Been in fish keeping for 20 years and that blew my mind. We've lost so many fish because of that problem and it turns out a simple procedure can save their life.
Rather than buying fancy goldfish I save the ones meant to be feeder fish. One grew to be about 9" & had the most beautiful split fan tail. It was about 15 yrs old when it passed. It's buried next to another pet. What is used to anesthetize a goldfish? My poor fish is stuck with his tail fin next to his face. It seems like it started off as a buoyancy issue. Then I noticed him on the bottom. I kept thinking it was dead, only to have it move when I tried to remove it from the water. I have it in a net attached to the side of the tank. To keep it safe from the other fish & make sure it gets some food. Will fixing the buoyancy issue allow the fish to straighten back out in most cases? I didn't know there were vets specialized in fish. That so awesome. It makes sense considering how expensive some are. Plus those of us that love their fish like any other pet.
you may be surprised that it's not the expensive fish that I see most commonly. to answer tour questions, fish tend not to straighten out if chronic because of fibrosis and bony growths. There are many anaesthetics available, the ones sold in aquarium stores likely contain 2-phenoxyethanol.
Discovered clove oil works great. a small dose sedates them but if you keep them in there long enough they will pass. they fall asleep as they die so its very humane. you can do a quick google search to see what im talking about :)

@@thefishdoctor8746Dr. thank you do much for your videos. My 7 yr old, beautiful goldfish raised from being bought from a tank of "feeders" is my 1st experience with bloating and although she's been swollen longer than he/she should have for mistaking her as pregnant or with eggs, If I knew what to use to anesthetize with, I'm willing to let off a little air which I believe they desperately need. I regret being unable to afford a vet at the moment but would greatly appreciate any info. I am also treating water with aquarium salt and for bacterial infection. However, without any more immediate relief, I don't think she has much of a chance to make it. Thanks again. 😊
Thank you so much for your advice Doc! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your video on relieving my little fan tail of all that trapped air in her belly! I tried the peas and Epson Salt baths for 2weeks before my wife found you! Goldie and I appreciate you😘

I did this procedure on a beautiful ranchu I got recently. I looked at some ranchu dissections first, and learned they just have one swim bladder which is right dead in the middle! I got clove oil, and started antibiotics a couple days in advance. I'm fairly limited here in Canada, but I got some maracyn and maracyn 2 across the border with EBay miraculously. Anyway, it was my first time and it was very intimidating, but the procedure went perfectly! One poke, didn't need to reposition the needle at all (woohoo!). I couldn't believe my luck. The fish seemed much better buoyancy-wise after. It sank gently, kind of bounced gently as it breathed on the bottom (like really quite neutrally buoyant!). I was so happy! But the very next day it was exactly as incapacitated as before, floating at the top, tail up, head down, like nothing had happened at all. So disappointing! I know they say it can reoccur, but I didn't expect it that quickly! I took out a full cc. I'm not sure if I should reattempt... Such a high, and such a low.
My 4 and a half year old male betta has swim bladder. He wasn't swimming around and could not swim down. I gave him an airstone and then I fasted him for a day and a half. I then fed him a small piece of shelled pea and that has helped. Everyday since Sunday (that's when I started) I feed him a small piece of pea with his pellets. He has gotten a lot better and he has been able to swim down further and further.
Thanks for the great video!!! Question... How would I determine the correct location for the syringe to reach the swim bladder? Also what gauge needle did you use? THANK YOU!!!
In my attempt to save my oranda goldfish I performed the surgery as suggested. Thank you so much for explaining it so well. I wouldn't have even thought of doing that without your shared knowledge. Need your advise what if we remove more air and the fish is not able to swim till the brim to the tank?
I find your videos fascinating. I had no idea you could do surgery on a fish. I was always told that when they start floating you simply had to let them die.
Thank you for this extremely helpful video. I have used the technique on my Siamese Algae eater with a 26 gauge needle under anesthesia. Pretty sure I was in the swim bladder and was able to draw back the plunger without resistance but only minimal improvement in positive buoyancy. Should I try again with a larger-gauge needle? And what is to prevent the problem from recurring?
There aren't any fish vets near me. I really hope this will help my 3 year old goldfish. She lays on the bottom of the tank, her swim bladder causing her to lay on her back. My other one also tends to just stay on the bottom too, but doesn't lay on its back or side. Water parameters are great, they aren't the best swimmers so I wonder if that causes them to rest a lot, similar to a betta. They damaged their fins when caught in various decor when younger and have long fancy tails. Thank you so much for this information.
I had a fish with a stomach issue.. He would always float upside down... But he lived like 10-13 years.. I got my fish for free at a fair when one of the working bumped into me and I was like 7 so i started crying he knocked me down but he came back 10 min later with a fish for me. 💕 i loved my fish I named him orange like the fruit lol i had a goat and i named her brownie i named animals out of foods lol my goat had two babies and one was named brown suger and the other one was named suger. Animals are joyful 💕
Although we know she is not completely out of the woods yet, it appears that our very bloated pond goldfish (whose symptoms included bloated, scales sticking out/ protruding (pine cone effect), bulging eyes, black smudges on her fins and tail, stringy white poop, isolating from other fish) is on her way to a full recovery. We purchased a 10 gallon fish tank, filled it with the pond water, warmed it to 78 degrees, then added 1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt (to decrease bloating)-- everything I read said to only use "epsom" b/c other types of salts could cause her to retain even more fluid, plus 1 teaspoon of melafix (to heal black smudges/areas)........then added a combo of kanaplex and metroplex to the water (to treat either the bacterial infection or parasites that may be causing her illness)...once the water was all ready for her, we transferred her carefully from the pond to the tank. Over the next 7 days, she got better each day. We saw a huge decrease in the bloating by the 2nd day. We didn't feed her for the 1st 2 days to be safe until some of the bloating went away, but then started giving her a few pre-soaked food pellets each day (and a shelled pea here and there). We also checked the water several times a day to be sure it was clean and safe (testing for ammonia, nitrates, ph, etc). After one week, all symptoms are gone! She is back in the pond with her friends looking fantastic! Her scales went down, she is no longer bloated and her poop is back to looking normal. We are hopeful the kidneys repaired themselves and all is well .
I lost one Oranda to this. I had another one displaying similar symptoms. I tried them on peas v.good and also pak Choi and Japanese greens v.cheap which they love, helped a bit. But the best result I had was with Hemp seed including the husk, next day fish was fine, all the fish are looking more healthy and are alert, lively and happy. Well worth a try.
Can this swim bladder issue come back and if so how often? There is a fish tank at my favorite Chinese restaurant & they have big goldfish. Two of them are constantly laying on their sides at the bottom of the tank. Every time I go in I see them laying there which is heartbreaking to me. I truly am worried about them. Is swim bladder painful for the fish? I would imagine it would be horrible for them. The owners of the restaurant said the fish were fine & chose to lay this way because they like it which is absolutely ridiculous. I had NO idea that swim bladder was even a thing as I don't know much about fish. My goal is to find information & help these poor goldfish who appear to be suffering. I am going to let them know that swim bladder is most likely the cause & to get them treated asap. Thanks so much for this video.
I noticed that similar behavior with the goldfish in my pond, they mostly just spend their time eating algae at the bottom or other scraps. My goldfish have been doing just fine for a couple months now, but do you guys recommend any types of food for goldfish? I have been feeding them boiled vegetables, and am culturing Daphnia Magna, I hope to have a population of them grow in the pond. Anything else that I can add to their diet?

Dr., I've just brought in my white cloud minnow from our pond pool in which they summer and breed....they have red gills? Very happy and healthy fish, just red gills? They are in quarantine right now so others tanks not infected. First time with this issue. Greatful for help. Thank you.🇨🇦
Really good information Doc! I recently lost a Fancy Goldfish to swim bladder. Are regular veterinarians trained to do this or do I need to find a vet who specializes in fish? Again, nicely done video, new subscriber here!
your videos are so educational... may i ask.. may i feed my oranda with green peas? do green peas help prevent constipation? im quite new on aquatic pets... more power and God bless doc
Stay Stays yh peas contains high fibre and fibre acts as a laxative which is some thing that flushes out the food and faeces inside the goldfish. You can also use an Epsom salt bath which also acts as a laxative. Hope this helps.
we have 2 small black moore goldfish about 1 1/2-2inch long and both of them are tilted to the right or left about 15degrees all the time. Other than that they are fine. They play chase, root through the gravel, eat just fine. and poop alot. One was born without half it back tail. They where both like that when we got them.
Sir my fish is in trouble! Kindly help.. Its a white red eyed fish, its floating upside down for an hour.. I dont exactly know its specie name but its called a rainbow fish i think.. I have tried taking out air but it still is not ok.. Kindly help!
my goldfish stopped moving completely and I didn't have any equipment so i took out my fish, put my fingers into its mouth and and ripped its mouth and then its body in half. I found its float bladder and replaced it with a normal bladder. While I was there I shoved my fingernails into its gills and ripped them out. I replaced its lungs with human ones. I then took a rusty nail out of my basement and used it to rip off its skin and I replaced it with my hairless dogs skin (so it wouldn't dry out). I asked a electrician to come over and when he did I stabbed a hole into the back of his neck with my metal straw. I tossed him over to my sink as he coughed up his own blood and I poured water into the hole. When he drowned I got the metal straw from earlier and drank the water from his lungs. I did the same thing to get off his scalp as i did with the fish's skin and I bashed the mans skull against the sink until it broke open and I took out his brain. I replaced the fish's brain with the electrician's and now I keep him on my kitchen table to show to my family i keep locked up. Is there a way I can stop him from saying things like "please kill me" and"I have a wife and two kids" ?
What if your fish is sinking rather than floating? I've dosed with metronidazole (in the water as it won't eat). It is an oscar and can swim up from the bottom but it strains to do so and rapidly sinks. This has been ongoing for 3 weeks.
One of my colleagues, Dr Sanders, pioneered surgical attachment of an external buoyancy device for goldfish as a temporary measure, until the fish rights itself. In oscars, the "sinking" may be due to a different reason, and so an aspirate of the swimbladder to see if there's infection may be necessary. mellow yellow good thing to make it stop swimming upsides down is put ur fish in a small container put oxygen inside and cover it with transparent thing
One thing that also cause swim bladder disease is that the fish is ingesting air because of floating pellets. Here is one thing you can do in feeding your fish. animalscene.ph/2018/02/13/convert-your-floating-pellets-into-sinking-pellets-2/
This video isn't supposed to tell you how to treat swim bladder diseas at home. This guy has a medical degree and uses medicine and methods a normal person isn't trained to do/use. It says so in the beginning. And also in the description. It's just meant to be educational.
Is this a permanent fix or will it continue to reoccur?? My silver fancy is suffering with this BADLY. She is floating to the top belly up and my heart is absolutely breaking for her. I didn’t know that this was a problem. At first I thought she was just being silly and then when she started swimming upside down I realized that something was VERY wrong. I tried peas but still need to see results. I’m going to call around to a few vets tomorrow to see if anyone will do this procedure. Thank you so much for the video!
Response in every case is different. Refer your veterinarian to this video for pointers, or they can get in touch with me directly. We also have a group that supports aquatic veterinarian known as the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association (wavma.org).

Hey fish doctor great video... wish I would of had seen thus video sooner... my gold fish has been struggling with that disease... I have tried the peas & medicine but to no success... How long is too long that I should keep trying to save him cuz I don't want to end his suffering? I'll try this method only if not too late... he has redness on side & it's probably been about 5 days maybe thst I've tried helping him... please help

Straight into fresh pond water, but sometimes you may need to flush the gills. For a complete video on anaesthesia, watch th-cam.com/video/_Kz_NnZPXgU/w-d-xo.html
Doc. I can’t tell if my precious fish has this condition or not because she would eat and spit out sand on her side. But then swim normally. This happens quite frequently lately.
Hi Dr. Loh, thanks for you video but how can I prepare the anesthetic solution ? A friend of mine is facing a trouble with floating bloated Goldfish can you share this instruction for me? Help!
Dear Dr Loh, Thank you very much for the reply. Actually, I was thinking about showing the video to my vet. He is an amazing vet. Unfortunately, in the UK, I don't think that vets are trained to work with fish. However, I asked the vet I was seeing previously, not the current one so I will take a chance. Thank you very much.
I did this on my goldfish and I believe I got his intestens, what are his odds of survival. I used a light box to find the spot that let less light through. And when I tried to pull air out the shiringe and when I stopped trying to get air out the shiringe recompresed. Also he is rises very quickly, 3-5x of the fish in the video.
Hi Richmond is there any vet in Sydney who you can recommend who performs this surgery? I took my black moor Nobby to a vet and asked them about this - they came up with a range of diagnostic services but after $356 of diagnosis they said they couldn't perform that surgery. So was an expensive exercise for no improvement. Hope you can refer me? Many thanks for a great video which gives me hope as the peas & salt baths no longer work. Thanks - Stewart
I performed this procedure this week on my red cap oranda. The results were exactly as shown in the video. However after 24hrs I found the fish floating on its side again exactly as it was before the procedure :( any help?

Hello, can you sell me advice to do the procedure on a Scalare pterophyllum fish?
Bro writes a script lol
I lost one Oranda to this.
I had another one displaying similar symptoms.
I tried them on peas v.good and also pak Choi and Japanese greens v.cheap which they love, helped a bit.
But the best result I had was with Hemp seed including the husk, next day fish was fine, all the fish are looking more healthy and are alert, lively and happy.
Well worth a try.
Hi, how did you prepare the hemp seed? Boiled? How much? How many days?
How is this guy not trending
Question, so both my thin foil fish suddenly just started swimming upside down, but the other two fish in the tank were still fine
If I wasn´t what I am I would be a Fish Doctor Hands down!!!
My goldfish are smart I give them pellets that float but they wait until they slowly sink 😆
Hello doctor ..i really need to talk to you regarding my gold fish ..how can i get in touch with you ..i think shge has swim.bladder and her tail is curved like snake towards 1 side ..i have fed her peas ..epsom salt can u perform this operation ...how can i help her ..please help me and advise me ...!!! Truly appreciate ...
TinRelic1. They deserve a treat
Pellets are air filled so better crush them before feeding to avoid air bloating inside fish
Bullets Forteeth FULL AUTO Same! My comet + oranda always dig around the bottom, and quite often mistake some of their "fish waste" for food. They do spit it out though!
At what depth under scales did you go. My favorite fish is doing this right now.
If only I knew this way back in the day when my goldfish that I had for many year had this happen to her 😥. Great to know just in case I get another one some day
Dr., I've just brought in my white cloud minnow from our pond pool in which they summer and breed....they have red gills? Very happy and healthy fish, just red gills? They are in quarantine right now so others tanks not infected. First time with this issue. Greatful for help. Thank you.🇨🇦
Really good information Doc! I recently lost a Fancy Goldfish to swim bladder. Are regular veterinarians trained to do this or do I need to find a vet who specializes in fish? Again, nicely done video, new subscriber here!
Can someone provide a link to the anesthetic and antibiotic used for this scenario? I would greatly appreciate the help.
In case it helps someone else, clove oil worked as an anesthetic in small doses.
Thank you so much you helped me save my fish
Omg my fish has this, my fish started it just yesterday I was worried omg
Spill the tea sis
*Mine too. I just got it yesterday and it died today. It was so big, like 5 inches.*
@@lolamoon7296 I'm really sorry about that
Did it get better?
your videos are so educational... may i ask.. may i feed my oranda with green peas? do green peas help prevent constipation? im quite new on aquatic pets... more power and God bless doc
Stay Stays yh peas contains high fibre and fibre acts as a laxative which is some thing that flushes out the food and faeces inside the goldfish. You can also use an Epsom salt bath which also acts as a laxative. Hope this helps.
Fascinating video! What do you think of successive salt treatments for less severe swim bladder problems?
Allyson Chains salt is a good stress reliever. Watch our video on salt - th-cam.com/video/4SBLP1gDcyA/w-d-xo.html
The Fish Doctor Thank you Dr. Loh. Found and watched your video on salt right after I left this comment. So very helpful. Thanks again!
we have 2 small black moore goldfish about 1 1/2-2inch long and both of them are tilted to the right or left about 15degrees all the time. Other than that they are fine. They play chase, root through the gravel, eat just fine. and poop alot. One was born without half it back tail. They where both like that when we got them.
I hope you can still read this in flowerhorn same spot to poke?
Awesome video mate!
Is there a way I can stop him from saying things like "please kill me" and"I have a wife and two kids" ?
my answers may never be solved
My fish does this ever now and then and it seems to fix itself with in a day or two I just wish I could help her get better quicker
Eating too much, too fast or eating at the surface which causes them to ingest air, can all be issues
Really happy for the fish.
So what causes this?? Any home remedies or preventative measures we could take at home?
What medicine do you put in the water?
What if your fish is sinking rather than floating? I've dosed with metronidazole (in the water as it won't eat). It is an oscar and can swim up from the bottom but it strains to do so and rapidly sinks. This has been ongoing for 3 weeks.
One of my colleagues, Dr Sanders, pioneered surgical attachment of an external buoyancy device for goldfish as a temporary measure, until the fish rights itself. In oscars, the "sinking" may be due to a different reason, and so an aspirate of the swimbladder to see if there's infection may be necessary. if only this video was shorter and to the point because i am trying to save my fish, am 7 minutes in and still don't know what to do
My fish started swimming upside down today, and is barely breathing. But I have no vets near me that can preform a surgery to the swim bladder.
mellow yellow good thing to make it stop swimming upsides down is put ur fish in a small container put oxygen inside and cover it with transparent thing
One thing that also cause swim bladder disease is that the fish is ingesting air because of floating pellets. Here is one thing you can do in feeding your fish.
animalscene.ph/2018/02/13/convert-your-floating-pellets-into-sinking-pellets-2/
Saving a life involves years of training and doing it without the proper education will be disastrous.
This video isn't supposed to tell you how to treat swim bladder diseas at home. This guy has a medical degree and uses medicine and methods a normal person isn't trained to do/use. It says so in the beginning. And also in the description.
It's just meant to be educational.
What is the average cost of a procedure like this? Asking for a fish I know.
Caitlin Jordan it almost costs 1200 dollars
MC KSHITIZ I doubt
It costs roughly the same as a small animal like a rabbit.
MC KSHITIZ this is not true. Stop. My dogs ear surgery cost that much....
@@RB123_ lmao no
Omg can I do this myself ?
*How did i get to this video...*
Can you post a video with the same process on an Oranda
Is this something I should try myself or find an expert.
My 15 year old Goldfish is miserable.
And I don’t know how long I have before he dies.
How long does this last?
Awesome video!!
My guppy, Eliza has swim bladder disorder so I made her a sling. She has to have her own private tank because the other fish poke at her sling but she's pretty good
Hey fish doctor great video... wish I would of had seen thus video sooner... my gold fish has been struggling with that disease... I have tried the peas & medicine but to no success... How long is too long that I should keep trying to save him cuz I don't want to end his suffering? I'll try this method only if not too late... he has redness on side & it's probably been about 5 days maybe thst I've tried helping him... please help
I have a fantail that is floating upside down , have fed peas for couple weeks , water change , epsom salts bath , nothing worked so far , I want to try this procedure , is clove oil good for sedation ? Closest fish doctor is 3 hours away , has anyone done this is please a few tips on finding the swim bladder in a large fantail , thanks , great video , gives me hope for my little finned friend.
I'm unable to comment without having examined your fish clinically.
im in your same boat. and i feel horrible
My fish is swiming fine on top but cant swim down. Where are you located?
Fantastic videos!
Dr. , My betta is doing the opposite. He is on the bottom and has a difficult time reaching up. Thanks.
Great information. Thanks
Dr Loh what if its not air but here is an infection of the bladder? the symptoms are very similar right? what is the treatment then?
You'll need to drain it, and get culture and sensitivity done to guide the antibiotics choice.
@@thefishdoctor8746 thank you very much
As soon as the fins on both sides of my followroun fish are damaged, what is the treatment for them?
My srd flowerhorn have the same problem, can I use this technique to remove the gas from the bladder ?
Please reply...
I have a black moore that's swimming on its side .one side looks swollen than the other. Would this method work
Nice man!!!
I have a question
i have the same problem with discus. can i proceed in the same way? once the air is removed will this disease be over or will the fish be upside down again after a few weeks?
For revival is there anything special you do or do you just put him in fresh water and wait?
Straight into fresh pond water, but sometimes you may need to flush the gills. For a complete video on anaesthesia, watch th-cam.com/video/_Kz_NnZPXgU/w-d-xo.html
Great doctor thanks a lot! I have saved my fish with this video... Thanks a lot
Doc. I can’t tell if my precious fish has this condition or not because she would eat and spit out sand on her side. But then swim normally. This happens quite frequently lately.
How much time does it took for the fish to swim again properly after the surgery
Hi Dr. Loh, thanks for you video but how can I prepare the anesthetic solution ? A friend of mine is facing a trouble with floating bloated Goldfish can you share this instruction for me? Help!
I wish you were here, Doctor. There are no fish vets here and my fish is in distress with a swim bladder disorder. What can I do? :(
Lydie Griffiths show this video to your veterinarian.
MY FISH HAS THIS!!! i just got a new fish and this is what my fish was doing
Hi Dr Loh..my newly added goldfish have red veins on her tail. I chaned 50% of the water today. What should i do to better her condition? Thanks.
I have a goldfish that sinks and another that is laying on the side. What can I do? Surgery?
Hi Would you be able to describe how to perform this on a discus and have you tried it?
I have a koi fish it has a bladder problem swims sideways and upside down Lay's on the bottom of the tank?
I’m here because I believe my goldfish king has this and I’m really sad that he/she might die after going through so much before I got him/her. I think I might cry If king dies. But I’m gonna hope the best
How is your fish? I’m going through the same thing right now, I don’t think the peas are helping and I don’t know what else to do
What time of aesthetic solutions did u use? How many ml if 1 gal? Thanks.
How did you anesthetize your fish???.plz help

What are those plastic boxes with the blue lids you are using to put the fish in? Where can I buy those?
Pet stores, called kritter keepers or such
