like Bethesda should have been able to pull off a successful launch. I wouldn't put all of the blame for Fallout 76's initial failure specifically on Todd Howard, but he is a key member of the management team. Whenever there are failures like this, the ultimate responsibility lies with management. United States president Harry S. Truman kept a sign at his desk that read, "The buck stops here." This was his acceptance of ultimate responsibility for everything that went on in the executive branch of the United States government, and he was prepared to take personal responsibility for any failures. (I wish we could get presidents like Truman today.) Management at companies like Bethesda would be well advised to contemplate this statement and make every effort to live up to it. It is important never to let them forget their mistakes; if they step back from their narcissistic delusions and actually listen to criticism, maybe their future performance will improve. If not, then they deserve to go out of business.
Good shit matty. This kind of stuff only benefits everyone. It gives you an amazing opportunity, as well as giving Todd and Bethesda the ability to convey certain things to us. It really goes a LONG way in such a corporatized world

Hey Matt, found your videos recently and just subscribed. For this video, 2 cents are I think the first section of this video would've been a better fit at the end, not the gratefulness that's all cool, but commenting on the realness of interviews etc, so the 7m mark on is what people are probably mostly interested I think. Great interview with Todd, hope to see other interviews in the future.

Hey. I watched the entire interview as it dropped while on my to work. And I have say what a pleasant surprise it was. And myself being very critical about almost everything, I acknowledge that the interview was great! It felt genuine , spontaneous and far away from all the corporate bs. Just some talk between 2 guys passionate about gaming. And that’s really rare to get these days. Also I really appreciate your retro replays segments. Matty, you asked the good questions and that's the biggest thing for me, it wasn't all the questions we've all heard before. Todd took them like a champ too, was an all around great interview
I am still worried that the unannounced Fallout projects will not be a remake though. I’m no optimist, especially not in gaming, so hopefully I’m wrong, but I’m worried it’ll be a mobile game or some other sort of spinoff.
Between Todd saying that he would prefer people play 1/2 as they originally came out and him shooting down ideas for a Morrowind remaster/remake, I just don’t see them remaking Fallout 3 either. Again, I would LOVE to be wrong. I’m just, ugh, my hopes have been crushed too many times in too many ways by too many companies.
On the other hand, the Starfield updates and mods are… well, they’re amazing. It’s not quite where I want it just yet but between the potential and the size limit, I know it will get there soon enough. Honestly there’s enough already for most of the gameplay systems to be tweaked to my liking (biggest one for me is looting NPC inventory), I just want a bit more content.
Also highly disagree with the “small fallout game” idea being bad. I like to think of a world with a myriad of game styles in the Fallout IP. But, oh well, I’ll take what I can get. If anybody actually reads all of my thoughts, I love u.

I hate to say it, but the idea behind Ultima Online was Richard Garriott's final success, and it spawned lots of other multiplayer games that I want nothing to do with.)
I haven't even gotten into the cash shop yet.
Todd has pretty much cemented himself on the George Lucas/Gary Gygax level of the nerd pantheon.
It really goes a LONG way in such a corporatized world
You do such a good job keeping us updated on news in the industry, keep it up!
Matty,
I've been watching your videos for a very long time & catching your E3 clips for a hot minute. Some of my earliest videos of yours that I watched were the Fallout 3 ones. I'm not one to usually comment on TH-cam videos either. I just hit like/subscribe then keep it pushing. But to wake up and see you finally interviewing Todd....You deserve nothing but a big head for this moment & the incredible journey you've been thru to get here! Good job fam :), This is a moment for everyone here to celebrate with you!
Congratulations on getting this far with your TH-cam career, Matty. This moment has been huge to see since being a long time fan! This is only the start, dude!
Your channel and its history is almost exactly what I love about the community surrounding these games. Glad you’re still creating and doing better than ever!

From watching you right at the beginning all the way to today, I truly want to say I am glad to see you haven't changed who you are at your core, your videos have improved but your humor and happiness and the way you've always given info has been there and the interview with Todd was truly a dream for you and your channel and to my point you did an amazing job and better then so many other journalists
Great work dude, I’ve been following you since the pre fallout 4 days(probably since 2013), awesome to see how far you’ve come. Many congratulations

Solid man, keeping yourself level and asking what you think needs to be asked both on a personal and gamer level while also evaluating how well you went about it and examining what exactly those responses mean to you, you’ve definitely taken a big step man keep doin your thing!
Wow congratulations Matty. Been hella awesome to see your growth man. Only been following you for a few years now but your content has always been stellar & always a consistent highlight to my days. Good man matty. Have been watching you for a few years. And when I saw that upload I was like " he did it"! Congratulations man
Hey Matt, found your videos recently and just subscribed.
Love your videos! My first video of yours i watched was the interview you did with the voice actress of Piper from fallout 4. She was my favorite companion in the game and i was amazing to see a whole interview with her voice actress. Been turning in ever since!
Love this all for you Matty!
I’ve been watching since your fallout 3/fallout 4 wishlist videos. You’ve come a long way
Love ya matty, I really liked the interview I can’t believe you interviewed him and asked him all the questions that we’ve been waiting for answers. Since before fallout 4 came out. Man, Thank you for being a TH-camr.
I'm not a massive fan of youtubers but this guy comes across as very grateful for his success and has worked a long time for it. well deserved, he's good at what he does. to get that interview with Todd Howard was big, and he did ask some pressing questions.
Good for you Matty! Good interview! And Todd's a baller for doing an interview on the ground level of his audience.
They’re very unique and that’s how I ended up in your channel. You seem genuine and passionate about your content and that’s what I look for. You have such an energy that is appealing to just watch and listen to you. Also Happy Birthday!
I have been a fan of your content for years now and I'm glad you still keep the same energy as always. I haven't been able to play games much since my daughter was born but I'm hoping to play more again in a few years lol. I will continue to watch your videos and live vicariously off your energy and passion for video games as it's always been my favorite hobby. Keep putting out this great content and I will forever be a fan. Take care of yourself and happy belated birthday Matty 🙂
Great Job Matty! That was my favorite interview with Todd Howard to date. You handled yourself quite well, and brought out a much more cam and candid side of Todd. 😎👍
I remember watching your Fallout 4 content daily after the first trailer dropped. It's good to see you doing well!
Happy late birthday 🥳 love you man keep up the awesome awesome content!!!!
You asked some great questions man, good job
Good for you, Matty! Really really proud for you bro what an interview!
So proud of you, Matty. Started watching you back with Fallout 4, and it’s been a pleasure watching your growth. We’re the same age, so it’s been cool to see how we’ve had similar career arcs. Back then I was just a guy with a manuscript, and now I’m launching my tenth book on my 30th bday next month. I really felt the honesty in your appreciation. Keep doing what you do, brother!
Dude...it was pretty cool to see my boy Matty being referenced in like 5 IGN articles following this interview in my Google News feed. Been watching for years and that interview was awesome to see. Glad you had that opportunity.
nice one matty, great video, your doing great keeping it modest and grounded, so excited for the new games bethesda are working on! look forward to more interviews
Loved the interview, it's refreshing to hear a Dev answer some tough questions instead of staged questions
Was really happy for you! Been watching you since fallout 4 rumour and wish list videos, because of you I picked up Divinity 2 and KOTOR and many more rpgs I probably wouldn’t have tried. So thank you matty!
Man you really hit the interview out of the park thanks for not going easy on him
Been watching you for over ten years man! Here’s to ten more 🎉
Matty thank you for you hard work, your interview with Todd was what we needed.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATTTYYYYY!
Good for you man. I've watched you for news since the Fallout 4 days. It was cool to see you interviewing him lol A little envious. I'm 31 and have no idea what to do with my life lol
❤ love ya Matty and happy dam birthday kid!!
Congratulations on getting that interview with Todd Howard! Along with everything else. That was a great interview. Even though I have been critical of you sometimes I respect how you stay true to yourself!!! Keep up the good work
I'm glad you got the chance to interview Todd. I bet that felt unreal that you got to interview the man that makes some of your favorite games.
Congratulations. I really enjoy your content and you deserve this, Matty. ♥️
Stoked for you!
I’m 39 and I still feel the same as I did when I was 29. Age is just a number. It’s all about your perspective. Now my back on the other hand…. That feels its age.
well deserved. you've been consistent for a long time, and kept things real.
You deserve it bro! So happy for you.
Happy birthday Matty!!! 🥳
Happy birthday, Matty!
Happy birthday Matty
Your 29 and I'm 58! I feel old now lol. When I went to the arcade all they had was Pong.
Congratulations on a great interview with Todd!!! It is great he still gets excited talking about the company's games.
I love all the Bethesda games starting with Elder Scrolls Arena.
Just keep doing what you’ve been doing Matty, you have our support
Happy belated birthday Matty!
Really happy for you Matty
You did great man. Good shit
We love yah Matty, keep doing whatcha do! 💞
Matty, you asked the good questions and that's the biggest thing for me, it wasn't all the questions we've all heard before. Todd took them like a champ too, was an all around great interview
Happy birthday brother! Mine was yesterday also turned 29 lol crazy we are a day apart
Well done Matty, you asked the questions everyone wanted
was a bit of a surprise to see the interview pop up on my feed, but my first thought was "it's about damn time"
Interview was awesome, and so was the get of a guest in Todd. Happy to be here as you continue to grow.
It’s been fun to grow up along side you Matty, even though you have no idea who I am. I am so happy for you for how far you’ve come
Happy Birthday, you rock!!
Love you buddy! Good work!
Great interview!
Good for you Matty ! I'm very happy for you dude.
